24 Years Later, This Underrated War Drama Remains One of the Best WWI Films Ever
Image
There’s something grossly alluring about the grime and gore of World War I. The world’s first massively mechanized battlefields killed around 40 million people and left countless more permanently changed. It brought forth massive innovations in both civilian and military technology while wholesale destroying immense swathes of critical farmland. Yet, driven by an innate sense of morbid curiosity, audiences still clamor for World War I films.

People crave the inherent pathos of the so-called “War to End All Wars,” and immersion reigns supreme. It’s certainly not as popular as World War II in cinemas, but the former Great War still commands attention. Its brutality is its appeal, and its films epitomise a widespread fascination with mortality and pain. While many of the war’s most acclaimed cinematic spawns cling to heart-stopping sound design and relentless violence, one stands out for its surprising and seemingly impossible restraint.

Kate Beckinsale's 2024 spy movie is a streaming success despite its 30% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. During the early 2000s, Beckinsale starred in films from a variety of genres, including Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor, the romantic comedy Serendipity, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator, and Click.

However, since taking on the role of Selene in the Underworld franchise from 2003 to 2016, Kate Beckinsale has become best known for action movies, also including Van Helsing, Whiteout, Contraband, Total Recall, and Jolt. She's also received some critical acclaim for her performances in smaller dramas such as Snow Angels, Nothing but the Truth, Everybody's Fine, Love & Friendship,...

Canary Black Cast & Character Guide
Image
Apart from walking through several action set pieces and a thrilling drama, Canary Black also features memorable character beats driven by the compelling performances of its cast members. Directed by Pierre Morel, Canary Black is another addition to Amazon Prime Video's roster of action movies. Although its title might suggest it has something to do with DC Comics' Black Canary, the film follows an original story that focuses on a CIA agent on the run.

Canary Black's filming primarily took place in Zagreb, Croatia, and even the scenes that portray Tokyo in the movie's storyline were shot in the Croatian city of Rovinj. When it comes to the movie's cast, it features both familiar and new faces as its leads. Since many viewers may be curious about who plays whom in Canary Black's story after watching it on Prime Video, it is worth breaking down the key characters and the talented actors behind them.

‘Renegades’ Review

Stars: Lee Majors, Louis Mandylor, Patsy Kensit, Nick Moran, Ian Ogilvy, Billy Murray, Paul Barber, Danny Trejo, Michael Paré, Stephanie Beacham, Michael Brandon, Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Daniel Zirilli

Renegades is one of those movies that on paper has all the makings of a solid direct to DVD hit. A sizeable cast of mid-tier names that you will not only know but also have a sort of nostalgic endearment toward and that’s a great thing for you guys because they do a huge service in elevating the material and hiding any problems. A story that while not exactly breaking any new ground is just this side of madcap shenanigans so that there’s a slight air of believability to its proceedings. We are talking London gangsters, low budgets and a cast and crew that doesn’t just believe in the project but are doing...

‘Renegades’ VOD Review

Stars: Lee Majors, Louis Mandylor, Patsy Kensit, Nick Moran, Ian Ogilvy, Billy Murray, Paul Barber, Danny Trejo, Michael Paré, Stephanie Beacham, Michael Brandon, Tommy ‘Tiny’ Lister | Written by Tom Jolliffe | Directed by Daniel Zirilli

Renegades, not to be confused with the 2017 action film of the same name, starts on a familiar enough note as retired Green Beret Major Carver getting on the wrong side of mob boss Goram. It seems Carver’s daughter Judy is a local politician and has been leading a clean up the streets campaign and making complaints about Goram’s activities. When Goram had his goons threaten her Carver got involved. And ends up beaten to death for his troubles.

When her father’s military buddies Burton, Peck, Woody, and Harris hear about it they know what needs to be done. These old soldiers are about to fight a new war on the streets of London.

Peter Strickland Introduces His Film "Blank Narcissus (Passion of the Swamp)"
Image
Peter Strickland's Blank Narcissus (Passion of the Swamp) is now showing exclusively on Mubi in most countries starting December 7, 2022, in the series Brief Encounters. The DVD commentary is already becoming an antiquated supplement to home entertainment with the dominance of streaming, but during its brief few decades, the revelations and confessions from directors along with assorted colleagues unlocked a hitherto closed world for the majority of viewers. The director’s commentary not only functioned as a nuts-and-bolts technical and thematic dissection of what was on the screen, but more revealingly, it veered into the confessional. A lot of commentaries, especially when it comes to reissues/restorations, are recorded many years after filming, and directors no longer have to be in promotion mode, which usually involves pretending everyone got along and everything went perfectly. With the safety buffer of a few decades, mistakes that were made in any given film...

It Came From The Tube: Deadly Messages (1985)
TV didn’t always upend the horror formula; but when they would add a couple of different colors to the mix, the result was usually at least interesting. Such is the case with Deadly Messages (1985), which throws the whole palette at the screen for a very messy, but entertaining distraction.

Originally broadcast February 21st as part of The ABC Thursday Night Movie, the telefilm could not have picked a worse night to premiere: in addition to CBS’ solid lineup of Magnum, P.I. and Simon & Simon, NBC had the biggest block on the air – The Cosby Show/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court. Oh well. For the six other people not watching that, they were left with a goofy and breezy murder mystery come Ouija board spookfest.

Let’s pull apart our sun kissed faux TV Guide and see what the spirits have to say:

Thor: Ragnarok’s Jeff Goldblum Was Originally Eyed For Captain America
Before he was cast as Sakaar’s gleefully eccentric Grandmaster, Jeff Goldblum was approached about a totally different role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In anticipation of Thor: Ragnarok hitting theaters, Uproxx caught up with Marvel boss Kevin Feige, who reflected on Goldblum’s first foray into the bustling world of superhero movies. But had things panned out differently, ol’ Jeff Goldblum would have been drafted into the McU long before the God of Thunder touched down on Sakaar; in fact, the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom star came close to playing Senator Brandt in Captain America: The First Avenger.

If that name sounds familiar, it should; Brandt was the one responsible for recruiting the young Steve Rogers in the first place, and later transformed Chris Evans’ character into the star-spangled hero we know and love. Michael Brandon wound up landing the role in 2011, and it’s fair to say that...

Four Flies on Grey Velvet Explores the 'Why' in Murder
Dario Argento in Dracula 3D (2012)
Four Flies on Grey Velvet, the third and best film in horror maestro Dario Argento's thematically united "Animal Trilogy," stands apart from other lurid "gialli" murder mysteries in that it's not a whodunit, but a why-happened-it. In the second scene, prog-rock drummer Roberto (Michael Brandon) accidentally kills Carlo (character actor Calisto Calisti), a mustachioed, trench-coat-clad stranger. Roberto then seeks answers from a masked blackmailer who witnessed, photographed, and maybe even orchestrated Roberto's crime. Roberto, tellingly, doesn't look for proof of his innocence, but rather context for his actions. Four Flies is stylistically characteristic of the gialli screening alongside it at "The Killer Must Kill Again," Anthology Film Archives' secon...

Buried in a recent report at Variety about Billy Crystal joining the Jim Henson Company's production of a movie called Which Witch? is an even more awesomely interesting piece of news.

At the end of the article they list several movies they are currently working on, and those include Fraggle Rock; a sequel to 1982’s The Dark Crystal; a movie based on the Emmet Otter character, and a sequel to 1986’s Labyrinth. This is the first time I've heard about a Labyrinth sequel. There were no other details revealed, but it's exciting to know that it's in the works.

As for the project that Crystal will be working on, it's based on a 1979 book by Eva Ibbotson, the story of which follows a wizard who holds a contest among the seven witches to determine which witch one he will marry. The actor said,

"When Brian Henson called me about it,...

Michael Brandon
This story first appeared in the Oct. 3 issue of The Hollywood Reporter magazine. Michael Feldman's cluttered Washington office looks like a Hollywood executive's crash pad, complete with power ties and white shirts draped over a hat rack and movie posters lining the walls. It's actually the base from which Feldman, founding partner of the 150-employee, four-office communications consulting firm The Glover Park Group, has carved out a unique niche giving studios and filmmakers marketing advice for topical and controversial movies and TV shows. He has worked behind the scenes promoting such hot-button projects as Noah, Captain

Episodes wraps season 3: Has Matt LeBlanc comedy run out of steam?
Pucks ain't dead yet - the third season of Episodes drew to a close on BBC Two tonight with network head Elliot Salad (Michael Brandon) ordering six more episodes of the limp sitcom, solely to torpedo Matt LeBlanc's chances of landing a hot new NBC pilot.

The whole thing probably felt painfully familiar for Pierce Brosnan - but how did you feel about the Episodes finale and the third season overall?

More than ever before, the show seems to divide opinion. Is it a comedy-drama? Or a sitcom that's simply light on laughs? Is watching LeBlanc poke fun at himself as entertaining as ever - or has the joke worn thin?

BBC Two and Us co-producers Showtime seem satisfied, having ordered a fourth season of Episodes - co-starring Stephen Mangan and Tamsin Greig - but will you be tuning in?

Mangan expects to still be making Episodes "well into...

That's when the DJ hit "play" on a recording of the NBC News "Special Report" music,...

Johansson said, ”I think it’s irresponsible to take a bunch of actors that will have a Google alert on and to suddenly throw their name into a situation that none of us could possibly knowingly comment on. That just feels irresponsible to me.” She then denied knowing of any Woody Allen backlash. [Guardian] Today‘s Savannah Guthrie got married Saturday to Michael Feldman and announced after the ceremony that she is four months pregnant with her first child. Wedding guests were asked to keep the wedding and pregnancy a secret until Guthrie could announce it...
