Pedro Almodóvar can now count Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore among his new cinematic muses.

The Oscar-winning Spanish director’s first English-language feature, “The Room Next Door,” was confirmed Tuesday morning as expected to premiere at the 2024 Venice Film Festival in competition. Timed to artistic director Alberto Barbera’s lineup announcement, the festival has also released a first-look image of the film, which you can see above.

Almodóvar has made two short films in English: the Jean Cocteau-inspired breakup tone poem “The Human Voice,” which premiered at Venice in 2020, and gay Western “Strange Way of Life,” starring Ethan Hawke and Pedro Pascal, which played Cannes 2023. Sony Pictures Classics announced on Wednesday that it will release Nathan Silver’s acclaimed comedy Between the Temples, starring Jason Schwartzman (Asteroid City) and Carol Kane (The Dead Don’t Die), in theaters nationwide on August 23.

The film will open against Zoë Kravitz’s debut feature Blink Twice (Amazon MGM Studios), the animated pic 200% Wolf (Viva Pictures), the remake of The Crow starring Bill Skarsgärd (Lionsgate), and the drama The Forge from Affirm Films.

Slated to make its New York debut at Tribeca in June, after playing both Sundance and Berlin to great reviews, Between the Temples follows Ben (Schwartzman), a forty-something cantor losing his voice and possibly his faith. Struggling to meet the expectations of his rabbi, congregation, and not one but two Jewish mothers (Caroline Aaron and Dolly de Leon), Ben finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all rights worldwide to Nathan Silver’s Between The Temples starring Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane, following its buzzy world premiere at Sundance and ahead of its upcoming international debut at the Berlinale.

Billed by SPC as a comedy “exploring the complexities of belief, connection, and what it means to be a real mensch”, Between The Temples co-stars Schwartzman as is a forty-something cantor who is losing his voice and possibly his faith following the death of his wife.

As he struggles to meet the expectations of his rabbi, congregation, and not one but two Jewish mothers – played by Dolly de Leon (Triangle Of Sadness) and Caroline Aaron (The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel) – his life is turned upside down when his grade school music teacher (Kane) re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student.

Robert Smigel (Leo), Madeline Weinstein (Beach Rats) and Matthew Shear (Mistress America) round out the cast.

Sony Pictures Classics has picked up the world distribution rights to Nathan Silver’s offbeat Jewish comedy Between the Temples, which bowed at Sundance.

The film sees Jason Schwartzman play Ben Gottlieb, a cantor in crisis after losing his voice and who falls for Carla Kessler, an adult bat mitzvah student (Carol Kane). However the student just happens to be his former grade school music teacher.

Ben and Carla become an odd couple in a comedy that explores the complexities of belief, connection, and what it means to be a real mensch, according to the film’s synopsis. Between the Temples is directed by Silver, who co-wrote the script with C. Mason Wells.

Not much is known on Fleeing – a project which Steven Soderbergh just revealed that he was a producer on. Rachael Holder‘s previous stints has been working in television, and we imagine this feature debut moved into production this past summer – which means chances are next to slim but not impossible. Based on a screenplay by Paul Zimmerman, this was shot in New York City and we’re high on the project because it features André Holland and Danielle Brooks.

The 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards were handed out Saturday in recognition of the best in indie films from 2019.

Willem Dafoe won the first award, Best Supporting Male, for his role in “The Lighthouse.” “Uncut Gems” won Best Editing, while the Best Documentary award went to “American Factory.” Best Cinematography went to Jarin Blaschke for “The Lighthouse.”

Kelly Reichardt was awarded The Bonnie Award, which recognizes a mid-career female director with a $50,000 unrestricted grant. The John Cassavetes Award, given to the best feature made for under $500,000, was given to “Give Me Liberty.”

Two dark and unruly films released by A24, Robert Eggers’ “The Lighthouse” and the Safdie brothers’ “Uncut Gems,” led all films in nominations for the 2020 Film Independent Spirit Awards, Film Independent announced on Thursday.

In the Best Feature category, “Uncut Gems” was joined by Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Terrence Malick’s “A Hidden Life,” Chinonye Chukwu’s “Clemency” and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story.”

“Uncut Gems” was the only film nominated in both the Best Feature and Best Director categories, though “Marriage Story” was nominated in the former category and was also voted the special John Cassavetes Award, which goes to a film’s director, cast and casting director.

Magnolia Pictures has released the first trailer and poster for Permanent. This indie comedy is set in the early 80's in small town Virginia and "Perms" are all the rage. 13-year Aurelie dreams about getting one to finally fit in at her new school but when her clueless parents bring her to a hairdressing academy to save a few bucks, things go incredibly wrong. This is the story about adolescence, socially awkward family members and bad hair.

Bad hair day? Nope! More like a bad hair life. Set in 1982 in small town Virginia, Permanent centers around 13-year-old Aurelie Dickson (Kira McLean) and her parents, Jeanne and Jim (Patricia Arquette and Rainn Wilson). In this hilariously awkward and unique telling full of wit and wisdom of a hairstyle gone wrong, the Dicksons are struggling through major life changes together all the while trying desperately to emerge intact on the other side.

A24, in association with Participant Media and Image Nation, has announced a December 31 New York and Los Angeles release for the film that also stars Albert Brooks and David Oyelowo.

A Most Violent Year will expand nationwide throughout January 2015. It is understood the film will compete in all categories including Chastain in lead categories.

Chandor directed from his screenplay about the travails of an immigrant family in New York during winter 1981, statistically one of the most violent years in the city’s history.

Producers are Neal Dodson and Anna Gerb, while Glen Basner, Joshua Blum and Participant Media’s Jeff Skoll and Jonathan King serve as executive producers.

Chandor’s All Is Lost opened in 2013 and earned a number of awards.

Coming off the back of his acclaimed sophomore feature, All Is Lost, J.C. Chandor is about to go back behind the camera for his anticipated third film, A Most Violent Year.

Out in Park City, the film market has been heating up in recent days, and one of the biggest companies to make their mark so far has been A24.

The distribution/production company has been very much on the rise since their debut last year with Roman Coppola’s A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III, with releases including Ginger & Rosa, Spring Breakers, and most recently The Spectacular Now.

So it should come as no surprise then that they are keen to cement their status, announcing that they have acquired U.S. rights to Chandor’s A Most Violent Year, led by Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain.

The busy distributor announced from Park City it has picked up Us rights to Participant Media’s thriller A Most Violent Year, Jc Chandor’s follow-up to All Is Lost.

FilmNation represents international rights and will be touting the project at the Efm next month.

Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain will star in the 1980s period story about an immigrant and his family trying to expand their business during a statistically violent time in New York. Shooting is set to commence shortly in New York.

A24 plans a fourth quarter wide release. Participant Media and Image Nation Abu Dhabi are co-financing, while Before The Doors’ Neal Dodson and Washington Square Films’ Anna Gerb produce with Chandor.

Factory 25 has acquired North American rights to the Melissa Leo drama “Francine” and will co-release the film on VOD November 1. The Film Sales Company first opens the film theatrically at MoMa September 12, followed by other theatrical showings in the fall and a DVD release in the spring. “Francine” stars Oscar winner Leo (“The Fighter”) as a lonely woman who has difficulty adjusting to life in a small town once she’s released from prison after many years. Here’s a first look at All Is Lost. Lionsgate, Roadside Attractions, Academy Award-winner Robert Redford, and Academy Award-nominated writer/director J.C. Chandor (Best Writing, Original Screenplay for Margin Call) jointly announced that principal photography has wrapped on the open water thriller All Is Lost at Baja Studios in Rosarito, Mexico. Chandor wrote and directed the film, and Redford stars in a solo performance of one man lost at sea and his battle against the elements to stay alive. Before The Door Pictures. It’s hard to believe that Iffr is already coming to an end. Having now been here for a full and very active week filled with films, parties, new acquaintances…we feel simultaneously exhausted and rejuvenated. It is an honor to bring a film to Rotterdam.

The Patron Saints screened three times at three different venues. At the start of our first screening, there was a technical issue that threw us into a bit of a panic. It was really our fault for not showing up a few minutes early to do a tech check, but… live and learn. To our great relief the issue was only temporary and from that point on everything looked and sounded excellent. We felt very fortunate to have such engaged audiences and got the feeling they made a real commitment towards seeing the film, which is a stark and somewhat confrontational portrait of life in a nursing home.

Today it was announced by Steve Beeks of Lionsgate and Howard Cohen of Roadside Attractions that they have teamed to acquire and release J.C. Chandor's thriller, Margin Call for a 2011 release.

The deal came together after an all night negotiation between Cassian Elwes and Rena Ronson of UTA on behalf of Margin Call producers. The film will have it's world premiere on Tuesday night at the Eccles Theater, and a 2011 theatrical release is planned.

The film boasts an amazing cast that includes Kevin Spacey, Paul Bettany, Jeremy Irons, Zachary Quinto, Penn Badgley, Simon Baker, Mary McDonnell, Demi Moore, and Stanley Tucci. Chandor wrote and directed the film which was produced by Michael Benaroya and Barnum of Benaroya Pictures. Quinto, Dodson, and Corey Moosa of Before the Door Pictures and Joe Jenckes. Stanley Tucci and Carla Gugino have signed on to "Margin Call" from writer and director J.C. Chandor. They join stars Kevin Spacey and Zachary Quinto. The film is set in an investment bank in a 24 hour period during the financial collapse of 2008. Quinto produces alongside Neal Dodson and Corey Moosa via their Before the Doors Pictures. Also producing are Joe Jenckes and Benaroya Pictures' Michael Benaroya and Robert Ogden Barnum. Myriad CEO Kirk D'Amico serves as an executive producer with Laura Rister, Randy Manis and Joshua Blum of Washington Square Films.

Producer Jack Lechner has signed a first-look deal with Joshua Blum's production and talent management company Washington Square Arts & Films. Lechner, who will be based at Wsf's Manhattan office, will be charged with bringing in new projects as well as shepherding select projects already on Wsf's roster as Wsf expands to produce four to six projects annually.

Both Lechner and Wsf also will continue to pursue projects independently.

Wsf's projects include the Emmy-winning documentary "Billy Strayhorn: Lush Life" and the feature "Old Joy," directed by Kelly Reichert. The company is currently developing a documentary about Spalding Gray with Steven Soderbergh.
