Where to Watch Glen Powell’s ‘Twisters’? (Streaming & VOD)
Image
The much anticipated standalone sequel to the 1996 Jan de Bont film Twister is finally here and seems to be a hit among the audience and the critics. Directed by Academy Award Nominee Lee Isaac Chung from a screenplay by Mark L. Smith, Twisters has all the destruction, mayhem, and cool characters you want in a film like this.

Twisters follows the story of Kate, a former storm chaser, who is lured back into the fields for one last time by her friend, Javi, to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. As she begins working with Javi, Kate meets Tyler Owens, a charming but reckless social media superstar who built his fanbase by chasing storms. As storm season gets more dangerous, Kate, Tyler, and the people in their team find themselves fighting against a storm to survive.

Twisters Makes One Glaring Omission (And It's On Purpose)
Image
Warning: The forecast appears to be sunny with a 100% chance of spoilers. Read on only after watching "Twisters."

Ready to re-enter the suck zone? Almost 30 years after the original movie touched down and made box-office history, "Twisters" has arrived to put a new spin (see what I did there?) on the summer blockbuster and reintroduce moviegoers to the biggest cinematic baddie of them all: the weather. The first film told a pretty straightforward story about a motley crew of storm chasers led by Helen Hunt's Jo and Bill Paxton's Bill, who attempt to fend off both rivals and flying cows alike as they track down tornadoes all across the Oklahoma countryside. Despite featuring a grand total of zero legacy-character holdovers and almost no plot connections to what came before, the sequel neatly channels its predecessor's approach with a refreshingly simple, '90s throwback flair, as I wrote in my review for /Film.

Twisters Review: Glen Powell is a Force of Nature in This Unapologetic Entertainment
Image
Lagrangian mechanics! The Fujiwara effect! Who among us isn't titillated by such subjects? It's rare, however, that poindextrous, meteorologically-inclined audiences can find these matters addressed in big-budget Hollywood flicks. Thankfully, director Lee Isaac Chung (Minari) has broken the mold with Twisters, a film of cloud-spotting, storm-watching, and forces as elemental as two folks digging each other. With a script by Mark L. Smith, as sweet and airily light as cirrus-like cotton candy, this is the only film of the season to feel distinctly like a "summer" picture -- for better and worse. The moviegoing audience is lucky to be presented with some good old-fashioned, frill-free fun.

Daisy Edgar-Jones (Normal People) leads Twisters as Kate Cooper, a meteorologist and budding PhD student who has foreswore her discipline as a storm-chaser after a tornado claimed the lives of two friends and a boyfriend five years ago. Fair enough. Now, working in New York City,...

Atomic Twister (2002)
Twisters review | The best weather-em-up in years
Atomic Twister (2002)
Nearly 30 years later, we now get Twister 2, cunningly entitled Twisters. But you know what? There’s more to this than a bit of wind.

When, in 1983, Anthony Perkins reprised the role of Norman Bates for a sequel to Alfred Hitchcock’s classic Psycho, there was much scoffing. On the one hand: a sequel to Psycho! Are you mad? On the other, it’d been – get this – 23 years since the first film came out. What kind of gap between a first and second film was that? Further madness.

Twisters, then.

Twenty eight years after Jan de Bont’s weather-em-up Twister threw cows at the screen and had the brilliant duo of Helen Hunt and the much-missed Bill Paxton chasing tornados, Hollywood has spat out a sequel.

Why? Well, money.

It’s clearly a project that follows the sequel template, as the title tells you. You got one twister in the first film,...

‘Twisters’ Review: Disaster Movie Reboot Offers Spectacle But Little Substance
Image
The original Twister, released in 1996, emerged during a golden age in Hollywood that erased the previously held threshold that kept A-list actors away from B-movie material. It didn’t get much better than casting John Malkovich as Cyrus the Virus in Jerry Bruckheimer’s 1997 blockbuster bruiser Con Air, but making Helen Hunt the lead in a disaster movie — just a year away from winning an Oscar opposite Jack Nicholson in As Good as It Gets — certainly gave Twister some unexpected gravitas.

Twisters, however, is part of a more recent phenomenon: the Sundance-to-tentpole pipeline that started in 2012 when Colin Trevorrow went straight from Safety Not Guaranteed to Jurassic World.

Twisters marks a similar leap forward for director Lee Isaac Chung, who scored a big indie breakout hit in 2020 with the low-key family drama Minari. The two films share some rustic overlap — Chung shoots Oklahoma with the same affection he previously gave to Arkansas — but,...

‘The Highwaymen’ Review (Netflix)
Stars: Kevin Costner, Woody Harrelson, Kathy Bates, John Carroll Lynch, Thomas Mann, Dean Denton, Kim Dickens, William Sadler, W. Earl Brown, David Furr, Jason Davis, Josh Caras, David Born, Brian F. Durkin, Kaley Wheless | Written by John Fusco | Directed by John Lee Hancock

The Highwaymen – not to be confused with the Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson and Kris Krisoffsten country supergroup – stars Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson as Frank Hamer and Maney Gault, respectively and is directed by John Lee Hancock in what is the latest release from streaming giant Netflix. However, much like the bulk of originals that drop out of nowhere from said streaming platform, The Highwaymen is a flat and drastically reduced emotionally resonating character debacle that has no life or energy in its bloated 132 minutes running time.

Sam Mendes’ Road to Perdition or Michael Mann’s Public Enemies this is most certainly not. Sadly, Hancock’s film...

Sarah Hyland and Wells Adams Celebrate First Christmas Together By Picking Out a Tree & Watching 'Elf'!
Wells Adams
You know things are getting serious when you pick out a tree together!

Sarah Hyland and boyfriend Wells Adams got into the holiday spirit on Saturday, picking out their very first Christmas tree as a couple.

The Modern Family star shared a selfie of the two in front of the evergreen, appropriately adding tree and heart emojis to her caption. In the pic, Hyland is wearing her chocolate brown locks wavy, plus a cream-hued coat and her fave pair of clear glasses, while Adams flashes a shy smile, looking cool in a black leather jacket.

The pair didn't waste any time decorating once they got home, playing Elf in the background as they loaded the branches up with food-themed ornaments, including ketchup, a pizza, a martini and his-and-her themed beer and wine glasses, then topped it off with a Stranger Things "Christmas Star."
