The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Archie Bunker's Place
Image
Even if you've never seen "All in the Family," there's a high probability that you're at least somewhat familiar with the character of Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor), his well-meaning albeit shrill wife Edith (Jean Stapleton), and his constant conflict as a conservative patriarch against a progressively evolving world. If that sounds like the set-up for every family sitcom ever made, it's because, well, it is. "All in the Family" is one of the most influential TV shows in history, and that's not even factoring in the web of spin-offs it inspired like "The Jeffersons," "Maude," "Gloria, "704 Hauser,' "Good Times," and "Archie Bunker's Place."

The latter was a direct continuation of "All in the Family," set primarily in the neighborhood tavern purchased by Archie in the eighth season of the flagship sitcom. "Archie Bunker's Place" starts when he takes in a Jewish business partner named Murray Klein after co-owner...

The 30 Longest-Running TV Sitcoms, Ranked By Duration
Image
The longest-running sitcoms in television history come from several different decades and have different styles of humor but have all left a lasting legacy. Sitcoms have always been a staple of television, as even classic golden age TV was known for shows like Father Knows Best and Leave it to Beaver gave way to even more groundbreaking sitcoms like All in the Family and The Jeffersons. However, when it came to sitcoms, lasting for 15 or 20 seasons was never easy as humor is subjective and changes over time. Yet some have shown incredible lasting power over the years.

Though audiences tune into sitcoms for laughs, the longest-running sitcoms show the different ways the genre can connect with audiences. There are the classic easy-going sitcoms like The Love Boat, some that mix in drama, like M*A*S*H, animated classics like The Simpsons, and darker sitcoms like It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

New Radicals Reunite for Kamala Harris on ‘Forward (We’re Not Going Back!)’
Image
In the closing days of the 2012 presidential campaign, Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois of the New Radicals teamed up with Ne-Yo, the Goo Goo Dolls’ Johnny Rzeznik, Herbie Hancock, Delta Rae, and Natasha Bedingfield to create the Barack Obama campaign anthem “Forward.” Twelve years later, Alexander and Brisebois have updated the song as “Forward (We’Re Not Going Back!)” for Kamala Harris, joined once again by Ne-Yo and Herbie Hancock. It was produced by John Shanks, Gregg Alexander & Nick Lashley. They’ve dubbed themselves the Not So Silent Collective.

New Radicals Release First Music in 25 Years in Support of Kamala Harris: Stream
Image
New Radicals are back with their first music release in 25 years: their versions of “Murder on the Dancefloor” and the Begin Again song, “Lost Stars.”

The new music was announced this week by New Radicals’ Gregg Alexander via an open letter penned to Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, who has used the band’s song “You Get What You Give” as his walk-on music at campaign events (including the DNC this week). In the letter, Alexander explains that the two singles arrive as “a musical gift to you, Doug, and our other fans,” in an effort to “rally the cause of democracy and encourage all artists to get out the vote.”

To that end, Alexander clarified that “this isn’t some ‘comeback’ — this is us doing our small part to support the fight for freedom!” Elsewhere in the letter, he praised Emhoff as a “family man of conscience who cares...

How Carroll O'Connor Kept All In The Family Going When No One Else Wanted To
Image
There's a fine art to ending a great TV series. Agonizing as it was when "The Good Place" and "Succession" recently packed it in after four seasons, it allowed them to go out with an emotional wallop rather than coasting on fumes past their expiration date. Admittedly, with less story-driven shows, it gets trickier. At what point should a comparatively episodic sitcom call it a day? It often comes down to the people involved in making it.

With "All in the Family," the writing was clearly on the wall at the end of season 8. With yet another impressive batch of episodes in the bag (including all-timers like the emotionally explosive "Edith's 50th Birthday"), creator Norman Lear and his team were ready to wind things down. The last two episodes of the season, "The Dinner Guest" and "The Stivics Go West," saw lifelong East Coasters Archie (Carroll O'Connor) and his wife...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From All In The Family
Image
There wasn't a more popular or influential (or controversial) sitcom in the 1970s than "All in the Family." Created by Norman Lear, the series was a stingingly hilarious satire of American attitudes as the country adjusted to the post-Civil Rights Movement era and coped with the increasingly unpopular Vietnam War.

The genius of "All in the Family" was Lear's ability to make every single one of his main characters behave ridiculously without becoming full-on caricatures. Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) was an unrepentant bigot, his wife Edith (Jean Stapleton) was a well-meaning ditz, his daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers) was a work-in-progress idealist who went from dopey to fairly sharp as the series progressed, and his son-in-law Michael "Meathead" Stivic represented everything Archie hated about liberals in one preachy package. We all saw a bit of ourselves and the people we have no choice but to call family in the Bunkers, and...

Monahan provided no further details on the project, including whether anyone from the film version is involved in the stage adaptation.

The film version featured songs written by Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois, Nick Lashley, Rick Nowels, and Nick Southwood. The film’s stand-out song “Lost Stars,” performed by by Maroon 5 frontman Adam Levine, was nominated for...

Image
The New Radicals will reunite for the first time in over 20 years to perform “You Get What You Give” as part of the Biden-Harris administration’s virtual “Parade Across America” event.

The 1998 hit single resurfaced on the 2020 campaign trail as the handpicked walk-on song for Vice President-elect’s husband Doug Emhoff – the soon-to-be Second Gentleman – during rallies.

How ‘All in the Family’ Spawned the Most Spinoffs of Any Sitcom
Image
“All in the Family” was notable for many things — including the fact that it spawned seven other TV series. The influential sitcom was controversial when it first aired on 50 years ago on Jan. 12, 1971, and it went on to confront numerous issues that hadn’t previously been portrayed on television. The show’s spin-off series continued to break boundaries with discussions of abortion, alcoholism and racism. The characters and mood set by “All in the Family” left a big mark on television history, including these seven spin-offs:

“Maude” (1972-78)

The title character, played by Bea Arthur, was a tall, ultra-liberal feminist who drove Archie crazy; she was introduced in as Edith’s cousin in two “All in the Family” episodes in the 1971-72 season.

The two-part season opener for “Maude” in 1973 dealt with the alcoholism of her husband Walter (Bill Macy). Variety said it “underscored that sitcoms this year are treading...

American Horror Project – Volume 1 | Blu-ray Review
In a commendable effort to save forgotten genre items either cloaked in obscurity or in danger of disappearing completely due to degrading source materials, distributor Arrow Video releases its first volume of a new series called American Horror Project. Fans of vintage indie horror from a game changing golden era should be enthused for this trio of inventive efforts even if not all live up to the excitement promised by the vibrant packaging. Lurid, carnivalesque, and even tawdry, it’s a new formidable platform for films unfairly dismissed upon release and deserving of another opportunity to provoke.

The earliest film here is the ungainly titled Malatesta’s Bucket of Blood, the 1973 debut and solo feature of Christopher Speeth. The plot synopsis promises palpable weirdness, concerning a middle aged couple, Mr. and Mrs. Norris (Paul Hostetler, Betsy Henn) who show up seeking employment at a seedy, run down carnival. Their zeal is a ruse,...

Birdman wins best film, director
Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Amy Ryan, Naomi Watts, Emma Stone, and Andrea Riseborough in Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)
A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.

Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.

The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.

Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.

Julianne Moore finally converted her fifth Academy Award nomination into a win for her performance in Still Alice in what...

Oscars Predictions 2015 According To Wamg
When the first Academy Awards were handed out on May 16, 1929, at an Academy banquet in the Blossom Room of the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, movies had just begun to talk. The attendance was 270 and guest tickets cost $5. It was a long banquet, filled with speeches, but presentation of the statuettes was handled expeditiously by Academy President Douglas Fairbanks.

The suspense that now touches most of the world at Oscar time was not always a characteristic of the Awards presentation. That first year, the award recipients were announced to the public three months ahead of the ceremony.

Today, Oscar pundits and fans alike avidly watch the precursor and guild awards to ultimately make their predictions in the 24 categories. Academy members have cast their ballots, so now it’s our turn for our Oscar picks.

Need some help in that office Oscar pool or at the party you’re throwing at home? Wamg is here to help.

Oscars: Adam Levine Can’t Wait to Sing “Perfect” Song “Lost Stars” on Telecast
By Scott Feinberg

The Hollywood Reporter

Adam Levine, the frontman for Maroon 5 and a host of The Voice, is one of the biggest pop stars in the world. He has won all the biggest music awards, played the world’s biggest arenas and scored multiple platinum and gold records. But he’s about to do something that he’s never done before, and that has him extremely excited: perform at the Academy Awards. On Feb. 22, Levine will sing Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois’ best original song Oscar nominee “Lost Stars,” which was featured in John Carney’s music-centric drama Begin Again in which Levine starred and sang it.

“It’s such rarified air that we’re gonna be in,” Levine marveled when we spoke on Friday, “as far as being a musician at that particular show. I’ve always been a huge fan of the Oscars and the way they put it all together.

Oscars: Best Original Song Nominees All In One Place – Hot Vids For Voters
Glen Campbell
An Academy voter yesterday told me she wished there was one place to hear all five of the Oscar-nominated songs at once. Alhough the Academy sends out a lavish DVD package of the Foreign Language, Documentary Feature and Live Action, Documentary and Animated Shorts, it does nothing regarding the songs, which at best show up in downloads or the occasional CD.

THR Song Summit: Common, Diane Warren, Other Nominees Talk Music, Oscars (Podcast)
By Scott Feinberg

The Hollywood Reporter

People tune in to the all-star games of the various professional sports because they provide a rare chance to see a significant number of the great talents of a profession gather in one place and have fun with one another. In Hollywood, such opportunities are surprisingly rare. And in the music business, they are even rarer.

That’s why The Hollywood Reporter was so excited to corral almost all of this year’s best original song Oscar nominees for an extended conversation and photoshoot immediately following the Oscar Nominees Luncheon on Feb. 2. And perhaps that’s also why the six individuals who joined us — Gregg Alexander and Danielle Brisebois for “Lost Stars” from Begin Again, Common for “Glory” from Selma, Shawn Patterson for “Everything is Awesome” from The Lego Movie, Julian Raymond for “I’m Not Gonna Miss You” from Glen Campbell: I...

Oscar Nominees Luncheon Brings Out The Contenders Just As Ballots Are About To Go To Voters
Bradley Cooper in American Sniper (2014)
One of the best events of the year, the annual Oscar Nominees Luncheon ran nearly three hours today at the Beverly Hilton. But it looked to me that no one wanted to leave when it ended. The mingling factor here, both during cocktail hour and when it was done, was epidemic. Next to the AFI Awards Luncheon, this is the one event surrounding the awards-season circus that actually is civilized and where everyone is a winner. More than 150 nominees from sound editors to superstars were democratically spread throughout the Hilton’s large ballroom as the Oscar show’s marketing slogan — “Imagine What’s Possible” — for the February 22 ABC broadcast was flashed on large screens over the stage. You have to think that that these contenders believe anything is possible, and just in case, they’d better start working on those 45-second acceptance speeches. And the importance of an appearance here can’t be underestimated,...

2015 Oscar Nominations: Much Love for Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel
Here are the nominations for the 87th Academy Awards. I found there to be a couple of surprises this morning such as The Lego Movie not getting a nomination for Best Animated Feature category. Also, the Best Picture category has just 8 titles, this is the first time the category has had less than 9 nominees since its expansion a few years ago; Gone Girl couldn’t have fit in there? I was also surprised to see Jake Gyllenhaal left out of the Best Actor list for his work in Nightcrawler.

The much deserved Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the pack with 9 nominations each, followed by The Imitation Game which landed 8. My favorite movie of the year, Boyhood, came away with 6 nominations.

The Oscars will be air live on ABC Sunday, February 22nd.

Soundtracking: 87th Academy Awards
Thursday morning provided its share of surprises and snubs, but the Academy’s musical branch took a pretty clear anti-star stance in the Best Song category.

One year after the likes of U2, Pharrell Williams and Arcade Fire dominated the music categories, Oscar’s Best Song voters left big names like Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Patti Smith out of contention.

The biggest names in Best Song, instead, come from Selma’s entry into the category: “Glory” performed by John Legend and Common. Because the Academy enjoys formality the pair’s given names - John Stephens (Legend) and Lonnie Lynn (Common) - can now be added to the collective trivia file.

The song was one of just a pair of nominations for the historical drama, but having just won the Golden Globe in the same category, it begins the race as the front-runner.

The rest of the song entries run the gamut,...

Prior to the announcement, A.M.P.A.S. and the show’s producing team, Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, gave the press assembled in the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre a first look at the new Oscar promo featuring host Neil Patrick Harris, titled “Anything Can Happen,” and given what went down this morning, that’s certainly the case.

Oscars 2015: Common, 'Lego Movie,' Glen Campbell Lead Song Nominations
David Oyelowo in Selma (2014)
As with last year's Best Original Song nominees, the Academy's 79-song list of potential nods was not a very good indicator of what would actually make the cut. Although names like Lorde, Lana Del Rey and Coldplay popped out as possible winners, voters opted for a diverse mix of pop and classic songwriting verve this year.

Accordingly, the tunes that are up for Academy Awards this year span feel-good Lego party ragers, tender, acoustic love ballads and moving tributes to history. And the performers are just as wide-ranging, with comedians rapping,...

The Nominations For The 87th Annual Academy Awards
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has just finished announcing their nominees for the 87th Annual Academy Awards, with Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel leading the way with nine nominations apiece, followed by The Imitation Game with eight. As usual, there were plenty of surprises to be found this morning, so let’s take a look at a few:

Selma ended up not making as grand a showing as many thought it would, nabbing only two nominations (Best Picture and Best Original Song). In a shocking turn of events, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl has been snubbed from Best Adapted Screenplay after being the leader throughout awards season, making it a wide-open category. Bennett Miller made a completely surprising appearance in Best Director for Foxcatcher, while Steve Carell managed to squeeze into the incredibly crowded Best Actor category. Bradley Cooper has also managed to sneak into Best Actor for American Sniper.

Oscar Nominations Announced: ‘Birdman’ and ‘Grand Budapest’ lead
The 2015 Oscar Nominations for the 87th Annual Academy Awards were unveiled Thursday morning, in which Best Picture nominees Birdman and The Grand Budapest Hotel lead the crop of nominations with nine nominations a piece. Boyhood and American Sniper followed with six nominations each.

Among some of the bigger surprises compared to our predictions from Wednesday, American Sniper had a big showing while hopefuls such as Gone Girl and Selma were virtually shut out. Gone Girl missed in the Best Picture category while scoring one nomination in total for Best Actress,...

Oscar Nominations 2015: The Complete List
Weeks of wild speculation, informed theorizing, splashy profile pieces, lunches where movie stars awkwardly make conversation with bloggers and occasionally aimless prognostication finally come down to this one morning: the morning where the nominations for the 87th annual Academy Awards are announced. The big show, hosted by the endlessly delightful Neil Patrick Harris, doesn't air until February 22nd. But this morning is when the hand wringing really begins in earnest.

There are a bunch of really handsome, talented people that are going to have a really good morning and even more that are going to be horribly disappointed (luckily they have the whole "handsome and talented" thing to lessen the blow). This has been one of the more unpredictable Oscar seasons in recent memory, without clear frontrunners or surefire favorites. So strap in -- this is going to be a wild morning!

We're winding down the year-in-review game here at HitFix as 2014 draws to a close. For whatever reason I took a year off of the ballot/superlatives posts, but I'm back with those personal assessments of the best of the year, beginning today with my top picks across the Academy's 24 categories. Check back in tomorrow for a list of winners from this lot, as well as others in a slew of peripheral categories. And of course, feel free to let us know what your Oscar ballot would look like in the comments section below. (Oh, and naturally it goes without saying this post is living in a parallel reality where I'm not confined to a specific branch for nominations and reign supreme over all categories with selections for each.) We'll find out if the Academy agrees with any of this when the 87th annual Oscar nominations are announced on Jan. 15. *** Best...

79 Oscar-Eligible Songs: An Opinionated Guide to an Awesome Year for Movie Music
Bono
When it comes to cultural impact, mega-sales and drama, this year’s Best Original Song category at the Academy Awards is going to have an awfully difficult time competing with last year’s category.

The 2013 winner, you might remember, was “Let It Go,” the anthem from “Frozen” that became a hit around the world and spawned a zillion amateur YouTube renditions.
