The best George Miller movies are mostly known as the Mad Max films. However, the Australian filmmaker has also had success with family films, a biographical drama, and several dark fantasies. In recent years, Miller has become more prolific, helming Three Thousand Years of Longing while directing more movies in his Mad Max franchise, including Fury Road and the 2024 release Furiosa. Miller’s first work as a director was the short film Violence in Cinema: Part 1, which was met with mixed responses from critics and audiences when released in 1971.
The film examined elements of cinematic violence, which Miller then used in his feature directorial debut, Mad Max. Although he has since proved capable of making successful films in various genres, the dystopian action movie released at the end of the 1970s established Miller as a filmmaker confidently able to orchestrate narratives of awe-inspiring spectacle. Taye Diggs got his start in the professional performing arts world on stage, not on screen. He had a successful Broadway career with roles in Carousel and Rent before he appeared in his first TV roles in 1996. He has become such a prolific film and TV actor since then that many might forget that hes a song and dance man first.
Diggs first big screen break was with the romance How Stella Got Her Groove Back in 1998. Hes been nonstop as an actor and writer ever since. In fact, in addition to all his work on screen, Diggs has also written four childrens books and founded a dance company. With all of his creative talent, its no wonder that he has worked on so many great movies and TV shows.

The script originally explored deep themes of religion and myth, with elders praying for plentiful fishing seasons and exiling those who went against their ways. Warner Bros. pushed for a more kid-friendly version of Happy Feet, toning down the dark elements to appeal explicitly to children and ensure commercial success.

Eddie Murphy returns with his big, goofy smile in the new trailer for the family Christmas comedy Candy Cane Lane from Prime Video. Murphy is reunited with director Reginald Hudlin, who directed him in the 1992 comedy Boomerang. While Boomerang was a very adult-oriented film, this new film jumps over to the other side of the spectrum with a family-friendly tone. While earlier images and trailers showcased more of a Christmas decoration-type comedy, the new footage reveals an adventure aspect as Jillian Bell, who plays the magical elf, Pepper, shows to be more trouble than previously thought.

Eddie Murphy has spent much of the last 27 years making kid-friendly flicks like “Imagine That” and “Daddy Daycare.” As such, it’s a little surprising that “Candy Cane Lane” represents his first Christmas/holiday flick. That’s the hook for this latest Amazon Prime original feature.
This brief teaser doesn’t so much explain the premise as lays out the protagonist, showing Murphy as a loving husband and father who nonetheless takes the concept of Christmas decorations a bit too far. He essentially sells his soul to a magical elf played by Jillian Bell for a holiday-related wish. Alas, much to his family’s chagrin, that wish is not world peace or a new album from Drake.
Murphy’s wish causes a spell that brings the 12 Days of Christmas to life, unleashing PG-rated chaos on the town. One can surmise that all parties learn that Christmas is not about winning...

Murphy would appear in Netflix’s You People, and he’s got a new sequel to one of his most beloved films on the way with the upcoming Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. The rage currently aimed at police violence and systemic racism is centuries in the making. And in order to understand and meaningfully contribute to the movement, non-Black audiences have become increasingly interested in educating themselves on the racist and socioeconomic inequities that nurture the environment that allows these injustices to thrive. Black content creators, however, place more value in humanizing Black people over providing an education to those seeking one, as if to say that despite differences in skin color “we’re not all that different from each other.”
That is not to say that the below series don’t tackle the subject of race and identity; some do directly. There are real-life differences of habit and racial perspective. But most of them operate inside the conversation that emphasizes the universality of Black stories — humor, love, family, conflict, and every other kind of experience.

"There's some rumors about you..." Screen Media Films has debuted the first official trailer for an indie thriller titled Josie, starring Sophie Turner (as seen in Barely Lethal, X-Men: Apocalypse, and on "Game of Thrones") as the titular character Josie. The film's plot is actually focused on a mysterious man named Hank, played by Dylan McDermott, who keeps a close eye on her. Josie stirs things up when she arrives in a Southern town called Huntsville, and Hank takes a liking to her, attempting to protect her from a boy she's been spending time with. The film's full cast includes Jack Kilmer, Daeg Faerch, Kurt Fuller, Robin Bartlett, Lombardo Boyar, and George Todd McLachlan. Yeah, this looks like a totally compelling Southern thriller, with a strong lead performance by Turner, who also plays Phoenix in the X-Men movies. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Eric England's Josie, direct...

Disney Pixar has released the third trailer for Coco, which sheds some new light on the main character Miguel (voiced by Anthony Gonzalez), and his quest through the Land of the Dead. The trailer features a clerk (voiced by Gabriel Iglesias) at the Department of Family Reunions, who tells Miguel that he's cursed. To return to the Land of the Living, Miguel will need a magical marigold petal and the blessing of a family member, but, according to the clerk, the family member can include any condition she likes, even forbidding music forever. Miguel learns that he must also preserve the memory of his great great grandfather.
The trailer, which debuted on Disney Pixar YouTube, shows footage of Miguel learning from Land of the Dead trickster Miguel (voiced by Gael Garcia Bernal) that once everyone in the living world has forgotten about a person, they completely disappear from the Land of the Dead.

Diversity is kind of a hot topic nowadays. As citizens of a melting pot of a culture, it’s nice to be represented in mainstream entertainment. And if we’re being honest, it’s not just about diversity, but authenticity. It always rings a bit false when you have a white person portraying a person of color. It’s especially easy to get away with this in animation, where you don’t even see the voice actors.
Studios have gotten away with this practice for years, but in today’s world, they’re making a conscious effort to create films that respect the culture it’s portraying, and part of that has to do with the voice cast. This newer approach is expanding to Coco, the latest film from Pixar inspired by Día de Muertos, a celebration of the dearly departed.

The 40th Annual Saturn Awards were held this past Thursday, June 26th, and a what great show it was from (as Johnny Carson used to say) "beautiful downtown Burbank"! Here's the full list of winners and more.
Actually, we were high above the city at the famous Castaway restaurant and banquet hall. The Saturn Awards has been held here for the past few years, and it really is a fabulous venue with the best views of the San Fernando Valley anywhere.
Among the winners are Dread Central favorites "The Walking Dead," "Hannibal," The Conjuring, and Vera Farmiga's no holds barred performance as Norma Bates in "Bates Motel." The eye candy and updates from the carpet come from director Neil Marshall; the Curse of Chucky crew - Don Mancini, Brad Dourif, and Fiona Dourif; Insidious 3's Lin Shaye; and more. There's even some Ghostbusters 3 non-news!

Although my three days as a glorified extra on the set of Big Ass Spider! were indeed grueling and it turns out I'm onscreen for just a blink-and-you'll-miss-it blip, it was fun. I just love being on set. Not only that, on Big Ass Spider! I was among friends.
My roommates were also extras (Andrew Kasch is Cocoon Victim #1 – below is a picture of us, snapped by Buz Wallick… not to mention Andrew’s cat, Frodo, getting more screen time than either of us).
I'd met the hero of whole shebang, Greg Grunberg, a number of times from the interview circuit when I worked for the Syfy Channel and covered "Heroes" endlessly. I made a new Bff in Lombardo Boyar, who is, in the film, my savior. So, in spite of driving the dreaded 405 freeway home each evening in peak traffic, covered in syrup and caked with dirt, every day was pure fun.
