With The Handmaid’s Tale series finale not really being the end of the entire story of Gilead, it wasn’t surprising to find out that Naomi Putnam-Lawrence had remained behind. However, she did do a good thing, showing a sign that she knew Gilead wasn’t a safe place for girls. As Janine was returned to the Americans, Naomi brought Charlotte back as well. Yes, Charlotte, not Angela!
It’s a sign that Naomi realizes that there are a lot of issues with Gilead, especially for girls. Her marriage to Lawrence arguably helped her change her views a little, although she still often proved that she believed in Gilead now and then. Her actions were more likely in memory of Lawrence, especially as she is now twice a widow and likely going to struggle herself in Gilead. She won’t want Charlotte taken from her, so it’s safer handing her to Janine.

We all have that kids' movie that terrified us, but sometimes, the spook factor is more subtle and atmospheric than truly scary. This is the case with 1993's The Secret Garden, based on the 1911 Frances Hodgson Burnett novel of the same name. Directed by Agnieszka Holland, the film stars Kate Maberly as the novel's protagonist, Mary Lennox, and British icon Maggie Smithplays a crucial supporting role. Weaving together the enchanting beauty of nature with themes of loneliness, grief, and nostalgia,The Secret Garden is a haunting visual delight that speaks to the melancholy in all of us. And if you haven't seen the film yet, watch it before reading on, as the following contains spoilers.

Rising star Minha Kim unveils her first lead performance since breaking out in AppleTV+’s prestige drama series Pachinko, playing a young woman accused of murdering a best-selling author in Chun Sun-young’s feature debut A Girl with Closed Eyes. Premiering at the Busan International Film Festival, the yarn unspools as a polished crime thriller bolstered by a raft of strong performances, not least from Kim and Choi Hee-seo, but ultimately let down by some wildly implausible plotting.
Set in South Korea’s provincial mountain region of Hongcheon, A Girl with Closed Eyes opens as a young woman calling herself Min-ju (Kim) is caught, smoking gun literally in hand, standing over the bloodied corpse of celebrated writer Jeong Sang-woo (Lee Ki-woo). Taken in for questioning, she claims that Jeong was responsible for an unsolved kidnapping case from 20 years earlier that serves as the inspiration for his hit novel. She also...

Like most people without easy access to the West End and Broadway, I did not get the full measure of Dame Maggie Smith's genius as a performer. This is true of many great actors who found their way to film and television from the boards, and it is why I am often reluctant to enter arguments over or make lists ranking the greatest actors of all time. Theatrical performance requires a flexing of radically different muscles; you must fill the space, or recede from it, or mingle harmoniously within it without the emotive aid of close-ups and cutting. And you must play each role every night for weeks upon weeks (upon weeks should the show become a hit) while remaining in moments that cannot be manufactured – because an astute audience (and they'd better be good and goddamn astute given what they're paying to see a show in either of...

Generally, if a movie is set in England, it will take place in the capital city of London. London is home to 8,000,000 people and houses most of the well-known UK landmarks: Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, the Shard, and so on. It's not surprising that it's such a popular location for filmmakers.
However, Britain is much bigger than London alone, and movies that come out of the country reflect this. While big blockbuster movies tend to stick to London, other areas of Britain have more personal and intricate stories told about them. They have the added effect of teaching people about lesser-known areas of the United Kingdom.

DreamWorks has plans for more Shrek movies, as evidenced by the success of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The ending of Shrek Forever After set up potential sequels, prequels, and spinoffs with the introduction of various books on Shrek's bookshelf. The success of the Puss in Boots spinoff confirms that each book on Shrek's bookshelf could potentially be adapted into its own movie.
More movies in the Shrek franchise are sure to come, but the series already set up multiple sequels, prequels, and spinoffs 14 years ago. DreamWorks finally gave audiences a chance to return to the land of Far Far Away and Shrek's world in 2022 with Puss in Boots: The Last Wish's ending. The film's success proved that there is still plenty of interest in seeing new adventures from Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Puss in Boots, and others. The Secret Garden explores themes of health, positivity, and the magic of nature, making it a universally beloved novel with numerous adaptations. Dickon is an important character in the story, described as a kind-hearted young boy who has a deep connection with the natural world. The role of Dickon has been portrayed by five different actors in various screen adaptations, each bringing their own unique interpretation to the beloved character.
Dickon in The Secret Garden is one of the key characters of the classic novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. The 1911 novel follows 10-year-old Mary Lennox, a wealthy and spoiled British girl who is sent to live on her uncle's estate, Misselthwaite Manor. There in Yorkshire, her sour attitude softens as she learns to appreciate the countryside and the kind staff members who live there. Mary soon learns of a locked and secret garden on the grounds, and it's there she discovers the beauty of nature.

Serious movie directors have found success in making children's movies, such as Joe Wright with "Pan" and Wes Anderson with "Fantastic Mr. Fox." These directors often bring their own unique style and storytelling techniques to kids' movies, like Anderson's symmetry and blend of storytelling and visual aesthetics.
While there are many directors whose work is mostly aimed at a young audience, there are some serious movie directors who have made great kids’ movies. The field of children’s movies is a broad but tricky one, as while it gives a lot of creative opportunities for filmmakers, making a successful kids' movie isn’t an easy task. Various filmmakers have dedicated their entire careers to mostly making family-friendly content aimed at children, such as Hayao Miyazaki and Brad Bird, while there are others who have paid a visit to this area without making it the focus of their careers.

The genre of graphic novels is growing quickly as more readers find niches that interest them. Publishers are adapting more stories to get readers' attention. Included in these adaptations are classic books that are known to be cornerstones of literature.
These new versions of these tales show them in a new light, as many never included any artwork beyond their covers. They allow readers who may not enjoy the original format to explore the stories in a new way and find something they genuinely enjoy. While adaptations are becoming more abundant, readers need a place to start when it comes to expanding the classic novel to graphic novel library.

Lucy Simon, a Tony-nominated Broadway composer best known for “The Secret Garden” and the older sister of pop singer Carly Simon, died Thursday following a long battle with breast cancer. She was 82.
Her family said she died at her home in Piedmont, New York.
Simon was only the third female composer to have a production on Broadway with “The Secret Garden,” a musical based on the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett. She composed the music with the book and lyrics by Marsha Norman.
In 1991 “The Secret Garden” was nominated for six Tony Awards, including nominations for Best Original Score for Simon and Norman, winning two. The musical ran for 709 performances on Broadway.

New York designers learned several lessons from the Covid-19 pandemic, not only in how to sustain a luxury-focused fashion business amid a global lockdown, but also the importance of making choices wholly rooted in personal fulfillment versus a paramount concern about the bottom line. And if a contented designer equals a commercially successful collection, perhaps that’s no accident.
That’s how both Brandon Maxwell and Carolina Herrera creative director Wes Gordon approached the Spring/Summer 2023 collections they debuted this week. Gordon’s presentation at The Plaza exuded an unabashed joy in each of its elements, from its iconic New York location to its spotlight on bright floral prints — a theme inspired by the 1911 Frances Hodgson Burnett novel The Secret Garden — and especially the show’s soundtrack, a mix of Barbra Streisand’s most exuberant Broadway and cinema hits.

Veteran actress Julie Walters says sharing screen space with young actress Dixie Egerickx in The Secret Garden was not like working with another child in a lot of ways.
Praising the 15-year-old Egerickx, who plays Mary Lennox in the film, Walters, 70, said, "Dixie is extraordinary, she is incredibly bright, she is a really good actress! It would be interesting to see whether she chooses acting later or what she will choose because she is clearly adept at most things."
"It's not like working with another child in a lot of ways, you can have proper chats. I mean we have been discussing Donald Trump and all sorts," she added.

A thousand embroidery hoops, T-shirts and posters on Etsy regularly remind us that well-behaved women rarely make history. On the British High Street and in daily life, by contrast, little girls are assailed by messages telling them to sparkle, be kind and smile. So how do girls learn to stop sparkling and start behaving badly? They find role models; in music, in their friendship circles, on the big and small screen and between the pages of their favourite books.
Frances Hodgson Burnett’s The Secret Garden featured one such role model. An audaciously rude girl called Mary Lennox who, we learn, by six years old was “as tyrannical and selfish a little pig as ever lived”. Young readers, and the grown-ups they became, have long been enchanted by Mary’s evolution from brat to heroine and the healing powers of the hidden garden she seeks refuge in, which changes the lives of everyone who enters.

While the school holidays are giving ticket sales a modest uplift, the crisis for Australian cinemas shows no signs of abating, at least until Boxing Day.
The decision by MGM, Universal and James Bond producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli to shift the global release of No Time to Die from November to April 2021 is the latest blow to product-starved exhibitors.
The fourth quarter schedule looks threadbare after Disney decided to premiere Pixar’s Soul on Disney+ on December 25 and moved Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile to January 7 and Marvel’s Black Widow to April. Meanwhile Warner Bros. booted Denis Villeneuve’s Dune reboot to October 2021.

‘The High Note.’
Universal’s musical dramedy The High Note premiered in the US on-demand and on about 100 screens, mostly drive-ins, in late May, while Warner Bros’ Cats & Dogs 3: Paws Unite! went straight to digital in the US.
So Australian exhibitors had modest expectations as both titles opened in cinemas last weekend while ticket sales remained depressed but should pick up from today with the school vacation.
Typifying the malaise, no title cracked $1 million last weekend as Numero reported the top 20 generated $3.6 million, down 5 per cent on the previous frame.

“The Tax Collector” and “The Secret Garden” both showed strong VOD debuts Friday while taking different routes to success. Set among rival Los Angeles gangs, David Ayers’ “The Tax Collector” stars Shia Labeouf and placed #1 at Apple TV and FandangoNow, and #5 at Amazon (Spectrum’s charting period ended before it was available.) “The Secret Garden,” the fourth adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic story of an orphan girl who finds escape in a magical garden, took the top spot at Amazon and fourth at FandangoNow.
With a non-premium price of $6.99, “The Tax Collector,” distributor Rlje self-reports that it has first weekend rentals over $2 million and played at 129 theaters (mainly drive-ins), where it grossed $309,964. That’s first place among new releases; according to incomplete grosses on Comscore, “The Empire Strikes Back” was #1 overall. The garden in The Secret Garden looks different to everyone who reads Frances Hodgson Burnett’s beloved 1911 classic. It may be an untamed plot of land with room for wildflowers and imagination for some, or a pastoral paradise with every kind of foliage imaginable. The latest adaptation leans toward the latter, dialed up to a hundred, […]

Garden of Earthly Dismay: Munden Makes Burnett Mundane in Lifeless Remake
There is no frigate like a book to take us lands away, and certainly when said book’s imaginative pleasures are reduced to generic displays of CGI and characters reduced to platitudinous shadows. Such is the case with the latest adaptation of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s classic children’s novel The Secret Garden, originally published in 1911 and has been made into film versions several times over the past century, most notably by Agnieszka Holland in the Francis Ford Coppola produced 1993 production.

The Secret Garden is lavishly adapted for the fourth time on the big screen. Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's novel gets a twenty-first century visual effects makeover from the steady hand of Harry Potter and Paddington producer, David Heyman. The film ably captures the magic and innocence of the book. It stumbles somewhat in the final act, but is rescued by a luminous performance from young Dixie Egerickx.
The year is 1947. India is in a state of upheaval with the creation of Pakistan. A British girl in a dirty dress, Mary Lennox (Dixie Egerickx), eats scraps of food from a dinner table. At night she hides under her sheets, telling stories to herself with puppets. The following day Mary is found by a soldier. Her parents did not survive cholera at the local hospital. An obstinate Mary is sent back to England to live with her wealthy uncle.

Children’s fantasy media has long been one of Britain’s chief exports. From Peter Pan to The Chronicles of Narnia, to Harry Potter, the UK has been entertaining audiences around the world with stories of magic. But though Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 novel, The Secret Garden, is a classic of British children’s literature, it is not an example of children’s fantasy. Nor did it ever pretend to be. Rather Burnett’s prose led its readers through a tale of catharsis and wonder that takes place completely in a setting that obeys recognizable laws of horticulture. We need both kinds of stories. One kind of story allows us to escape into a world where anything is possible while the other suggests that we can find happiness and healing in a world that acts like our own. The distinction matters, and it’s one that the latest film adaptation of The Secret Garden,...

I’ve always viewed The Secret Garden as a sort of “Gothic romance for beginners,” with a dose of that childish whimsy that made Frances Hodgson Burnett‘s 1911 classic such a fixture on our childhood bookshelves or our televisions in the form of the various film and made-for-tv adaptations over the years. Hear me out: a willful protagonist […]

There’s always been magic in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s “The Secret Garden,” a classic children’s story that, for all its harsh lessons about the nature of the world, relies on some pretty strange twists of fate to deliver its story. We’re talking, of course, about the robin redbreast, a cheery, chattering little bird responsible for one of the story’s biggest revelations. While Burnett’s 1911 novel never shied from the rough stuff — like most of her work, the book is concerned with orphans and illness — it used real-world pains to make its pleasures richer. And still, even it relied on a plucky robin to guide its heroine, the sassy Mary Lennox, to a literal key that opens the titular Secret Garden.
Yes, magic is part of Burnett’s world, but the story’s latest big-screen adaptation stretches that concept to strange ends, and not all of them benefit the film.

Ever since David Lynch, decades ago, flirted with the prospect of making a film of “The Secret Garden,” Frances Hodgson Burnett’s 1911 children’s novel, I’ve always leaned toward thinking it could make a great movie — and I’ve always imagined that movie as a spooky, earthy Lynchian dream, since that so connects with my memories of the book as a child. It was read aloud to my fourth-grade class, and every time the characters entered the garden of the title, it seemed to be as romantically odd and mysterious a place as Wonderland or Oz: a lushly eerie gothic Eden — a paradise that could restore life because, ironically, it held memories of death. But translating the somber magic of the book to the big screen has proved to be an elusive challenge.

The producers of this new version of Frances Hodgson Burnett's enduring 1911 children's literature classic, The Secret Garden, couldn't possibly have guessed their film would open five months into pandemic lockdown, when many children have been climbing the walls in isolation. That timing gives the beloved fable of imagination, liberation and rebirth renewed enchantment. Screenwriter Jack Thorne shakes up the framework, expanding the backstory and creating a more dramatic climax, and the film is decidedly CG-heavy for a plot about the healing gift of nature. But the target audience of youngsters seems unlikely to mind those liberties.

Even Frances Hodgson Burnett’s happy endings come with a price. The beloved British author responsible for two of children literature’s most enduring classics was never precious about meting out “happily ever after” endings with some serious asterisks. Burnett didn’t dislike a happy ending so much as understand that even the most fantastical of plot twists — the long-missing father returns, compassion is cool, the savior was living next door the entire time — should exist in both a fairy tale world and one that looks very similar to the real one.
After all, Burnett’s heroes are mostly children who are skin-of-their-teeth survivors, young stars who overcome through both sheer force of will and the power of their big imaginations. There...

There’s no shortage of great movies coming to Netflix in February 2020, as the streaming giant’s typically eclectic release slate runs the gamut from recent favorites like “Good Time” and “Anna Karenina” to unimpeachable ’90s classics like “Jerry Maguire” and “Starship Troopers.” And while Netflix’s library of older films continues to dry up, the addition of must-see ’80s movies like “Blade Runner” and “Purple Rain” might help to ease the pain, or at least keep you busy while you figure out what to watch next on The Criterion Channel.
