A Big Win For A Small Market As Oklahoma City Thunder Clinches NBA Championship
Image
The NBA Finals came to a close Sunday with a big win for one of the smallest of small-market teams in the league: the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Make no mistake, though the market may be small the team led by Shai Gilgeous-Alexander was mighty. Gilgeous-Alexander, the league Mvp, was named the Finals Mvp after the Thunder’s 103-91 victory over the Indiana Pacers in the deciding Game 7.

The Pacers, who had taken a 2-1 lead in the series and then had to force a Game 7 with a Game 6 win, lost Tyrese Haliburton early Sunday with an Achilles injury; the superstar guard was already playing through a calf strain he suffered during Game 5. Haliburton did not return, and the Thunder controlled most of the rest of the game.

ESPN Hopes to Hook Streamers With New Slogan: ‘Sports Forever’
Image
ESPN is digging into its past in a bid to spotlight its future.

The Disney-backed sports giant will, starting Thursday evening during ABC’s broadcast of the first game in the NBA Finals, give fans both a taste of its earliest days as well as a hint of what’s to come. An ESPN promo will feature footage of some of the first minutes shown on the cable network when it debuted in 1979. By the vignette’s end, however, ESPN will be highlighting its ability to interact with sports fans via mobile devices, and it will tout its ubiquity with game die-hards using a new catchphrase: “Sports Forever.”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=75due__2YLU

All this comes as ESPN readies the kickoff of a new $29.99 per month streaming service that aims to give subscribers access to everything it offers on a single platform. The new service — dubbed simply ESPN,...

Dubbing Platform Camb.Ai Secures $4M Seed Funding; Technology Recently Used To Dub Players Such As Novak Djokovic At Australian Open
Image
Dubbing Platform Camb.ai, which has recently been used for coverage of the 2024 Australian Open tennis tournament as well as by horror feature Three, has raised $4M in a seed funding round.

Led by New York venture capital firm Courtside Ventures, the investor group includes Trtl Ventures, Blue Star Innovation Partners, Ikemori Ventures, and Eisaburo Maeda.

Trtl and Dubai Future District Fund were early investors in the start-up.

Launched in 2022, UAE-based Camb.ai specializes in instantaneously dubbing any performance in over 100 languages, dialects and accents.

The company says it has broken several technological barriers with its Mars Tts and Boli Translator programs, which it adds go beyond simply translating speech to also “capture and convey the speaker’s original tone and nuance”.

The platform also claims to have one of the largest collections of source languages, including languages such as Afrikaans, Malay, and Basque.

Image
Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi are taking their show to the NBA.

The two WNBA stalwarts will host their first NBA game together on ESPN, bringing back a programming concept that has proven popular during the network’s coverage of the NCAA women’s final four tournament. “The Bird & Taurasi Show,” seen six times over the course of 2022 and 2023, has gained notice for the duo’s rapport and rogue energy. The program will be produced in conjunction with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, which is the backer of the so-called “Manning-cast” that airs alongside ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”

The pair will call a noon game on Christmas between the Milwaukee Bucks and New York Knicks and can be seen on ESPN2 and ESPN+. Scheduled guests include Jason Sudeikis, Tyrese Haliburton and Breanna Stewart.

NBA Announcer Mark Jackson Confirms ESPN Exit: “I Was Told My Services Were No Longer Needed”
Image
“Mama, there goes that man!”

That signature tagline will no longer be heard on ESPN’s NBA broadcasts as longtime announcer Mark Jackson joins the ranks of on air talent laid off of late by the network. Almost exactly a month ago, Jackson’s broadcast partner (and former coach) Jeff Van Gundy was among the 20-odd boldfaced names let go by the network. Since then, speculation has abounded about Jackson’s fate. The move came as a surprise to Jackson, however.

“This morning, unexpectedly, I was informed that my services were no longer needed at ESPN,” Jackson wrote on social media this evening. “Although shocked and dismayed with the suddenness of it all, I would like to thank ESPN and all the staff of the NBA ESPN crew for allowing me to be a part of the organization for the past 15+ years.”

Jeff Van Gundy Axed by ESPN—NBA Fans Are Outraged
Image
Beloved NBA analyst Jeff Van Gundy has been laid off by ESPN just before the long July 4 holiday weekend as a cost-cutting measure, confirmed by multiple sources. The 61-year-old analyst has been part of ESPN since 2007 and, for 16 years, has called the longtime NBA Finals broadcast alongside co-analyst Mark Jackson and play-by-player Mike Breen. The network’s cost-cutting is expected to have around 20 on-air layoffs, according to the New York Post. And even though Van Gundy’s exact salary is unknown, he made millions. Although he has declined to comment, his team has confirmed that he was part of the layoffs to The Athletic. His tenure at ESPN ended just before hitting a hundred NBA Finals games milestone. According to reports, additional cuts include Jalen Rose, a former NBA player and current studio analyst. Since 2012, Rose has been a member of ESPN and ABC‘s NBA pregame show, NBA Countdown.

ESPN Moves Rachel Nichols Off NBA Finals Amid Controversy

ESPN had to devise a new game plan for the NBA Finals.

The Disney-owned sports-media giant said it would move its veteran basketball reporter Rachel Nichols off sideline duties for the NBA Finals, slated to be broadcast tonight on ABC and feature the Milwaukee Bucks taking on the Phoenix Suns, and utilize Malika Andrews instead as it grapples with new scrutiny over how it handled a bizarre leak of Nichols on video appearing to disparage last year’s decision to use Maria Taylor in the 2020 Finals production.

“We believe this is best decision for all concerned in order to keep the focus on the NBA Finals. Rachel will continue to host ‘The Jump,” ESPN said in a statement Tuesday, referring to its daily basketball-news program.

Executives at the sports outlet no doubt hope the decision will put to rest a period of inner discord. In July of last year, Nichols...

ESPN Benches Rachel Nichols for NBA Finals Game Coverage After Her Maria Taylor Comments
Rachel Nichols
Update: An earlier version of this article incorrectly displayed a photo of actress Rachel Nichols (I) and linked to her page. This has now been corrected. We regret this error.

ESPN has benched Rachel Nichols for its coverage of the NBA Finals, following the uproar for her comments regarding Maria Taylor in 2020, where she suggested Taylor was picked over her to cover last year’s NBA Finals because of her race.

Malika Andrews will serve as the sideline reporter during the 2021 Finals; Nichols had held that position throughout the playoffs as part of ESPN’s top broadcast team with Mike Breen, Jeff Van Gundy and Mark Jackson. Nichols will still host her daily ESPN show “The Jump” on-site during the series.

Taylor will host the pre-game and halftime studio coverage, as she’s done all postseason. The NBA Finals between the Milwaukee Bucks and Phoenix Suns tip off Tuesday night from Phoenix on ABC.

NBA Finals Preview: ABC Shouldn’t Worry About Audience Fatigue for Warriors-Cavs Part IV
The NBA Finals tip off Thursday on ABC with yet another matchup between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors, but don’t expect audiences to get tired of LeBron James battling Steph Curry just yet.

This is the first time in any of the major professional sports that the same two teams will square off in the championship for a fourth consecutive year. And despite the criticism over the NBA’s lack of parity, that hasn’t made viewers tune away just yet.

“LeBron James being in the Finals is never bad for business,” said ESPN analyst Jeff Van Gundy, who will call the series with Mark Jackson and Mike Breen, on a conference call with reporters held Tuesday. “The Warriors are such a team of superior talent that Durant, Curry, Thompson, you know, they are going to always be a big draw.”

When you offer to review a game, you generally want it to be good, if for no reason other than the fact that you don’t want to spend hours banging your head against the wall playing a terrible game. In recent memory, however, the NBA Live franchise has given basketball fans everywhere a lot more aggrevating moments than anything else. After years of vibrant competition with the 2K series, around the turn of the decade, NBA Live took a considerable nosedive in terms of the quality that the franchise had to offer. While it’s always been a hope of mine that the series would rebound in a substantial way, I never expected the series to live up to its full potential. That was until this year’s game.

NBA Live 18 is far from a perfect basketball simulation.
