The X-Files star David Duchovny needed to call out a massive Mulder plot hole in The X-Files season 1. The mystery series, created by Chris Carter, has developed a loyal following since debuting. Originally airing for nine seasons and releasing multiple feature films, The X-Files was revived from 2016 to 2018.
The show is centered on FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully who investigate various supernatural phenomena and investigations. Along with Duchovny and Anderson, The X-Files cast includes Mitch Pileggi, William B. Davis, Tom Braidwood, and more.
During an episode of Fail Betterwith David Duchovny (via Entertainment Weekly), the actor discussed one plot hole he had to call out on The X-Files. There is a season 1 episode where Mulder admits to being afraid of fire. The X-Files is celebrating its 32nd anniversary in 2025, having originally premiered on Sept. 10, 1993.
Over the past three decades, Fox's Emmy-winning sci-fi series has remained relevant thanks to its initial nine-season run from 1993 to 2002, two big-screen movies in 1998 and 2008, two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, and an in-progress diverse reboot from filmmaker Ryan Coogler. Not to mention, series stars David Duchovny (as FBI Special Agent Fox Mulder) and Gillian Anderson (as FBI Special Agent Dana Scully) make headlines every time they talk about their sometimes-rocky relationship behind the scenes.
All told, a whopping 218 episodes were produced for television — think of all those discarded cigarette butts! In Gold Derby's photo gallery below, we rank the 32 best episodes in honor of the 32nd anniversary. Do you agree with our No. 1 choice?

Richard Langley (Dean Haglund), Melvin Frohike (Tom Braidwood), and John Fitzgerald Byers (Bruce Harwood) -- collectively known as the Lone Gunmen -- first appeared in the episode of "The X-Files" called "E.B.E.". They were a trio of very, very intense nerds who spent their days looking into conspiracy theories, often finding (specious) evidence for their existence. Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) also investigated conspiracies, and would occasionally turn to the Lone Gunmen to give his investigations credibility. The Gunmen, however, were comic relief characters, presented as an over-the-top counterpart to Mulder. No matter how wild Mulder got with his talk of aliens, monsters, and government cover-ups, the Gunmen outstripped him in paranoia and conspiratorial hypotheses.
The Gunmen appeared in 40 episodes of "The X-Files" overall (including in the weird latter-day revival seasons), and many fans loved them. They were a whimsical warning of what Fox Mulder might become, if he...

In the "The X-Files" episode "First Person Shooter", Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) are called to investigate a seemingly fatal virtual reality video game. The players of the game, uncreatively called "First Person Shooter," have been encountering a sexy assassin named Maitreya (B-movie luminary Krista Allen) whom no one programmed into the game. When Maitreya kills someone in the game, they die in real life. No one knows how that's possible.
Mulder and Scully eventually find a woman in the real world who looks just like Maitreya, but she reveals that she is an exotic dancer named (sigh) Jade Blue Afterglow, and that she was merely hired by a computer company to scan her likeness. Viewers discovering Homicide: Life on the Street, now streaming on Peacock, will note Det. John Munch’s (Richard Belzer) penchant for conspiracy theories. This may not have always been the case. The Baltimore murder cop may have gotten the bug while on duty at The X-Files for season 5’s “Unusual Suspects.” The flashback episode to the creation of the Lone Gunmen supplies origin stories to much of the science fiction series’ canon, including how Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) was initially infected with his unique brand of governmental paranoia.

While, Hulu is not as flashy as some of the other streaming services like Netflix, Max, and Disney+, it has a solid library of shows that are both originals and licensed through various studios. Regarding sci-fi shows, Hulu doesn’t have any big names like 3 Body Problem or Westworld, but it makes up for that by carrying some great new and old shows like Devs and The X-Files, which were loved by millions of people. So, we thought of making a list of the best sci-fi TV shows you can find on Hulu right now.

A song featured in a 1998 episode of The X-Files has finally been identified due to a viral social media post. The song is "Staring at the Stars" by Dan Marfisi and Glenn Jordan, which was written specifically for a scene in the show. The fascination with the song speaks to The X-Files enduring popularity, with the show remaining popular due to its dark and grounded approach to mysterious subject matter.
One mystery in The X-Files has now finally been solved after remaining elusive for more than two decades. First airing in 1993, the hit show, which is created by Chris Carter, follows FBI agents Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) as they investigate unsolved paranormal cases. The show features many mysteries throughout its nine seasons and two revivals, but one that has long eluded viewers involves a song that plays during a bar scene in season 6, episode 5, "Dreamland II," which aired in 1998.

TV drama writers obsess over audience engagement, with a huge emphasis on personal stakes for their characters. The biggest of these is the prospect of death. But 70+ years of TV have taught us that mortality is rare for characters played by a show's stars. So, when actors leave a show or the decision is made to cut a character, writers see a golden opportunity to play the ultimate stakes game by going terminal.
It's safe to say character departures always upset a segment of a show's audience, however small. But not all such deaths are created equal. Some generate a wave of complaints, others a tsunami of outrage. It's the deaths of characters we love or love to hate, and those especially shocking or egregious, that drive fans to write all-caps messages, accompanied by many exclamation points, in fanzines, letter columns, and social media.
Here are 14 of the most controversial of the controversial.

In gearing up for today’s 30th anniversary of “The X-Files” premiere, which debuted back on September 10, 1993, I recently re-watched the series finale, titled “The Truth.” Yes, I know Fox’s sci-fi show later spawned two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, but I’m still calling this episode, which aired on May 19, 2002, the official series finale. When “The Truth” originally aired, fans and critics alike were decidedly mixed on the two-part ender written and directed by series creator Chris Carter. But 21 years later, I can safely say that it’s better than you remember.

Brace yourselves, “The X-Files” fans: your favorite TV show is turning 30 years old. Yep, it’s true. Fox’s Emmy-winning sci-fi juggernaut that followed FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) in their investigations into the paranormal debuted on September 10, 1993. Nine complete seasons aired until the series finale on May 19, 2002, with two movies premiering at the box office in 1998 and 2008, and then two additional revival seasons dropping in 2016 and 2018. As many of you Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fans know, before Vince Gilligan became a demi-God of modern television in the late aughts, he was learning the ropes under the hands of Chris Carter, the father of The X-Files. Gilligan wrote or co-wrote 30 episodes of the classic sci-fi series, which undoubtedly played a key part in his success many years later. Carter gave Gilligan enough creative freedom that allowed him to play out the full scope of his ideas ranging from suspenseful to touchingly dramatic to campy and downright hilarious. As a result, he’s written some of the most gripping and beloved episodes in the show’s history.
Gilligan had great talent to begin with, but it was the versatility of The X-Files that permitted his creativity to flourish in numerous ways. Now, we’re here to highlight some of the finest work he’s done for the series through nine seasons.

Given the numerous, complicated mythology arcs introduced throughout its initial nine-season run, it's surprising that more shows didn't spin off of Chris Carter's 1993 hit show "The X-Files." For the uninitiated, "The X-Files" was about a pair of FBI agents named Mulder (David Duchovny) and Scully (Gillian Anderson) who were assigned to the Bureau's most unusual cases, often filed under the letter X. The unusual cases often involved alien abductions, man-sized liver flukes, psychics, shape-shifters, psychic photography, and other such paranormal monkeyshines. Much of the show sprung from a sense of paranoia aimed at the United States government and its tendency to hush up the mind-blowing, supernatural truth about the world. Only a believer like Mulder and a skeptic like Scully would have the intelligence and the wherewithal to find the truth.
"The X-Files" did have two spinoffs. The 1996 series "Millennium," about a forensic profiler (Lance Henricksen) investigating some quite immediate end-of-the-world lore,...

Arguably the most legendary TV show theme song of the ’90s — and possibly of all-time — belongs to “The X-Files.” Now, the cast and crew of the famed series has reunited to give that theme song some lyrics.
The new video, titled “Song in the Key of X,” sees show creator Chris Carter join the show’s stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson along with dozens of cast members, writers and directors in an a capella version of the theme.
Among those in the video are “Breaking Bad” creator Vince Gilligan, who wrote several “X-Files” episodes; Carey Elwes, who appeared on the show’s final season; Mulder’s replacement Robert Patrick; and Lone Gunmen Bruce Harwood, Tom Braidwood and Dean Haglund. Frank Spotnitz, the show’s executive producer, oversaw the reunion project.

The X-Files event series is airing it's penultimate episode this Monday, titled Babylon, and with it comes the return of some highly anticipated characters. That's right, after a long absence, The Lone Gunmen are back! And we have your first look courtesy of EW.
The Lone Gunmen team is made up of Byers, Langly, and Frohike. They are a trio of conspiracy nuts who became extremely popular during the original run of the show, which ended on Fox way back in 2002. These guys were such fan-favorites that they got their own short-lived spinoff series titled The Lone Gunmen in 2001. The show only lasted 13 episodes, and has since been released on DVD.
But that wasn't the last we'd see of these guys. The trio later returned to the original The X-Files series for Season 9. And guess what? They died. So how is it possible that they've been resurrected for one of...

One week ago today, Fox debuted its highly-anticipated The X-Files with the first episode in this six-episode event series, before it settled into its new time slot on Monday nights at 8 Pm. Two of the new characters we haven't met quite yet are Robbie Amell's Agent Miller and Lauren Ambrose's Agent Einstein, who will debut in the fifth episode Babylon, airing on February 15. Today, Entertainment Weekly has the first photo of these new characters before they arrive on the hit show.
The Babylon episode centers on Mulder and Scully who attempt to communicate with the comatose bomber of an art gallery. The younger FBI agents push them to examine their own beliefs. We reported in November that an X-Files spinoff may be happening that focuses on Agent Miller and Agent Einstein, but that news was never confirmed by Fox. If these characters prove to be popular with fans when they debut next month,...

[Originally appeared in Deadly Magazine #5] In 1993, The X-Files premiered on Fox, forever changing genre television, and after 20 years, its influence is still felt. No series since The X-Files has even come close to creating such incredibly nuanced and compelling storytelling than what Chris Carter’s series delivered each week for nine seasons.
What made The X-Files so remarkable was that it hit the ground running from its first episode and maintained that momentum. While Seasons 8 and 9 aren’t remembered fondly by fans, I’d argue that the storytelling still remained strong until the series finale in May 2002.
Known generally for its overarching alien and governmental conspiracy plots, The X-Files always managed to find clever and unusual ways to celebrate so many horror and sci-fi tropes, much like its predecessors (The Twilight Zone and Kolchak: The Night Stalker influenced Carter when he was first conceiving the series in the early ’90’s.)

[Originally appeared in Deadly Magazine #5] For nine seasons (and two feature films), fans of The X-Files became engrossed with FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully’s search for the truth and along the way, we were introduced to numerous supporting characters that helped them (or did their damnedest to foil their efforts) along the way. Here’s a look back at some of The X-Files’ greatest unusual suspects.
Deep Throat (Jerry Hardin)
Mulder’s first informant when the X-Files division of the FBI was established. A member of The Syndicate who wanted to expose some of the secrets the government had tried desperately to keep hidden, Deep Throat was tragically gunned down while trading an alien embryo for Mulder’s life in the first season finale, “The Erlenmeyer Flask.”

In just eight short days, the highly-anticipated X-Files event series will debut on Sunday, January 24, directly following the Nfc Championship Game. The series brings back the beloved characters Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) back together, 13 years after the original series came to a close. Series creator Chris Carter recently appeared at the TCA winter tour, where he teased that the sixth and final episode ends with a "big cliffhanger," hinting that there may be more episodes.
David Duchovny teased in May that he would be open to coming back for more episodes, provided that Fox didn't order a full 20-episode season. Fox hasn't given the green light for another season yet, but if fans respond to this new series, it's certainly possible. Chris Carter also teased that he is also considering making a third The X-Files movie following 1998's The X-Files and 2008's The X-Files: I Want to Believe.

What goes together better than paranormal drama and football? Fox is bringing back the iconic sci-fi series The X-Files in just over a week, with this six-episode event series debuting Sunday, January 24, directly following the Nfc Championship game. During the network's TCA winter tour panel earlier today, Fox showcased a sizzle reel, which features new footage of a UFO crash, an alien running through a field, and a shot that teases the return of another character from the original series.
The footage features a shot of a character speaking on the phone, telling the unknown caller that they have a "problem," since the X-Files have been reopened. While we don't see this mystery man's face, his unmistakable voice is a dead giveaway that this is the Cigarette Smoking Man (William B. Davis). Directly after this brief scene, we also see a quick shot of a deformed man, who very well...
