The A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has some of the best heroines of the horror genre – and my personal favorite of the Elm Street heroines is Alice Johnson, played by Lisa Wilcox in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to catch up with Wilcox at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California last month and talked with her about her encounters with Freddy Krueger and the experience of working on those classic ’80s horror films. You can hear what Wilcox had to say by checking out the video embedded above.

Steven Spielberg knows a thing or two about sci-fi, especially extraterrestrials in fiction. While such stories about alien encounters often come in varying shades, the most enduring, nostalgia-laden film associated with the genre is Spielberg's "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial." A classic in almost every sense, "E.T." captures the anxieties of childhood along with its wonders, etching a journey about homecoming through the most endearing friendships. On the flip side, we have Spielberg's 1977 "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," a first-contact tale where an everyman's obsessive drive to de-mystify UFOs propels him to choose openness in the face of the unknown. Although "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" is not as heartwarming or fantastical in tone as "E.T.," it wears a Spielberg-ian brand of tender hope that runs through (almost) all of the director's sci-fi undertakings.

As anticipation builds for Steven Spielberg's upcoming UFO film, it's an opportune moment to revisit one of his most ambitious yet underappreciated sci-fi projects: the 2002 miniseries Taken. This expansive narrative, written by Leslie Bohem, produced by Spielberg, and featuring a young Dakota Fanning, masterfully intertwines decades of alien lore with deeply human stories. With its unique vision, it delivers a blend of suspense, emotion, terror, heartbreak, and intrigue that remains unparalleled.
Despite its Emmy-winning acclaim, Taken has not maintained the same cultural footprint as some of Spielberg's other alien-themed works. However, its rich storytelling and compelling performances make it a standout as far as alien tales, and science fiction in general. With intricate stories, deep emotional arcs, and some truly haunting scenes that get under your skin, it deserves the same love and appreciation as any other alien tale.

It’s time for a new episode of the Real Slashers video series, and with this one we’re heading back to the last year of the glorious decade known as the 1980s… a year in which three of the major franchises each received a sequel that wasn’t very well received. In 19889, Friday the 13th got Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan, Halloween got Halloween 5, and the Elm Street franchise got A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child (watch it Here). You can hear all about The Dream Child, one of the least popular Freddy Krueger movies, it in the video embedded above.

Your browser does not support the video tag. World War II movies often take artistic liberties with historical events, but some films strive to maintain a high degree of accuracy. Films like Saving Private Ryan and Hacksaw Ridge offer gripping stories while accurately depicting the harrowing realities of war. Dunkirk and Tora! Tora! Tora! provide faithful portrayals of historical events from multiple perspectives, while Downfall delves into the complexities of Adolf Hitler's final days.
Plenty of World War II movies take artistic liberties when recounting their true stories, either to enhance drama or because they are only interested in using historical events as a backdrop for their fictional narratives, but some are historically accurate. There is no shortage of World War II movies with glaring historical inaccuracies, ranging from the reimagined events in Pearl Harbor to the intentionally reconfigured history in Inglourious Basterds that adds comedic action. Actress/writer/stand-up comedian Jenny Slate, whose credits include Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once, the Marvel Comics adaptation Venom, and Saturday Night Live, has signed on to star in the horror film Mindful, which Deadline describes as being about “a possessed meditation app that begins to kill its followers.”
Perry Blackshear (They Look Like People) will be directing the film from a screenplay by Leslie Bohem, who got his start writing House III: The Horror Show and A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child. In the decades since, Bohem has worked on the likes of Nowhere to Run, Daylight, Dante’s Peak, The Darkest Hour, The Alamo, and the mini-series Taken. The story he has crafted for Mindful has the following synopsis: When her husband shockingly dies while meditating on the Mindful app, Angela (Slate), deeply suspicious of the new wellness craze, uncovers supernatural forces that have fused with the technology.

Like with any long-running slasher movie franchise, every horror fan has a favorite Nightmare on Elm Street sequel when asked. The most popular response is Dream Warriors, which, based on anecdotal evidence, many fans prefer even to the first film. Some like its follow-up, the Renny Harlin-directed The Dream Master, best. Very rarely, if ever, do Nightmare fans name the fifth installment, 1989’s The Dream Child, as their favorite. It’s the unloved orphan of the franchise, lacking even the novelty of Freddy’s Dead with its 3-D climax and the fact that it’s designed to end the series for good (even if Wes Craven’s New Nightmare would render said closure impotent just a few years later). For many, The Dream Child represents the franchise overstaying its welcome for one film too many before wrapping up. And, yes, the movie has its share of problems both in...

Plenty of shows these days embrace their inner batshit insanity. Challenging norms via wild narratives or atypical execution is so deep within their nature that the show thrives on such inherent madness. Here at IndieWire, we refer to such efforts as “bonkers” TV, and Hulu’s latest original series, “Shut Eye,” could certainly be a candidate if it ever fully leans into its freshly bizarre elements.
After all, this is a show that constructs a climactic scene in which a woman walks between two rows of gypsies in a candlelit East L.A. mansion as the offended parties spit on her. And that’s just the start of her punishment for breaking the gypsy code. What comes next is enough to make even hardened TV viewers raise an eyebrow.

Remember that time when Hollywood thought Twilight star Taylor Lautner was going to be the next big movie star? That didn’t quite work out for anyone, did it? But he’s back in an upcoming movie called Tracers, which doesn’t look very promising. It’s described as a parkour action thriller, and this is the synopsis:
“Tracers follows a New York City bicycle messenger, Cam (Lautner) who is the hottest thing on two wheels, but is in debt to an organized crime gang. When he crashes his bike into a sexy stranger, Nikki (Avgeropoulos), Cam is immediately seduced by her and the thrill of the high-stakes world of parkour.”
Even though I enjoy parkour, Lautner just kills the whole thing for me, and it's hard to take seriously. The film was directed by Daniel Benmayor (The Manhunt) and had an army of screenwriters that included Leslie Bohem, Matt Johnson,...

If you thought we'd seen the last of mannequin actor Taylor Lautner, think again. The star of The Twilight Saga is back, and he's still trying really hard to be a real boy with his latest role in the action thriller Traces. This time, Lautner uses his physical prowess to partake in parkour, making him a reliable bike messenger in New York City. After meeting a young woman named Nikki (Marie Avgeropoulos), learns that he can make some serious cash if he uses his developing parkour skills to help a group of street criminals pull off some heists. It looks about as generic as you'd expect, and sadly, not even the action looks all that fun. It would be better if this were about Brodie Bruce and a team of fellow comic book inkers battling injustice. Here's the first international trailer for Daniel Benmayor's Tracers from Mongkol Major:...

I don't think I'm quite the intended audience for this Tracers trailer. In a way, it pleasantly remains me of some of those action capers from the 80's that would latch onto emerging sports or fads in search of an identity. But I'm just probably too old to really invest in Taylor Lautner jumping on and off things for 90 minutes as he battles with the ethical issues inherent in being one of the world's more athletic thieves. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't watch the trailer! Chances are you'll be entertained whether or not you end up with a desire to see the movie. Hit the jump for the Tracers trailer and poster. The film was directed by Daniel Benmayor (The Manhunt) and written by Leslie Bohem, Matt Johnson, Kevin Lund and T.J. Scott. Marie Avgeropoulos, Rafi Gavron and Adam Rayner also star. The film currently does not have a U.

"This is dangerous stuff if you don't know what you're doing." After taking a break from the Twilight saga, Taylor Lautner returns to show off his Parkour skills in the international trailer for his latest action thriller Tracers. We also get two new one-sheets, which shows off the burgeoning action star in mid-stunt.
Joined by newcomer Marie Avgeropoulos, Taylor Lautner stars in this fast paced companion to Abduction. The story follows New York City bicycle messenger Cam, who is the hottest thing on two wheels, but is in debt to an organized crime gang. When he crashes his bike into a sexy stranger, Nikki, Cam is immediately seduced by her and the thrill of the high-stakes world of parkour. The two fall in love, and are soon falling off buildings as they are chased through the city.

A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child
Written by Leslie Bohem
Directed by Stephen Hopkins
1989 USA
The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise has nine films spread across three timelines (granted, two of those timelines only feature one film each). The original timeline started with the first film and ends for now with Freddy vs Jason (skipping New Nightmare in the process). However, if one wanted to watch the canon of that timeline, with all the mythology and intrigue intact, one would only have to watch the original and the 3rd, 4th, and 5th, sequels.
The first film set up the rules of the universe. Freddy can control your dreams and what happens in those dreams have real world consequences. If he kills you while you sleep, you die. It also established that items from the dream world can be brought into the real world and that Freddy can...

If there was one genre that spawned countless knock-offs (some better than the films they were imitating, others not so much) it was the slasher film. Even some films that were touted as the greats amongst the sub-genre would be still hidden in the shadows of the films they were emulating. There’s a waterfall effect to these films that start with Psycho and fall through Black Christmas onto Friday the 13th. But within the sub-genre, a splintering could be found as well, creating a mutated family hierarchy of slasherdom. Every slasher film had to find some sort of way of setting itself apart from the other, by creating some sort of different villain who was unstoppable and creative in ways that kept bodies in seats.

Chicago – It’s Valentine’s Day, and along with the impossible to get dinner reservations, the decision of which movie to see has probably spoiled this holiday as much as Walgreen roses. But the romantic drama ‘Safe Haven’ is a well performed, well paced narrative that won’t make you gag, and that includes you wishing-to-see-Die-Hard dudes.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Credit for this probably goes to director Lasse Hallström (“Chocolat,” “Casanova”) who knows a thing about romantic canoodling, and the earnest cast that includes Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel. Based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks (“The Notebook”), the story itself has an air of well established mystery, which adds some depth to the characters that make them more interesting. Hallstrom also adds some touches that are unexpected, with a nod toward Hitchcock. Also Hough and Duhamel’s characters are seeking some sort of redemption, which makes a love story more motivated and savory.

As two characters stroll down a wooded path, one looks up and says, "I love how the light comes through the trees." The camera pans up to offer a shot of tree branches as the sunlight peeks through. It's a lovely shot, but what does it mean? The same character, later in the film, again comments on the sun, this time saying, "The sun is incandescent today." Now I understand you can make an argument declaring the sun to be incandescent is grammatically correct, but at this point I think the attempt to capture nature as if we're in a Terrence Malick film and using words that may seem incandescent where a word like "brilliant" would suffice gets to the heart of what Safe Haven actually is... It's a batsh*t crazy genre mashup that mixes every sap-heavy Nicholas Sparks adaptation with bad horror movies and Lifetime thrillers. Seriously, this film is nuts!

Safe Haven marks the latest adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ bestselling original novel, following on from last year’s The Lucky One, starring Zac Efron.
This time around, Josh Duhamel (Transformers) and Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages) will be taking the leading roles, and all we’ve seen so far suggests it’s heading to be another hit over the Valentine’s weekend.

Safe Haven is the latest adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ best-selling novels.
Sparks has made an impressive career in writing romantic dramas, and they have subsequently found great successes on the big screen. And with Josh Duhamel (Transformers) and Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages) in the leads, there’s every reason to expect Safe Haven to continue the track record.
Set for a Valentine’s release in the Us, a new sixty-second TV spot has debuted online, with that same brilliant song – Lissie’s cover of Fleetwood Mac’s Go Your Own Way – playing over the top.

Led by Josh Duhamel (Transformers) and Julianne Hough (Rock of Ages), Safe Haven is the latest in a long line of adaptations of Nicholas Sparks’ original novels.
Sparks is most likely one of the most frequently-adapted novelists, whose credits most recently include the Zac Efron-led The Lucky One, and who is best known for the Rachel McAdams- and Ryan Gosling-led adaptation of The Notebook.
Due out in the Us in February, we caught the first trailer for Safe Haven earlier in the week, and now the first poster has debuted over at SheKnows.
Admittedly, it’s pretty much the same poster as The Notebook, but with Duhamel in McAdams place and Hough in Gosling’s, and captured in the sunshine instead of the rain, but that doesn’t change the fact that it still looks beautiful.

Nicholas Sparks is by far one of the most adapted authors in the Us, with more than half a dozen of his novels arriving on the big screen, most notably with the brilliant The Notebook, led by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling.
The latest adaptation to get the big screen treatment is his 2010 novel, Safe Haven, and now the first trailer for the film has arrived, and looks like a solid romantic drama, led by Josh Duhamel (Transformers) and rising young star Julianne Hough (Footloose, Rock of Ages).

Daylight

USA, 1996
People will say that there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. That may be true, but what’s in between and inside said tunnel is often drab, dingy and fairly lackluster. Such is the 1996 action adventure film, Daylight, a film with a promising premise that all but succumbs to its misplaced ambitions at pathos.
In it, Sylvester Stallone stars at Kit Latura, a man with a highly colourful name but a personality of predictable stock. Kit is a now New York City cab driver with a disgraced history as chief of the city’s Ems, but was fired from that position for something that wasn’t entirely his fault but was blamed for. Although a bit down on his luck, deep down, Kit is actually a pretty swell guy, who wouldn’t hesitate for a moment to become the hero again.

Game of Thrones director Brian Kirk was surprisingly hired (though we are hearing the deal isn’t quite sealed yet… but it will be soon) to direct Thor 2 at Marvel a few weeks back but news today suggests he may be trying to get another film off the ground before he throws the hammer back at Chris Hemsworth.
Variety reports that Kirk has entered talks with Sony to direct Paper Wings, a Oscar baiting rodeo romance movie that Tom Cruise has been developing for years as a potential starrer. Cruise has long wanted to play the leading role of the rodeo champ who falls in love with an aspiring country singer, which at one time had the attachment of Reese Witherspoon as an obvious attempt to re-strike the magic from her Oscar winning turn in Walk the Line – though we hear she has long moved on from the project.

It looks like Brian Kirk is still negotiating to helm Thor 2 for Marvel. However, he’s also lining up to direct Paper Wings, a long-in-development project that has attracted the interest of Tom Cruise.
Since Cruise won’t have an opening in his work schedule until the late part of 2012, it’s unlikely that Kirk would begin work on the latter project before the Thor sequel. He could followup the comic book flick about a formerly cocky superhero by directing a character drama about… a formerly cocky cowboy.
