Taylor Swift’s Fans at Edinburgh Concerts Danced So Hard, Seismic Activity Was Recorded
Image
To say Taylor Swift is shaking up the music industry is no metaphor. Last weekend, fans at her Edinburgh Eras Tour concerts danced so much that the British Geological Survey recorded seismic activity.

That’s right. And Friday’s 73,000-person crowd shook the earth the most, with monitoring stations detecting activity from 6 kilometers (3.73 miles) away.

Her most seismic hits at Murrayfield Stadium, the Bgs revealed, were “Shake It Off” (naturally), “…Ready for It” and “Cruel Summer.”

It was the first of 17 dates in the U.K. for the global superstar whose Eras Tour is projected to boost the country’s economy by 997 million pounds ($1.2 billion).

Lana Del Rey Lauds Taylor Swift Ahead of U.K. Tour: “She’s Told Me She Wants It More Than Anyone”
Image
Here in the U.K., Swiftmania is upon us: the pop superstar kicks off the first of 15 concerts in Britain on Friday night.

Projected to contribute a whopping 997 million pounds (or $1.26 billion) to the U.K. economy, Taylor Swift officially descends on Edinburgh as thousands flock to the Scottish capital, donning sparkles, handmade bracelets, and cowboy boots – the mark of the Eras Tour.

Her popularity has skyrocketed in recent years thanks to the re-record of her entire discography, including 1989, Red, and Speak Now – all Taylor’s Versions. The more recently released The Tortured Poets Department has made its way onto the setlist.

Ticket costs are in the thousands. The Pennsylvania-born star has sold out her shows worldwide. She is second only to The Beatles with the most weeks at number one on the Billboard 200. Everyone’s asking the same question: Why is she so popular? Her peers have an idea.

…Ready for It? Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour Projected to Boost U.K. Economy by 1 Billion Pounds
Image
Global superstar Taylor Swift is doing much more for British Swifties than just performing their favorite hits this summer – her Eras Tour is now also projected to boost the U.K. economy by nearly one billion pounds.

A new report from British bank Barclay’s says that Swift, who has just kicked off the European leg of her wildly popular tour (revamped to include the top tracks from her latest release, The Tortured Poets Department) will bring around 997 million pounds ($1.26 billion) into the U.K. economy thanks to fans spending an average of 848 pounds to see her live.

The “Swiftonomics” report also said that attending one of Swift’s 15 U.K. tour dates is expected to be more than 12 times the average cost of a U.K. night out (67 pounds) and even higher than the cost of a bachelor or bachelorette party (779 pounds).

But it isn’t just the tickets...

10 Directors to Watch: ‘Museo’ Auteur Alonso Ruizpalacios Leads New Wave of Mexican Talent
A few years from now, there will no doubt be an official name for the explosion of talented Mexican directors breaking through on the international festival circuit — filmmakers a generation younger than such Nuevo Cine Mexicano pioneers as Guillermo del Toro and Alfonso Cuaron, but every bit as promising in the originality of their vision.

When that time comes, Ruizpalacios could well be their poster boy: a helmer who’s making headway both as an arthouse auteur — his first two features, “Güeros” and “Museo,” premiered at the Berlinale — and a sought-after television director in the U.S., where he spearheaded the “Vida” pilot for Starz and two episodes of “Narcos: Mexico.”

Ruizpalacios’ film work reflects a bold vision, informed by his background in acting and avant-garde theater. “Unlike all my peers in drama school, I went into acting with directing in mind,” explains Ruizpalacios, who studied under Mexico City stage...
