Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025)
The Opening Accidents: The Most Important Part of Final Destination?
Final Destination: Bloodlines (2025)
Last year, Final Destination 6 (which is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines) finally, after years of development and a long year gap between sequels, made its way through production. Now, just in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film, the new sequel has arrived in theatres – and JoBlo’s own Tyler Nichols is marking the occasion by taking a look back at what makes the franchise what it is: the opening accidents. Because it’s hard to get on a plane, ride a rollercoaster, or drive down a highway without thinking of them. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above.

Directed by David R. Ellis from a screenplay by J. Mackye Gruber and Eric Bress, Final Destination 2 has the following synopsis: Kimberly has a premonition of a horrible highway accident killing multiple people — including her and her friends.

‘The Final Destination’ Embraced the Early Aughts 3D Trend and Dialed Up the Silliness
Image
The 3D resurgence of the early aughts had Hollywood in a vice grip thanks to advances in technology, and, by 2009, horror began to embrace the format in a big way. That included the fourth installment of the Final Destination franchise, The Final Destination.

The success of Final Destination 3 meant a sequel was inevitable, this one planned for 3D. Final Destination 2 scribe Eric Bress and director David R. Ellis returned, with the latter taking the helm because of the 3D. The sequel makes full use of its 3D, incorporating requisite CGI jump scares of flying car parts and viscera leaping out of the screen, which, in turn, dates this entry more quickly than its counterparts.

Not helping is that this sequel puts all its eggs in the baskets of 3D gimmicks and embellishing Death’s morbid sense of humor; The Final Destination dials up the puerile humor with its more expansive deaths,...

‘Final Destination 2’ Expanded Death’s Rules and Delivered a Standout Opening Disaster
Image
If there’s one singular moment that stands above all the gruesome opening catastrophes and over-the-top deaths in the Final Destination film series, it’s the logging truck and the deadly highway pile-up it caused in Final Destination 2.

The original Final Destination set the bar high with a harrowing plane explosion mid-air. Its direct follow-up, released in 2003 and set one year after the first film’s events, upped the ante in terror with a far more statistically probable catastrophe that hits closer to home. Director David R. Ellis and screenwriters Eric Bress & J. Mackye Gruber (The Butterfly Effect) expanded upon their predecessor’s elaborate kills as well as Death’s rules.

Armed with an almost entirely new cast and set of characters, Final Destination 2 unceremoniously kills off Final Destination’s protagonist and premonition wielder Alex Browning (Devon Sawa) off-screen between films, noted via newspaper clipping and details by the sole returning character,...

The Butterfly Effect's 4 Endings Explained & Which Is Better
Image
The sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect follows Evan’s (Ashton Kutcher) travels through time and space in an effort to change his and his crush Kayleigh’s (Amy Smart) lives, and as such, it was given four different endings. Written and directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber, The Butterfly Effect is the story of Evan, a college student with a turbulent past who experiences blackouts and memory loss since childhood. In his 20s, Evan discovers he can travel back in time to specific moments with his adult mind inhabiting his younger body.

Evan begins to use this power to change his and his friends' lives, especially that of Kayleigh, who went through a lot of childhood trauma. However, changing the past also changes the future/present, and in the third act of The Butterfly Effect, Evan ends up in a mental hospital. Evan now has irreversible brain damage...

The Director's Cut of This Disturbing 20-Year-Old Thriller Went Too Far
Image
This article discusses suicide, sexual violence, and reproductive trauma.

For fans of Ashton Kutcher, who got to know the wholesome heartthrob through lighthearted fare like That '70s Show and Dude, Where's My Car?, his 2004 thriller The Butterfly Effect came as a shock. In this gruesome horror film, Kutcher has the ability to change his past — but every choice he makes begets an even worse outcome. However dark and disturbing the film is, though, the director's cut was too extreme even for the horror-friendly distributor New Line Cinema.

The version preferred by co-writers and directors Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber runs only around seven minutes longer than the theatrical cut, and most of that time is devoted to the radically different ending. Though the alternate conclusion was judged to be in poor taste — and understandably so — it does make a bit more sense out of the complicated and occasionally confusing Butterfly Effect.

10 Best Movies Like Netflix's Time Cut
Image
Since Netflix's Time Cut seems to borrow many sci-fi and horror tropes and themes from other renowned films, viewers who enjoyed watching it should have many other movies on their watch lists. Unfolding through several different timelines, Time Cut is among the many flicks that use time travel as a narrative device to walk viewers through the complexities of fate, grief, and the consequences of changing the past. However, despite being driven by a complex sci-fi concept, Time Cut does not take itself too seriously and focuses less on getting time travel "right."

Apart from featuring characters who travel through time, Netflix's Time Cut also presents a slasher element, allowing it to blend its sci-fi with horror. Although Time Cut is not as violent as one would expect a slasher horror flick to be, it features a fair share of brutal killing scenes that add some intense thrills to its otherwise familiar narrative.

‘The Butterfly Effect’ 20 Years Later: Exploring the Dark Side of Time Travel
Image
From the infamous grandfather paradox to accidentally creating a timeline where Ned Flanders rules the world, there’s an element of existential horror to every single time travel story. However, it seems that most filmmakers prefer to focus on the exciting adventure aspects of these mind-bending yarns, as very few films choose to explore the terrifying personal ramifications of going back in time to mess with events in your own life.

Obviously, there are several exceptions to this “rule,” and one of the most entertaining just happens to be Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber’s sci-fi thriller The Butterfly Effect, an under-appreciated relic of the 2000s that I think has aged into a much better movie than most folks give it credit for. And now that we have two decades of hindsight regarding time travel cinema, I’d like to take a look back on this weird little flick...

10 Time Travel Movie Rules, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Time travel movies often break their own rules, creating inconsistencies and paradoxes that can confuse viewers. Films strive to simplify time travel to make it easier to follow, but some movies have more sophisticated internal rules that require multiple viewings to fully understand. Despite some inconsistencies, a well-thought-out time travel movie can still be enjoyable and compelling, with strong performances and a captivating story.

Creating a time travel movie that makes perfect sense is a challenging endeavor for any director, and the first thing they need to do is establish some ground rules regarding how time travel works in this particular film. Sometimes a movie can sacrifice its time travel laws for the sake of drama, and it ruins the whole premise of the story, effectively disappointing viewers. The Butterfly Effect violated its time travel rules with a single frustrating scene where Evan traveled back in time to convince his inmate of his abilities,...

Final Destination 6: Key Original Character Reportedly Returning for Next Installment
Image
After over 10 years, Final Destination is returning with Final Destination 6, exploring the franchise's mythology and bringing back a key character. The horror sequel will be directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, and will start production once the SAG-AFTRA strike ends. The writing team aims to connect the new story with the original films, seeking the essence of the franchise and its origins, according to creator Jeffrey Reddick.

It's been over ten years since the last Final Destination movie hit theaters. Like many other successful franchises from the horror genre, the saga created by Jeffrey Reddick will try to come back to life with a new installment, Final Destination 6, which apparently will dive deeper into the whole mythology of the story by bringing one key character back.

The next chapter in the horror franchise will be directed by Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, the duo...

12 Underrated Time Travel Movies You Need To See
Image
Forget flux capacitors and sports almanacs. Where these underrated time travel movies are going, you don't need mainstream references. This year-hopping corner of cinema may be predominantly dominated by Marty and the Doc's souped-up DeLorean and emotionless machines sent back in time to kill us, but take a deeper look and you'll find a range of stories that take time travel to some pretty unexpected places.

If we were to have our way, this list wouldn't be quite as brief. After all, with the entire space-time continuum at their fingertips, you'd think filmmakers would've put a little more effort into mining time travel for the full mind-bending potential the genre contains. However, as it stands, truly left-field adventures can often seem few and far between.

That said, we're lucky to have a handful of movies that use time and space as a jumping-off point to tell tales that are wild,...

Stars: Brenton Thwaites, Theo Rossi, Kyle Gallner, Skylar Astin, Alan Ritchson, Laila Banki, Nathan Cooper, Rebecca Flinn-White, Kaloyan Hristov, Alexander Behrang Keshtkar, Shannon McKain, Yanitsa Mihailova, Matthew Reese, Shaun Toub, Billy Zane | Written and Directed by Eric Bress

There are a surprising number of horror movies set during World War II. Perhaps because it was such a horrific time for most the World, that horror directors believe it is a good back drop for the genre. This, for whatever reason, usually involves zombies but, unsurprisingly given the title, Ghosts of War centres around ghosts.

We see five American soldiers assigned to hold a French château that was formerly occupied by the Nazi high command. What seems like a relatively easy job, soon turns out anything but as a supernatural presence descends on to the soldiers.

One thing Ghosts of War does feature a lot of is gore. Perhaps because of the subject matter of war,...

New Movies to Watch This Week: ‘Father Soldier Son’ on Netflix, ‘Dirt Music’ on Demand
Image
July 17 is the weekend that Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” was supposed to open, but in the face of the coronavirus outbreak, the world has folded back on itself like a scene from one of the director’s mind-benders. As infection rates hit new highs in the U.S., theaters postpone or reverse their plans to reopen, and movies that planned to follow “Tenet” scramble to later spots on the calendar.

That leaves streaming platforms and on-demand services to once again pick up the slack, offering a genre-spanning selection of new offerings. There are showbiz documentaries — including one spotlighting Broadway legend Kaye Ballard, and another about animation mavens Spike and Mike — as well as Sundance-blessed indie offerings such as “Dirt Music” (with Garrett Hedlund) and “The Sunlit Night” (starring Jenny Slate).

On Netflix, there’s “The Best Years of Our Lives” meets “Boyhood” in the decade-spanning, New York Times-produced documentary “Father Soldier Son,...

Q&a: Writer/Director Eric Bress Discusses New World War II Horror Movie Ghosts Of War and Reflects on The Butterfly Effect
Image
They've survived the horrors of World War II, but five American soldiers discover a new kind of terror when they encounter a sinister supernatural force at a French Chateau in the new horror film Ghosts of War. Following its June release on DirecTV, Ghosts of War is coming to VOD and Digital on July 17th from Vertical Entertainment, and we caught up with writer/director Eric Bress in our latest Q&a feature to discuss the importance of keeping his period piece historically accurate, filming in Bulgaria, exploring the effects of Ptsd among Veterans, and he also reflected on what he learned from co-directing and co-writing The Butterfly Effect back in the early 2000s.

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on Ghosts of War! How and when did you first come up with the idea for this film?

‘Ghosts of War’: Film Review
Image
Sadistic Nazis, Ptsd-afflicted Allied soldiers, angry spirits and creepy dolls make for an already-formidable pile of scare factors in “Ghosts of War,” which then topples the stack by loading too many additional elements in the final stretch. This second feature from “The Butterfly Effect” co-director Eric Bress likewise has a trickily structured take on reality. But in this case, it’s closer to the realm of “The Cabin in the Woods” in that the initial, fairly straightforward horror tale is eventually reframed as part of something larger.

It’s the kind of narrative leap that can make or break a film. But here it . Beautifully atmospheric to a point, handsomely produced, “Ghosts” gradually disappoints because its thematic ambitions add more clutter than depth to a story that’s most effective at its simplest. Vertical Entertainment is releasing to U.S. virtual cinemas, on demand and digital July 17, after being available...

Formerly occupied by the Nazi high command, this unexpected respite descends into madness when they encounter a supernatural enemy far more terrifying than anything seen on the battlefield. The film stars Brenton Thwaites, Theo Rossi, Kyle Gallner, Skylar Astin, and lan Ritchson. What a cool concept for a freaky haunted house film - take us back to WWII and throw in a double dose of horror in addition to the Nazis. It's worth a look. 10 Things You've Never Noticed From The Butterfly Effect
The Butterfly Effect was a huge hit when it was launched in 2004, exploring controversial existential themes and delving into the world of philosophy and quantum physics to awaken the imaginations of the general public. This science fiction thriller also had a strong cast, including the likes of Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart, and Eric Bress. The main theory behind the movie’s script was that small changes can lead to huge consequences over time. This theory is explored through the narrative of protagonist Evan Treborn (played by Kutcher). Still, there are other hidden details in the movie which might further intrigue fans. Here are just 10 of them.

Groundhog Day and 10 more films about time, dreams, and perception
Groundhog Day and 10 more films about time, dreams, and perceptionGroundhog Day and 10 more films about time, dreams, and perceptionAdriana Floridia2/2/2018 11:30:00 Am

Today is Groundhog Day, where the myth lives on that a groundhog who sees his shadow will doom us to a longer winter than we deserve. Then there is Harold Ramis’ Groundhog Day, the film in which Bill Murray’s weatherman, Phil Connors mysteriously finds himself living the same day over and over again. On a traditional level the movie is a comedy, but it actually touches upon some really dark philosophical themes. It’s estimated by the filmmakers that Phil lives the same day for 10 years.

In honour of Groundhog Day, we’re taking a look back at ten other films that deal with time, memory, dreams, and repeated experiences. While there may be no film that tackles the topic as precisely as Groundhog Day, these...

Luke Cage Star Theo Rossi Will Bear Witness To The Ghosts Of War
Just as one supernatural war thriller begins to take strides toward production – yesterday brought news that Overlord, Paramount and Bad Robot’s WWII pic, had added Wyatt Russell and Fences breakout Jovan Adepo – Deadline is reporting that Luke Cage star Theo Rossi has climbed aboard Ghosts of War.

There, he’ll join Brenton Thwaites (Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales) and Skylar Astin as Kirk, a “God-fearing solider who has no problem killing Nazis but faces inexplicable paranormal events that make him tweaked and unhinged.” Those inexplicable paranormal events are the supernatural fuel driving Eric Bress’ (The Butterfly Effect) wartime thriller. Directing from his own screenplay, it’s understood the Ghosts of War will be summoned before the cameras before the year’s end, so expect one or two additional casting announcements to be made between now and then.

As for the film’s official logline, Deadline...

The Ghosts Of War Will Haunt Pirates 5 Star Brenton Thwaites
The up-and-coming Brenton Thwaites has developed a taste for supernatural action.

On May 26th, the Aussie actor will be part of the star-studded crew to feature in Disney’s Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, a suitably swashbuckling sequel that finds Captian Jack Sparrow hunted to within an inch of his life by Salazar, an undead pirate played with great menace by the great Javier Bardem. Thwaites is attached to the part of Henry, a young man traversing the high seas in search of his missing father.

Looking further afield and Variety is reporting that Brenton Thwaites has come attached to decidedly different breed of supernatural action. It’s called Ghosts of War, and follows “five battle-hardened American soldiers assigned to hold a French chateau near the end of World War II. Formerly occupied by the Nazi high command, this respite quickly descends into madness when they...

Ranking the Final Destination Movies
Sarah Dobbs Mar 16, 2019

The one with the plane crash or the one with the bridge? We try to figure out which of the Final Destination movies is the best…

Final Destination is the most existential horror franchise of them all. Its characters don’t get to hope for survival if they can outrun a man with a knife or shoot a zombie square in the head – they’re being hunted by Death itself, and there’s no escape.

The Final Destination franchise masks its incredibly bleak message with bright colors and inventive Mousetrap-style killings, but at heart, they’re about how everyone dies one day, and the whole world is out to get you. Hardly anyone lives to the end of a Final Destination movie; the ones that do generally have to go to extreme measures, and it’s implied they won’t last long beyond the credits.
