Batman: The Animated Series Revolutionized the Batman Franchise & Beyond
Image
Batman: The Animated Series is a show that truly broke new ground. It was one of the first animated series to be given a coveted prime time slot on TV. It won awards and gained recognition within elite circles. It retooled, retconned and revamped some of DC Comics' most iconic characters, from Batman's rogues gallery, to his allies, and even the Dark Knight himself. It introduced new characters into the canon, most notably the incredibly popular and beloved Harley Quinn. It featured voice talent that transcended most shows of the era.

It embraced complex themes that would go on to influence the entirety of the DC Animated Universe (Dcau) from the '90s into the 2000s. Superman: The Animated Series, Justice League and Static Shock carried on its continuity. Its influence would extend beyond into other children's cartoons, including fellow DC Comics adaptation Teen Titans, other studios' own cartoons such...

Javier Botet in The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
How ‘The Last Voyage of the Demeter’ Returned from the Dead
Javier Botet in The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
“The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is many things – it’s a cracking good horror movie that is set almost entirely on a doomed ship traveling from Transylvania to London; it’s a refreshing expansion of “Dracula” lore; and it also is a nice nod to Universal Pictures’ classic monster-filled past. It’s existence, though, feels like a bit of a miracle, especially if you had followed the project’s development over the past 20 – yes, 20 – years. That might be the blink of an eye to an immortal creature of the night like Dracula, but in moviemaking terms, that’s an eternity.

Let’s take a look at where “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” started, with a spec script that shook up Hollywood, and where it ended up, as a big studio movie from Universal, with commentary from the eventual film’s director André Øvredal.

Just be warned: there are choppy waters ahead.

Tim Burton's Batman 3 Was Realized As Something Better Than Batman Forever
Image
Batman: The Animated Series is not part of the same continuity as the Tim Burton Batman movies, yet it felt more like a Batman Returns sequel than Batman Forever did. In 1990, some of the artists who had worked on the hit Tiny Toons show for Warner Bros. Animation were brought in to develop a Batman animated series spinning off of the success of Batman (1989). Batman: Tas was not an actual sequel to Batman or Batman Returns, but this instant classic Batman show created by names like Bruce Timm, Eric Radomski, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian would not have existed without the Burton movies.

There have been dozens of Batman animated shows and movies since Batman: Tas. Still, Batman: The Animated Series is considered to this day one of the best interpretations of Batman and his villains. Batman: Tas and the rest of the DC Animated Universe timeline eventually grew beyond the Burton films,...

Night Screams: 1987 slasher gets a 4K Uhd release from Vinegar Syndrome
Image
I’m a huge fan of the slasher sub-genre, particularly of slasher movies that were released in the 1980s. I’ve tried to watch as many ’80s slashers as I could get my hands on, but now and then I’ll hear about one that has slipped through the cracks. One I haven’t seen yet is the 1987 film Night Screams – so I’m glad to hear that Vinegar Syndrome are giving the film a 4K Uhd and Blu-ray release. I’m definitely going to be watching this one soon… and if you’re interested in grabbing a copy of Night Screams, you can do so at This Link.

Directed by Allen Plone from a screenplay by Mitch Brian and Dillis L. Hart II, Night Screams has the following synopsis: High school football star David has just won a four-year scholarship to the University of Oklahoma, and – with his parents...

Watch Kevin Smith Tearfully Pay Tribute To Batman's Kevin Conroy
Image
Filmmaker and pop-culture commentator Kevin Smith has paid a tearful and touching tribute to the late Batman: The Animated Series voice actor Kevin Conroy. Widely regarded as the definitive version of DC’s Dark Knight, Conroy first provided the voice-over for Bruce Wayne and his alter-ego Batman in the 1990s Batman: The Animated Series developed by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian. Conroy would go on to continue to voice the character in several other DC animated films and shows, as well as in video games, such as the best-selling Batman: Arkham series. Sadly, Conroy passed away earlier this month aged 66 after battling intestinal cancer.

Smith, who had worked with Conroy on his films Jay & Silent Bob's Super Groovy Cartoon Movie and Yoga Hosers, as well as his Masters of the Universe series on Netflix, recently joined a long list of stars and creators who have paid tribute to the late voice actor.

Is Batman: The Animated Series Getting a Sequel on HBO Max?
Image
Even all these years later, Batman: The Animated Series is still considered to be the pinnacle of DC animation, and now a new rumor has emerged that a sequel is being worked on with plans for it to debut on HBO Max. The rumor a follow-up is being developed comes courtesy of Kevin Smith's Fatman Beyond podcast, on which co-host Marc Bernardin shared some of his insider knowledge.

"HBO Max is looking at making a Batman: The Animated Series sequel that they want to continue that forward."

Alongside Bernardin's comments, Smith also offered his two cents, revealing that he too has heard murmurs behind the scenes regarding a proposed sequel to Batman: The Animated Series.

"I'm not involved, but I too have heard this, and I've heard this from very reliable people."

Of course, nothing has yet been confirmed, but considering that Warner Bros and HBO Max are still...

HBO Max Reportedly Discussing Batman: The Animated Series Sequel
As one of the most heavily-adapted characters in popular culture, there are unlimited ways that the Dark Knight can be reinvented, rebooted, reimagined and reinterpreted for any target audience, but one of the very best spins on the comic book icon came in Batman: The Animated Series, which made Kevin Conroy the definitive Bruce Wayne for an entire generation.

Bruce Timm, Paul Dini and Mitch Brian approached a Saturday morning cartoon with the utmost respect, creating a mature and complex program that dealt with the sort or heavy themes and intricate storytelling that animated superhero shows were hardly renowned for. As a result, Batman: The Animated Series was received as an instant classic, and by the time the final episode aired in September 1995, it was regarded as one of the finest animations of the modern era.
