Image
Tune in to “The Masked Singer” on Wednesday for the first theme night of season 12: a salute to the classic movie “Footloose.” Judge Robin Thicke is set to kick the show off in style, singing the Oscar-nominated title track. Later on in the hour, as you’ll see from the preview above, “Footloose” star Kevin Bacon makes an appearance.

The four remaining contestants from Group A — Buffalo, Ship, Showbird and Woodpecker — are set to take to the stage to perform tunes from this chart-topping soundtrack. Among the songs that they could sing are a trio of Top 10 hits first heard in the movie: “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” by Deniece Williams; “Almost Paradise” by Mike Reno and Ann Wilson, and “Holding Out for a Hero” by Bonnie Tyler. Other possible tracks include “Somebody’s Eyes” by Karla Bonoff and “I’m Free (Heaven Helps the Man)” by Kenny Loggins,...

Jd Souther Dies: Singer-Songwriter Behind Hits By The Eagles And Linda Ronstadt Was 78
Image
Jd Souther, a Songwriters Hall of Famer whose collaborations with The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor helped define the country-tinged Laurel Canyon/Southern California rock sound of the 1970s, has died. He was 78.

His reps said Souther died peacefully at his home in Sandia Park, Nm, but did not provide a cause or date of death.

Born John David Souther on November 2, 1945, in Detroit — he went by Jd, sans periods, throughout nearly all of his professional career — Souther was raised in Amarillo, Texas. He moved to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, where he soon, and fortuitously, formed a band called Longbranch Pennywhistle with musician-songwriter Glenn Frey, a fellow Detroit native. The two would continue their songwriting collaboration even after Frey went on to cofound The Eagles, one of the most successful rock bands in history.

Together, Souther and Frey would contribute some of the Eagles’ most enduring and beloved songs,...

Linda Ronstadt
‘Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice’ Pays Tribute to Pioneering ’70s Songbird
Linda Ronstadt
One of the many reminders of the often discounted greatness of Linda Ronstadt arrives about 30 minutes into Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman’s documentary Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice. We see the biggest female rock star of the time (1976) in a studio with her band, filming what’s essentially an early music video. The song — Karla Bonoff’s sad-sack ballad of epic proportions, “Lose Again” — builds in gale-force winds with each verse and chorus. The band appears to be instrument-synching with the track, but Ronstadt, standing behind a microphone,...

Dolly Parton
Watch Linda Ronstadt, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris Talk ‘Trio’ Genesis
Dolly Parton
“Linda could literally sing anything,” Dolly Parton says of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member Linda Ronstadt in the forthcoming documentary, The Sound of My Voice. Featuring new and archival interview footage with Ronstadt and several of her musical collaborators and longtime friends, the film is a stirring reminder of Ronstadt’s vocal prowess across musical genres, made all the more poignant by the singer’s battle with Parkinson’s disease and her subsequent retirement from performing in 2009.

The Sound of My Voice touches on many facets of Ronstadt’s life: her Mexican ancestry,...

AfterElton Briefs: Republican Superheroes, "Arachnoquake," And This Calendar's Days May Be Numbered
Birthday Shoutouts! Wilson Cruz (above) is 38, the faboo Karla Bonoff is 59 (Karla wrote songs for the likes of Linda Ronstadt and Bonnie Raitt, and had her own 80's classic with "Personally", which is #25 on the Official Snicks Top 100 Of The 80's), and Missing Persons co-founder Terry Bozio is 61. Lady Gaga has listed Terry's ex-wife Dale as an influence. Um, yeah ... I can see it.

Blu-Ray Review: ‘Footloose’ Lacks Dance, Bores With Hokey Melodrama
Chicago – One of the easiest ways for a creatively starved studio to manufacture a box office hit is to bank on the nostalgia of a beloved cult classic. A remake will not only attract old fans but inspire new moviegoers to rent the deluxe edition of the original, now carrying the self important label of, “The Film That Defined a Generation.”

But will viewers raised on the kinetic rhythms of “Step Up” embrace Herbert Ross’ 1984 anti-musical? I doubt it. For all of its preachy monologues about the importance of dancing as a mode of self-expression, there’s not much actual hoofing in the picture. Long stretches of the picture focus instead on the broadly dramatized conflict between the puritanical book-burning adults of Bomont, Georgia, and the rebellious top-tapping kids led by a mysterious outsider from (gasp!) Chicago.

Blu-Ray Rating: 2.5/5.0

The plot reads like “Picnic” fused with a cheesy Avalon/Funicello beach picture,...

Stone Poneys Star Kenny Edwards Lost to Cancer
Stone Poneys star Kenny Edwards has died at the age of 64. The country musician passed away on Wednesday, August 18 just weeks after he was hospitalized in Denver, Colorado. The guitarist/singer, who battled cancer and a blood disorder in recent years, collapsed while on tour with his long time collaborator Karla Bonoff and was air-lifted to a hospital near his home in Santa Barbara, California prior to his death, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Edwards shot to fame after founding the Stone Poneys in the 1960s, the group which launched Linda Ronstadt's career, but the band disbanded shortly after the release of its breakthrough hit, "Different Drum". He went on to form the folk-rock band Bryndle with Bonoff and later worked as a singer/songwriter and guitarist for numerous acts including Stevie Nicks and Don Henley, before releasing his debut solo album in 2002.

Ronstadt has paid tribute to her former bandmate,...
