At long last a beautifully restored and mastered selection of a number of cartoon king Tex Avery’s brilliant, innovative and (most of all) hilarious MGM shorts comes to Blu-ray via the Warner Archive, with the implied promise of more volumes to come. Some of his greatest cartoons are included, and many of these shorts have likely not looked and sounded so good since their original theatrical release. This is a virtual godsend for the director’s legion of fans, and a worthwhile introduction for those yet unfamiliar with Avery’s uniquely zany oeuvre.

Way back in July of last year, Disney announced that it is bringing the 1941 classic animated adventure Dumbo back to theaters with a new live-action take on the story. Today it was announced that Tim Burton will direct that movie. This is the second time Tim Burton has taken one of Disney's animated classics and given it a human-spin, following the box office success of 2010's Alice in Wonderland.
Walt Disney Pictures president of production Sean Bailey announced the director earlier this morning. Dumbo is still in development and does not yet have a release date. It is just one of a number of animated movies-turned-live action for the studio, with Cinderella in theaters this week. Disney is also currently in production on a live-action/CGI take on The Jungle Book directed by Jon Favreau, which will be in theaters April of next year. This will be followed by Alice...

To promote the upcoming November 27th release of the Disney animated feature Frozen, the studio invited members of the press out to see about 30 minutes of the film, along with the short, Get A Horse!, that will be paired with it in theaters. Featuring Walt Disney himself as the voice of Mickey Mouse, the charming and totally cool new 3D short that seamlessly blends 2D black and white animation with color CG follows Mickey, his favorite gal pal Minnie Mouse (voiced by Marcellite Garner), and their friends Horace Horsecollar and Clarabell Cow, as they enjoy a musical haywagon ride. When Peg-Leg Peter (voiced by Billy Bletcher) shows up and tries to run them off the road, classic meets modern, often stunningly in the same frame. Get A Horse! is so fun that not only did it leave me wanting to see it again, but it made me excited to see...

On Tuesday morning, Wamg was invited to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ special press preview of John Ford’s Upstream (1927), one of 75 films recently found in the New Zealand Film Archive and repatriated to the U.S. with the cooperation of the National Film Preservation Foundation.
The 1927 silent film, that was thought lost for decades, had it’s re-premiere Wednesday night, September 1, at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. Many of the VIP’s on hand included Silent Film Historians and those involved with the restoration, as well as the general public.
Having seen the film on Tuesday, I must say the transfer is absolutely beautiful. I was so impressed by the special care taken with the film’s clarity and how vibrant the tinting is on the multiple color frames throughout. The smoky special effects combined with the subtle transitions made me forget I was...
