Review: Bruce Robinson’s Cult Classic ‘Withnail and I’ on Criterion 4K Uhd Blu-ray
Image
As part of an essay cycle that roves the cinema of the 1990s for vestiges of intelligent life, Phillip Lopate identifies several attributes that typify the early style of writer turned directors: creatively interpolated exposition, admirably ham-fisted mise-en-scène, and skewedly erudite characters among them. The blistering dyad of movies that British author Bruce Robinson produced with HandMade Films in the late ’80s proudly manifests all of these, and adds one by way of aggressive underscoring: an acerbic worldview.

One can’t blame Lopate for overlooking this quality, as there’s nothing in the debuts of David Mamet or Paul Schrader on par with Robinson’s reckless piss and vinegar. House of Games and Blue Collar possess a crafty bleakness, to be sure, but a modern fable wherein the body of an advertising exec is commandeered by a sentient, puss-dribbling shoulder boil suggests unprecedented vocational spite. As with both Mamet and Schrader,...

MCU Canonically Refers to ‘Star Wars,’ And Somehow Nobody Noticed This Galaxy-Sized Plot Hole
Image
There aren’t too many things binding the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the Star Wars galaxy. Apart from the fact that the parent companies of both these IPs co-exist under the Walt Disney umbrella. But as anyone could tell, Lucasfilm and Marvel are far more connected than just through ownership.

Now, this isn’t as simple as a Death Star Easter egg in Spider-Man or a cheesy Obi-Wan Kenobi reference from Phil Coulson. Instead, we must look at something called the celebrity paradox.

When a character’s pop culture presence breaks through into other worlds because the actor exists in our minds as someone else from a different universe, that is a celebrity paradox. And no place is this paradox louder than two of Disney’s biggest franchises in the 21st century.

The MCU Spider-Man loves Star Wars, but that’s only the celebrity paradox Ned with the Lego Death...

'Withnail and I' Returns in a Big Way
Image
Two struggling actors living in far from perfect conditions in late 1960s London isn't that far from the truth for countless dreamers. 1987'sWithnail and I, directed by Bruce Robinson, gained cult status through its observant wit and darkly comical portrayal of the '60s countercultural movement winding down. Despite its initial modest success, the film grew in stature by word of mouth, in part through movie fans hosting viewing parties and quoting memorable dialogue.

Although the humor is distinctly British, the themes are universal, finely balancing comedy and melancholy. Director Bruce Robinson used his lived experience as a luckless actor in London to frame the film, and the chemistry between the leads, the great Richard E Grant and Paul MacGann, makes their dysfunctional companionship feel lived-in and real. Withnail and I has come back in a big way through a 4K release from The Criterion Collection, the first reissue of...

15 Most Chilling Quotes From David Fincher Movies
Image
2023's The Killer is the latest ice-cold thriller by director David Fincher. Over his 30-year career, Fincher has made a name for himself as an obsessive and precise creator of thrilling genre pieces. His approach of doing dozens and dozens of takes to find exactly what he's looking for has led to some describing his style as cold and robotic.

While it is true that this approach leads to his films lacking emotional warmth, it also gives them a stone-cold edge that few can replicate. As Fincher has worked with many different writers throughout the years, many of his characters share a sharp and intelligent wit, and most of his films can be characterized by an unfeeling perpetual danger. The dialogue these characters deliver can be equally chilling, cutting deep and precise, staying with a viewer long after the credits have rolled.

'I Want It to Be Kind of Creepy': Fight Club Director Reveals His Pitch for a Harry Potter Film
Image
David Fincher said he met with Warner Bros. to hash out ideas for the Harry Potter films. His pitch was far from the coming-of-age drama the studio wanted.

David Fincher would have added a Harry Potter to his eclectic filmography if Warner Bros. hired him. Speaking to Variety, the Gone Girl director said he had a very distinct concept for his Harry Potter film. "I was asked to come in and talk to them about how I would do Harry Potter," he confirmed. "I remember saying, 'I just don't want to do the clean Hollywood version of it. I want to do something that looks a lot more like Withnail and I, and I want it to be kind of creepy.'" A cult classic, Withnail and I is largely considered one of the all-time best British films.

'Alien', 'Alien 3', and 'Alien Resurrection' Leave Streaming on Hulu in December
Image
Bad news for fans who use the Hulu streaming service for all their Alien needs— most of the titles in the Ridley Scott-created franchise will be leaving the service in December. The Alien films have seen a resurgence recently, in no small part thanks to the recently released Alien: Romulus. Now, the iconic franchise will only remain complete on Hulu for another month, as Alien (1979), Alien 3 (1992), and Alien: Resurrection (1997) will be departing the service on December 31, 2024. Whether it is the cornerstone of horror that is the first Alien film, the controversial but compelling Alien 3, or the unconventional and twisted installment Alien: Resurrection, each entry is going to...

Alien 3 Was Almost A Reunion For This 92%-Rated Cult British Comedy
Image
Although Alien 3 remains perhaps the most divisive entry in the Alien movie franchise, one of the film's undoubted strengths is its stellar cast. Alongside series staple Sigourney Weaver, David Fincher's oft-maligned 1992 sequel features the likes of Charles S. Dutton, Pete Postlethwaite, and Lance Henriksen helping to elevate some of the movie's more questionable material. Yet while the final cast remains an imposing collection of acting talent, one casting decision prevented Alien 3 from becoming a reunion for a classic 1987 comedy.

Aside from Ripley herself, perhaps the most important character in the movie is Jonathan Clemens. Portrayed by Charles Dance (famous for his performance as Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones) Clemens is a tragic figure haunted by the demons of his past. While his battles with addiction resulted in his incarceration on Fiorina 161, he is an unmistakable ally for Ripley in an overtly hostile environment. However, central though...

Why Selling Sunset's Mary Fitzgerald Calls Amanza Smith's Custody Battle "Bittersweet"
Amanza Smith
After Amanza Smith's custody win, her Selling Sunset co-star Mary Fitzgerald is singing the mom of two's praises.  In September, Smith was granted sole legal and physical custody of her and ex-husband Ralph Brown's daughter Noah, 11, and son Braker, 10. The decision comes two years after Brown notified her that he "did not have the stability nor finances to keep the kids" and "never attempted to see them again," Smith alleged in court documents obtained by E! News. According to the court, Brown has not been involved in the custody case for two years. At the grand opening of Santa Monica store Saint Candles, benefiting St. Jude Children's Hospital, E! News, the Selling Sunset star was granted sole legal and physical custody of daughter Noah and son Braker during a legal hearing on Wednesday, Sept. 29.  The documents state that Amanza's ex-husband, Ralph Brown, did not appear in court for the custody hearing, nor has he been involved in the case for two years. In a statement to E! News, Amanza stated, "I'm relieved that this long process is over, it's been incredibly hard on me and especially the children." "We will never be 'over' the absence of their father," she continued, "but hopefully...

Selling Sunset's Amanza Smith Has "Good Idea" of Missing Ex's Whereabouts as She Files for Custody
Amanza Smith
Selling Sunset star Amanza Smith is asking for sole custody of her two children amid her ex-husband's apparent disappearance.  The 44-year-old real estate agent filed paperwork with the court on June 29 to request a change to her custody arrangement with former NFL player Ralph Brown for their children Noah, 11, and Braker, 10, as detailed in the document obtained by E! News on Wednesday, July 14. The current arrangement was put in place following their July 2015 divorce. In the filing, Amanza, who is seeking sole physical and legal custody, including the ability to approve his visitations, wrote that Ralph, 42, has not paid any child support in more than five years. Selling Sunset (2019)
Amid All the Drama on Selling Sunset, Let's Not Forget Amanza Smith and Her Missing Ex-Husband
Selling Sunset (2019)
Wait, back up a second. Amid all the drama that has come pouring forth from the third season of Netflix's Selling Sunset, almost buried underneath Chrishell Stause's divorce and Christine Quinn's grandiose wedding plans, there's the mystery of Amanza Smith's missing ex-husband. Referring to daughter Noah, 10, and son Braker, 8, the interior design specialist said on the show, "I feel like I'm gonna maybe have to get full custody of them," since she hasn't seen their father, former NFL player Ralph Brown, in a year. Then again, make that no one has seen Ralph Brown in a year. "About two months after my children's...

‘Gemini Man’ Review
Stars: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Benedict Wong, Clive Owen, Douglas Hodge, Ralph Brown, Linda Emond, Ilia Volok, E.J. Bonilla, Victor Hugo, David Shae | Written by David Benioff, Billy Ray, Darren Lemke | Directed by Ang Lee

Apparently a script that has been floating around Hollywood since 1997 and only now, I’m guessing with the availability of CGI technology, coming to the screen, Gemini Man tells the story of top-notch assassin Henry Brogan. One of the worlds, if not The, premier assassin. Only Henry wants to retire and we all know that government agencies can;’t just let great assets like Henry retire. Ever. Well they can if their dead… And that what Clive Owen’s Clay Verris wants to do. Kill Henry. Only to kill an assassin as good as Brogan you need an equally good assassin. And what better than a clone?

From the get-go you can’t help...

‘Gemini Man’ Film Review: Will Smith Gets to Play Two Dullards in Ridiculous Cloning Thriller
Darren Lemke
Darren Lemke sold his screenplay for “Gemini Man” back in 1997, and it has been cropping up in articles about great unmade films ever since. Unfortunately, the “Gemini Man” that Ang Lee has finally made has such risible dialogue, such perfunctory characterization, and such rudimentary international-espionage plotting that viewers will soon stop asking why it took so long to go into production, and start asking why it went into production at all.

Not that Lemke should shoulder all of the blame: Over the last two decades, his sci-fi story of a government assassin being hunted by his own younger clone has been revised extensively, and David Benioff and Billy Ray are also credited as screenwriters. Whatever adjustments were made to the screenplay along the way, they can’t have been improvements.

The main effect of the lengthy gestation is that “Gemini Man” now seems fatally dated and derivative. In the years since Lemke drafted his screenplay,...

Will Smith vs Will Smith in Second Trailer for Ang Lee's 'Gemini Man'
"Look what we created... You should be flattered." Paramount has debuted the second official trailer for Gemini Man, the next big movie made by Ang Lee (following Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk). The first trailer wasn't that impressive, but this second one amps things up and sets the stakes a bit better. This sci-fi action thriller is about an aging hitman, as played by Will Smith, who finds himself facing off against a younger clone of himself. A bit like Looper, but about a clone who doesn't realize he's a clone, and without any time travel. Lee shot this at 120Fps, also known as Hfr, but they're not mentioning this at all in the marketing anymore. The key visual effects are being handled by Weta Digital. The main cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, Benedict Wong, Linda Emond, Ralph Brown, and Theodora Miranne. This looks alright, and there's some...

Quick Behind-the-Scenes Featurette for Ang Lee's Sci-Fi 'Gemini Man'
"The concept of man being chased by himself – that's a really compelling idea for a story... Thanks to the technology, now it's possible." Paramount has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for Gemini Man, the next film from Ang Lee. The second trailer just dropped, so they're trying to keep us intrigued with this making of look at how they created a completely digital "younger" character for Will Smith to play off of. It touches upon the dual roles and how Smith shot this, but doesn't mention anything about Hfr or shooting at 120Fps. This sci-fi action thriller is about an aging hitman who finds himself facing off against a younger clone of himself. The visual effects are being done by Weta Digital. The cast also includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, Benedict Wong, Linda Emond, Ralph Brown, and Theodora Miranne. I don't think this is groundbreaking nor will it change cinema,...

First Trailer for Ang Lee's Sci-Fi Film 'Gemini Man' Starring Will Smith
"I think I know why he's as good as you - he Is you." Paramount has unveiled the first official trailer for Gemini Man, the next film from Ang Lee (following Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk). This sci-fi action thriller is about an aging hitman, as played by Will Smith, who finds himself facing off against a younger clone of himself. A bit like Looper, but about a clone, without any time travel. Lee shot this at 120Fps, also known as Hfr (High Frame-Rate) video, and is apparently still trying to push this aspect despite audiences rejecting Hfr during the release of The Hobbit a few years back. The visual effects are by Weta Digital. The feature cast includes Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen, Benedict Wong, Linda Emond, Ralph Brown, and Theodora Miranne. This looks intriguing so far, with some cool ideas and Will Smith being mean and young as...

The Original "Black Widow"
Take a look at actress Bridget Regan as 'Dottie Underwood', the original 1940's 'Black Widow' Russian superspy, who appeared in Season 2 of "Marvel's Agent Carter", starring Hayley Atwell:

"Oh, she's a slippery bitch," said Atwell about 'Black Widow'.

"We haven't seen the last of her. 'Peggy' has male baddies that she fights, but to have someone who is physically her equal -- she's a 'Black Widow', incredibly capable and very smart -- I think that shows some balance for Peggy, like a flip side of the same coin.

"You'll see more of her in Season 2."

In Season One, Dottie, a product of the 'Black Widow' program, worked alongside 'Dr. Ivchenko' (Ralph Brown) in order to locate a vial of 'Captain America' 'super-soldier' blood, obtained by 'Howard Stark' (Dominic Cooper)..."

‘Final Score’ Review
Stars: Dave Bautista, Pierce Brosnan, Ray Stevenson, Amit Shah, Martyn Ford, Kamil Lemieszewski, Ralph Brown, Lara Peake, Lucy Gaskell, Alexandra Dinu | Written by Jonathan Frank | Directed by Scott Mann

Dave Bautista’s solo action career continues its hot streak (see also: Bushwick) with Final Score, a ludicrous-but-fun Die Hard homage that sees the big man taking on terrorists at a football match in London. The film might have its flaws, but it delivers enough action-packed entertainment to ensure Bautista won’t be facing relegation anytime soon.

As established – albeit to outlandish extremes – in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, Bautista’s screen persona is essentially strong-but-sensitive, and he sticks closely to that template for his portrayal of Us military specialist Michael Knox, who arrives in London to visit the widow (Lucy Gaskell) and teenage daughter of his fellow soldier and best friend, who’s recently been killed in action.

Premiere Interviews: Dave Bautista on his action thriller Final Score
Last night, Guardians of the Galaxy star Dave Bautista was in London town for the premiere of his brand new movie Final Score which hits both cinemas and Sky Cinema 7th September.

Joining Dave on the red (football pitch) carpet were co-stars Amit Shah, Lara Peake, Martyn Ford and Director Scott Mann who previously worked with Bautista on their movie Heist.

During the interviews, the cast talk about what it was like working with such a wonderful man as Dave Bautista while Dave talks about working with 007 himself Pearce Brosnan in the movie.

Check out our interviews below and be sure to catch the movie in both cinemas and on Sky Cinema 7th September. The interviews were conducted by the awesome Scott Davis while Colin Hart was on camera duty (and got a bad neck while trying to film the absolutely huge Martyn Ford!).

35,000 lives. 90 minutes. No extra time.

Saban Films has released the full trailer for their upcoming action movie Final Score. The film stars Dave Bautista, Pierce Brosnan, and Ray Stevenson. It definitely looks like a badass action thriller worth checking out!

When a group of heavily armed criminals takes control of the stadium while it's packed with 35,000 spectators, ex-soldier Michael Knox (Bautista) is forced to use skills from his military background and everything at his disposal to save the hostages, including the life of a fallen comrade's daughter.

The film was directed by Scott Mann and written by Jonathan Frank, and brothers David T. Lynch and Keith Lynch.

Full Us Trailer for UK Action Movie 'Final Score' Starring Dave Bautista
"The clock is ticking... Tick, tock." Saban Films + Sky Cinema have released the full-length, official trailer for an action movie titled Final Score, from British director Scott Mann. After deadly terrorists abduct his niece at a soccer match, an ex-soldier with lethal fighting skills wages a one-man war to save her and prevent mass destruction. Dave Bautista stars in this, along with Pierce Brosnan, Ray Stevenson, Martyn Ford, Ralph Brown, Alexandra Dinu, and Lucy Gaskell. This reminds me a lot of the 90s action movie Sudden Death with Jcvd, also set in a stadium, and the filmmakers have admitted that was a major inspiration. This looks kind of awesome! No thanks to Bautista kicking ass, even though it seems cheesy but still fun. Some scores will never be settled. Here's the full-length Us trailer (+ UK poster) for Scott Mann's Final Score, direct from YouTube: You can still watch the...

Teaser Trailer For Dave Bautista and Pierce Brosnan's Action Thriller Final Score
Dave Bautista and Pierce Brosnan star in an upcoming new action thriller called Final Score. The movie is set in a football stadium in England. When a group of heavily armed criminals take control of the stadium while it's packed with 35,000 spectators, ex-soldier Michael Knox (Bautista) is forced to use skills from his military background and everything at his disposal to save the hostages, including the life of a fallen comrade's daughter.

The movie kind of reminds me of the 90s Jean-Claude Van Damme film Sudden Death where a group of terrorists are holding the Vice President and others hostage during the seventh game of the NHL Stanley Cup finals.

Final Score looks like it could be a fun action flick and I'll most likely end up watching it, because I like action movies! It also stars Pierce Brosnan, Ray Stevenson, Martyn Ford, Ralph Brown, Alexandra Dinu, and Lucy Gaskell.
