After 25 years, a far-out queer cult classic by Charles Busch is getting the Criterion treatment this month.
The Psycho Beach Party creator and star recently reacted to the 2000 beach party parody joining the Criterion Channel this month in honor of its 25th anniversary, reflecting on the “kind of wild” journey from its 1987 off-Broadway origins.
“It’s funny, it started off as a spoof of beach party movies, and the more I worked on it, I thought there was a little more to it,” he told IndieWire. “That maybe it is a little bit personal about how, when you’re young, and you don’t quite know who you are, and you feel like you’re a different person with your parents, your friends, at your school, it’s a bit of a metaphor for that.”
Busch added, “I believe the Criterion Collection has taken on the movie. I was just looking through their catalogue and,...

Sarah Michelle Gellar is getting ready to slay, and so is the new slayer — Ryan Kiera Armstrong.
The “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” actress, who is set to star in the series reboot, posted a video to her social media of the two training at a gym in preparation to take on the vampire-slaying roles. Gellar wrote, “Warrior 1 and 2 We don’t sweat … we sparkle.”
In the video, Gellar can be seen doing squats on a half exercise ball, doing Trx pulls and much more. And Armstrong is right by her side.
As previously announced, Armstrong was cast in a lead role in the pilot opposite returning star Gellar.

You may have seen “Psycho Beach Party,” director Robert Lee King and writer Charles Busch’s wickedly funny send-up of classic Hollywood, while surfing on late-night cable channels in the early aughts. Based on Busch’s own play from 1987, which was itself inspired by Frederick Kohner’s late-’50s Gidget character and her initiation into surf culture, “Psycho Beach Party” is exactly as the title sounds: part slasher, part beach movie, and all pastiche and split-personality.
That’s apropos, as a then little-known, pre-“Six Feet Under” Lauren Ambrose plays Florence, aka Chicklet, a schizoid who becomes the prime suspect in a series of comically mounting beachside murders. She plays the role as a careening cross between Tallulah Bankhead and Sandra Dee — who of course originated Gidget, the original wannabe surf girl, onscreen in 1959. Screenwriter Busch, who, gay and in his 30s, played the 16-year-old teenage girl Gidget — sorry, Chicklet...

Before Deadpool, The Proposal, and before Reynolds became Ryan Reynolds, there was Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Back in the ’90s, the Canadian actor was still fresh out of high school, steering through early gigs like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Hillside. And then came the chance to join Buffy as Xander Harris, the goofy, loyal best friend to Buffy Summers. It could’ve changed everything, but Reynolds said no.

Fans of Buffy The Vampire Slayer might see some of their favorites returning to the upcoming reboot. Sarah Michelle Gellar has teased to Vanity Fair Italia, that she hopes some of her former co-stars will appear in the supernatural series.
Gellar told the outlet that she and the show’s makers are working to balance new and old characters in the reboot. “My dream is to bring back everyone who has died, but space will have to be made for new stories as well.”
The show was famous for not being afraid to kill off characters, even when it wasn’t the most popular decision with fans. Decades later and fans haven’t forgiven creator Joss Whedon for Tara’s demise.
Alyson Hannigan’s Willow seems a likely character to bring back. Xander, who is played by Nicholas Brendon, is less surefire due to the actor’s own personal issues.

"My dream is to bring back everyone who has died," Gellar told Vanity Fair, while attending the Filming Italy Sardegna Festival. "But space will have to be made for new stories as well." The actor also touched on the creative direction for the reboot series, saying, "It will be lighter than the last few seasons of the original. Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans recieved unexpected news over the past few months. First, a big announcement confirmed that Buffy was getting a reboot. Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Summers would mentor a new Slayer, and the Buffyverse would finally be back on the small screen.
It was later shared that Michelle Trachtenberg, who played Buffy's sister Dawn in Buffy, passed away from complications of diabetes mellitus. Trachtenberg's passing had some Buffy fans questioning what would happen to Dawn in the series reboot.
In an interview with Parade, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Alyson Hannigan were asked if the show planned to honor Trachtenberg in any way. “Yeah, we'll do something. We'll do what's appropriate," Hannigan added, “I'm sure they'll handle it with utter grace," Gellar said,

Sarah Michelle Gellar revealed that she saw some familiar names on the audition roster for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot.
The actress who played Buffy Summers in the original series, which ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, recently chatted with Us Weekly with her former Buffy co-star Alyson Hannigan, who portrayed Willow Rosenberg. During the interview, Hannigan confessed, “I know somebody who auditioned for something on the show.”
However, Gellar also knew some people. “I know somebody who was on the show whose child auditioned on the show,” she revealed. “I know a few people from the show whose children came in.”
“It better not have been one of my kids,” Hannigan quipped in response.

Sarah Michelle Gellar recently reunited with her Buffy The Vampire Slayer co-star Alyson Hannigan, and a shared Instagram photo of the pair has sparked calls from fans for Willow Rosenberg's return in the upcoming Buffy revival series. The two actresses appeared on the Friday, May 9 episode of The Today Show to highlight the importance of protecting children from meningitis, as part of Gsk's Ask2BSure campaign.
The Instagram photo the two shared simply featured the caption "#Og," a nod to their original Buffy partnership. From 1997 to 2003, the two actresses co-starred in the hit series as best friends Buffy Summers (Gellar), a teenager battling vampires and demons while dealing with adolescence, and Willow Rosenberg (Hannigan), who evolved from a shy and intelligent teenager into a powerful witch that becomes a key player in Buffy's battle against evil.

If you've missed Buffy the Vampire Slayer, good news! A reboot series is in the works with Sarah Michelle Gellarreturning as Buffy Summers. But we didn't know much else about the series. Which of her vampire friends (and lovers) will make a return? Is Willow (Alyson Hannigan) going to be part of it? Now, thanks to an exclusive from TV Line, we have more of an idea as to what the series is going to be. And honestly? It is going to rule.
The new report states that Gellar's character will be part of the series but that the new slayer is named "Nova." TV Line believes that the name is a placeholder. According to the outlet, Nova is less like Buffy and more like Willow in the sense that she is someone who is a bit more reserved and lonely while Buffy was very much a "personality." David Boreanaz just ignited a Buffy the Vampire Slayer debate on Instagram, adding more excitement around the anticipated sequel series. With a pilot order nearing at Hulu, fans of the series are excited about the possibility of another chapter in the Buffy universe. Adding fuel to that fire is Boreanaz's recent comment on Sarah Michelle Gellar's Instagram. In a post, Gellar shared two pictures from Paris, where she is sitting and posing, wearing a black leather jacket. Boreanaz, referencing Buffy's vampire love interests, took to the comments and asked
"Is that Angel's jacket or Spike's?"
The question triggered a slew of comments. While some hoped it was Angel's, and others rooted for the romance between Buffy and Spike, others suggested it was Buffy's own jacket– a theory we're happy to endorse. The comments were a testament to Buffy's enduring legacy and the show's committed fanbase.

On March 10, 1997, spunky teenager Buffy quit her high school cheer squad to fulfill her destiny of slaying vampires and demons (while accidentally falling in love with one particularly handsome immortal)—and the world was never the same. Joss Whedon's wildly popular television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer not only ran for seven seasons but launched successful careers for nearly all of its regular cast members.
Its spin-off series Angel garnered a large viewership and starred Buffy the Vampire Slayer's David Boreanaz. But, Boreanaz and Sarah Michelle Gellar would eventually secure lead roles in even more noteworthy television shows and movies, along with fellow show actors Alyson Hannigan, Seth Green, James Marsters, Michelle Trachtenberg, Anthony Head, Nicholas Brendon and many others. Since this '90s teen sci-fi/fantasy show debuted 28 years ago, the fan base has loyally followed their favorite cast members to horror movies, sitcoms, procedural dramas, and even an iconic animation series.

A Buffy Summers comeback is on the horizon, and it may be happening sooner than anticipated. Sarah Michelle Gellar is set to return for the as-yet-untitled Buffy the Vampire Slayer revival series, which is nearing a pilot order at Hulu. Gellar will reprise her role and executive produce. She is guided by a Watcher named Rupert Giles (Anthony Stewart Head), but also has the "Scooby Gang," her friends who help as she battles dark forces. What made the show stand out from other teenage series was the excellent dialogue, stories, acting, and more.
The show was a major hit and ran for seven seasons, ending in May 2003, although...

Original Buffy the Vampire Slayerstar Seth Green discusses a potential return for the upcoming sequel series.
Speaking to Comic Book, Green opened up about what it would take for him to return to the world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer for a reprisal of his iconic role as Danile "Oz" Osbourne. "I love that character, and if there was more story to tell, I’d be there to tell it," Green said. "The upside of having Sarah [Michelle Gellar] involved so intimately with that revival is that she’s incredibly protective, not just with the quality of the work but the way people feel about it."

Buffy the Vampire Slayerwas iconic from the time it premiered in 1997 until it aired its final episode in 2003. Even after over 20 years, the show still maintains an 85% RottenTomatoes score and an 8.3 IMDb rating – an impressive feat for any show, but especially for a supernatural teen drama. No matter how much time has passed, the show still has a dedicated fanbase and seems to only be gaining more and more fans as younger generations discover it through streaming services.
The sharp, witty dialogue, compelling characters, and a plot filled with supernatural thrills made Buffy a surefire hit, and it doesn’t seem like love for this show has lessened any since it ended 22 years ago. With the incredible amount of love viewers have shown for this show, it’s no surprise that rumors of a possible sequel series, reboot or new spin-off have persisted for years – but, to the disappointment of fans,...

Buffy the Vampire Slayer may be giving its title character a second chance at life, as reports are swirling about a potential revival series on Hulu. This time, Sarah Michelle Gellar's Buffy Summers would act as the mentor to a younger vampire slayer — a fitting premise, since the original series ended with Buffy empowering a vast number of Slayers. Gellar herself opened up about the potential sequel series, saying it was born out of talks with Chloé Zhao, who's set to direct the pilot. Details remain scarce, but if Buffy is getting a sequel series, it only stands to reason that members of the original cast will return. There's one character, though, who would be better off left in the past for multiple reasons — Nicholas Brendon's Xander Harris, who is possibly the worst character in the series.

More than 20 years after saving the world for the last time, Sarah Michelle Gellar is preparing to slay once again.
After announcing a potential Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot in the works for Hulu, from 20th Television and Searchlight TV, the actress opened up about the pressure “to do it right” after starring in The WB‘s original series for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003.
“I wish there was a better word than overwhelming,” she told People. “It’s heartwarming and exciting and also incredibly nerve-wracking at the same time.”
Despite the “overwhelming” experience, Gellar noted, “I think we have this team in place that is legendary, from Chloé Zhao to the Zucks [Nora and Lilla Zuckerman], to Gail Berman. And I think people are going to be pretty impressed.”

As recently revealed, Hulu is working on a reboot of the timeless classic that is Buffy the Vampire Slayer. A pilot is currently being developed by director Chloé Zhao, and writers Nora and Lila Zuckerman, and Sarah Michelle Gellar is slated to reprise her role as Buffy Summers. The pilot will serve as a direct continuation of the seven-season series and will primarily follow a brand-new Slayer.
Fans can't wait for the upcoming Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot, but it will need more than Sarah Michelle Gellar's involvement to be a success. The Buffy fandom is famously enduring and passionate, and expectations for the new series are incredibly high. While the reboot should strive to stand on its own, it will never be able to escape the original series' shadow, and the best way for it to please fans will be to learn from its predecessor's example.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer first premiered as a feature film in 1992, starring Kristy Swanson as the titular character, as well as Luke Perry, David Arquette, and Hilary Swank, based on disgraced creator Joss Whedon's script. The film was not a hit, but Whedon later turned it into a TV series that premiered in 1997 starring Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy, David Boreanaz, Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon, and Anthony Head.
The series ran for seven seasons between 1997 and 2003, adding the spinoff show Angel in 1999, which premiered at the same time as Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season 3. The series was canceled after five seasons, and a reboot for Buffy has been in talks since 2018, although Sarah Michelle Gellar said several times she was reluctant to return. Buffy the Vampire Slayer aired its final episode over 20 years ago, but die-hard fans are still amazed at how well it explores the human condition. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar), Willow (Alyson Hannigan), Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and Giles (Anthony Head) overcome every characteristic, event, and experience that comes with being human, all while stopping the forces of darkness and averting every single apocalypse that comes their way. Unfortunately, that means they've seen, processed, and gotten through some of life's saddest, most heartbreaking moments.

There are few female characters more iconic than Buffy Summers from the supernatural drama series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The teen show redefined concepts, not just for female characters but the supernatural format itself.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer concluded over two decades ago in 2003 after a seven-season run, but its impact has continued, with the story continuing via novels and the 2023 audio series Slayers: A Buffyverse Story. However, a reboot was long in development, and it was recently confirmed it's happening, with Sarah Michelle Gellar expected to return as Buffy Summers. Now, the actress officially confirmed the news on Instagram, with an encouraging background story about working to make the reboot count.

With news of a possible Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot (sequel?) series coming to Hulu in the future, fans of the series are cautiously excited, especially since Sarah Michelle Gellar has expressed interest in reprising her iconic role. But, we are also obviously a little worried that our favorite Chosen One may not be treated in the way we want her to be, right?
The ground-breaking series ran for seven seasons from 1997 to 2003, even changing networks at one point, and fans like yours truly were along for the entire exhilarating ride. Buffy the Vampire Slayer was unique in a number of ways. It was a spinoff of a film with the same title, which was written by Joss Whedon – a film that received lackluster reviews. Whedon himself was very unhappy with the changes that were made to his original script, and was thrilled at the chance to make it what he had originally envisioned.

There are few details about the proposed reboot yet, but it appears Joss Whedon isn’t in the picture.
“Buffy the Vampire Slayer” is frequently found on lists of the best TV shows of the 1990s, and with good reason. The series was a model for other shows of the period, with its season-long story arcs and its strong female lead. Now, a new report from Variety indicates that the show could be nearing a return, with a reboot starring Sarah Michelle Gellar nearing a pilot order at Hulu.
Key Details: Gellar would reprise her role as a recurring character rather than the show’s lead. Original “Buffy” creator Joss Whedon is not expected to have a role in the show’s creative team. A pilot order doesn’t mean the show will get a full season, but it’s an important step in that process. 30-Day Free Trial $9.99+ / month hulu.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer has continued to reel in re-watchers and first-time bingers since it aired its final episode more than 20 years ago. Every episode expands and builds a supernatural world unlike anything depicted on television. There are vampires, of course, but also witches, werewolves, ghosts, and even vengeance demons, hell gods, demonoid soldiers, among other nasty creatures. Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her Scoobie gang, including her best friends Willow (Alyson Hannigan) and Xander (Nicholas Brendon), and her Watcher, Giles (Anthony Head), annihilate everything that comes their way, without fail, as the story continues to thicken and build intrigue.

Audiences can be very quick to judge TV characters, to the point that their first impression can often turn out to be entirely wrong, with the realization that they were great all along. This can easily happen to characters who oppose the protagonist in some way, as viewers naturally root for the lead and see anyone who is blocking their goals as a threat. However, as the characters' motivations become clearer, everyone soon comes to the realization that they harshly and unfairly judged them.

We could possibly be seeing another beloved television series get the reboot treatment soon, and this show is one many fans have been hoping to see return in some way. It's the hit supernatural horror series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and the show's main star recently announced that she'd be down to reprise her role as the titular character.
During a recent episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Christian Slater and Sarah Michelle Gellar sat down with host Drew Barrymore to discuss their new show, Dexter: Original Sin. At one point during the interview, Barrymore asked Gellar if she'd be open to returning for a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. Of course, this question got the audience immediately clapping as they awaited her response.
This wasn't the first time that Gellar was asked this question. When she was asked about a Buffy reboot in the past, she pretty much shut down the idea.

Everyone can change their mind, and it appears that Sarah Michelle Gellar could have done just that when it comes to her opinion on a possible revival of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. The incredibly popular fantasy horror series that debuted almost three decades ago in 1997 has been circling a reboot or revival for almost six years now, but the idea has never managed to gain a foothold. Additionally, Gellar has frequently dismissed the idea of being involved in such a reboot if it did happen, but that could have changed.
During an appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, Gellar addressed the idea of reviving Buffy, and now seems much more open to the idea. The change of heart appears to have partly been instigated by her latest role in Dexter: Original Sin. She explained to Barrymore:
“It's funny. I always used to say 'no', like, because, you know, it's in its bubble and so perfect.

Lasting for seven seasons, the legendary supernatural drama Buffy the Vampire Slayer follows Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and her pals for a hundred and forty-five episodes. While a handful of these adventures are part of season-long arcs, in most episodes, Buffy tackles an isolated foe or issue. These monster-of-the-week episodes are often dismissed as filler, but their consequences can be monumental.
The world of Buffy the Vampire Slayer is intricately drawn, with episodes frequently integrating subtle ties to earlier events. Sometimes, the show intentionally slips in small hints as to where the storyline is going. In other instances, an episode introduces one-off characters or concepts with surprising versatility. Either way, the truth of the matter is Buffy's life is shaped by her everyday adversaries, just as much as the 'Big Bad' antagonists people remember.

I liked Xander Harris in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, but he could have used more character development, as he changed surprisingly little over the show. Xander was played by Nicholas Brendon from Buffy the Vampire Slayer's first episode to its last, so he had a long time to get acquainted with the other characters. Xander was party to nearly every inside joke on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and made it one of the funniest fantasy shows on TV, carving out a new niche for fantasy. But for all that, I think he could have gone further.
Joss Whedon's critically acclaimed show defined the '90s for teens growing up at the time and served a perfect metaphor for high school - hell. With vampires and demons coming out of the Hellmouth portal, Sunnydale High School was the perfect setting to explore the strange number of parallels between teen life and history's scariest myths.

Trying to recapture the movie magic made by a beloved big-screen entry is always a risky game to play, but perhaps even more so when the new direction is television. Can a handful of episodes really deliver the same standard or even surpass what came before without staining the reputation of the property it's based on? Annoyingly, that is often the case, but there are a handful of television shows inspired by films that've actually surprised us in the best way by being not just good, but great even.
After they've gotten over the hurdles of winking at the audience with the world they've knowingly venturing into, some of the best films turned TV shows have been ones that have gone off and done their own thing. They don't go beat for beat with what's already been done before, but expand upon it by way of new characters, wild plot threads,...

Television series can use romance as an engaging way to develop characters and stories, and can connect with audiences through one of the most universal human experiences -- the desire to be loved. However, unsuccessful romance subplots can become a frustrating hindrance to a show's narrative, and can encourage harmful beliefs about gender and romantic relationships. Some of the best shows in the history of television have been marred by poorly planned romance subplots. Ill-fated, or just downright cringey, many of these romances are contrived stall tactics to keep destined couples apart or use romance as recompense for problematic characters.
The most beloved series on television found success by creating friend groups that became surrogate families. The sibling relationships formed between characters over the course of a show made romantic entanglements come across as creepy to audiences. These romantic subplots also often operate under the false notion that men and...

Joss Whedon’s Buffy the Vampire Slayer is one of the most iconic teen dramas ever made. Running from 1997 to 2003, the show combined supernatural thrills with relatable stories, giving fans unforgettable characters and imaginative creatures. The series followed Buffy Summers played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, a high school cheerleader turned vampire slayer, as she faced off against demons and apocalypses in the quiet Californian town of Sunnydale.
