One Of The Greatest Movie Plot Twists Of All Time Was Shot In Malibu's Point Dume
Image
What does the end of the world look like? It's a question that's been asked by many a genre filmmaker, especially as the post-apocalyptic (and just plain apocalyptic) film rose in popularity following the invention of nuclear weaponry. For most filmmakers, the setting for the apocalypse tends to fall into one of two categories: It's either a sprawling urban ruin, with once-gleaming skyscrapers now in disarray, or a vast desert landscape where the detritus of the old world is scattered throughout miles of sand and rock. Very few films depicting the end of the world decide to make the apocalypse look like an idyllic ocean view vacation.

Yet, that's precisely what 1968's "Planet of the Apes" did, as the production chose to stage its climactic twist on and around Malibu's Point Dume. Sitting on the outskirts of Los Angeles in Southern California, the combination of beach and a prominent rock...

The Iconic Statue of Liberty Twist in the Original ‘Planet of the Apes’ Movie: Explained
Image
While there have been several iterations of the iconic Planet of the Apes, nothing has the pop cultural significance of the 1968 original. The sci-fi film did not just conform to the tropes of the genre, but also included political commentary, elements of horror, and an insane twist that still hits hard despite being one of the most recognized images in human history.

The iconic half-buried Statue of Liberty is a huge revelation in the movie and one hell of a way to end it. It reveals something that everyone obviously feared but never dared to think of, as it is too tragic and dark a scenario to think of. So, what exactly does the symbol of the Statue of Liberty mean?

What happens in the 1968 version of Planet of the Apes? A still from Planet of the Apes (1968) | Credits: 20th Century Fox

Will ‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Give Franchise Its First VFX Oscar?
Image
Spectacle has been essential to keeping moviegoing alive and pushing filmmaking forward, and the impact of VFX on the industry cannot be overstated. As major studios look for more avenues to entice audiences into theaters in this rapidly shifting world of technology, in which almost every form of entertainment is at our fingertips, the promise of breathtaking set pieces on the big screen remains one of the biggest selling points for audiences. Ideally, the best achievement in visual effects Oscar sets a bar in terms of what can be attained through technology, creativity, budget and audience investment.

As a result, the category differs from the others in that it suggests a measurable goal for productions to reach. If a blockbuster with dinosaurs can’t look at least as good as the industry-shifting visual effects on display in Jurassic Park (1993), then there’s still work to be done. Those same industry-shifting...

M. Night Shyamalan's Favorite Plot Twist Is From A Sci-Fi Classic
Image
The best M. Night Shyamalan twist endings are the ones that bolster the larger point his movies are making. Consider his 1999 breakout success "The Sixth Sense," a film about how honest and open communication can allow us to make peace with our ghosts. Or take his 2004 offering "The Village," a tale about loss and grief and how they can spur people to reject social progress in ways that are suspect at best and outright harmful at worst. For as much as that movie's third act rug-pull was unjustly ragged on in its time, the actual message it was meant to drive home (one that was especially pointed for U.S. audiences arriving three years after the September 11th terrorist attacks) came through all the louder for those willing and able to hear it.

There are occasions, admittedly, when Shyamalan has included a convoluted denouement seemingly for its own sake, as...

10 Movies That Prove Reviving Iconic Franchises Can Actually Work
Image
Nowadays, it is not at all uncommon for iconic movie franchises to be revived. Studios know that one of the most effective ways to succeed at the box office is by creating new films that already have massive fan bases, as this can essentially guarantee that the film will attract a large audience. Unfortunately, many of these franchise revivals prove to be rather unsuccessful when it comes to their actual quality. A crucial danger of reviving old franchises is focusing too heavily on simply showing fans what they want to see, instead of actually providing a well-constructed story.

Thankfully, not every big-screen revival falls victim to this issue. Over the years, a handful of films have managed to find the proper balance between celebrating what audiences love about the original franchise, while also adding elements that help make the new addition a worthwhile inclusion. In doing this, the filmmakers have...

Tim Burton's 5 Movie Remakes, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Tim Burton's career, which included quite a few remakes, has reached many wonderfully inventive high points and a few low points. From ghosts and superheroes to talking animals and magic beings, Tim Burton has one of the most distinct styles in Hollywood. The fact that some stars are often described as "Tim Burton actors" due to how many times they have worked with him is just one of many examples of how Burton became a genre of his own.

However, for every great original film he's directed over the years, from Beetlejuice to Ed Wood and Edward Scissorhands, he's also been in the directing chair for a series of remakes that differ in quality. Taking on a film that already has an expectant fan base is never an easy task, but when done correctly, it can be a wonderful re-imagining of a beloved existing IP. Tim Burton's filmography consists of hits and misses,...

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Sequel: Cast, Story & Everything We Know
Image
The classic sci-fi franchise grew even larger in 2024 with the release of the latest Planet of the Apes movie in 2024, and a Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel will continue the trilogy. The film franchise debuted with the release of the 1968 movie, loosely based on Pierre Boulle's novel, which concerns a band of astronauts crash-landing on Earth in the distant future to find it is run by intelligent apes who enslave humans. Across a slew of sequels throughout the '70s, the hit movie grew into a franchise, even if critical and commercial results dipped dramatically.

A failed Planet of the Apes remake by Tim Burton attempted to reboot the beloved series, but the franchise's true return to glory came with the release of 2011's Rise of the Planet of the Apes. The blockbuster prequel kicked off a trilogy of films throughout the 2010s that explained humanity's...

Planet of the Apes (2001)
The 10 Biggest Differences Between The Planet of the Apes Original Movie and Book
Planet of the Apes (2001)
Planet of the Apes has become one of the worlds most beloved franchises, but this would not be possible without the original 1963 novel and its first film adaptation from 1968. The original book was titled La Plante des singes and written by French author Pierre Boulle. It told the story of three human explorers from Earth who visited a planet dominated by intelligent and civilized great apes. This was also true of the film version starring Charlton Heston, although, upon further inspection, there were several striking differences.

While the Planet of the Apes movie franchise has had its share of sequels, remakes, and reboots, Boulles novel was a singular experience that told a story that, in many ways, was significantly different from the 1968 film version. With several changes concerning characters, themes, and even its iconic ending, when all is said and done, theres never truly been a faithful adaptation of Boulles original novel.

Tim Burton's Two Worst Movies, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Tim Burton rose during a very peculiar time in popular culture. The terse, depressive adult dramas of the 1970s had given way to the ultra-slick, spectacle-heavy blockbusters of the 1980s as a new generation of adventure films entered the marketplace, helmed by precocious filmmakers who spent their youths in actual film schools. At the same time, the financial and cultural conservatism of the Reagan administration had amplified the voices of rebellious punkers and enterprising artistic weirdos who wanted nothing to do with the commercial world. The odd circumstances -- an increase of money paired with a general antiestablishment malaise -- were just right for anti-mainstream freaks to break into the public eye.

All of a sudden, filmmakers like David Lynch, Tobe Hooper, and Paul Verhoeven could make big hits, and Tim Burton could be embraced by the public at large. Burton, in particular, could not have risen to fame in any other epoch.

Why Andy Serkis Best Motion Capture Performance Wasnt Gollum
Image
Peter Jacksons Lord of the Rings trilogy is the de facto adaptation of Tolkiens fantasy epic. It packed everything that made the series great into a three-film adventure. The films sweeping visuals and wholeheartedly committed cast breathed fresh energy into the worlds most beloved fantasy adventure, and some of the best performances came from people who never physically appeared in the films. Of all the cast and crew, one of the most iconic actors to grace the big screen was and is Andrew Serkis, whose vocal and physical talents brought Gollum to life.

In many ways, Serkis is Gollum. His performance and portrayal became cinema legend, and although the designers and animators behind Gollums pale, lanky form are due just as much credit, Serkis gave their digital puppet life. However, while theres no denying the physical talent behind Serkis motion capture work in The Lord of the Rings, his decades-long career spans many roles,...

Planet of the Apes: All Movie Timelines Explained
Image
The Planet of the Apes franchise consists of four different continuities, including the original pentalogy, a 2001 remake, a reboot trilogy, and the 2024 film. The original timeline features a complex story where apes rule and humans are slaves, ending with a reveal that the planet is actually a post-apocalyptic Earth. The Caesar timeline begins with the escape of characters from Earth to the past, leading to an alternate history with Caesar leading an ape uprising for equality.

The complete Planet of the Apes timeline is actually made up of four separate continuities established over the course of the entire franchise. To date, the Planet of the Apes movie franchise spans over 55 years and includes the original pentalogy, a 2001 remake directed by Tim Burton, a reboot trilogy starring Andy Serkis as Caesar, and the 2024 film Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. 7 Movies That Are Basically Planet Of The Apes Ripoffs
Image
Planet of the Apes movies inspired a range of laughable rip-offs with painfully small budgets. Empire of the Apes is a substandard 2013 imitation with party store costumes and cringeworthy acting. Playmate of the Apes and Planet of the Erotic Ape are erotic parodies with creative character names.

Like any major film franchise, the Planet of the Apes movies have had their fair share of copycats, with several notable ripoffs coming and going over the years. The Planet of the Apes series began with Pierre Boulle's science fiction novel of the same name that was released in 1963, with the first famous film adaptation starring Charlton Heston coming out five years later. Throughout its long history, the Planet of the Apes movies have accumulated a number of blatant rip-offs of laughable quality.

What's interesting to note is the fact that the series has waxed and waned over the years as each...

Released in 2011, Rise of the Planet of the Apes successfully revived the dormant franchise. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth film in the series from producers Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who initially had plans for nine movies.

Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, the pair explained that the franchise's future depends on audience interest. "With Kingdom, we really feel like we set the foundation for at least two more movies with these characters. But we'll see. A lot of it depends on the audience's reaction, too," Jaffa said. "When you first came up with this idea [for] the Apes franchise way back, you saw nine movies," Silver added. "We thought, 'This is crazy ambitious.' But here we are. We're at four."

Every ‘Planet of the Apes’ Film Ranked, from the 1968 Original to ‘Kingdom’
Image
Has another sci-fi series ever explored the folly of intelligent thought as thoroughly, devastatingly, and colorfully as “The Planet of the Apes”? We here at IndieWire think not. With a now whopping 10 installments within the franchise and countless derivative work adding to the lore, “Planet of the Apes” stands in a league all its own and prides itself on an ability to constantly evolve (see what we did there?).

The concept for the series was first conceived in 1963 in French author Pierre Boulle’s novel “La Planète des singes,” which translates to “Planet of the Apes” or “Monkey Planet.” Sadly, American producer Arthur P. Jacobs chose to go with the former translation when making his film adaptation. Despite this, the 1968 Charlton Heston- starring original “Planet of the Apes” was a huge success, launching multiple sequels that deftly dive into moral and ethical conversations surrounding modern day issues of the...

Why Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes Wasn't the Hit It Shouldve Been
Image
Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes failed to capture the essence of the original series by lacking depth and commentary. The 2001 Planet of the Apes focused on visuals and action, missing the crucial sociopolitical parallels that made the franchise iconic. Rise of the Planet of the Apes succeeded by updating themes and creating nuanced perspectives, reviving the franchise successfully.

The Planet of the Apes movie series is one of the biggest and most successful sci-fi properties in history. Originally adapting a novel by Pierre Boulle, the series has gone on to grace the small screen, the silver screen and even comic books. The current reboot series is a major success in reviving the brand, with the new movie Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continuing this timeline. Before the films were rebooted, however, there was another attempt at re-imagining the classic premise.

The Planet of the Apes Movies Ranked From Worst to Best
Image
Who knew that French author Pierre Boulle’s slim, satirical 1963 novel, Le Planete des Singes, would lead to one of the most successful science fiction franchises of all time? Consisting of 10 films (to date), two TV series , comic books (including a magazine series from Marvel), toys, games, merchandise and more, Planet of the Apes remains one of the most enduring and unique sci-fi sagas in cinematic history.

The success of the original film, 1968’s Planet of the Apes, led studio 20th Century Fox (which finally made the movie after years of development and stalling) to launch a series of sequels. That wasn’t necessarily unheard of back then, but those sequels—which include Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970), Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971), Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973)—told one complete story, unlike anything done on film before.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Reaches Box Office Milestone for Franchise

The latest installment in the Planet of the Apes saga, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, debuts at the box office with an impressive start. Early previews have propelled the film to a solid $6.6 million, setting the stage for a potential #1 spot in its opening week. This preview total marks the highest for the entire franchise.

While Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes shows promise, surpassing the monumental $72 million opening of its predecessor, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes remains a lofty challenge. As summer kicks off, The Fall Guy is expected to trail closely behind Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. Despite topping the box office last week with a $28 million opening, The Fall Guy's reception was met with mixed reactions.

Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes Director Reveals The Studio's One Request For The Film [Exclusive Interview]

The majority of people currently alive today have never known a world without the "Planet of the Apes" franchise. French author Pierre Boulle first published his novel "La Planète des singes" in 1963, and the world has been fascinated with an alternate future where our own hubris have destroyed humans, and highly intelligent apes are now the dominant species on Earth. ‘Planet of the Apes’ Timeline Explained, From the 1968 Original to ‘Kingdom’
Image
For a writer, signing on to “Planet of the Apes” is less an assignment than a calling. After all, it’s the longest-running science-fiction series in film history. So when Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, the husband-and-wife screenwriting and producing team, conceived “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” in 2011, they envisioned more than a single-serving reboot. “We did see that if we played it right, there’d be at least three movies,” Jaffa tells Variety.

He wasn’t wrong: Their four-film stint culminates with “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the franchise’s 10th installment (and the first in a reported new trilogy). Their tenure follows that of Paul Dehn, who took over screenwriting duties from Rod Serling and Pierre Boulle for the 1970s “Planet of the Apes” sequels. “Kingdom” also echoes the series’ labyrinthine internal timeline, which elapses across a millennia of circular (and occasionally contradictory) storytelling.

‘Planet Of The Apes’ Trilogy Recap Before Watching ‘Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes’
Image
When it comes to movies, remaking acclaimed movies to suit modern sensibilities has more often than not resulted in dumpster fires. It is rare to have an old classic bested or even followed up by a worthy remake, let alone an entire movie series being topped by its reboot. Back in 2011, Fox Studios had managed to ace this seemingly impossible task by rebooting their 1970s Planet of the Apes pentalogy to create the new trilogy series. The strong political undertone of the Cold War era of the original movie series found its spiritual successor in themes of racial (species) discrimination, questions pertaining to animal rights, and criticism of human imperialism in the new trilogy series, which also justified the core message of Pierre Boulle’s novel of the same name that inspired the original series in the first place.

The rebooted Planet of the Apes trilogy peaked with the final...

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes Review: A Marvel, but Only in Moments of Somber Repose
Image
Picking up three centuries after War for the Planet of the Apes, the 2017 conclusion of Matt Reeves’s trilogy, Wes Ball’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes at long last brings the setting of the reboot franchise in line with Franklin J. Schaffner’s original Planet of the Apes. Here, the descendants of the first hyper-intelligent primates now rule the world and have established solid civilizations, while the nearly extinct human species has turned feral.

With humans reduced to a ragtag population of wild animals, conflict is now mostly evident between rival groups of apes. One such collision occurs at the start of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, with one clan overrun and pressed into servitude by Proximus Caesar (Kevin Durand), an ambitious bonobo styling himself as the first king of apes. Only one member of the smaller group, the young chimpanzee Noa (Owen Teague), eludes death or capture,...

Presales stateside of around $3.1M, in line with what was the 3-day of Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning ($54.6M), indicate a $50M-plus debut. That start in U.S./Canada isn’t far from the $56.2M opening of Matt Reeves’ 2017 movie, War of the Planet of the Apes, and that would be considered solid. Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ has the advantage that it’s opening at a time with less competition than War of the Planet of the Apes.

Take Our Bananas Planet of the Apes Quiz!

Ever since Charlton Heston climbed out of a little rocket ship in the toxic waters of the Forbidden Zone, science fiction has never been the same. The film in which he starred was based on a Pierre Boulle novel, but by the time it reached the big screen, it felt like an epic cinematic version of The Twilight Zone (and it had the Rod Serling writing credit to prove it).

The ending of the film is still one of the all-time great “twists” in cinema history, birthing the first modern science fiction franchise. And it’s never let up since. When Wes Ball’s latest installment in this upside down universe, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, hits big screens this coming weekend, the series will have seen nearly a dozen films released over the span of about 60 years. Some have been good, some have been bad, but almost...

5 Best Planet of the Apes Movies You Need to Watch Before Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes
Image
Grossing over $2 billion worldwide since its inception in 1968, the Planet of the Apes franchise has turned out to be one of the most successful ones in Hollywood. Based on French author Pierre Boulle’s 1963 novel La Planète des singes, the title has released a total of nine movies, expanding its lore, with a tenth one, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes starring The Witcher actress Freya Allan in a leading role and set some 300 years after the events of the last outing.

A rough outline of all the movies involves humans, intelligent apes, and some sort of conflict. However, the dystopian setting where mankind comes down on its knees to face a brutal twist of fate sets the narrative in different orders for the different iterations. Someone who has just embarked on watching, or one who wishes to refresh their memory of the events of the films, need not watch all nine of them.

Planet Of The Apes: Why Humans Can't Talk
Image
The original 1968 Planet of the Apes, based on the book by author Pierre Boulle, depicted a post-apocalyptic Earth where apes and humans lived inverted roles. But in both the book and the film, there's never been an explanation for humans not being able to speak, and the franchise — which eventually spawned five films — never really explored the question.

However, the rebooted Apes trilogy — Rise, Dawn, and War for The Planet of the Apes —\ crafted an explanation for the phenomenon. In the films, the "simian flu" that rapidly spreads around the globe eventually affects the humans' vocal cords to the point they are unable to talk. It eventually affects their higher intellect as well: rendering them little more than animals by the end of the final film. It puts an end to a good deal of speculation around the question, which none of the previous incarnations of the story properly addressed.

The ‘Planet of the Apes’ Book Is Wildly Different From the 1968 Movie
Image
The upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is the fourth entry in the reboot series, taking place 300 years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes. The first of the reboot series, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, came a mere 10 years after Tim Burton's much-maligned remake, which came 33 years after the original 1968 Planet of the Apes. That's a whole lotta monkey movies. It's a franchise that is utterly captivating, one that still resonates a full 56 years later, 61 if you count the 1963 novel the original film is based on. Yes, before Charlton Heston demanded that a damn, dirty ape get his hands off of him, Pierre Boulle introduced the idea in La Planete des singes, aka Monkey Planet in the UK and Planet of the Apes in the U.S. He may have introduced the idea, but the film? Well, that has its own ideas.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes on Track for One of the Franchise's Best Opening Weekends
Image
Despite the last Planet of the Apes movie hitting theaters seven years ago, public demand for the beloved sci-fi franchise remains at an all-time high. The franchise's latest entry, the upcoming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, is currently on track for a massive opening weekend at the domestic box office this May.

According to the tracking service Quorum (via Deadline), which reports on six-weeks-in-advance box office projections, 20th Century Studios' Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is looking to debut with between $54 million and $61 million over the May 10-12 weekend. If Kingdom comes in on the higher end of its box office projections, it would mark the third-best opening weekend for the Planet of the Apes franchise and second-best for 20th Century's reboot series. The 2014 movie, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, is currently number one with an opening weekend of $72.6M, followed by Tim Burton...

'Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes' — Everything We Know So Far
Image
The 1968 film adaptation of Pierre Boulle's 1963 book La Planète des singes (also known as Planet of the Apes or Monkey Planet) was a critical and economic triumph, and it sparked a wave of follow-ups and spinoffs. After six films in the Planet of the Apes series from 1968 to 2001, a reboot series was announced that reimagined the tale of the chimpanzee Caesar. Rise of the Planet of the Apes, the first installment in the reboot series, was released in 2011. The film was followed by Dawn of the Planet of the Apes and War for the Planet of the Apes.

DC's Planet of the Apes 'Rip-Off' Actually Came First (So Hurry Up and Make a Movie)
Image
DC's Kamandi, created by Jack Kirby, explores animal civilizations after a disaster, offering a fresh perspective on post-apocalyptic storytelling. Kirby's concept actually predates Planet of the Apes, with a rich world that includes allegorical societies beyond just apes. Kamandi's potential for film adaptation is enormous, offering a unique take on a post-apocalyptic world that is ready for a renaissance.

Following the success of 1968's Planet of the Apes movie, Marvel and DC Comics fought over the rights to publish comics based on the film. When the latter lost, the legendary Jack Kirby was commissioned by DC editorial to create his own version. Despite it being labeled a rip-off, Kirby actually got there first.

In 1963, Pierre Boulle published his original The Planet of the Apes novel. Soon after, Charlton Heston headlined the blockbuster adaptation, which became one of the decade's most influential and iconic films. Considering this success, it was...
