Not unlike Don Burnett's father Albert John Burnett who served in World War I in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, Don also became involved with the military, the American forces, graduating from the Army Officer Candidate Division on November 8, 1952, Class No. 52, Commissioned at Fort Riley, Kansas, as Lt. Donald J. Burnett.
