New ‘Three Lions’ anthem to be released with Christmas spin and Lioness win lyrics
Image
A new version of the David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and The Lightning Seed’s iconic “Three Lions” football anthem will be released.

Last month, The Lightning Seeds singer Ian Broudie revealed that they were in talks about releasing a new version of the song ahead of the World Cup in Qatar this year.

Given the time of year, Broudie said the song could have a Christmas spin on it and that it would also have lyrics changed to acknowledge the Lionesses’ triumphant win at the Euros this year.

“Three Lions” was originally released by comedians David Baddiel and Frank Skinner and the rock band The Lightning Seeds in 1996 for the Euros. It was then recorded again for the 1998 World Cup.

Now, Baddiel has confirmed that the updated song will be released and that they filmed the video recently – and the song will definitely be “Christmassy”.

“We filmed the video the other day,...

Tove Lo review, Dirt Femme: Spinning her lows into tendon-twanging highs
Image
“I’m an attention wh***,” repeats Tove Lo in a robotic monotone on her fifth album, Dirt Femme. Bang on brand for the 34-year-old Swede born Ebba Tove Elsa Nilsson, whose sad, confessional bangers once saw her hailed as “the world’s most brutally honest pop star”. So the narratives are dependably punchy through this record, and they’re carried by solidly danceable Eighties and Nineties club beats. Not an original sound, then. But one that allows her more challenging or subversive thoughts to slide slyly into a night out on the town.

Thematically, Lo is always trying to square her bold, feminist, exhibitionist streak (which saw her bare her breasts on stage at Glastonbury) with the anxiety and self-doubt that left her struggling with an eating disorder for five years. Commanding songs such as “Attention Wh***” (on which she demands “keep your eyes on me” while California rapper Channel...

The Lightning Seeds’ Ian Broudie: ‘I had to rebuild myself’
Image
Ian Broudie sighs deeply, soul-punctured by every mention of “the record”. Gamely but wearily, he lets the warm-up questions about the Lionesses’ win pile up. He was recording an episode of Never Mind the Buzzcocks at the time. He didn’t meet up with David Baddiel and Frank Skinner to celebrate. His phone didn’t go crazy. There’s talk (since confirmed) that they might re-record the pan-cultural phenomenon that is “Three Lions” for the unusual event of the World Cup being in Qatar in December, because “I’d love to have a Christmas football song”.

“I love the women winning it, now I want the blokes to win it three times. It’ll never end for me,” he says. Sigh. “Is this all about that song? Because I’ve got a new album, y’know…”

If you’ve got Broudie pegged as synthpop’s Mr Brightside, the grandmaster of...

— Chris Evans (@achrisevans) May 30, 2015

Things shouldn't get too awkward between former rivals Blur and Liam Gallagher, after the latter shared his love for the band's new material on Twitter earlier this month.

The special will include one or two blasts from the past - such as Freak or Unique, Ugly Bloke and Fat Lookalikes - as well as the introduction of new features.

Blur's Graham Coxon, Ash's Tim Wheeler & More To Write Music For Debut Feature From BAFTA Nominee Luke Snellin
You may not have heard of Luke Snellin, and that would make him one of the most talented and promising young filmmakers that you haven’t heard of. Don’t believe us? Watch some of his films, including "Disco" and "Mixtape" below, and you may just change your mind. It’s with a great deal of excitement then that we’re able to report on the news, via press release, that the BAFTA-nominated writer/director will soon be directing his debut feature. We may have another Rupert Wyatt/Joe Cornish/Richard Ayoade/[insert name of talented, young British director here] on our hands.

His debut will go by the name of “The Wanderers,” and will be a “non-conventional Brit Pop teen musical set in Colchester in 1996.” The story will follow a 16-year-old as he encounters sex and relationships for the first time as his band (the titular “The Wanderers”) strive to become the next big Brit Pop sensation.

Black Swan Soundtrack
The Black Swan soundtrack. There are many wondrously skilled musicians across the globe whose bands have dispersed before their time, who have not been fortunate enough to be in a Radiohead, or a Red Hot Chili Peppers, a Queens Of The Stone Age or a Green Day. No appearance on Cribs for them, few residual sales, sod all in the savings account, almost nothing of monetary value to show for five or eight or twelve years making records and being in magazines. For these musicians their creative life becomes back-story, and out of necessity they forge new careers – maybe in production like Ian Broudie (The Lightning Seeds) or in criticism like Andy Gill (Gang of Four). The vast majority fade away, go to work in suits and ties, open a vegetarian cafe or a bar, start a sub-par later-life band and tour provincial town halls, or, like the lead singer...

Russell Brand: '3 Lions is emotional'
Robbie Williams
Russell Brand has admitted that he was emotional after recording an updated version of '3 Lions'. The comic has teamed up with Robbie Williams, Trevor Horne and the original songwriters Frank Skinner, David Baddiel and Ian Broudie for a 2010 World Cup re-release of the popular hit. Speaking about the recording sessions, Brand told The Sun: "I was embarrassed by how emotional I felt singing this song. I nearly cried. It took me back to Euro '96 - Spice Boys, dentist's chairs and Gazza's last hurrah. "It's the only good England song and I look forward to singing it as we crash out on penalties. Then I will be crying." Robbie Williams added: "I've always been approached to (more)...
