‘The School Duel’ Teaser: Indie ‘Hunger Games’ Riff Finds a Dystopian Solution to School Shootings
Image
Todd Wiseman Jr.’s “The School Duel” is a near-future dystopian thriller that, at first, you may think you’ve seen before. The indie film, by its very concept, evokes “The Hunger Games” and “Battle Royale.” But it has a rawness to it, plugged deeply into America’s own current epidemic of school shootings and the gun culture that makes them possible, that also makes it absolutely unlike those movies.

IndieWire exclusively debuts the first teaser for “The School Duel” below. The thriller stars then 13-year-old Kue Lawrence as a troubled seventh grader, Samuel Miller, recruited into the Florida governor’s shocking solution for mass school shootings: The School Duel of the title, which pits teenage boys against one another in arena combat, wielding Ar-15s, shotguns, and other deadly weapons until only one is left standing. Some of the boys have been training for years for the duel. Others...

Wiseman wrote and produced the film. It’s his directorial feature debut. The film debuted in competition at the 50th Deauville American Film Festival and won the Canal+ Special Jury Prize.

Forced into a violent arena where the victor is celebrated as a hero, Sammy becomes the reluctant protagonist in a brutal spectacle that pushes the boundaries of morality and endurance.

Werewolf By Night Director Michael Giacchino On Potential Sequel: "We'll Get There"
Image
Werewolf By Night, Marvel Studios' first ever Special presentation, debuted on Disney+ in 2022, and opened the door to a whole new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe that's yet to be further explored.

The black-and-white Halloween Special really was a first for the franchise, paying homage to the classic Universal monster movies with its noirish style, creepy atmosphere and heightened levels of violence.

Werewolf By Night introduced several new characters such as Elsa Bloodstone (Laura Donnelly) Ted, aka Man-Thing (Carey Jones), and the titular lycanthrope himself, Jack Russell (Gael García Bernal), and fans have been eager for an update on their potential return.

Director Michael Giacchino previously confirmed that discussions about doing more with the characters have taken place, but it sounds like any plans for a follow-up episode have been put on the back-burner.

"There's been a lot going on in the industry and everyone sort of recalibrating. I...

Everything to Know About Tigris Snow Ahead of "The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes"
Image
The release of "The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes," the "Hunger Games" prequel, is just around the corner, and it's the perfect time to catch up on everything "Hunger Games" before the release of the film on Nov. 17. The prequel, which takes place 64 years prior to the events of the Hunger Games trilogy, follows the story of Coriolanus Snow (played by Tom Blyth) and his relationship with Lucy Gray Baird, a tribute and eventual victor of the 10th Hunger Games (played by Rachel Zegler).

The film will introduce new characters like Casca Highbottom (Peter Dinklage), the dean of the Academy, and Dr. Volumnia Gaul (Viola Davis), the head game maker. But the prequel will also feature familiar characters like Tigris Snow, Coriolanus's cousin, and one of the key characters that helped Katniss in the Capitol in "Mockingjay." In the original movies, Tigris is played by Eugenie Bondurant, but she'll be...

Image
Ahead of the theatrical debut of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, Lionsgate dropped a behind-the-scenes featurette, providing Hunger Games fans an in-depth look into Panem before President Snow’s reign.

The video begins with new extended footage, featuring closer looks at the main characters including the antagonists, Viola Davis’ Dr. Volumnia Gaul and Peter Dinklage’s Casca Highbottom, who are both responsible for the implementation of the Hunger Games. Volumnia and Casca are expected to have a major impact on Coriolanus Snow’s transformation into becoming the merciless leader he’s meant to be. 2023 Trailer for Marvel's 'Werewolf by Night in Color' Horror Special
Image
"More terrifying, more gruesome, all in color." Marvel Studios has unveiled a brand new 2023 trailer for their spin-off Halloween "Special Presentation" event called Werewolf by Night. It initially debuted last year during October as a one-off, one-hour-long B&w horror film from Marvel, directed by famed composer Michael Giacchino. It's now being re-released fully in color in 2023 (as "Werewolf by Night in Color"). The special stars the wonderfully talented actor Gael García Bernal as Jack Russell, a lycanthrope superhero who fights crime using the abilities given to him by a curse brought on by his bloodline. The great cast also includes Laura Donnelly, Harriet Sansom Harris, Eugenie Bondurant, & Kirk R. Thatcher. The film introduces a whole bunch of new monsters from the Marvel universe, most notably the big lovable tree monster "Man-Thing" aka "Ted". I thought it played just fine in B&w last year, but I guess I'll watch it again in color this year.

Where to Watch 'Werewolf by Night'
Image
2022 was a big year for Disney+ and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Not only did Marvel Studios release three new shows—Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law—and a collection of animated shorts—I Am Groot—but they also premiered their first special: Werewolf by Night. This one-off story focuses on Jack Russell, a man who in the comics can turn into a bloodthirsty werewolf every three nights of a full moon due to his lycanthropic ancestry. First reported in August 2021 and officially revealed a year later during the Marvel Studios panel at the 2022 D23 expo, Werewolf By Night stars Gael García Bernal (Mozart in the Jungle) as the title character and Laura Donnelly (The Nevers) as monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone. Other cast members include Harriet Sansom Harris (Addams Family Values), Al Hamacher (Cobra Kai), Eugenie Bondurant (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It), Leonardo Nam...

The Hunger Games Prequel The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes What We Want to See
Image
After eight long years, fans of the Hunger Games can return to the bloody dystopian world of Panem in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, coming this November. Set sixty years before the main films, we will see the 10th Hunger Games and an entirely new aspect of the society that forces children to fight to the death in order to serve as both oppressive control over the subjugated Districts and wild entertainment.

Based on Suzanne Collins' novel of the same name, Songbirds and Snakes will focus on the President of Panem Coriolanus "Coryo" Snow (Tom Blyth) when he was just a high school senior long before he became a tyrannical dictator and the female tribute from District 12 Lucy Gray Baird (Rachel Zegler), whom he must mentor for the Games.

Going so far back in time in the history of Panem, there are a lot of questions and mysteries from...

Who Is In The Hunger Games: The Ballad Of Songbirds And Snakes? Cast & Character Guide
Image
With The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes revealed as a prequel to The Hunger Games trilogy, the world will see a new cast and characters introduced to the franchise. The Hunger Games movie franchise began in 2009, and followed Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence in the movies) as she competes in a violent, gladiatorial-like fight with other young adults. The series ends with Katniss leading a revolution against the Capitol and ending the threat of the Games hanging over the country.

The overarching villain of the Hunger Games trilogy is Coriolanus Snow, president of Panem and overseer of the Games; and, is played by Donald Sutherland in the movies. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes is directed by Francis Lawrence and switches the script by making Coriolanus “Coryo” Snow the protagonist. Coryo’s early life is depicted and shows how he grew from a wide-eyed kind young man,...

Every Character In Werewolf By Night, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Directed by Michael Giacchino, better known as the composer responsible for exceptional scores like those for "The Batman" and 2009's "Star Trek," "Werewolf by Night" is not your standard Marvel fare. That's clear from the opening credits, which unfold in a moody black and white, and are interspersed with violent claw slashes and crackling lightning bolts reminiscent of James Whale's "Frankenstein."

Marvel has dipped its toe into horror before, namely with the gleeful gore of "Blade" and Sam Raimi's chillingly macabre "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness." Accordingly, "Werewolf by Night" feels like an affectionate love letter to the classic creature features of yore. Its premise is simple: Famed monster hunter Ulysses Bloodstone has shuffled from this mortal coil, leaving his position vacant and his magical artifact up for grabs. A group of fellow monster slayers are invited by Ulysses' widow to compete for his title, which...

‘Werewolf by Night’ Review (Disney+)
Image
Stars: Gael García Bernal, Laura Donnelly, Harriet Sansom Harris, Kirk R. Thatcher, Eugenie Bondurant | Written by Peter Cameron, Heather Quinn | Directed by Michael Giacchino

On a dark and sombre night, a secret cabal of monster hunters emerge from the shadows and gather at the Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader; the attendees are thrust into a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic.

When I was much younger (probably from the time I was eight years old up until the time I was about sixteen), I thought every single thing the Marvel Cinematic Universe did was the best. I was always the one saying that they were constantly outdoing themselves with each new release. But… I was wrong. The MCU these days is just not the same as it used to be, and even some of their older projects have me questioning some of their quality. It seems as though,...

Marvel’s Werewolf by Night TV Review
Image
Plot: A secret group of monster hunters gather at Bloodstone Manor following the death of their leader and engage in a mysterious and deadly competition for a powerful relic, which will bring them face to face with a dangerous monster.

Review: Billed as a special presentation, Marvel Studios’ Werewolf by Night is in fact a standalone story that is too short to be a feature film and not long enough to be a series. Instead, it is about the length of a single episode of television but packs enough material to serve as the template for Marvel Studios to pump out any number of stories that don’t quite fit the bill for a movie or a show. The experiment works as Werewolf by Night is a blast from start to finish that allows Marvel Studios to play with more unusual aspects of their comic book source material without being dependent on massive budgets.

Werewolf By Night director teases that Marvel wants more one-off specials
Image
The upcoming Werewolf By Night is being billed as the first Special Presentation in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it likely won’t be the last. While speaking with SFX Magazine (via GamesRadar), Werewolf By Night director Michael Giacchino teased that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige is eager to follow this with more “one-and-done” Marvel stories.

There have been rumours that Marvel Studios might transform some of their upcoming TV shows into these Special Presentations instead. Nothing has been confirmed at this point, but it does give Marvel another way to approach these stories. “It was perfect for me,” Michael Giacchino said of the hour-long runtime. “Because I wanted to do something in the vein of a really fun episode of The Twilight Zone or The Night Gallery.“

Werewolf by Night’s Laura Donnelly on Pushing Boundaries in the MCU
Image
With director Michael Giacchino’s Werewolf by Night arriving on Disney+ October 7th, I recently got to speak with Laura Donnelly about playing Elsa Bloodstone in the Marvel Studios special presentation. Werewolf by Night is about a secret cabal of monster hunters that meet up at the Bloodstone Temple following the death of their leader. The purpose of the meeting is to decide who will be their new leader and the one who will take possession of a powerful relic. Inspired by horror films of the 1930s and 1940s, Werewolf by Night explores a new corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and also stars Gael García Bernal, Harriet Sansom Harris, Leonardo Nam, Kirk R. Thatcher, and Eugenie Bondurant.

Gael García Bernal in Werewolf by Night (2022)

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It – Who is the Occultist?
Main poster artwork for Al Carretta's 4th indie feature 'The Devil Made Me Do It.'
This article contains The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It spoilers.

Though the latest Conjuring movie, The Devil Made Me Do It, is named after the Arne Johnson murder case, whereby a young man claimed the crime he committed was caused by demonic possession, there’s an entirely new subplot that carries the body of the new film.

After the supposedly possessed Arne Johnson is held in custody awaiting trial for the murder of his girlfriend’s landlord, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga) are on a mission to discover how and why these possessions took place. While the Johnson case is based on real events, the reasons behind the possession, as posed within The Devil Made Me Do It, are completely fictional.

No matter! This allows the filmmakers to introduce the shadowy figure of The Occultist (played by Eugenie Bondurant), as well as...

The Conjuring 3 Takes a Lot of Creative Liberties, Especially With This Character
Image
As you've probably already guessed, the Conjuring movies, while based on Ed and Lorraine Warren's actual investigations, don't exactly follow reality beat by beat. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It, or The Conjuring 3, is no exception. The latest addition to the Conjuring universe follows the infamous 1981 case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson (Ruairi O'Connor), a young man who claimed in court that the devil made him kill his landlord Alan Bono. The film doesn't go through Johnson's legal proceedings with a fine comb - the horror movie focuses more on how an occultist named Isla (Eugenie Bondurant) curses Johnson and his girlfriend Debbie Glatzel's (Sarah Catherine Hook) family. Johnson and the Glatzels are very much real people, but is the occultist an actual person? Long story short, Isla appears to be a fictional character who's used to propel the film's plot forward.

So, what's real in The Conjuring 3?...

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It Ending Explained
Image
This article contains The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It spoilers. Read our spoiler-free review here.

The sun is shining brightly as Arne Cheyenne Johnson (Ruairi O’Connor) stands up before the courtroom. On this bright, seemingly glorious day in God’s country, the young man who once sacrificed his own body to a demon in order to save a child is about to receive his verdict from the jury. And, even before the film’s ending crawl explains what that sentence will be, he appears aware enough to know he’s about to go to prison. Yet the musical score of The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It swells with optimistic acceptance, and the scene is is unmistakably upbeat. How can this be a happy ending?

Because what can be so bad on a day like this after the long night everyone just endured? Seriously, think about it:...

Film Review: ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’ is Haunted By Its Past
Chicago – The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is our third official, not-counting-the-spinoffs foray into the “based on true events” shenanigans of Ed and Lorraine Warren, and it’s starting to show. If you’re a tea drinker and equally as frugal as I am, you have reused a tea bag to make a second (sometimes even a third) cup of tea.

Rating: 2.5/5.0

The first cup will always be the strongest with the second cup still having a potent flavor, you just have to let it steep longer than the first cup. Everyone knows that by the time you get to making a third cup out of the same tea bag, the flavor infused in the water is a pale ghost of what it once was, tasting like a flat La Croix. The name of this watered-down flavor is called The Conjuring 3, but once you taste it you...

Fear Of Rain Was ‘Eye-Opening’ Experience For Star Madison Iseman
Image
In Fear of Rain, Madison Iseman (Annabelle Comes Home) plays Rain Burroughs, a young woman attempting to lead a stable life while she struggles with a diagnosis of schizophrenia. Despite her best efforts, and that of her loving parents (Katherine Heigl and Harry Connick Jr.), Rain is often not sure what is real and what is a hallucination — including Caleb (Israel Broussard), a fellow at school who takes an interest in her even as she wonders whether he’s real.

But when Rain becomes convinced that the seemingly normal teacher living next door (Eugenie Bondurant) is hiding a terrible secret in her attic, Rain goes against her parents’ advice and decides to prove she’s right, enlisting Caleb to help her even if she’s not even sure she can trust her own senses.

Written and directed by Castille Landon (Albion: The Enchanted Stallion), Fear of Rain is not just...

How Fear of Rain Breaks New Ground For Thrillers
Image
With the new psychological thriller Fear of Rain, actor turned writer-director Castille Landon takes a sharp turn away from her two previous directorial efforts, the family films Apple of My Eye and Albion: The Enchanted Stallion. Her third movie focuses on Rain Burroughs (Madison Iseman of the last two Jumanji sequels and Annabelle Comes Home), a young girl diagnosed with schizophrenia who isn’t sure what’s real and what isn’t — including the boy at school (Israel Broussard) who takes an interest in her.

Despite the entreaties of her parents (Katherine Heigl and Harry Connick Jr.) and the threat of being hospitalized, Rain does believe in the reality of one thing: that Dani (Eugenie Bondurant), the seemingly normal teacher who lives next door, is doing something awful in her attic.

Filmed before the pandemic gripped the world, Fear of Rain touches on issues of mental illness and attempts to...

‘Fear of Rain’ Review: A Schizophrenic Teen Turns Sleuth
Image
“Am I crazy or is this really happening?” is by now a fairly familiar hook for thrillers. But Castille Landon’s “Fear of Rain” gets some fresh mileage from it by embedding us in the perspective of a teenager diagnosed with schizophrenia — and whose worries are thus dismissed as delusional when she decides a next-door neighbor is up to something nefarious.

Middling at best in terms of suspense mechanics, and not the most perceptive treatment of mental illness you’ll ever see, this nonetheless compels interest as a well-acted drama-cum-mystery whose heroine (like the kid in “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time”) has some unique challenges to her amateur sleuthing. Lionsgate is releasing the feature to available theaters and on demand Feb. 12.

Hopes are not raised particularly high by the opening, that stock horror trope of a panicked, barefoot young woman being chased through woods by some...

Pollyanna McIntosh in Official Trailer for Indie Horror Sequel 'Darlin'
"You have now heard... a wild child came to us." Dark Sky Films has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror film titled Darlin', the feature directorial debut of Scottish actress Pollyanna McIntosh. The film is actually a sequel to the cult horror The Woman (2011), which starred Pollyanna McIntosh as a feral woman. She jumped on board and decide to write & direct the sequel, and star in it, some 8 years later. This one stars Lauryn Canny as another young feral woman found and sent to a Catholic hospital. Once there she undergoes a process of rehabilitation in an attempt to tame her savage behavior. But then her mother shows up to take her home and things get bloody. The cast includes Bryan Batt, Nora-Jane Noone, Cooper Andrews, Eugenie Bondurant, Peyton Wich, and Mackenzie Graham. This looks intensely grungy and grimy and brutal, not sure if it's going to be...

SXSW Film Review: ‘Darlin”
Though his books were seldom issued by major publishing houses, recently deceased author Jack Ketchum has become one of the big screen’s more frequently adapted U.S. novelists. “Darlin’” isn’t based on a Ketchum tome, per se, but it does have a through line to his work: It’s a sequel to Lucky McKee’s 2011 “The Woman,” which followed Andrew van den Houten’s 2009 “Offspring,” whose print source was a sequel to Ketcham’s 1980 debut novel “Off Season.” Ketchum earned writing credits on both films, and “Off Season” was the start of a series about a cannibalistic clan in the woods of rural Maine. At the end of “The Woman,” the titular feral captive of a “civilized” family kills her keepers and returns to the wilderness, the family’s children in tow.

While “The Woman” was a queasy psychological horror-thriller about abuse in many forms, the much less...

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 review

After a long wait, the final part of The Hunger Games is here. Will Katniss and co get a proper send-off?

This review contains spoilers for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1

Brace yourself. The end of The Hunger Games is nigh, and it’s gonna hurt like hell.

At the end of Mockingjay Part 1, we left Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) tearfully watching her sometime lover Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) thrash against his restraints. District 13 had rescued the captive rebels from the Capitol, but weeks of torture had left them weak, confused, and even dangerous. President Coin (Julianne Moore) was gearing up her army for a new strike against the tyrannical President Snow’s (Donald Sutherland) regime, but actually winning the war looked like an impossible dream.

It was a bummer of a place to leave the story for a year, and it’s still a bummer when...

'Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2' IMAX Poster Gets Bloody
Jennifer Lawrence in The Hunger Games (2012)
Just one day after the new trailer debuted for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2, Lionsgate has debuted a stylish new IMAX poster, featuring Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and the tagline "Nothing Can Prepare You For The End." Wired debuted this one-sheet, which features plenty of intriguing symbolism, such as the drops of blood shown on the white roses. President Snow (Donald Sutherland) has always used white roses as a symbolic gesture, leaving them as veiled threats towards Katniss, but this poster also serves as an "in-world" piece of propaganda for Katniss and the growing rebellion.

It's also intriguing that Katniss' eye, the same one she uses to aim her bow and arrow, is obscured by one of these white roses, but we can see blood running down her face, just below the rose. Below Katniss we see the iconic Mockingjay symbol, with a slew of Peacekeepers surrounding the wings,...
