Happy Gilmore 2 Director Wants to Make a Sequel to Adam Sandler's Most Underrated Movie
Image
Adam Sandler has appeared in a wide variety of comedy movies, but he has only done very few sequels. One of those, Happy Gilmore 2, is hitting Netflix this month. If the movie is well-received, it could lead to another Sandler classic getting a new sequel.

To promote the sequel, which comes out on July 25, director Kyle Newacheck spoke about Happy Gilmore 2 in a new interview with ComicBook.com. The filmmaker shared his opinion that there are several other Sandler films that could benefit from having a sequel made after Happy Gilmore 2. Newacheck cited Little Nicky as one in particular that is ripe for a sequel, given how much Sandler continues to do the character's unique voice.

As Newacheck said, “Here’s one that I think would be interesting now. Because [Sandler] was always doing the Little Nicky voice on set like so just hearing it, I was like, I...

21 Years Later, Matthew Lillard’s $19 Million Sleeper Hit Finds Streaming Success in America
Image
Matthew Lillard has established himself as one of the premier Scream Kings in Hollywood, but 21 years ago, he teamed up with a star from The Boys for a slapstick comedy that’s returned to streaming charts. Lillard stars alongside Antony Starr and Seth Green in Without a Paddle, the mystery/adventure film following three men who go camping in search of the lost D.B. Cooper money after one of their friends dies. Without a Paddle is currently streaming on Paramount+, and the film has returned to the streamer’s top 10, sitting at #8 at the time of writing. Without a Paddle was maligned by critics who reviewed it at a 15% clip on Rotten Tomatoes, but fans were kinder to the film, giving it a 68% score on the aggregate site. It grossed $73 million at the box office against a $19 million budget.

It took a team consisting of Fred Wolf, Harris Goldberg, Tom Nursall,...

Judge Tosses Out Defamation Lawsuit Against Media Ratings Site NewsGuard
Image
Updated, with comment from Consortium News: A federal judge tossed out a defamation lawsuit brought by Consortium News against NewsGuard, a media rating site that gave the media outlet low scores for trustworthiness.

U.S. District Judge Katherine Polk Failla also dismissed claims brought against the U.S. government, which was named in the lawsuit as NewsGuard once had a contract with the U.S. Air Force’s Usaf Research Lab.

Read the NewsGuard decision.

Launched in 2018 by Steven Brill and Gordon Crovitz, NewsGuard employs a team of journalists to review news sites and give them a score of 0-100, information that is used by consumers and clients including AI companies, search engines, news aggregators, brands and researchers.

Consortium News received a rating of 47.5 out of 100, with a NewsGuard “Nutrition Label” stating that it “frequently published false and misleading claims about the war in Ukraine and other important subjects.” NewsGuard said that...

'Not Sure [Disney's] Aware They Made It': Ben Stiller Reflects On Controversial Comedy 30 Years Later
Image
Ben Stiller doesn't think his 30-year-old comedy would be released by Disney today. Nevertheless, he can still remember how fun it was to make the movie three decades ago.

In 1995, director Steven Brill's Heavyweights, which was co-written with Judd Apatow, premiered in movie theaters. Primarily consisting of younger actors, the series was set at a "fat camp" for children. Stiller starred in dual roles, playing Tony Perksi Jr., a fitness entrepreneur who takes over the camp whilst the kids work to overthrow him; Stiller also plays the character's father. Looking back at the movie upon reaching its 30th anniversary, Stiller shared a message on X acknowledging that the film would be seen as much more problematic today.

Somehow I don’t think this will be at the head of the Disney+ queue ever. In fact I’m not sure they are aware they made it. But that was an...

Judd Apatow & Ben Stiller Celebrate 30th Anniversary Of ‘Heavyweights’: “I Don’t Think This Will Be At The Head Of The Disney+ Queue Ever”
Image
Judd Apatow and Ben Stiller are celebrating the 30th anniversary of Heavyweights, a Disney film released in 1995.

The comedy, directed by Steven Brill, who co-wrote it with Apatow, was released on February 17, 1995, which 2025 is 30 years since it premiered.

“Somehow I don’t think this will be at the head of the Disney+ queue ever,” Stiller posted on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. “In fact I’m not sure they are aware they made it. But that was an incredibly fun summer in North Carolina 30 years ago.”

Heavyweights revolve around a weight loss camp for boys and the campers working to overthrow the fitness entrepreneur. Stiller had dual roles in the film and co-starred with Tom McGowan, Aaron Schwartz, Shaun Weiss, Tom Hodges, Leah Lail, Paul Feig, Kenan Thompson, David Bowe, Max Goldblatt, Robert Zalkind, Patrick Labrecque, Jeffrey Tambor, Jerry Stiller, Anne Meara, and many more.

30 Years Ago, A Disney Comedy Went From Box Office Flop To Beloved '90s Classic
Image
(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)

In a lot of ways, the '90s was a true golden age for Disney. From absolutely monster animated hits like "The Lion King" to the true Christmas classic that is "The Muppet Christmas Carol," it was a rich time for the Mouse House. Yet, not everything can be a winner out of the gate. Such was the case with "Heavyweights." Released in 1995, the live-action comedy about kids at a fat camp whose summer is upended by a weight loss guru simply didn't connect with audiences in its day.

As has often been the case throughout Disney's history, animation has been the studio's bread and butter. That was no different in the '90s, as hits like "Aladdin" and "Beauty and the Beast" took center stage.

Attacking The Watchdog: How Media Rating Site NewsGuard Ended Up As A Target For GOP Lawmakers And Regulators
Image
Updated, with Newsmax statement and Brill response: As Donald Trump targets news outlets for new lawsuits, his choices to lead key regulatory agencies have a media watchdog in their sights.

NewsGuard, a media reliability rating service launched in 2018, has been the source of claims made by Brendan Carr, incoming chair of the FCC, and Andrew Ferguson, incoming chair of the FTC, as well as Capitol Hill figures such as House Speaker Mike Johnson. Their claim: NewsGuard is out to “blacklist conservative news sources,” as Johnson put it in a statement last week.

But NewsGuard —along with a host of press freedom advocates — argue that not only are the attacks misguided, but they are, ironically enough, the very type of government pressure that threatens to chill speech protected by the First Amendment.

“The Constitution protects the expression of groups like NewsGuard, which simply provide opinions on the credibility of content and...

Every Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg Movie, Ranked
Image
Going from childhood best friends to some of the most sought-after writers in Hollywood, Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have delivered some of the funniest movies in recent memory. While Rogen had established himself as a comedic actor in Hollywood thanks to roles on Freak & Geeks and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, it was when he started writing scripts as well that his star really began to rise. However, Rogen was not alone in this endeavor as his old friend Goldberg served as his writing partner, quickly proving themselves a hot commodity.

Rogen and Goldberg came around at a time when R-rated comedies were still a strong bet for Hollywood. With the vulgar teen comedy Superbad and the wild action-comedy Pineapple Express, the duo began the rise in the industry. They soon began directing their own movies as well as venturing into television with shows like The Boys and Preacher. While they...

The 10 Most Evil Dogs in Movies
Image
Dogs are faithful companions and beloved members of the family, which is why they make the perfect villains. Audiences get to see something as familiar and comforting as a cuddly canine sidekick and it's transformed it into a menacing adversary. This is an effective way for filmmakers to unnerve the audience.

This is a concept that was first unintentionally explored in Old Yeller, which remains the worst movie a child should ever watch. The so-called family film did however show that turning a dog on its master is a solid way to terrify people and, as a result, some of the best movie bad guys are actually evil dogs.

OpenAI ChatGPT, Google Bard spreading news-related misinformation: Report
Image
New Delhi, Aug 16 (Ians) OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard — the two leading generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools — are willingly producing news-related falsehoods and misinformation, a new report has revealed.

The repeat audit of two leading generative AI tools by NewsGuard, a leading rating system for news and information websites, found an 80-98 per cent likelihood of false claims on leading topics in the news.

The analysts prompted ChatGPT and Bard with a random sample of 100 myths from NewsGuard’s database of prominent false narratives.

ChatGPT generated 98 out of the 100 myths, while Bard produced 80 out of 100.

In May, the White House announced a large-scale testing of the trust and safety of the large generative AI models at the Def Con 31 conference beginning August 10 to “allow these models to be evaluated thoroughly by thousands of community partners and AI experts” and through this independent exercise “enable AI companies and developers...

Will Donald Trump’s Trials Be Televised? Courts Can Consider An Array Of Options To Boost Access To Momentous Proceedings
Image
Donald Trump’s election conspiracy case may be billed as the trial of the century, but as things stand, the public won’t have any way of seeing or hearing it — save for going to the E. Barrett Prettyman United States Courthouse in Washington, D.C., waiting in line and hoping for a seat.

Federal criminal courts long have prohibited cameras or recording devices of any kind, but the momentous nature of the Trump case already has seen Capitol Hill lawmakers argue for an exception, and a coalition of major news organizations is expected to make some sort of appeal to the judicial branch.

Yet as unlikely as Depp/Heard-like live coverage of Trump’s federal case seems, given futile efforts so far to secure camera or audio of the proceedings, legal experts say that there are other options that would at least expand what is available.

Other options include:

10 Best Summer Camp Movies
Image
The best summer camp movies aren't all coming-of-age tales, and the theme of heading out for some summer fun has been explored in nearly every genre. However, almost all summer camp movies see an ensemble cast of characters leaving their homes for a few short weeks to spend time with their peers. Summer camp movies also tend to have a special nostalgia factor for older viewers, while younger audience members are entertained by the general antics of the school-free season.

Although a large sector of summer camp movies feature younger casts going through the awkward stages of growing up, not all films focus on the campers. Some opt to follow the counselors' stories or explore the larger experience of going to camp. From genre tropes like inter-camp competitions or the threat of a camp's closure to complete subversions that see slashers on the loose or campers going against authority, there's a film for every viewer.

Is TV News Good For You? ‘Nutrition Labels’ Served to Advertisers

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Season 2 Trailer: The Team Heads Off To Summer Hockey Camp
Image
"The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" brought a new generation of peewee hockey players to Disney+ last spring. In the show's first season, 12-year-old Evan Morrow (Brady Noon) was cut from the titular team, which had turned into an ultra-competitive powerhouse. His mother, Alex (Lauren Graham), formed a new team of ragtag underdogs called the Don't Bothers, and she even got some reluctant but much needed help from former Mighty Ducks coach and hockey player Gordon Bombay (Emilio Estevez), who had since become the owner of a low level ice rink.

Of course, by the end of the first season this team of misfits and their mismatched coaches banded together, and in an unofficial but crucial game with a high stakes bet, the Don't Bothers defeated the elite Mighty Ducks and took the team name for themselves. But in the upcoming second season of "Game Changers," the Ducks will be out...

Why The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Was Missing A Few Key Players
Of the many, many, Many reboots and revivals hitting streaming services, "The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers" is a standout. The return of Emilio Estevez as Coach Gordon Bombay in the original "Mighty Ducks" trilogy, alongside original screenwriter Steven Brill, helped the series keep the same spirit as the original films. Plus, there's the ingenious twist of making the peewee Ducks organization the villains of the story, having grown into a hyper-competitive, elitist sports team, allowing Lauren Graham to step up as coach of a new team of underdogs called the Don't Bothers, with a little help from Coach Bombay.

In the spirit of other revivals,...

Josh Duhamel at an event for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009)
Disney+ has set Josh Duhamel as the new lead for the net season of ‘Mighty Ducks: Game Changers.’

Instead of taking over the role of the departing Emilio Estevez, Duhamel will take on the new character of a former NHL player turned coach, Gavin Cole. Cole is described as inspirational, charming and hardcore as he is big on the hockey metaphor that applies to life. He runs the super-intense summer hockey institute were the Mighty Ducks land for season two.

Estevez departed the show after a contract dispute rumours quickly emerged that he failed to comply with the mandatory Covid vaccine proof but swiftly went on to state it was down to creative differences.

The streamer has handed out a second-season renewal for its revival of The Mighty Ducks. Production on Game Changers will begin in early 2022. A return date has not yet been determined.

The brainchild of original trilogy screenwriter Steven Brill, who pitched the revival to Disney execs back before Disney+ even had a name, the series revolves around a new Mighty Ducks powerhouse team. Kenan Thompson Will Return for The Mighty Ducks Season 2 If It Happens
Image
Kenan Thompson will return for The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers if the series gets a second season on Disney+. Serving as a sequel to the original movie trilogy from the 1990s, Game Changers stars Emilio Estevez reprising his role as Coach Gordon Bombay. Recently wrapping its first season on Disney+, the show also featured some of the original Ducks coming back for special appearances, though there were many key characters that didn't make it.

One person who was nowhere to be seen was Kenan Thompson, who played Russ Tyler in the second and third Mighty Ducks movies. It was a bummer not to see him, though it wasn't shocking, as Thompson's already balancing his SNL schedule with his new sitcom Kenan. Even so, the former child star has apparently agreed to appear in a potential second season, as showrunner Steven Brill revealed in a new interview with TVLine.

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Season 2 to Bring Back Original Star Joshua Jackson?
Image
Joshua Jackson will not appear as fan favorite character Charlie Conway in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, but fans shouldn't give up hope on seeing the actor's return to the franchise just yet. Debuting on Disney+ in March , Game Changers brings back series star Emilio Estevez to reprise the role of Coach Gordon Bombay. Serving as a sequel to the movie trilogy, the door was also left wide open for other original stars to return.

In the newest episode of the series, six original cast members came back to reprise their roles as former members of The Mighty Ducks junior hockey team. The episode, titled "The Spirit of the Ducks," commemorates the 25th anniversary of the team's formation. Coming in for the special occasion were former Ducks players Fulton Reed (Elden Henson), Averman (Matt Doherty), Adam Banks (Vinny La Russo), Connie (Marguerite Moreau), Guy (Garret Henson), and Kenny Wu (Justin Wong).

‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers': Why Joshua Jackson Wasn’t Part of the Reunion
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (2021)
Our faithful captain was nowhere to be seen as the original Ducks returned to town

(Warning: Slight spoilers ahead for this week’s episode of “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers”)

This week’s episode of “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” gave those who grew up on the films exactly what they were looking for — the return of the original Ducks. Well, most of them at least. And, as great as it was seeing the former Ducks we did get, there was a notable absence: Charlie.

The episode brought the return of six original Ducks: Fulton Reed (Elden Henson), Adam Banks (Vinny La Russo), Kenny Wu (Justin Wong), Averman (Matt Doherty), Connie (Marguerite Moreau) and Guy (Garret Henson). They were all back to town for the Spirit of the Ducks gala, celebrating the history of the team.

Charlie Conway, played by Joshua Jackson, was the original captain of the Mighty Ducks.

‘The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers’ Review: Delightful Disney+ Sequel Series Leads with Its Heart
Image
Maybe more than anything, “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers” is a feat of casting. Yes, the Disney+ revival is a continuation of a beloved film series that helped birth not just a generation of fans but an NHL franchise (and an animated spinoff with a theme song still lodged in the subconscious of every kid that watched more than one episode).

But all of that previous success would never have happened if the youth hockey team that helped get the whole thing started almost 30 years ago didn’t feel like an actual team. So even though this new “Mighty Ducks” TV show finds the Ducks as a junior hockey powerhouse made up of heartless bullies, the new ragtag squad that forms in its wake is a club that’s instantly worth rooting for.

When Evan (Brady Noon) gets cut from the overbearing Ducks as the supposed weak link, his mom...

The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers Review (Spoiler-Free)
Shaun Weiss in The Mighty Ducks (1992)
Get this: a new series based on an existing film franchise is hitting a streaming service this month. Shocking, right? With the streaming wars in full effect and beloved, existing intellectual property coveted by media conglomerates more than ever, it’s safe to assume that reboots, reimaginings, and retreads will be hitting Netflix, HBO Max, and Disney+ until the end of time. Everything old is new again. And again. And again. And again.

Disney deciding to dust off The Mighty Ducks franchise is not the least bit surprising. If anything, it’s surprising that a reboot has taken this long. Perhaps the most well-remembered of the ‘90s underdog sports movies geared at kids, The Mighty Ducks followed a familiar format of a disinterested coach (played by Emilio Estevez) leading a group of ragtag kids that he eventually embraces and teaches to win. Unlike the other movies listed above, the success...

Quack Attack: Original Mighty Ducks Stars to Appear in New Disney+ Series
The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers (2021)
This will give you a reason to quack! On Thursday, March 18, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers creator Steven Brill, who wrote the original Mighty Ducks franchise, announced that some of the Og stars will be appearing in episode six of the Disney+ series. As Brill told EW, former cast members Elden Henson, Matt Doherty, Vincent Larusso, Marguerite Moreau, Garette Henson and Justin Wong will all be reprising their roles. "It starts with a fun encounter Coach Bombay (Emilio Estevez) has with Fulton (Henson)—they have an interesting run-in on the street reminiscent of ways they used to meet each other back in the early days," Brill said. "This chance meeting between Bombay and Fulton leads to a...

The Ducks will fly again in The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, premiering Friday, March 26 on Disney+. A Beloved Adam Sandler Movie Is Dominating Netflix Today
Image
In the least surprising piece of news you’ll read today, one of the ten most-watched movies on Netflix at the moment stars Adam Sandler. The actor is a regular fixture on the streaming service’s viewing charts, so much so that subscribers have spent a collective total of well over 200,000 years consuming his content and lapping up the derivative comedies that turned him into a critically bulletproof megastar.

Without fail, every single Sandler vehicle that gets added to the Netflix library will crack the Top 10, and if it doesn’t, then hell has probably frozen over. In a coincidental segue, Little Nicky is the one drawing the eyeballs of viewers around the world today, sitting at number 10 on the chart. Among the Happy Madison head honcho’s fans, it generally tends to be held up as one of his better and more beloved efforts, but those not so enamored...

‘Hubie Halloween’ Review (Netflix)
Image
Stars: Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Julie Bowen, Ray Liotta, Steve Buscemi, Rob Schneider, Maya Rudolph, Tim Meadows, June Squibb, Michael Chiklis, George Wallace, Kenan Thompson, Ben Stiller, Shaquille O’Neal, Jackie Sandler | Written by Tim Herlihy, Adam Sandler | Directed by Steven Brill

Hubie Halloween tells the story of Hubie Dubois, a Salem native who’s devoted to his hometown and in particular the celebration of Halloween that takes place there every year. Unfortunately the rest of Salem, part from handful of folks, think of Hubie as a loser – often making a mockery of him and his peculiar mannerisms. However this years Halloween celebration is marred by something… spooky. An escaped mental patient and a possible werewolf next door mean that Hubie’s work to protect his town is cut out for him; especially when people start to go missing!

For longtime fans of Sandler’s oeuvre – and I consider myself as...

Streaming This Weekend: Hubie Halloween, Scooby-Doo, American Pie & More
Image
It looked like the movie business was making strides toward something resembling normalcy in recent weeks. Yet, that seems impossible now as Regal cinemas is closing its doors again. AMC and Cinemark will try to weather the storm but, for many of us, it's still streaming time. Luckily, there is no shortage of options for those in need of a new movie to watch this weekend.

This week sees the release of Adam Sandler's new Halloween movie on Netflix, as well as several other horror movies, including the latest from Jim Cummings. We also have a new American Pie movie, an alien invasion comedy and a movie about teenagers spontaneously combusting. Here are this week's streaming selections.

Kevin James Reveals The Hardest Part About Shooting Adam Sandler’s Hubie Halloween
Working on an Adam Sandler movie doesn’t appear to be the most taxing endeavor, with the Happy Madison Productions head honcho gathering together a bunch of his friends to head off to various locations around the world to have a good time and churn out a series of disposable comedies that will never garner much in the way of critical acclaim, but always draw in a huge audience.

Sandler’s latest effort, Hubie Halloween, is no different, with the holiday film rocketing to the #1 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 most-watched list just 24 hours after it was released despite another tepid response that sees it holding a steadfastly mediocre Rotten Tomatoes score of 51%, while we gave it a bang average review ourselves.

Director Steven Brill, writer Tim Herlihy and stars Kevin James, Steve Buscemi and Rob Schneider are all back for their umpteenth collaboration with the leading man, and James...

Adam Sandler (Mostly) Returns To Comedic Form With “Hubie Halloween”
Adam Sandler
You really do usually know what you’re getting with a new Adam Sandler comedy on Netflix. After all, the actor and comedian has been consistently putting his movies on to the streaming service for years, being one of the first to commit to them. Obviously, last year’s turn in Uncut Gems is an exception, but lately, Sandler has been content to have a good time and ignore those claiming he’s phoning it in. The days of his funny flicks being well liked by audiences and at least decently regarded by critics have largely disappeared. Now, Hubie Halloween comes along and actually harkens back to those days. It’s not Big Daddy, but now playing on Netflix, it’s almost certainly his most overall successful work for the streamer. The film is a comedy with some slight horror elements to it, though at its core it’s just another Happy Madison production.

Hubie Halloween Review
Adam Sandler has to be one of the most infuriating actors in Hollywood. After all, there’s very clearly a talented individual lurking just underneath the surface, one that made a welcome showing in last year’s Uncut Gems, but he consistently falls back on lazy and uninspired comedies where he seems content to just put in the minimum amount of work required to collect his paycheck.

Such is the case with his latest Netflix exclusive, Hubie Halloween. Is it the worst movie he’s ever made? Far from it. In fact, it isn’t even close to being Sandler’s weakest effort, an honor that surely belongs to either Jack and Jill or The Ridiculous 6. That being said, it follows the Happy Madison Productions template to a tee, with the end result being a painfully generic, completely uninspired and utterly disposable piece of work.

Hubie Halloween will certainly appeal...
