The Guilt Trip Review
The formula for a road trip comedy is simple enough: have a valid reason for a cross country road trip. Add two conflicting personalities, and put them them in close quarters to each other for  long periods of time. Watch the laughs roll in. Other movies have done this to great effect, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, Road Trip, and Due Date all spring to mind. Now it's the turn of The Guilt Trip, from director Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses, The Proposal), to travel down the comedic highway. Seth Rogen stars as Andy Brewster, an inventor about to embark on a cross country trip to sell an environmentally friendly cleaning product. Reluctantly, he has invited his mother Joyce (Barbara Streisand) along, forcing them both to confront some long simmering family tensions. As you can expect the laughs are secondary to mother and son working their way through their respective problems, and while it does have it's moment,...

Barbra Streisand at an event for The Guilt Trip (2012)
Exclusive Clip: Rogen And Streisand - A Match Made For A Trip
Barbra Streisand at an event for The Guilt Trip (2012)
The legend that is Barbra Streisand is not often compared to a bus, I'm sure.

However, bear with me. The enduring screen and stage icon (with Grammys, Oscars, Emmys and Tonys all to her name) doesn't appear on the screen these days with anything like the same frequency she used to.

Inventor Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) is caught in the car with his mother (Barbra Streisand) for 'The Guilt Trip'

But this week, like the proverbial Number 94, after not turning up for ages (this only her third film in a decade), she's making a double offering. Not content with (arguably) stealing the show at the Oscars with her mournful rendition of 'The Way We Were' in tribute to her friend and composer Marvin Hamlisch, she's turning up at the UK box office in a clowny caper that reminds us of her primetime era - What's Up Doc?...

Blu-ray, DVD Release: The Guilt Trip
Blu-ray & DVD Release Date: April 30, 2013

Price: DVD $29.99, Blu-ray/DVD Combo $39.99

Studio: Paramount Home Entertainment

The Guilt Trip is a road trip movie that swaps the usual buddies or romantic couple for a mom and son.

Barbra Streisand (Little Fockers) and Seth Rogen (The Green Hornet) are the mom and son. Rogen plays Andy Brewster, an inventor who’s trying to sell his latest product. When he goes on a cross-country sales trip, he feels compelled to invite his mother, Joyce. During the 3,000 miles of antics, they discover that while they have plenty of differences, they have some things in common too.

The Guilt Trip was directed by Anne Fletcher (27 Dresses) and written by Dan Fogelman (Crazy, Stupid, Love), but it didn’t get too much love from critics. Although Richard Roeper called it “a breezy, funny and warm road trip comedy,” Globe and Mail‘s James Adams said, “To its detriment,...

The Guilt Trip Movie Trailer
Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand take a road trip in the mother/son comedy The Guilt Trip.  The Guilt Trip marks Barbra Streisand's return to movies as a leading lady.

The singer, director, and occasional actress made a welcome comeback in Meet The Fockers playing Ben Stiller's mother in a supporting role. Now the Funny Girl and A Star Is Born actress plays another mother role with another funny guy, Seth Rogen.  And as the title suggests, this road trip is not voluntary.

Official Synopsis

As Andy Brewster, Rogen plays a struggling young inventor searching for a lucky break.  As his mother Joyce, Streisand is a pesky parent and vibrant widow ready to unravel her lonely lifestyle.  But when they come together in the front seat of a sub-compact, with years of

Review: 'The Guilt Trip' An Underdeveloped, Clichéd Road Trip Comedy Without Much Gas
There are at least two movies opening this holiday season which seem like they were stolen from the script vault at Touchstone Pictures, circa 1992. The first, "Parental Guidance," features the heavyweight one-two punch of Billy Crystal and Bette Midler, concerns grandparents outwitted by their grandkids, and could play snugly in a double feature alongside "Father of the Bride Part II." And opening this week is "The Guilt Trip," another movie that tries to wring guffaws out of a similarly super-tired idea (taking a cross-country road trip with your unbelievably stereotypical and annoying Jewish mother). Sure, the mother is played by Barbra Streisand and that does (admittedly) add some sizzle, but it can't compensate for how sitcom-y and dated the whole thing is and how, honestly, the movie probably plays better at 1 Am on TBS. Including the commercials. The outrageously simple set-up follows: Seth Rogen plays Andy Brewster, a scientist and amateur.

This holiday season, you can celebrate family at the movies with The Guilt Trip, which tells the story of Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen), as he embarks on a cross-country road trip with his mother, Joyce (Barbra Streisand), to turn one of his inventions into a success. With both funny and poignant moments on their mother-son adventure, each realizes that they just want the other to be happy. At the film’s press day, director Anne Fletcher (The Proposal, Step Up) spoke to Collider for this exclusive interview about what appealed to her about the script, the courting process to get Barbra Streisand to sign on, why the mother-son relationship isn’t often explored on film, how the test screening process helped shape the tone and jokes, and the biggest challenges of doing a movie about a cross-country road trip when you never actually leave Los Angeles. She also talked about...

Take Your Mom To See ‘The Guilt Trip’
There's no better person to sit and laugh with at the new film, The Guilt Trip, than the woman who lovingly specializes in giving you the gift of g.... Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogan are the best new comedy couple since Bill and Ted. And, like Bill and Ted, they go on a hilarious, excellent adventure, that you guessed, it leads to some great big realizations. But what's better than Bill and Ted is that almost all of us will recognize our own relationships with our moms, in this new comedy hitting theaters today. Just like Andy Brewster (Seth Rogan) and Joyce Brewster (Barbra Streisand), we don't nearly appreciate the depth of love our mothers have for us, and that we hold for them. Instead, we forget that our parents have had their own pre-kid lives, their own hopes and dreams, and their own aspirations. When Andy, a bio chemist inventor,...

Interview With Barbara Streisand, Seth Rogen And Anne Fletcher On The Guilt Trip
The Guilt Trip brings together Seth Rogen, who is one of the funniest actors working in movies today, and Barbara Streisand, who is a bonafide screen and stage icon. In the movie they play Joyce and Andy Brewster, a mother and son who ended up driving together across America to help Andy sell a cleaning product and to reunite Joyce with a long lost love. It’s awfully similar to numerous road movies that we’ve seen in the past, but it has a genuine sweetness that will appeal to moviegoers of all kinds (especially Streisand fans).

Recently, at the film’s La press day, stars Barbara Streisand and Seth Rogen, along with director Anne Feltcher, took the time to talk with journalists about balancing the comedy and drama in the film, the approach they took to the characters, why the script attracted them to the film and more.

The Guilt Trip Review
The Guilt Trip is something of a mixed bag. On one hand it has the combined talents of Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand, who work terrifically off of one another, and on the other it’s not all that different from other road movies we have seen in the past. It’s a little hard to argue with anything these two actors do, and that’s especially the case with Streisand, who has her first lead role here in a movie since 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces. While The Guilt Trip may win over a lot of people who are eager to see a heartwarming comedy during the Holiday season, it is in the end a hit and miss comedy that misses more than it hits.

Rogen plays Andy Brewster, an inventor who is busy peddling his new cleaning product Scioclean to anyone and everyone. However, Andy is not...

‘The Guilt Trip’ an amiable road-trip film, but not laugh-out-loud funny
The Guilt Trip

Directed by Anne Fletcher

Written by Dan Fogelman

USA, 2012

At the holidays, family members are bound to reunite, catching up and swapping presents after a year away from each other. And you’re likely to wind up at the movies, too. Though you’ll have your pick of many genres at the multiplex, sometimes the safe route is best to avoid an unnecessary family squabble. Often, family comedies are grindingly unfunny, or condescending and infantile. So it may be heartening to learn that The Guilt Trip, a movie whose concept is so high it’s stratospheric, is a pleasant, amiable experience at the movies, thanks to low-key performances from Barbra Streisand and Seth Rogen.

Rogen plays Andy Brewster, an organic chemist struggling to convince various big-name companies to invest in his invention, a completely non-toxic and non-poisonous cleaning product he’s dubbed Scieoclean. (Say it like “Science” first.

The Guilt Trip Review
The most remarkable thing about The Guilt Trip is how it's surprisingly funny despite being undoubtedly safe. Anne Fletcher's comedy has a straightforward premise and never does anything to make the audience exceedingly uncomfortable. Humor usually rests on the unexpected—if we know the punchline, the joke tends to flop, but The Guilt Trip finds its strength in execution. Thanks to the great chemistry between stars Seth Rogen and Barbara Streisand, you may know where The Guilt Trip is headed, but it's still a charming and enjoyable ride. Andy Brewster (Rogen) is a scientist who has created a safe and organic cleaning product called "Scieoclean" (a name that comes from the horrible amalgamation of the words "science" and "clean"). Unfortunately, Andy is a terrible salesman, and his pitches keep falling flat when he tries to sell his product to major retailers. When visiting with his mother, Joyce (Streisand), he...

‘The Guilt Trip’ Trailer: Seth Rogen & Barbra Streisand Trade One-Liners
Knocked Up may have established Seth Rogen as a bonafide leading man, but the star has since demonstrated a strong comedic range. Whether it’s the over-the-top stoner comedy of Pineapple Express or his surprisingly heartfelt supporting role in 50/50, Rogen has honed his ability to bring the heart of a film to life without sacrificing the laughs. Case in point, the actor’s latest comedy, The Guilt Trip, looks to focus on the relationship between mother and son.

In the film, Rogen plays inventor Andy Brewster, who invites his mom (played by Barbra Streisand) on an eight-day cross-country trip to promote his latest invention. Along the way, hilarity ensues and, we can assume, the pair develop a closer relationship and a better understanding of each other as a result.

There’s nothing particularly ground-breaking about that premise, as ...

Trailer for the Seth Rogen Road Trip Comedy The Guilt Trip
Seth Rogen has teamed up with Barbara Streisand for a new comedy called The Guilt Trip. The movie comes from The Proposal director Anne Fletcher, and it follows a mother and son as they embark on a road trip. The film also stars Adam Scott, Danny Pudi, Colin Hanks and Yvonne Strahovski. The movie looks like it has some funny moments, but I think I'll wait for it to come out on Blu-ray or something.

Here's the Synopsis:

Andy Brewster is about to embark on the road trip of a lifetime, and who better to accompany him than his overbearing mother Joyce. After deciding to start his adventure with a quick visit at mom's, Andy is guilted into bringing her along for the ride. Across 3,000 miles of ever-changing landscape, he is constantly aggravated by her antics, but over time he comes to realize that their lives have more in common than he originally thought.

Barbra Streisand & Seth Rogen Hit the Road in 'The Guilt Trip' Trailer
"My penis could literally grow an eyeball and I wouldn't tell you." Yesterday the first poster for The Guilt Trip arrived with Barbra Streisand being very motherly to Seth Rogen. Now we get to see the two co-star as mother and son hitting the road for the new comedy from The Proposal director Anne Fletcher so it feels a little generic and light, but Seth Rogen kind of makes this work for me. He's so charismatic and genuine and seems to have great chemistry with Streisand, so this might be a surprisingly charming comedy when it hits at Christmas. It's also nice to see Casey Wilson from "Happy Endings" pop up briefly too. Here's the first trailer for Anne Fletcher's The Guilt Trip originally from Yahoo: Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) is an inventor who lives in Los Angeles. He’s come up with an amazing organic cleaner but can...

First Trailer for The Guilt Trip Starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand
The first trailer for the road trip comedy The Guilt Trip has been released. The film stars Seth Rogen as an inventor who sets out on a business trip with his mother (Barbra Streisand) in tow. The trailer actually doesn't look half-bad, with Rogen and Streisand showing off some promising chemistry. There are a few solid jokes, and I appreciate the sweet emotional backbone that grounds the story in lieu of just having Rogen and Streisand go on a road trip with "zany adventures." Rogen's familial situation isn't uncommon (I can definitely relate), and it looks to be a nice foundation for the film's story. In the event that your family isn't keen on seeing Django Unchained this Christmas, The Guilt Trip doesn't sound like a terrible compromise. Hit the jump to watch the trailer. Directed by Anne Fletcher (The Proposal), the film also stars Yvonne Strahovski, Adam Scott, and Danny Pudi.

6 New Photos & Poster Of 'The Guilt Trip' Staring Seth Rogen And Barbra Streisand
In a moment of weakness, Andy Brewster (Seth Rogen) asks his widowed mom (Barbra Streisand) to join him on a work-related cross-country road trek in "The Guilt Trip." That's all the premise is and it sounds rather paper-thin, but the first clip of the film released earlier this week was surprisingly charming.  While Rogen is generally known as a quippy stoner who's often obnoxious, he's been taking a lot of atypical and quieter roles of late (see "Take This Waltz" as a recent example) and director Anne Fletcher ("27 Dresses," "The Proposal") says his character in "The Guilt Trip" is another nice guy. "Every son or daughter can relate to him," she told USA Today. "Seth has always been brilliantly comedic. He is the new Albert Brooks, with his timing and ability. I knew he was a great actor but we haven't seen it yet. People will be excited to see him like this.

First Poster for The Guilt Trip Starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand
The first poster for director Anne Fletcher’s (The Proposal) road trip comedy The Guilt Trip has been released. The film stars Seth Rogen as an inventor who sets out on a business trip with his mother (Barbra Streisand) in tow. Unbeknownst to her, Rogen plans on reuniting his mother with a long lost love. We saw the first clip from the film last week, and it looks like a rather promising family comedy. Rogen will appeal to younger moviegoers, while parents will be eager to check out the new movie from Babs. The trailer is set to debut tomorrow, so we’ll have a better idea of the pic’s tone then. Hit the jump to check out the poster. The film also stars Adam Scott, Yvonne Strahovski, Colin Hanks, Danny Pudi, Dale Dickey, and Kathy Najimy. The Guilt Trip opens on Christmas Day. Here’s a synopsis for...
