It’s a Shame James Cameron Still Hasn’t Cast Ben Stiller in Avatar After He Turns Into a Na’vi at Oscars
Image
James Cameron’s Avatar 3 will make its way to the cinemas this December, and with its star-studded cast, many fans might still be wondering why comedian Ben Stiller is not yet a part of the project, especially after he transformed himself into a Na’vi at the 2010 Oscars event.

James Cameron / Credits: CTV News

His amazing makeup at the said event definitely warrants him a place in the movie, but of course, it was only a way to pay homage to Cameron’s highly successful franchise as well as add some fun during that night’s awarding ceremony.

Ben Stiller’s hilarious and unforgettable Avatar spoof at the Oscars

Ben Stiller surprised the crowd at the 82nd Academy Awards in 2010 when he came out from the backstage wearing a black suit while sporting a Na’vi makeup. His iconic stare, which lasted for a couple of seconds, immediately sent the audience laughing out loud.

Combined, the Star Trek films have won just one Oscar
Image
The 2025 Academy Award nominations have been announced after delays caused by the devastating fires in Los Angeles, and the numerous nods got us thinking about how the Star Trek movies have fared at the Oscars. And the answer is… terribly. Not counting Section 31, which can be classified as a telemovie, there are 13 features spanning from The Motion Picture in 1979 to Beyond in 2016. Together, they have been nominated for a grand total of 16 Oscars, all in tech or makeup categories. And they've won exactly one Oscar. You read that right. One Oscar.

And the Oscar went to Barney Burman, Mindy Hall, and Joel Harlow, who triumphed in the Best Makeup category for their work on Star Trek (2009). Interestingly, Star Trek (2009) accounted for a full quarter of all of the Star Trek franchise’s Oscar nominations, as it was also up for Best Visual Effects, Best Sound, and Best Sound Editing.

There's Only One Star Trek Movie With An Oscar Win
Image
To date, there have been 13 "Star Trek" feature films, with a 14th movie, "Section 31," scheduled to debut on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. The films are, many Trekkies would agree, various degrees of good and bad. Some of the "Star Trek" films are among the best sci-fi movies ever made, while others are handily the worst. Many agree that Nicholas Meyer's 1982 film "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" is the best one, although J.J. Abrams' 2009 "Star Trek" is the highest-grossing. The four films based on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" -- that is: "Generations," "First Contact," "Insurrection," and "Nemesis" -- are all pretty middling, although many like the Borg action from "First Contact." My personal favorites are Robert Wise's 1979 epic "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," for its cerebral grandiosity, and Meyer's "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country" for its political bent.

The films also fluctuate wildly in mere production quality.

Singapore: Barney Burman, Make-up Ace, Aspires to Meisner-Like Authenticity
Barney Burman
“It is always my goal to create a layer of truth for actors with my make-ups and suits,” said Academy Award winning make-up effects Artist Barney Burman. He was speaking on Saturday at an onstage event within the Singapore International Film Festival.

The presentation at the Project theater was moderated by Singaporean filmmaker Kirsten Tan (“Pop Aye”), who probed Burman on the extent that he had been influenced by legendary acting teacher Sanford Meisner. The so-called “Meisner Technique” suggests that acting is living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.

The make-up wiz, whose credit includes multiple Hollywood studio blockbusters such as the “Star Trek” franchise, “Tropic Thunder” and “Mission Impossible 3,” had studied with legendary teacher Sanford Meisner as a character actor.

“[With make-ups and suits] you get a different look, different persona and different physicality. Actors’ performances do change with those make-ups,” Burman explained. “There was this one time my team did a four-hour long old-age make-up.

Wild Boar Trailer: Bloodthirsty Pig Mutants Want to Turn You Into Bacon
Barney Burman
Wild Boar is an upcoming horror film from Academy Award winning special effects & character creation artist, Barney Burman. The movie is Burman's directorial debut and it's sure to pique the interest of horror and sci-fi enthusiasts everywhere. Wild Boar follows a small group of treasure seekers, also known as "Geocachers," who trek into to the desert to conquer a Geocache Challenge. Out in the wild they stumble upon a forbidden world flooded with radiation and inhabited by a race of bloodthirsty mutants who have evolved from pigs.

The Wild Boar trailer features tight spaces and quick edits that give it a claustrophobic feel, which only adds to the tension. Sand traps and water escapes are also teased, leaving the mutant human/pig hybrids a mystery. They are shown, albeit briefly, and that's what will draw viewers in. Unsuspecting party guests find out the hard way that Davenport House is home to a vengeful spirit in The Haunting of Alice D. With the new horror film now out on DVD and Digital from Rlj Entertainment, we caught up with Jessica Sonneborn in our latest Q&A feature to discuss her experiences writing, directing, and co-starring in the The Haunting of Alice D, working with Kane Hodder, and much more.

Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Jessica. How did you come up with the idea for your new film, The Haunting of Alice D?

Jessica Sonneborn: I wanted to create a “cabin in the woods” style horror movie with a major twist that made it unique from other films like it. I was trying to think of something that could be done on a shoestring budget, but that also had some depth to it.

'Batman v Superman' Featurette Shows How Zod's Body Was Made
Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
For the blockbuster Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Adi created two ultra-realistic replicas of the deceased General Zod that would withstand close scrutiny by a camera lense. Fitness trainer Greg Plitt came to Adi for us to lifecast his body from the neck down while our colleague Barney Burman loaned us a headcast of actor Michael Shannon. Once the Shannon headcast was copied both the head and body were run in silicone with a polyfoam fill to make them solid. Tony Matijevich, Brian Clawson, and Tim Leach created both Zod bodies. Denise Baer punched hair; Mike Larrabee painted both Zods. You can check out the whole process in this cool new video,

Following his titanic struggle against General Zod, Metropolis has been razed to the ground and Superman is the most controversial figure in the world. While for many he is still an emblem of hope, a growing number...

'Guardians of the Galaxy' leads Makeup and Hairstylists Guild nominations
Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldaña, and Dave Bautista in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014)
This is the second year for the Makeup and Hairstylists Guild joining the awards game, and they've been a welcome addition to the circuit. They spread their nods thin across a number of categories, but it's a good window into what this branch digs, for sure. This year, the only two films on the Academy's bake-off list of finalists that didn't garner any recognition were "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" and "Noah." Meaning "Foxcatcher," "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Guardians of the Galaxy," "Maleficent" and "The Theory of Everything" were each represented in one form or another. Meanwhile, "Guardians of the Galaxy" led with the most mentions at three, while "The Grand Budapest Hotel," "Interstellar" and "Into the Woods" each got a pair. As previously announced, Oscar-winning make-up artist Rick Baker and Emmy-nominated hair stylist Kathryn Blondell will receive the Guild's Lifetime Achievement Awards. Voodoo Possession (2014)
“Voodoo Possession” Actor Ryan Caltagirone Talks Horror, Danny Trejo & Barney Burman!
Voodoo Possession (2014)
Voodoo has always been a creepy subject, and a popular choice for horror films, perhaps most notably with the classic (and first) White Zombie, starring Bela Lugosi as an evil voodoo master. Now, the misunderstood religion finds itself in the spotlight once again, with FX’s hit American Horror Story: Coven. But that’s not the only horror property delving into the Haitian religion. Allow me to introduce you to Walter Boholst’s horror film Voodoo Possession, out today, January 14th, on VOD platforms. Despite the over the top name, the film actually has complicated themes (and Danny Trejo), and isn’t a straight riff on the wacky voodoo doll tropes of bad horror movies. I recently got a chance to talk with actor and star Ryan Caltagirone (The Flip Side, The Big Year), who plays the tortured protagonist Aiden Chase in the film.

See Grimm's David Giuntoli Transform into a Zombie and Get Some Season 3 Scoops
So many juicy spoilers for "Grimm" Season 3 have come out this week that we hope there are still a few left for next Saturday's San Diego Comic-Con panel! We have all the info here along with a look at series star David Giuntoli's zombie transformation.

The "Grimm" season finale saw a zombified Nick (Giuntoli) being shipped off to Europe in a coffin, and executive producer Jim Kouf told TV Guide we shouldn't expect a quick fix or a fast rescue for our hero. "If Nick does survive this zombie state, he's going to be very dangerous," says Kouf. "There will be residual effects that will change him in a huge way."

Meanwhile in Portland, the still-clueless Sergeant Wu (Reggie Lee) sees too much in his first direct encounter with a Wesen and goes a bit psycho. Hank (Russell Hornsby) falls deeply for his physical therapist — also a Wesen — and...

First Look: Grimm's Nick Turns Zombie! Plus: a Season 3 Wedding!
There will be damage. The Grimm season finale saw a zombified Nick (David Giuntoli) being shipped off to Europe in a coffin — presumably to become a pawn in the Royal Families' quest for world domination —but don't expect some quick fix or a fast rescue by his Scooby Gang when the NBC series returns (Friday, Oct. 25 at 9/8c). "If Nick does survive this zombie state, he's going to be very dangerous," says executive producer Jim Kouf. "There will be residual effects that will change him in a huge way."

TV Guide Magazine has your exclusive first look at Giuntoli in zombie-mode, created by makeup artist Barney Burman, an Oscar winner for J.J. Abrams's Star Trek.

In other Season 3 scoop, back home, the still-clueless Sergeant Wu (Reggie Lee) sees too much in his first direct encounter with a Wesen and goes a bit psycho. Hank (Russell Hornsby) falls deeply for...

Iatse Local 706 Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild celebrates 75th Anniversary
We love the makeup artists and hairstylists here at Monsters and Critics. Where would NBC's "Grimm" be without Barney Burman, Stephen Bettles and company? Or Nick's "iCarly" and "Victorious" without Michael Johnston, Patti Brand, Maria Valdivia and Melanie Mills? Or ABC's "Once Upon a Time" without the work of Debra Wiebe and Sarah Graham? Not to mention the film greats for the craft, Oscar winners like Bill Corso, Ve Neill, Howard Berger and Greg Cannom? It's time to celebrate all the hardworking folks who make the characters come to life and aid the actors in their transformation, as the Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild will celebrate 75 years. From the press release: The Make-Up Artists...

Dear Zachary: Exclusive Interview with Kurt Kuenne
If you haven’t seen, or heard of, Dear Zachary- and sadly, the chances of that are quite high- then you simply must watch it. It is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen, and definitely the most emotionally devastating- it is more effective and powerful that Catfish, Fahrenheit 9/11, The Cove or even The Imposter. Perhaps the reason it is so is because its director, Kurt Kuenne, was at the heart of the documentary- the subject of the documentary, the late Dr. Andrew Bagby, was Kuenne’s close friend- Bagby was murdered by his ex, also the mother of his son, Zachary. The documentary serves not only as a tribute to Andrew by those who knew him best, but also a harrowing portrait of how Andrew’s murderer escaped justice.

Kuenne is an eclectic and talented guy- in addition to directing documentaries like Drive-In Movie Memories and feature films such as Scrapbook,...

A Chat With Barney Burman On “Grimm”
David Giuntoli in Grimm (2011)
Fangoria got a chance to sit down and talk with Barney Burman, the makeup designer and creator for Grimm, who’s in charge of the many monsters that Nick, Monroe and company have to track down. In the interview, he talks about Lon Chaney Jr., and the Burman makeup dynasty, his career and the show’s monsters. It’s good stuff, so I just brought you the good stuff. If you want the full article, go here:

In charge of these shocking sights is Burman, one of the Burman makeup dynasty: “My dad’s dad made the prosthetic nose and the cane for The Wolf Man with Lon Chaney Jr., and made the pieces for Jack Pierce.” Although it’s where he wound up, Burman says he didn’t initially plan to enter the family business. “When I was a kid, I wanted to be Lon Chaney; I wanted to...

Two More Preview Clips from Grimm Season 1 on Blu-ray/DVD; Another Sneak Peek of Season 2
"Grimm" Season 1 hits Blu-ray/DVD August 7th, and to make sure we leave no stone unturned regarding this release, here are two more bonus clips from the set. And that's not all - we also have a new promo in which the cast members offer a few hints of what's coming in Season 2!

EW provided the new promo and a bit more info on Season 2: It picks up right where the first season finale left off — with Det. Grimm Season One DVD Details Released
The dust has barely settled on the 2011-2012 television season, but the studios are already gearing up the season box sets in anticipation of the fall premieres. NBC’s hit fantasy TV show Grimm is a blend between classic fairy tales and a modern police procedural.
