“Houston, we have a problem”, five words that became a cultural landmark, stitched into the fabric of cinematic and historical lore. But here’s the rub: Jim Lovell never actually said them. The space icon, whose real-time heroism saved Apollo 13 from cataclysm, passed away on August 7 at the age of 97 in Lake Forest, Illinois, NASA confirmed. Lovell’s voice once danced between life and death above Earth’s atmosphere, yet it was Tom Hanks’ rephrased line in Ron Howard’s Apollo 13 that the world remembers.
The original line was “Ah, Houston, we’ve had a problem”. Well, screenwriter William Broyles Jr. admitted to tweaking the tense, swapping “we’ve had” for “we have” because, in his words, the original “wasn’t as dramatic” (per The Washington Post).
The reworked line gave audiences an active jolt of suspense. Broyles’ choice may have defied accuracy, but it was cinematic alchemy: the quote ranked No.

After discussing the 30 greatest war films of all time, we decided to keep the patriotic momentum going with another article based on a similar theme: The 15 best military movies. What's the difference? A war film such as "Saving Private Ryan" focuses on larger-scale historical or fictional conflicts, while a military picture centers on individual soldiers, operations, and specific missions, mostly set in the modern era. Often, these stories take a critical look at contemporary warfare and the dubious nature of many top-secret operations, political or otherwise.
Several pictures on this list are more personal in their approach to the controversial subject matter, allowing us to see the military's effects on the people pulling the trigger. Others blend sharp geopolitical commentary with edge-of-your-seat thrills. All are worth your attention and offer a captivating window into the lives of the men and women who serve. Apollo 13, NASA's third planned moon landing mission after Apollos 11 and 12, saw an extremely unlucky and nearly fatal problem become a triumphant display of human ingenuity. In April 1970, after suffering a catastrophic mechanical failure that rendered astronauts Jim Lovell, Fred Haise, and Jack Swigert unable to reach the moon, the three men were able to successfully turn around and land their stricken ship safely in the Pacific Ocean, leading NASA to dub the mission "a successful failure." Two and a half decades later, filmmaker Ron Howard accurately reenacted the harrowing NASA mission in his 1995 film Apollo 13, starring Tom Hanks as Lovell, which was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture.
Two years later, another embarrassing failure involving Apollo 13 (the film) would lead to an incredible success, when Reed Hastings found a VHS copy of Apollo 13 that he had borrowed from his local Blockbuster long ago and forgotten to return.

Quick Links Diane Lane Gives the Performance of a Lifetime in 'Unfaithful' 'Unfaithful' Powerfully Showcases How an Affair Can Destroy a Marriage
Halina Reijn's Babygirl represents an erotic thriller that explores the balance of power and sexuality as a professional high-ranking CEO, portrayed by Nicole Kidman, engages in a forbidden affair with a younger intern, played by Harris Dickinson. The director has said that some of her inspiration for the film was the psychosexual thrillers of the '80s and '90s from directors like Paul Verhoeven and Adrian Lyne.
It's fitting then that after a trip to see Babygirl, moviegoers should revisit Lyne's 2002 erotic thriller, Unfaithful. While the director is known more for his Oscar-nominated hits Fatal Attraction and Indecent Proposal, Unfaithful's simplicity, as it explores a woman's need for the excitement that she seems to be missing, is its biggest strength.

Santa's elves have become as integral to Christmas as the big man is. Much like St. Nick, the elves seem to have entered into the Yuletide mythos from a variety of places, including Norse Mythology, the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm, and mid-19th century literature. It was the introduction of electronic media, however, that further popularized elves, indelibly linking them to Santa Claus and Christmastime.
Over the decades, there have been dozens of movies and TV specials starring or featuring Santa Claus. Nearly all of them have included Santa's helpers, magical beings with a knack for toy making and abundant Christmas spirit. Typically, elves are little more than supporting characters. Yet sometimes, some of these enchanted helpers step into the spotlight. Over the years, some elves in popular movies have become about as iconic as Santa himself.

The 2000 film Cast Away still sits as one of the best showcases of Tom Hanks' acting, with him carrying almost the entire film by himself. However, one mystery still lingers over the movie: what was in the FedEx package Hanks' character refused to open on the island? While there's not much to go on, there are still theories based on hints scattered throughout the film.
The mysterious opening of the movie shows a FedEx van picking up a package from an artist's ranch. The box has a winged logo, which is also on one of the packages that wash up on the island with Hanks' character, Chuck Noland. Despite opening all other packages for resources, Chuck decides to keep this one package unopened. The 2000s were an incredible decade for filmmaking in general, but particularly for the war genre, which saw many modern classics being released. Many directors continued the traditions from the best war movies from generations past, pushing films about war to their limits with grand action sequences and intimate personal narratives on the battlefields. War films, by nature, lend themselves to epic, action-filled tales that feature some of the best and worst characteristics of human behavior and psychology.
Some of the best war films of all time were released in the 2000s, such as the haunting The Pianist and the captivating Inglourious Basterds, both of which represent how unique and different films in this genre can be. Robert Zemeckis has had a long and exemplary career as a director since he is responsible for multiple classics. With other similar survival movies drawing from real-life events, there is some question if Cast Away is based on a true story. The movie follows the story of FedEx executive Chuck Noland (Hanks) as he's stranded on a deserted island in the middle of the South Pacific after a plane crash. Movies like 127 Hours and Adrift deal with the accounts of real people who faced impossible odds to survive, but Cast Away is more fiction than either of these movies. Nevertheless, there are many real-life experiences that influence the movie.

Robert Zemeckis 2000 masterpiece Cast Away was unlike any other survival film in history, as it explored the unique mindset of a person as they experience the trauma of loneliness. Tom Hanks had played many different American heroes by the time he appeared in the film, but his role as FedEx analyst Chuck Noland proved to be one of his most challenging, as it nearly claimed his life. Hanks may have earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for his work in the film, but the real star of Cast Away ended up being the volleyball Wilson, who Chuck communicates with after he is marooned on a desert island in the Pacific Ocean. Survival movies based on true stories provide a glimpse into impossible situations that real people have faced and overcome. Some films stick closely to the truth, while others add drama or fictional elements to enhance the story. These movies can be difficult to watch but are also inspiring, revealing the power of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
One of the most stressful of genres, survival movies based on true stories take viewers inside what looks to be an impossible situation, made worse by the fact that it happened to someone in real life before it was ever made into a movie. The world is a dangerous place, but there are amazing stories of humans surviving against the odds and many of these have become great movies. From sinking ships and tsunamis to being trapped in the wilderness, there are many true stories worth being put on the big screen.

It sometimes feels like "Cast Away" doesn't get as much love as it deserves. It's certainly well-regarded by both critics and audiences, but it almost seems a bit forgotten. Yes, it still airs on cable pretty regularly, but it's not a film that comes up in day-to-day cinema conversation often. After all, when people talk about the best Tom Hanks movies and performances, they tend to go right to films like "Philadelphia," "Saving Private Ryan," and "Forrest Gump," when the best performance of his career may very well have been as Chuck Noland in "Cast Away." Considering the fact he spends most of the movie completely isolated, and his primary scene partner is a volleyball, the movie is a testament to his star power and acting talent.
And as great as Hanks was in the film, and as satisfying (and wildly successful) a film as "Cast Away" wound up being,...

John Sacret Young, the author and producer best known for his work on “China Beach” and “The West Wing,” died on June 3 after a 10-month battle with brain cancer. He was 75.
Young co-created “China Beach” with William Broyles Jr., serving as executive producer and showrunner on the much-lauded show about American combat nurses during the Vietnam War. Young received five Emmy and four Writers Guild Award nominations for his work on the ABC drama series, which ran from 1988-91, with star Dana Delany receiving two Emmy trophies and co-star Marg Helgenberger winning one. Young served as a mentor to many young crew members and took pride in elevating women’s careers behind the camera despite the overt and implicit sexism of the time.

A lot went behind Tom Hanks' Oscar-Nominated Cast Away. For starters, it took screenwriter William Broyles Jr. six years to shape the film's well-crafted drama. Moreover, the film's shooting was halted for an entire year so that Tom Hanks could lose 50 pounds for his mid-runtime transformation. All things considered, it isn't surprising that it grossed $429,632,142 worldwide on a $90 million budget.

In this edition of Canon Of Film, we take a look back at Ron Howard‘s ‘Apollo 13’ in honor of ‘Solo‘ and ‘Arrested Development‘ season 5.
Apollo 13 (1995)
Director: Ron Howard
Screenplay: William Broyles Jr. and Al Reinert based on the book “Lost Moon,” by Jim Lovell and Jeffrey Kluger
For some reason, certain films are almost too familiar for me to talk about well. Even great films. ‘Apollo 13‘, in America anyway, is one of those films for a lot of people, me included. A few films are like this, that they ingrain so much of the best of Americana that they almost exist outside of their greatness as a film. In fact, when they are so ingrained, the greatness of a film, sometimes gets overshadowed. It’s almost impossible to see the amazing technical achievements now, partially because they’re hidden in plain sight so brilliantly, recreating images and of 1970 space technology,...

Initially, the miniseries was set to star “True Blood” alum Joe Manganiello, but the actor had to remove himself from the series due to health issues. It isn’t news when Lesli Linka Glatter earns another Emmy nomination for directing “Homeland” (Showtime) — this time, she’s gotten two, as well as sharing Best Drama with showrunners Alex Ganza and Howard Gordon and the other executive producers.
From the start, Glatter has deployed the rigorous discipline she learned from being a modern dance choreographer to meticulously preparing everything she does, from storyboards to character analysis.
