Alex Grech debuts alongside Rebel Wilson and Jason Isaacs in the bold musical ‘Juliet & Romeo’
Image
Australian newcomer Alex Grech shines in ‘Juliet & Romeo’, a vibrant musical retelling where he not only acts but helps redefine a legendary story.

Before stepping onto a film set, Alex Grech had already travelled the world as a backpacker, worked as a paralegal and bartender, and performed in high school productions of ‘The Lion King’ and ‘Legally Blonde’. But nothing truly prepared him for what it would mean to bring Tomasso to life in ‘Juliet & Romeo’—a role written specifically for this bold new retelling of Shakespeare’s tragedy.

“I’m honoured to have shared the space with such a powerful cast,” Grech shares. “Having the chance to work with fellow Australians Rebel Wilson and Jamie Ward, who play Lady Capulet and Romeo respectively, was an added pleasure. I had a great time working very closely with Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter & The White Lotus), our Lord Montague, and Derek Jacobi,...

Juliet & Romeo review – Rebel Wilson and Jason Isaacs cameo in syrupy Shakespeare musical
JULIET & ROMEO, The Franchise Begins
With bare-faced cheek, this bardless take replaces all the original language with olden-days-effect prose – adding singing, dancing and a pointlessly starry cast

Director and former stage actor Timothy Scott Bogart is best known for having made Spinning Gold, a biopic of his father Neil Bogart, the New York music producer and founder of the 70s disco-era label Casablanca Records. Now he has confected a syrupy new musical take on Romeo and Juliet, with music by his brother Evan Kidd Bogart (who won a Grammy for his work on Beyoncé’s single Halo).

Bogart retells the basic story but with Shakespeare’s language all removed and replaced with olden-days-effect prose: a kind of bardless Baz Luhrmann. Ultimately – with what I do have to admit is some amiable cheek – Bogart contrives to do for this play what Nahum Tate did for King Lear. It’s really pretty bland, and with each turn...

Juliet & Romeo - Jennie Kermode - 19752
JULIET & ROMEO, The Franchise Begins
One might well be wary of any version of Shakespeare’s famous work naively billed as ‘the world’s greatest love story.’ Wary, too, of one that opens with grieving, reunited families standing around their entwined bodies, the boy’s head resting upon the breast of the girl – a position which, if you’re familiar with the ending, raises questions on multiple levels. This isn’t quite what it seems, however, as Timothy Scott Bogart’s musical is based not on the play but on the traditional stories that preceded it. It weaves lines from Shakespeare's play into its script but is never dominated by them. His full suite of characters is present, but some liberties have been...

Marvel’s ‘Thunderbolts’ tops box office with $33 million as ‘A Minecraft Movie’ surpasses $900 million globally
Image
Update May 11, 2025: Thunderbolts, aka New Avengers, dominated the box office during the May 9-11 weekend, earning $33.1 million in its second outing. Ticket sales for Disney's Marvel movie dropped just 55 percent from its $74 million opening, buoyed by its A-minus CinemaScore and glowing reviews. This is a better hold than several previous Marvel films, including Captain America: Brave New World (down 68 percent), 2023's Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (down 70 percent), The Marvels (down 78 percent), and 2022's Thor: Love and Thunder (down 67 percent), signaling a positive shift for the franchise.

In second place, Sinners held strong with $21.1 million, with the Warner Bros. vampire flick's domestic tally soaring past $200 million and nearing $300 million worldwide. A Minecraft Movie followed in third with $8 million in its sixth weekend; the video game-based movie, also from Warner Bros., has now grossed $409 million in North America as it inches closer to $1 billion globally. Ben Affleck's thriller, The Accountant 2,...

Juliet & Romeo Review: When Swordplay and Song Collide
JULIET & ROMEO, The Franchise Begins
Juliet & Romeo repositions Verona’s ancient feud within a neon‑tinged musical tapestry. Director Timothy Scott Bogart and composer Evan Kidd Bogart stitch Shakespeare’s narrative to a modern pop sensibility (think synth‑laced power ballads that nod to Swiftian craftsmanship). Clara Rugaard’s Juliet and Jamie Ward’s Romeo carry the film’s emotional core, though their duet numbers rarely outshine the production’s more exuberant ensemble set pieces.

Dante Ferretti’s sumptuous costumes—electric crimsons for Capulets, midnight blues for Montagues—pair with Byron Werner’s lensing to conjure an almost hallucinatory version of 14th‑century Italy. Sword fights erupt into choreographed dance‑offs, each cut suggesting a “sword ballet” that reframes violence as stylized pageantry. Filming in real Italian piazzas lends tangible gravity, even when lyrics soar into playful banter.

That pivot from tragedy to hopeful extravaganza, capped by a “Book Two” tease, invites reflection on why...

Jamie Ward is Romeo, of the house of Montague, and Juliet (Clara Rugaard) is of the house of Capulet. Those two families clash in fair Verona for territory and are bitter rivals. But the two hot teens don’t care as they meet and fall in love, would a rose by any other name smell as sweet? While the conflict escalates between the two houses, The Apothecary (Dan Fogler) has developed a sleep potion that mimics death, and the Friar (Derek Jacobi) has a plan for the lovers to use it. Wherefore art thou, indeed.

‘Juliet & Romeo’ Review: Tryhard Attempt to Make Shakespeare ‘Cool’ Achieves the Opposite
Image
Let’s get something straight: Making William Shakespeare’s plays “cool” is kind of the opposite of cool. The only thing older than trying to make Shakespeare’s plays “hip” is Shakespeare’s actual plays, which were plenty hip to begin with. Hollywood has been trying to hip up those bad boys for a hundred years. You’ll find John Gilbert and Norma Shearer making fun of studio execs trying to fix The Bard way back in “The Hollywood Revue of 1929,” as they squawked wacky lines like “Julie baby, I’m ga-ga about you” and “You’re just about the cookies for me, boyfriend.”

Generally speaking it’s the updated versions of “Romeo & Juliet” that age badly, but these versions can still have value. “West Side Story” remains the best side story. Baz Luhrmann’s “Romeo + Juliet” is the ninetiesest nineties movie that ever tied nines in...

Juliet & Romeo Review — Pop Ballads Fall Short of Reinventing the Shakespearean Classic
Image
The push to find new angles on established stories has led audiences to some strange places. For the Disney live-action films, it’s ended in disaster, while the new approaches to Little Women, The Tragedy of Macbeth, and The Invisible Man led to critical success. Juliet & Romeo hopes to accomplish the same reinvention, providing its loaded ensemble with a pop ballad musical from the iconic music producer E. Kidd Bogart. Even though the music doesn’t always resonate, the visuals and choreography are remarkable in their own right.

Based on the classic story from Shakespeare, director Timothy Scott Bogart takes the tale back to its roots. Shooting in Italy and featuring a massive ensemble, we live out the events of the play in the 1300s. The Capulets and Montagues are fighting in Verona, and through a pop-ballad musical, the characters deliver their innermost thoughts.

Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet is one of the most popular and adapted stories of all time. However, Juliet & Romeo from director Timothy Scott Bogart finds a new avenue to tell the story. Not only does it keep a lot of the original Shakespearian language, but it also approaches this version of the story with original pop music ballads to help the characters express their emotions. Bogart spoke with FandomWire about his experience working with his brother to perfect the songs, shooting Juliet & Romeo on location in Italy, and getting legendary British thespians to rap.

Pitch Perfect fans might still hold onto the hope that a fourth film gets made, but in the absence of updates, Rebel Wilson's next comedy might help to fill the void. Naomi Ackie in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
Spinning Gold Review: Neil Bogart Biopic is a Family-Made Epic Compressed into a Brief Greatest Hits Album
Naomi Ackie in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody (2022)
Suffering from many of the same issues as Kasi Lemmons’ Witney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Spinning Gold contains too rich of a life for its 137-minute runtime. The brilliance of both Orson Welles’ Citizen Kane and Todd Haynes’ fictional glam rock epic Velvet Goldmine is that they understood there’s only so much you can bite off, starting with the official record and working with those in closest proximity to their subject.

Directed by Timothy Scott Bogart––son of its subject, Neil Bogart––and told from the first-person perspective of the record executive (played by Jeremy Jordan), Spinning Gold takes the colorful story of an entrepreneur who died at age 39 and races through several highlights. These include discovering and packaging Kiss, figuring out that Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby” needed to be 17 minutes long so people can make love to it, and working with the Isley Brothers,...

Audio Film Review: ’Spinning Gold’ Loves to Love You Baby
Image
Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com audio film review for the newly released “Spinning Gold,” the outrageous 1970s tale of the founding of Casablanca Records by Neil Bogart. Currently in theaters, since March 31st.

Rating: 3.5/5.0

The mover and shaker of Casablanca Records was Neil Bogart (Jeremy Jordan), ardently characterized as a mid 20th Century con man, in a sense. After having a minor pop music hit in the 1960s, he joined the record industry later in the decade as a “throw it against the wall and see what sticks” kind of a music maven. When he splits off his own label … Casablanca Records … in the early 1970s, he starts in massive debt but digs it out with a new artist, Donna Summer. (Taya Parx), and a new sound … disco. But he also scored in other music, as Bogart introduced rockers Kiss, soul singers Bill Withers (Pink Sweat$) and Gladys Knight...

‘Spinning Gold’ Filmmaker on the 24-Year Journey to Tell the Story of Neil Bogart and Casablanca Records
Image
It may have taken Spinning Gold filmmaker Timothy Scott Bogart 24 years to tell the story of his father, Neil Bogart, and his record company, Casablanca Records, but such perseverance runs in the family and in the film.

As years and years of development came and went, so did names like Justin Timberlake and Spike Lee, but Bogart and his collaborators eventually realized that only he could tell the story of how Brooklyn’s Neil Bogatz became Neil Bogart, the record executive who elevated the careers of Kiss, Donna Summer and The Isley Brothers, to name a few. Ultimately, Bogart took the plunge as director even though he was keenly aware of how critical audiences can be of family-controlled biopics.

“I did go through a number of different directors because I never intended to be the director of the film at the start. I was looking at it, going, ‘God, I’m writing,...

‘Spinning Gold’ Review: Neil Bogart, the Upstart Mogul of Casablanca Records, Gets a Sketchbook Biopic That Coasts Along on ’70s Nostalgia
Image
In “Spinning Gold,” a sketchy but adoring if not outright devotional biopic about Neil Bogart, the upstart ’70s music-industry mogul who founded Casablanca Records, there’s a pivotal moment that spins around the story of how Bogart, at a party he was throwing, played the 3-minute-and-20-second single version of Donna Summer’s “Love to Love You Baby.” He played it over and over again because his guests kept asking for it. That’s when the lightbulb went on. Bogart realized that the song needed to be longer, much longer — long enough to have sex to. (It ended up being 16 minutes and 50 seconds.) This is a rather famous anecdote. So we assume that we’re going to see Bogart meet with Giorgio Moroder, the song’s composer and producer, and change music history.

It happens that way…sort of. Bogart tells Moroder that he wants a longer version of the song.

Spinning Gold Review: Overly Long But Worthy Story On The Rise of Disco
Image
In the early 1970s, Casablanca Records took the industry by storm as it rose to one of the most successful independent American labels of its time. With talents like Donna Summer, Kiss, and Cher, it’s unsurprising the world, during that time, had a disco craze. What’s lesser known is the genius behind the label who made it all happen. His name was Neil Bogart. With all his faults, addictions, and habits, there was something special about Bogart. He believed in his artists, not because he had to but because he truly believed in their talents. To bring Neil’s story to life in Spinning Gold, who better to tell it than his son, film and TV producer Timothy Scott Bogart?

Bogart directs and pens the script for his biographical drama to celebrate the rise of disco and the man who made it all happen. In his feature debut,...

‘Spinning Gold’: Timothy Scott Bogart on Neil Bogart’s Musical Legacy
Image
Few music executives can claim to have the influence Neil Bogart had in the 1970s. Besides being the founder of Casablanca Records, the most successful independent record label of all time, Neil Bogart helped discover game-changing artists such as Kiss, Donna Summer, and Village People. Neil has also helped musicians such as Gladys Knight and Bill Withers to launch some of the most famous singles. However, as an executive, Bogart’s unbelievable story was doomed to oblivion. At least until his son, Timothy Scott Bogart decided to write, direct, and produce Spinning Gold, a musical biopic about his late father’s journey and the meteoric rise of Casablanca Records.

Box office preview: ‘Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves’ might have a tough time besting ‘John Wick: Chapter 4’
Image
This March has been one of the best months for releases outside of summer, with three highly successful sequels setting new records for their respective franchises. “Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” now kicks off its own franchise by adapting the popular role-playing video game. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Paramount is probably hoping that younger moviegoers won’t be aware of the 2000 “Dungeon & Dragons” movie that bombed very badly, but “Dungeon & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” has a much stronger cast that includes Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page from “Bridgerton,” Hugh Grant, Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Dominion”) and Sophie Lillis (“It”).

SEEBox office: ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ passes ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ to become 7th highest-grossing movie domestically

While Rodriguez continues to appear in the popular “Fast & Furious” movies, it’s been some time since Pine has starred in a major theatrical release, going back...

Spinning Gold Sees Record Execs Fight Over Johnny Carson & Donna Summer
Image
Screen Rant is thrilled to present a new clip from the upcoming film Spinning Gold, which is slated to release at the end of March. The biopic is centered around the life of the music executive Neil Bogart, who founded Casablanca Records. Spinning Gold stars Tony-nominee Jeremy Jordan as Bogart alongside cast members like Mission: Impossible's Michelle Monaghan, SNL's Jay Pharoah, and Harry Potter's Jason Issacs.

Spinning Gold has long been a passion project for Timothy Scott Bogart, Neil's son, who first started on the film over a decade ago. When the project first began, it was rumored Spike Lee may direct Spinning Gold, which at the time was set to star Justin Timberlake. However, as time went on the project evolved, with Bogart assuming the directorial role and Jordan replacing Timberlake. The movie will follow Neil Bogart's journey to making Casablanca the most successful independent record company of all time,...

Spinning Gold Puts the Magic of the Infamous 1970s Casablanca Records and its Visionary Founder Neil Bogart on the Big Screen
Image
The greatest Artists of all time seem to have emerged fully formed from the ether of musical legend as if their success had been simply undeniable and preordained. As if Donna Summer didn’t so much write “Love to Love Ya Baby,” as manifest it; as if Kiss’ timeless anthem “Rock N’ Roll Nite” wasn’t so much composed, as delivered fully-realized from hard rock Valhalla directly to Paul Stanley and Gene Simmon’s fingertips.

But history knows better. And the story of Neil Bogart, the explosive, perpetual motion machine behind superstars Donna Summer,...

Rebel Wilson says her Pitch Perfect contract kept her from losing weight and living a healthier lifestyle
Image
Hollywood contracts can be a blessing and a curse. Some people wait for their entire careers to sign their names on the dotted line, while others must compromise their health and safety to land the gig. When Rebel Wilson signed her Pitch Perfect contract, she agreed to terms that went against her best interests and jeopardized her health. It’s easy to say she signed the papers, but when your big break is one signature away, who among us would have the fortitude to resist?

On a new episode of the Call Her Daddy podcast, Wilson says her Pitch Perfect contract prevented her from losing weight. Wilson played Patricia “Fat Amy” Hobart in the Pitch Perfect trilogy, a role that cast her as the “fat friend” of the singing ensemble.

“I did wait until ‘Pitch Perfect’ seemed like it was over,” Wilson said about her mission to lose weight. “I...
