The annual St. Louis Jewish Film Festival has returned, again in a virtual format, March 6 -13 but shifted to a new spring season instead of its previous summer slot. Being virtual means all the exciting lineup of films, including documentaries on an array of subjects plus comedy and drama narrative films, are available to view anytime during the festival, through March 13, from the comfort of your own home. The 27th annual festival, which is virtual like the last two, has an array of 13 international and U.S. films with Jewish themes, with five outstanding documentaries on varied topics, and eight engrossing narrative features including dramas, comedies, historical films and thrillers, plus a trio of enticing discussions and a pre-festival bonus short film, “Touch the Sky,” which is available to stream starting Jan. 17.

The 24th Annual St. Louis Jewish Film Festival opens with two exciting films on Sunday, June 2nd at the Landmark Plaza Frontenac Cinema. The first film at 4:00Pm is called Carl Laemmle, a documentary film about the founder of Universal Pictures, a rags to riches story of a poor immigrant who became a Hollywood movie mogul and a man who saved 300 German Jewish families during the Holocaust.

The opening day continues at 7:00pm with Golda’s Balcony, The Film with special guest Dave Fishelson, and producer of the original Broadway production. Starring Tovah Feldshuh as Golda Meier, the film version of the Broadway play follows Golda’s journey from Russian immigrant to leader of international politics as Prime Minister of Israel.

The St. Louis Jewish Film Festival, held annually at the Landmark Plaza Frontenac Cinema, is one of the local Jewish community’s most popular and highly attended events of the year. Each year, the festival presents international Jewish films, both documentaries and features that explore universal issues through traditional Jewish values, opposing viewpoints and new perspectives. And each year, the fest packs ‘em in so get there early – it’s first come first serve for seats and those Frontenac theaters aren’t very big. Attendance is always through the roof for this thing, a testament to the group’s marketing and choice of programming. Guest lecturers are brought to the fest to discuss and illuminate the subjects of these films.
