New Documentary Explores Mexico's Soul
If, like newly inaugurated President Enrique Peña Nieto, you've had enough of hearing about Mexico's drug war, this documentary might be for you.

The new documentary "Hecho En Mexico," which premiered last week in Los Angeles, looks to show a brighter side of America's southern neighbor.

“Art, music, and philosophy can free us just for a moment from that drudgery,” the film’s director Duncan Bridgeman told Fox News Latino. “We are just trying to reflect a different Mexico than usually gets reflected on the screen.”

Starring such luminaries of the Mexican musical scene as Cafe Tacuba, Lila Downs and Los Tucanes de Tijuana, the documentary attempts to explore Mexico’s soul through its art.

And if you're still stinging from the death of Mexican legend Chavela Vargas, you'll get a chance to hear her speak -- an ABC/Univision article calls her appearance "easily the most poignant in the 88-minute documentary.

Kinky, the popular Mexican alternative rock band, is one of many talented musical groups, singers and celebrities featured in director Duncan Bridgeman’s entertaining documentary, Hecho en Mexico, which showcases the vibrant cultural diversity and richness of Mexico through its music. While the majority of their songs are sung in Spanish, many feature both Spanish and English lyrics. At the film’s recent press day, lead singer Cerezo and accordionist Lozano talked about their involvement in Bridgeman’s inspiring, often funny musical road trip through modern day “Mexicanity.” They discussed why it’s part of their cultural personality to be playful and poke fun at serious subjects, how they enjoyed being taken out of their comfort zone and given total creative freedom,...

Five Questions with Hecho én Mexico Director Duncan Bridgeman
Upon discovering his “inner hippie” many years ago, Duncan Bridgeman left a successful career in music production — for artists like Paul McCartney, no less — and committed himself to “taking things out of their boxes,” he said in a recent conversation with Filmmaker. Bridgeman joined forces with Jamie Catto, from the electronica band Faithless, to create the multimedia project “1 Giant Leap.” True to their name, the pair traveled to over 20 countries, where they shot film of musical performances and interviews that …...

This week's new film events
The Adventure Travel Film Festival, Sherborne

If you're the adventuring type, vicariously or otherwise, camping out at a Dorset girls' school for this delightfully homespun event will be no great challenge. On screen, there are bizarre and obscure travel films from the past 80 years: there's paragliding across Canada; canoeing down the Congo; around the world on a penny farthing; hitch-hiking across the Us; motorbiking through muddy Siberia with Polish devil-worshippers (really). Away from the screen, sample the smoked squirrel at the roadkill cookout.

Sherborne Girls School, Fri to 20 Aug

Mexfest, London

The familiar and the unexpected mix in this cinema-based celebration, which highlights the traditional features of Mexican culture – music, food, wrestling – alongside the less traditional ones, such as vintage sci-fi B-movies. There's still a distinctly local flavour to the latter, hence Santo Vs The Martian Invasion, with its masked-wrestler hero, or the brilliantly titled The Aztec Mummy Vs The Human Robot.
