Netflix Cancels Comedy Series After Season 2 Finale Went Political
Image
Netflix is pulling the plug on another series after a two-season run. The decision comes nearly three months after the second season dropped on the streaming platform.

Per Variety, Netflix has canceled Unstable after two seasons. The workplace comedy series, which co-starred Rob Lowe and his real-life son, John Owen Lowe, originally premiered on Netflix in March 2023. Season 2 debuted on Aug. 1, and the future of the series has since been unclear. The show getting the boot means that the big political cliffhanger in the finale will not be resolved.

Rob Lowe’s Netflix Comedy ‘Unstable’ Names Andrew Gurland New Showrunner As Season 2 Heads Back Into Production
Image
Unstable, the Netflix comedy starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, is heading back into production for its second season with a new showrunner.

Andrew Gurland, creator of FX’s Married, has replaced Victor Fresco as showrunner for the second season of the series after its renewal by Netflix for another eight episodes.

Production will begin later this month after it was interrupted by the writers strike back in May. Production on the second season started in late March and shut down at the start of May.

Unstable follows an introverted son (John Owen Lowe) who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father (Rob Lowe) in order to save him and his successful biotech company from disaster. It is inspired by Rob and John Owen Lowe’s social media relationship, in which John Owen often humorously trolls his dad.

‘Unstable’: Season 2 Of Rob Lowe & John Owen Lowe’s Netflix Comedy Series Shut Down Due To Writers Strike
Image
Exclusive: Unstable, the Netflix comedy series starring Rob Lowe and his son John Owen Lowe, is the latest show to have production hit by the writers strike.

Deadline understands that production on the second season of the series, which launched at the end of March, has been shut down.

We hear that the series, which hadn’t received a full, official renewal greenlight, was prepping at Sunset Gower Studios in Hollywood. There were six scripts finished out of a planned eight-episode run with principal photography planned for later this spring. Employees were told earlier this week that production was being suspended and that they were being laid off at the end of the week.

Unstable is the latest scripted series shut down; Deadline revealed that NBC comedy Night Court is shutting down its second season and shows such as Netflix’s Cobra Kai, Starz’ Power Book III: Raising Kanan, Showtime...

‘Unstable’ Throws Together Rob Lowe and Son John Owen Lowe in a Surprisingly Charming Sitcom: TV Review
Image
The conversation about “nepo babies” has grown tiresome — and not just because “nepo baby” itself is such an unattractive turn of phrase. The general outrage over the idea that children of famous actors find themselves drawn to acting, ginned up by an artfully provocative recent cover story in New York magazine, has tended to elide the simple fact that said children often find themselves acting because they share talents with their parents, who are famous for good reason.

So it is with John Owen Lowe, who seems like a slightly altered carbon copy of his father Rob, with the smarm ironed out. Together, they’re headlining “Unstable,” a new Netflix comedy that’s infuriatingly better than it needed to be. Lowes père and fils share executive producer credits with Victor Fresco and Marc Buckland, two creatives with long comedy résumés. And what might have been expected to look like a...

Mockingbird Lane Will Air as One Hour Special
It’s a good news/bad news report. Unfortunately, the bad news is that NBC has now confirmed that Mockingbird Lane, the Bryan Fuller-written-and-produced re-imagining of The Munsters, will not be produced as a series. The somewhat good news is that we don’t lose everything; the one hour pilot has been refashioned into a special, to air the Friday before Halloween.

Mr. Fuller himself tweeted this upbeat interpretation:

#Mockingbirdlane Lives!

— Bryan Fuller (@BryanFuller) October 11, 2012

It is perhaps a remote possibility that, should the special do well, the series still could become a reality, but that is wild speculation. Here’s the press release, which also details the episode of Grimm that will follow the special, and which will feature a Latin American folk tale:

NBC Stirs Up Creepy Cauldron For Halloween With A Fright Night Featuring One-hour Pilot Of ‘Mockingbird Lane’ Leading Into Haunting Episode Of ‘Grimm’ On...

Trailers and Clips for a Ton of New Shows on NBC
NBC has released a bunch of trailers and clips for a new collection of TV series that they have been developing. We've got stuff from 1600 Penn, Infamous, Save Me, Next Caller, Do No Harm, The New Normal, Guys With Kids, and Go On. It will be interesting to what shows make it and what shows end up on the chopping block. Check out the trailers and clips and let us know which ones look good to you!

1600 Penn:

“1600 Penn” — The Gilchrists are just the average American family dealing with all the everyday issues – like a grown kid who’s forced to move back home, children who are smarter than their teachers and a stepmom (Jenna Elfman, “Dharma and Greg”) desperately trying to win over the kids. They’re loving, fun and a little crazy. In other words, just like everybody else. With one exception: they live in a very special house.

New TV Season Breakdown: NBC
The Fall TV Season presentations for all the new network shows take place this week with the first announced today. Here's a full breakdown of which concepts have made the final list over on NBC.

With only a few shows from last season still sticking around (and none of them hits really), NBC is betting big on comedy this year to sit alongside its football and "The Voice" broadcasts. In fact though its ordered five new dramas, only two of those will be premiering in the Fall with the rest of the schedule filled out with either returning shows or new comedies.

"The Munsters" reboot "Mockingbird Lane" remains in development for a possible mid-season launch. Several other pilots didn't make the final cut and won't be seen, the most galling of which is the Alaskan-set conspiracy mystery thriller "Midnight Sun" with Julia Stiles and Titus Welliver. Also missing out were...

Deanna Russo in Do No Harm (2012)
NBC's 2012-2013 Schedule: 'Community' Moves To Fridays, Plus Preview New Shows
Deanna Russo in Do No Harm (2012)
In advance of their official Upfronts presentation on Monday, NBC jumped the gun to be the first network to unveil their complete 2012-2013 schedule on Sunday.

The biggest story? "Community" is moving to Fridays, along with sophomore sitcom "Whitney," which will kick off that rather random new night of programming.

"Smash" is also being bumped -- all the way to midseason -- to make way for the premiere of "Revolution," a new thriller from J.J. Abrams and Eric Kripke, which will air after "The Voice" on Mondays. And yes, that means "The Voice" will be back in the fall, giving it two cycles a year, as predicted.

NBC will also try their hand at airing comedies on Tuesday nights, with Matthew Perry's "Go On" and Ryan Murphy's "Th New Normal" getting paired together.

Also being saved for midseason are new sitcoms "Save Me," "1600 Penn" and "Next Caller," and new dramas "Do No Harm,...
