  • Began acting in films for Thanhauser in 1910.
  • Left acting for a decade to prospect for gold in Alaska in the 1900s.
  • He was first inspired to be an actor when, at age 16, he saw Edwin Booth play Brutus in a production of William Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar. He later appeared with Booth in several Shakespeare plays, including Julius Caesar -- the last run of shows in which Booth performed before retiring.
