A new musical written by Anna Deavere Smith and featuring music from the Ella Fitzgerald songbook is currently in development. Ella: An American Miracle will receive an Aug. 25-Sept. 21 work session, with Tony-winner Dee Dee Bridgewater and Charity Angél Dawson portraying the iconic singer at different points in her life.
The work session will conclude with a private industry presentation. A production timeline was not disclosed.
“Composers wanted Ella Fitzgerald to sing their songs because listening to her, they knew how their songs were supposed to be sung,” said Smith in a statement. “A jazz singer, a scat singer, she also famously both sang and defined the American song book. To say she had humble beginnings is a profound understatement. She sang America through some of its most discordant times. She was America’s love song. She was an American miracle.”

NBC has its sights set on some big names to fill out the already-impressive cast of its upcoming live staging of "The Wiz": According to several outlets, both Beyonce and Uzo Aduba are being considered for the part of Glinda the Good Witch.
E! reports that Beyonce has already been offered the role, though no deal has been finalized yet. According to Entertainment Weekly, producers have apparently approached the singer at least twice about the part, but the singer has passed both times; EW says that NBC may be prepping yet another offer for Queen Bey, though it's unclear if that's the offer E! is talking about.

Hold the phone! NBC's production of The Wiz just potentially became more awesome than we could have ever dreamed, because Beyonce has been offered a major role. Not only that, but it's the best, most perfect role imaginable for Queen Bey: Glinda the Good Witch! With a history like that, Beyonce's 20 Grammy awards (and status as the most nominated woman in Grammy history) would fight right in. This show was already going to be amazing, with both Mary J. Blige and Queen...

New Orleans — Little Big Town says that some networking they did is paying off with a chance to cross a couple of items off their "bucket list."

The Brother From Another Planet
Directed by John Sayles
Written by John Sayles
USA, 1984
A black, mute extraterrestrial with three toes and a detachable eye, played by Joe Morton (Terminator 2 Judgment Day), crash lands in Harlem, and spends his days working at an arcade and hanging out at local pubs, while hiding out from a group of “Men In Black.”
The film was written and directed by John Sayles (Lonestar, Return of the Secaucus 7 ), who once made a career in writing genre movies including the original Piranha, Alligator and The Howling. Brother was the fourth film in the director’s canon, released just after E.T., only unlike Spielberg’s hit, Brother was the independent urban take on the alien movie. Replacing the suburbs with Harlem and special effects with social commentary, Sayles manages a lot with a brisk $400,000 budget. Most people would think I’m crazy for placing...
