All 4 Fear Street Movies, Ranked from Worst to Best
Image
R.L. Stine has always held a special place in the hearts of all those who have grown up reading his horror stories, right from the “Goosebumps” novels to the “Fear Street” series. Naturally, one finds their attention piqued upon the release of the latest slasher genre “Fear Street” instalment, “Fear Street: Prom Queen” (2025). The genre of horror has seen many developments in recent years, thanks to improved CGI technology. However, the real thrill lies in tricks from the old playbook of horror that play mind games with the psychology of the audience in the form of anticipation.

Slasher horror films came into being with two cinematic gems from 1960, the first being Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho” and the second being Michael Powell’s “Peeping Tom.” Since then, it has undergone an evolution in terms of how it is made. But what still remains at the core of this horror subgenre is the clever pacing,...

Kiana Madeira, Lloyd Pitts, and Noah Bain Garret in Fear Street: Part One - 1994 (2021)
Netflix’s Prom Queen Opens at 48%, Sparks Slasher Debate
Kiana Madeira, Lloyd Pitts, and Noah Bain Garret in Fear Street: Part One - 1994 (2021)
Netflix’s latest Fear Street entry opened to divided reviews, debuting with a 48% Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film, directed by Matt Palmer, premiered on Netflix on May 23, 2025. Based on R.L. Stine’s 1992 novel “The Prom Queen,” shifts away from the trilogy’s cursed Sarah Fier arc for a stand-alone slasher set in 1988 Shadyside.

Critics remain split over Prom Queen’s merits. FandomWire’s Joshua Ryan called it a “fittingly nostalgic return,” praising its homage to ’80s horror despite formulaic elements. Conversely, RogerEbert.com’s Clint Worthington dismissed it as “empty-headed, straightforward slasher schlock”, and SlashFilm’s Chris Evangelista labeled it a “gory misfire” lacking the inventive energy of its predecessors. Screenrant noted this Tomatometer debut marks the lowest for any Fear Street installment.

Cast interviews have added nuance to the reaction. In an exclusive with People, Fina Strazza contrasted her real-life Stem high school with the film’s...

MaXXXine Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
Warning! This article contains spoilers for Maxxxine.MaXXXine is the perfect entry in Ti West's X trilogy to include several popular songs, and the film makes great use of music throughout. Ti West is the hands-on creative behind the X movie trilogy, which began with X in 2022, followed by Pearl later that year, and 2024's MaXXXine. Each film features Mia Goth as the protagonist, and she occasionally appears as multiple characters. Meanwhile, Ti West has taken on the role of director, writer, producer and editor, while bringing in Tyler Bates as the composer for each entry, along with some additional help along the way.

Considering the fairly tight-knit production, the films rely on every element performing at its best in order to deliver a satisfying final product. Fortunately, the music team has proven their capability and created critically acclaimed entries throughout the X series. MaXXXine also features some of...

‘Somebody Somewhere,’ Thank You for Being A Friend
Image
We’re in an era of entertainment maximalism. Superheroes with larger-than-life powers; cinematic universes with a dozen franchises or more; huge swings with even the unlikeliest IP: all are inescapable. So it’s nearly a miracle that Somebody Somewhere, which seems like an experiment in how small a story can be and still enthrall its audience, has lasted this long. With its third and final season, it ends as it began: portraying the vital necessity of true friendship, especially later in life.

In the first season, Sam (Bridget Everett) has relatively recently returned from New York City to her hometown of Manhattan, Kansas, for her sister Holly’s last days. As the series begins, Holly has died of cancer, and Sam is just trying to maintain baseline functionality. She doesn’t realize that Joel (Jeff Hiller), now her co-worker at her job reading college admission essays, knew her when they were both in high school,...

Will Jennings, Oscar-Winning ‘My Heart Will Go On’ Lyricist, Dead at 80
Image
Will Jennings, the two-time Oscar-winning lyricist who co-wrote Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” along with chart-topping hits by Eric Clapton, Steve Winwood, and Whitney Houston, has died at the age of 80.

Jennings’ caretaker confirmed the songwriter’s death to The Hollywood Reporter, adding that he died Friday at his home in Tyler, Texas. No cause of death was given, but Jennings had health issues in recent years.

Former J. Geils Band singer Peter Wolf, who collaborated with Jennings on a pair of solo albums, tweeted Saturday, “A sad time,...

‘Maxxxine’ trailer: Mia Goth and Ti West round out their ‘X’ trilogy with 1985-set slasher
Image
A24 released the trailer for “Maxxxine” early Monday, the third part of a genre trilogy from Mia Goth and director Ti West. Whereas “X” focused on a porno shoot in 1979 and “Pearl” took the action way back to 1918 (with Goth mugging with a frozen smile for insane lengths of time), “Maxxxine” is set in Los Angeles during its sleaze nadir of 1985, with Goth’s Maxine Minx ready to make the transition from adult entertainer to horror movie star. Alas, a serial killer (“The Night Stalker”) is on the loose, causing trouble.

Set to “My Obsession” by Animotion and “Self Control” by Laura Branigan, Maxxine and hear blown-out hairstyle zoom around L.A., meeting Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Halsey, Giancarlo Esposito, and Kevin Bacon along the way.

Even though “Maxxxine” looks like a splashy, fun ride with 1980s makeup, Debicki in an ascot, and some shots on VHS,...

‘Plandemic: The Musical’ Is an Awkward Victory Lap for Covid Conspiracists
Image
On Saturday night, in the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, Covid conspiracist filmmaker Mikki Willis debuted the fourth film in his Plandemic series to an audience of about 150 fans and fellow travelers. Then, before he and his cast and crew could get into a planned Q&a session, the audience was told it had about five minutes to clear out of the ballroom venue.

“I did not know that,” Willis said after confirming with event workers the screening space had to be empty by 8 p.m.

The Smiths’ Guitarist Johnny Marr Slams Trump For Using His Band’s Songs At Maga Rallies
Image
Johnny Marr, the former guitarist for the rock band The Smiths, slammed Donald Trump for using one of his band’s songs during his political rallies.

“As Trump is scheduled to take the stage in [Laconia, New Hampshire], the new addition to his pre-rally music is The Smiths,” the X user wrote.

On January 23, another user replied to this post with a clip from a Trump rally in Rapid City, South Dakota.

“You actually hear the Smiths more often than you’d think at 2024 Trump rallies,” the user wrote in her post’s caption.

The Smiths song “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want,” released in 1984, can be heard playing over the loudspeakers.

“Ahh…right…Ok,” Marr wrote on X in response to Kim’s post. “I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this s— shut right down right now.”

Sound And Vision: William Friedkin
Image
In the article series Sound and Vision we talk about music videos from notable directors. This week we look at Laura Branigan's Self Control, directed by William Friedkin. Last week director William Friedkin passed away. The luminary behind such classics as The Exorcist, The French Connection, To Live and Die in L.A, Sorcerer, Bug and Killer Joe is an extremely underrated director. But luckily most of the obituaries that were written seemed to focus on what made this sometimes hot-headed enfant terrible an amazing director, even though he wasn't always appreciated when alive. My favorite of the recent write-ups on Friedkins career was this piece by Kyle Turner for GQ, in which the critic focuses on how Friedkin approaches queer masculinity in The Boys in...

Somebody Somewhere: Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller Talk Hurt Feelings and Aftermath of Sam and Joel's Big Fallout
Image
When we hop on a Zoom with Bridget Everett and Jeff Hiller to break down Somebody Somewhere‘s sophomore season, of course Episode 5 is high on the agenda, so much so that it catches Everett slightly off guard. “Geez, Nick. Really unpacking things today!” she exclaims.

How can we not talk about Sam and Joel’s biggest rift yet, which spawned feelings of hurt and betrayal between buds. In Sunday’s episode, the resident besties’ friendship experiences its first major bump in the road when Joel finds a new boo (Tim Bagley’s Brad, aka “Sls”) and lies to Sam about it.

Unlikely BFFs Sam and Joel will be back for more laughs (and probably a few tears) in the Season 2 premiere of Somebody Somewhere, which is set to premiere Sunday, April 23 at 10:30/9:30c on HBO.

The second season will “follow Sam (Bridget Everett), a true Kansan on the surface, but beneath it all, is struggling to fit the hometown mold,” reads the official description. “Grappling with loss and acceptance, singing is Sam’s saving grace and leads her on a journey to discover herself and a community of outsiders who don’t fit in but don’t give up,...

The Shrink Next Door Review: Therapy Turns Toxic in Apple's Creepy Dramedy
Image
With the names of comedy heavyweights Will Ferrell and Paul Rudd above the title, you’d probably expect Apple TV+’s The Shrink Next Door to be a silly laugh riot. But fair warning: It is not.

The episode running times are actually a clue: The premiere is just 35 minutes, like a comedy, but later episodes stretch out to the 50-minute range as it ventures further into dramatic territory. Putting a nasty spin on the ’70s self-help era, The Shrink Next Door — premiering this Friday, Nov. 12; I’ve seen all eight episodes — upends our expectations by using Ferrell and Rudd...

Angel Olsen Covers Billy Idol’s ‘Eyes Without a Face’ for ‘Aisles’ EP
Image
Angel Olsen has released a cover of Billy Idol’s 1984 ballad “Eyes Without a Face.”

Produced with Adam McDaniel, the cover takes a straightforward approach to the song, placing Olsen’s filtered voice against synths and bright guitar. “Eyes without a face, eyes without a face/Got no human grace, your eyes without a face,” she sings.

The song will be featured on Olsen’s upcoming Aisles EP, out this Friday, August 20th. The project sees her departing from her usual folk and country-influenced songwriting in favor of Eighties covers.

Angel Olsen Transforms Men Without Hats’ ‘Safety Dance’ Into Sulky Quarantine Jam

Angel Olsen continues turning back the clock with her take on Men Without Hats’ “Safety Dance,” off her upcoming Eighties covers LP Aisles.

Similar to her rendition of Laura Branigan’s “Gloria,” “Safety Dance” showcases Olsen’s haunted, alluring vocals. Gone are the original’s throbbing synthesizers perfect for the dance floor — Olsen’s version is meant for sulking at home.

“I felt this song could be reinterpreted to be about the time of quarantine and the fear of being around anyone or having too much fun,” she said. “It made me wonder,...

The ‘It’s a Sin’ Playlist: A Musical Trip Through AIDS-Era 1980s (Video)
Iain Cooke
Music supervisor Iain Cooke found himself immersed in two different eras over the past year in helping craft the pop landscape of TV projects. He focused on one year for just-released AppleTV+ doc “1971: The Year That Music Changed Everything. But the bold miniseries “It’s a Sin,” with its frank depiction of AIDS ripping through the day-to-day lives of a tight-knit group of young London pals in the ’80s, proved a specific challenge.

“We were trying hard to preserve the integrity of this immensely personal story that [creator] Russell T. Davies had been trying to tell for many years, and so many of the choices were very specific and represented a time and a place”, said Cooke. “I’m a huge fan of Russell’s writing, I don’t know of many other writers that can have you laughing out loud then sobbing inconsolably within half a page, and he creates...

How HBO Max’s ‘It’s A Sin’ Music Supervisor Crafted the Perfect Needle Drop
Image
HBO Max’s “It’s a Sin” offers American audiences a glimpse into the AIDS crisis as seen through British eyes.

Russell T Davies’ four-part series, which follows the residents of the Pink Palace in the early 1980s, is anchored in love, fear, grief and shame, and the

soundtrack of the stories are iconic needle drops from the era. Among them: Culture Club’s “Karma Chameleon,” Wham’s “ Freedom,” Erasure’s “ Oh L’Amour,” Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” and the Pet Shop Boys’ “It’s a Sin.”

The initial idea was for the show to rely on score rather than commercial music. “It would be used for pivotal moments,” says music supervisor Iain Cooke. But the music for the series continued to evolve and grow that by the end, Cooke says, “we ended up with three and a half times that.”

With each episode having a multitude of cues,...

President Donald Trump To America: “Have A Good Life, We’ll See You Soon”

Update, with landing President Donald Trump exited the White House this morning on a red carpet, boarding Marine One to Joint Base Andrews where he took Air Force One to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, his final use of the presidential aircraft permitted only because he bucked tradition by leaving town before the inauguration of the incoming president.

After a 21-gun salute and “Hail To the Chief” blared through loudspeakers at Joint Base Andrews, Trump greeted a small crowd of invited guests including his children, their spouses, staffers Mark Meadows and Stephen Miller, among others, then gave a short speech in which he listed what he considers his administration’s achievements.

He ended his address with, “So have a good life, we’ll see you soon.” (Air Force One landed at Palm Beach International Airport at 10:54 a.m. Et.)

Though he wished the incoming administration “great success,” he did...

But he’s not just any man — he’s the track announcer, which tickles Kat’s fancy. Ahead of their date, Kat attempts to keep their text chain sweet and flirtatious, so she tells Brandon she’ll be there even if she still has diarrhea. [Editor’s note: She doesn’t have diarrhea.]

Phish, Vampire Weekend Cover ‘Gloria’ After St. Louis Blues’ Stanley Cup Win
Both Phish and Vampire Weekend paid tribute to the St. Louis Blues’ Stanley Cup victory on Wednesday with respective live versions of Laura Branigan’s 1982 synth-pop anthem “Gloria,” which the hockey team used this season as their post-victory locker room song.

Phish performed a fleshed-out version of the song, with keyboardist Page McConnell singing lead as he read lyrics from a sheet of paper. St. Louis Blues Beat Boston Bruins 4-1 In Game 7 To Capture First Stanley Cup
The sounds of ‘Gloria’ rang out in Boston tonight, as the St. Louis Blues beat the Boston Bruins to capture the franchise’s first National Hockey League Championship.

Ironically, the Blues won the title on the site of their last Stanley Cup finals appearance. O’Reilly won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the Mvp of the postseason.

The song Gloria by Laura Branigan was adopted by the Blues in January, and became its rallying point.

Gloria Bell's Soundtrack Is an Amazing Throwback to the Hits of the '70s and '80s
When Gloria Bell director Sebastian Lelio was putting together the soundtrack for the film, which is about a lonely divorcée who finds joy on the dance floor at L.A.-area nightclubs, he says he worked extremely closely with the film’s star Julianne Moore to choose the perfect songs.

Second time lucky: when directors remake their own movies
Sebastián Lelio has transported his drama Gloria to the Us with Gloria Bell, the latest in a long line of film-makers taking a second stab at earlier work

From an executive’s perspective, Sebastián Lelio’s new film Gloria Bell is the platonic ideal of a remake. While not strictly a shot-for-shot remounting of the Chilean director’s 2013 film more simply titled Gloria, he sticks to the script, often literally. Same tale of a middle-aged woman finding her groove, then love, and then herself. Same needle-drop of Laura Branigan’s disco lifesaver Gloria to soundtrack our gal shaking it all off during an electric dance sequence. Same cathartic climax in a vengeful hail of paintballs.

‘Gloria Bell’ Film Review: Julianne Moore Shines Quietly in Remake of Chilean Drama
Picking up a ticket to Friday night’s world premiere of “Gloria Bell” at the Toronto International Film Festival, I ran into director Sebastian Lelio, who is responsible for both the 2013 Chilean film “Gloria” and the new English-language version of the story.

Lelio knew I was a big fan of the original, so when he found out I was seeing the new version later that day, he offered a succinct piece of advice: “Forget about the first movie.”

In fact, he’s wrong. You can love “Gloria” and still think that “Gloria Bell” is an admirable reimagining that stands on its own while paying tribute to the original.

Darren Criss took home the statue for outstanding performance by a leading actor in a miniseries or television movie at Sunday night’s Screen Actors Guild Awards for his role in The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story.

The recently engaged Criss, who played serial killer Andrew Cunanan, used his acceptance speech to reflect on playing the man who murdered the legendary fashion designer.

Toronto Film Review: Julianne Moore in ‘Gloria Bell’
Sebastián Lelio
Sebastián Lelio’s “Gloria Bell” is the second film this year to end with the Laura Branigan song “Gloria” — the kind of high-energy empowerment anthem that recasts its leading lady in a different light — the other being Netflix’s recent Gloria Allred docu “Seeing Allred.” Speaking of recasting leading ladies, it also happens to be the second of Lelio’s films to close with that song, although there’s a perfectly good explanation for that: “Gloria Bell” is a nearly scene-for-scene remake of the “A Fantastic Woman” director’s 2013 single-woman drama, this time in English and featuring Julianne Moore in the role that earned Paulina García the Berlin Film Festival’s best actress prize.

Many were skeptical when the project was announced, much as they were to the news that Jack Nicholson might star in an American version of “Toni Erdmann,” and yet Moore insisted in this case that if...

Darren Criss Performs Italian Version of ‘Gloria’ (Listen)
Darren Criss
A sold-out crowd at the Largo at the Coronet in Los Angeles got a treat when singer/songwriter Darren Criss’ performance of Laura Branigan’s 1982 hit pop song, “Gloria.” Pounding the keys of an old-fashioned upright piano, the former “Glee” star belted out the first half of the song in Italian to honor both “Gloria’s” songwriter Umberto Tozzi as well as the late 20th-century Italian fashion designer, Gianni Versace.

“American Crime Story” fans are already familiar with Criss’ rendition of the song, as he sang the song in a scene while playing 1990s spree killer and Versace’s murderer, Andrew Cunanan in “The Assassination of Gianni Versace.” The scene has Criss belting out the song to calm his nerves as he drives to his next crime scene in Miami.

Criss tweeted the performance out to his fans on Tuesday morning, noting that the Tozzi version of the song would...

Rather than immediately reunite with Elliot (Rami Malek) and his state of confusion, Season 3 of “Mr. Robot” opens with the eccentric Irving (new cast member Bobby Cannavale), a BBQ connoisseur with a Bluetooth headset who it’s revealed is Tyrell Wellick’s (Martin Wallström) first call after shooting Elliot (thus establishing that Season 3 picks up right where Season 2 left off).

A week later, Elliot’s recovering from his gunshot wound and trying to get answers as to exactly what happened, though as the audience can see he’s lacking in allies — Angela (Portia Doubleday) is keeping things from him, Darlene (Carly Chaikin) is being hunted by the Dark Army (and working with the FBI), and of course Mr. Robot (Christian Slater) has rarely been a true friend…in fact, Elliot doesn’t even talk to Mr. Robot for the entire episode. That doesn’t mean his alter ego doesn’t make himself known,...

TV: White Gold Review
Author: Gloria Daniels-Moss

Everyone liked The Inbetweeners, right? Yes, the show had many cringe-worthy, repetitive and outright stupid moments but offered a fair, if heightened take on the burden of adolescence.

Damon Beesley, who co-wrote the series alongside Iain Morris, now branches away from the playground and brings us a slightly darker and sassier story with travelling double-glazing salesman Vincent (Ed Westwick) heading the show. The BBC2 comedy White Gold starts as it means to go on. It’s slick, smart and silly – there is fun to be had here that’s for sure.

It’s Essex, 1983 and here we meet cocksure Vincent, our charismatic and terribly arrogant narrator that gets his claws in from the get go. This obnoxious man is the epitome of a classic salesman; giving us handy tips and breaking the forth wall just to tell us exactly how amazing he is at his job and...

Leonard Cohen
2016 continues to take its toll on the entertainment industry, as another huge icon has passed away. Leonard Cohen died peacefully surrounded by family this past week. He was 82 at the time of his death. A hugely influential singer and songwriter, his career spans nearly 50 years. The man's label confirmed his death on Facebook. Sony Music Canada made this announcement.

"It is with profound sorrow we report that legendary poet, songwriter and artist, Leonard Cohen has passed away. We have lost one of music's most revered and prolific visionaries. A memorial will take place in Los Angeles at a later date. The family requests privacy during their time of grief."

Cher. What more needs to be said?

She’s the icon of icons, and her list of accomplishments would take forever to list. So on her 68th birthday, let’s pick the best of the best of her immense music catalog. For the purposes of this post, let’s keep it to Cher as a solo artist, and remember …

20. Carousel Man

Year: 1973

Album: Half Breed

Chart Peak: N/A

When the album Half Breed came out in 1973, it represented a bit of a comeback after two previous chart disappointments, thanks to the #1 title song (which we’ll be seeing later), which makes it curious why the second and final single “Carousel Man” was only released as a promo to radio DJ’s, and therefore failed to chart on the Hot 100. It remains memorable thanks to that bizarre merry-go-round hook.

Hump Day With Adam Lambert: Burn It To The Wick
On this week’s Hump Day with Adam Lambert, Adam rules the Glee universe again, and Tweets a … cryptic message.

Adam has really helped revitalize Glee this season, and I hope when the show permanently moves to NYC, they’ll save him a place. This week’s episode bodes well, as he was actually part of the roommate drama, and had some nice scenes with Santana (Naya Rivera). And yes, I did let out a Squee! when Santana responded to Elliot with this:

Santana: “You need money? Maybe Auntie Snicks can help you out with that” #Glee

— therealSnicks (@therealSnicks) March 5, 2014

Adam was part of the two best musical numbers of the night. He teamed up with Rachel (Lea Michele) for a cover of Heart‘s classic “Barracuda.” This is another song tailor-made for Adam, and he crushed it, even if Lea seemed a little out of her comfort zone. But,...

Fox has picked its Bruce Wayne for Gotham, and it’s … a little kid! Which makes perfect sense, of course. I don’t know why the hell I thought it would be a hot twenty-something.

I’m verklempt. I mean seriously having palpitations. I already posted the audio of “Barracuda” from tonight’s Glee, and here are Santana, Elliot, and Rachel doing Laura Branigan‘s classic “Gloria” (a song which may come in … very high … on my Top 100 Ladies of The 80′s List). ‘Gloria’ represents a confident counter to mainstream, male-centric dramas
Gloria

Written by Sebastián Lelio and Gonzalo Maza

Directed by Sebastián Lelio

Chile and Spain, 2013

The advantage that the new film Gloria has is its uniqueness. At one moment, the title character winds up face to face with a striking white peacock, a creature as rare as she. Though a number of actresses continue to work in Hollywood after reaching the age of 50, not many can claim to have an impressive filmography from that point onwards. (Not everyone can be Meryl Streep.) For any movie, from the Us or abroad, to put an older woman in the spotlight and to surround her with an intentionally no-frills story and world is extremely hard to find nowadays. The story told in Gloria is not heavily plotted, nor is it full of shocking, heart-wrenching twists; its charm is that it’s content to be a low-key, intelligent character study.

Paulina Garcia plays Gloria,...
