James Gunn's Original Superman Movie Villain Was Out Of This World
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Here's a no-brainer: make Lex Luthor the villain of your "Superman" movie. If there's one Superman villain who everyone knows, it's Lex. Nicholas Hoult's Lex in James Gunn's new "Superman" might just be the best one yet. But before Gunn decided on Lex as the movie's bad guy (with some muscle provided by the masked Ultraman), he weighed using at least one other villain. Specifically, a Superman nemesis whom fans have long wanted on the big screen.

In a recent interview on the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast with Josh Horowitz, Gunn revealed that he "considered" using Brainiac in "Superman." He didn't elaborate on what that version of the film would've looked like, but DC fans should be reassured that James Gunn is aware of Brainiac. While Gunn and DC Studios aren't rushing to make a "Superman" sequel right now,...

Top 3 best storylines from the Star Wars: Tales anthology series so far
Image
Tales of the Underworld is the newest installment of the Star Wars: Tales anthology series. The series has taken us inside the lives of the Jedi, Imperials, and people in the underworld. While these stories have featured characters we're all familiar with, the show's format allows us to see what these characters went through during different periods of their lives.

Here are the best 3 storylines from Star Wars: Tales thus far.

1. Count Dooku's arc from Tales of the Jedi

Count Dooku (Corey Burton) in Star Wars: Tales of the Jedi Season 1. Image Credit: StarWars.com

Count Dooku's arc revealed his attachment to his padawan Qui-Gon Jinn and grief over his death. We were given genuine reasons why Dooku was disillusioned with the Jedi and the Republic. It featured the return of Yaddle, Qui-Gon, and several prequel-era Jedi Knights. Dooku's shorts were well-written, emotional, and surprisingly soulful, and featured stunning animation and music.

Tales Of The Underworld Reveals Every Bad Habit Of Filoni-Era Star Wars
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld."

There is good "Star Wars," and there is bad "Star Wars," and sometimes, you can get both in just a couple days. Right now, "Andor" season 2 is in the middle of its run, earning unprecedented critical praise for the franchise. At the same time, Lucasfilm has just released the third season of its "Tales" anthology -- a short-form animated show focusing on a different corner of the universe and pair of characters with each installment.

Following "Tales of the Jedi" in 2022 and "Tales of the Empire" in 2024, this year's Star Wars Day (May the 4th) brought "Tales of the Underworld," with three 15-ish-minute episodes each for Cad Bane (Corey Burton) and Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman). And while those are two characters with plenty of room for development and expansion, the new series is almost completely inert. Where past "Tales...

Tales Of The Underworld Reveals A Key Star Wars Book Scene We Never Thought We'd See
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld."

"Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld" is the latest entry in an animated anthology series composed of mini-episodes that more deeply explore the backgrounds of some of our favorite "Star Wars" characters. Sometimes, it bridges gaps, while at other times, it reveals secrets. The first season, "Tales of the Jedi," provided us with more insight into Ahsoka Tano (Ashley Eckstein) and Count Dooku (Corey Burton). The second season, "Tales of the Empire," similarly gave us a closer look at Barris Offee (Meredith Salenger) and Morgan Elsbeth (Diana Lee Inosanto).

In that same vein, "Tales of the Underworld" brings Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman) and Cad Bane (Burton) into focus. Asajj is a curious character at the moment, as she has had a very interesting gap in her history that hasn't exactly been explained until now. The canonical 2015 novel "Star Wars: Dark Disciple,...

Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld Review — Dave Filoni’s Iconic Villains Go to New Heights
Image
When the “Tales” mini-series started to air every May the 4th, they felt like a gimmick to give the Lucasfilm Animation team a chance to revisit their favorite characters. In the years since, several of these shows have popped up, but with each year, Lucasfilm and the animation team push the boundaries of what is possible within their aesthetic and storytelling choices. With Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld, they may have cracked the code for the best kinds of stories, with two of the best Dave Filoni-era characters the galaxy has ever seen. With two more phenomenal stories for Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane, Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld represents a new high watermark for the animated mini-series.

How to watch Tales of the Underworld on Star Wars Day
Image
The next Star Wars: Tales is coming to Disney+. Tales of the Underworld is out this week.

This season of the anthology season will follow bounty hunters Cad Bane and Asajj Ventress. The trailer teases that we will see Bane’s origin, including a childhood friend who has now become a marshal. A tense standoff seems to await the two. As for Ventress, the series will explore her return from the dead after the events of the novel Dark Disciple by Christie Golden. She will also become the mentor to a young Force user in a post-Order 66 timeline, protecting the young boy from an Inquisitor.

Star Wars: Tales has had two other previous anthology series. Tales of the Jedi focused on Count Dooku before he left the Jedi Order and Ahsoka Tano. Tales of the Empire was all about Barriss Offee and Morgan Elsbeth.

Star Wars: Tales Of The Underworld
Image
The animated Tales Of… series in the Star Wars universe started off two for two. After the show successfully explored the paths of notable Jedi and then took a walk on the dark side, this third set of short stories turns its focus to the underground, where Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman) and Cad Bane (Corey Burton) reside. With the six episodes ranging from 12 to 17 minutes long, split evenly among the two headliners, it’s another slickly packaged Star Wars bundle from creator Dave Filoni that does a lot with a little.

Ventress’ story follows on from the in-canon novel Dark Disciple and sees her form a relationship with spirited Padawan Lyco Strata (Lane Factor) post-Order 66 as they look for a secret path to find hidden Jedi. The mismatched duo are a fun hang, with Lyco constantly picking away at Ventress’ hardened exterior on the inevitable path to genuine friendship across three episodes.

King Of Kings' Jim Cummings Has Done Hondo Ohnaka "Facial Recognition" For New Star Wars Project (Exclusive)
Image
Jim Cummings is an icon. The actor has served as the official voice of Winnie the Pooh since 1988, Tigger since 1989, and the Tasmanian Devil since 1991. However, that barely scratches the surface, as he also counts the likes of Darkwing Duck and Hondo Ohnaka among his many credits.

We first met the latter character in The Clone Wars, and the popularity of the pirate and smuggler later saw him featured heavily in Star Wars Rebels. He's even put centre stage as an incredibly realistic animatronic as part of the "Smuggler's Run" ride in Disneyland and Disney World.

We recently talked to Cummings about his work in Angel Studios' King of Kings and wondered whether the door is open to him potentially voicing Hondo in a live-action Star Wars project. There's a precedent for that as The Book of Boba Fett saw Corey Burton reprise his role as bounty hunter, Cad Bane.

'Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld' Trailer Brings Back Asajj Ventress and Cad Bane
Image
Two beloved Star Warscharacters return in the first trailer for Star Wars: Tails of the Underworld. Disney+ is getting ready to celebrate May 4th, commonly known as "Star Wars Day". The next installment of the anthology will be centered around Asajj Ventress (Nika Futterman) and Cad Bane (Corey Burton). The characters were introduced thanks to the world of Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The upcoming short stories will allow audiences to be reunited with some of the most popular characters from Star Wars animated media, in two thrilling stories that will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.

The last time Asajj Ventress was seen on television was during the last season of The Bad Batch. The lovely group of rogue clone troopers crossed paths with Count Dooku's (Corey Burton) former apprentice during a dangerous mission. It was evident that Ventress was no longer the Sith apprentice audiences had encountered during the Clone Wars.

A Disney Princess Project Ruined the Chances of a New Series

Quick LinksDisney Princess Enchanted Tales Was a Planned Series in the Early 2000sDisney Princess Sequels Tend to Be CringeworthyCinderella III: A Twist in Time Is So Bad That It’s Good

The Disney Princess brand is one of The Walt Disney Company's hottest properties, but not every one of its endeavors has been a success. Although a princess (Snow White) was the beginning of Disney feature-length animated films, centering on one doesn't always guarantee success. Sleeping Beauty, for example, did not fare well at the box office upon its first release. Still, when Disney was in its Dark Ages in the 1980s, it was another princess (Ariel) featured in The Little Mermaid that kicked off Disney's Renaissance. And so, in the early 2000s, when Disney chose to build an entire brand around its catalog of princesses, statistically, they were hedging their bets on a relatively safe property.

In 2007, Disney...

One Important Transformers Villain Is Based On Star Trek's Spock
Image
Spock from "Star Trek" is easily one of the most influential science-fiction characters ever, flat-out. Even actor Leonard Nimoy never escaped the Vulcan's shadow — despite having a long, fulfilling career outside of it. Indeed, before his passing in 2015, Nimoy voiced villains in two separate "Transformers" films.

In the 1986 animated "Transformers" film, Nimoy played Galvatron, the reborn form of Decepticon leader Megatron, galvanized by the power of the dark god Unicron. Later, in Michael Bay's 2011 live-action film, "Transformers: Dark of the Moon," Nimoy voiced Sentinel Prime, mentor of Autobot leader Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen). Starting a "Transformers" tradition, Sentinel turned out to be a villain, allying himself with the Decepticons to conquer Earth and restore the Transformers' war-ruined world of Cybertron.

Aside from his two voiceover roles, Nimoy impacted "Transformers" in another important way via Spock. Marvel Comics writer Bob Budiansky, who wrote the original "Transformers" character bios and much of the proceeding comic,...

This 'Transformers' and 'X-Files' Crossover Needs to Be Adapted On-Screen
Image
Quick Links Transformers in an 'X-Files' Comic? This Could Be So Much Better Than G.I. Joe

Even though 2023’s Transformers: Rise of the Beasts turned out to be the biggest box office disappointment in the franchise, the single post-credit scene at the end of the movie teased that the iconic robots in disguise could see a crossover with another Hasbro property, G.I. Joe. Not only is there the possibility of actors from previous G.I. Joe movies reprising their roles, but in an interview with Collider, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura even said, "Transformers will have more emotions and agency than ever before!"

Even with all these reports coming in about this upcoming live-action crossover in the series, fans of both properties are eager to point out that events such as this have happened plenty of times in the Transformers comic continuity. Before Skybound Entertainment took over the license in 2023, Idw Publishing...

'Watchmen: Chapter 2' Ending, Explained: Is This a New Beginning?
Image
The original Watchmen graphic novel was first published monthly through 1986 and 1987, before being compiled into a single volume in 1987. The comic was written by famed author Alan Moore, illustrated by artist Dave Gibbons and published by DC Comics. In the years since, Watchmen has had three major adaptations – a theatrical live action film directed by Zack Snyder in 2009, an HBO miniseries set in the universe of the comic in 2019, and most recently, an animated two-part film released this year.

This newest adaptation was directed by Brandon Vietti and produced by Warner Brothers. It’s not the first adaptation and is almost certainly not going to be the last, but it is the first that feels like the graphic novel given motion and is the most accurate adaptation of the original work to date.

Transformers One Reimagined In '80s VHS Art With Nostalgic G1 Style
Image
Transformers One has been reimagined in '80s VHS art with a nostalgic style reminiscent of G1, showing off a different interpretation of the prequel. Out of all the movies in the Transformers franchise, Transformers One is the first animated feature to be theatrically released since 1986's The Transformers: The Movie. The film is reminiscent of the first generation on Autobots and Decepticons, taking place entirely on Cybertron and delving into how Optimus Prime (Chris Hemsworth) and Megatron (Brian Tyree Henry) became enemies. It was also a critical success, partially for referring back to older generations of the series.

Now, Matt Ferguson has released a poster reinterpreting Transformers One as an '80s VHS release, showcasing art for a nostalgic interpretation reminiscent of G1. The poster sports the tagline, "Built like brothers. Forged into enemies." It shows Optimus Prime sporting a design that mixes classic with new, while below him,...

It's Time For a '90s Disney TV Icon to Make a Comeback
Image
Millennials might be the first to remember The Disney Afternoon, a two-hour block of Disney cartoons that aired on weekdays from 1990-1997. The block ran in four half-hour segments which alternated between multiple animated series. Surprisingly, the line-up was not slated for The Disney Channel only and aired in many markets across the United States. Some of the headlining shows featured characters that Disney fans would have already been familiar with from the studio's catalog of films and shorts, while others presented all-new characters and concepts.

Recognizable shows, like Darkwing Duck, first aired on The Disney Afternoon and featured voice talents like Jim Cummings. A veteran Disney voice actor, Cummings is best known as the current voice of Winnie the Pooh and Tigger -- but his resume extends well beyond Disney. Nostalgia for The Disney Afternoon has encouraged the studio to consider rebooting some of its properties from the block,...

Watchmen: Chapter 1 Review - Too-Faithful Storytelling Makes For An Only Adequate DC Adaptation
Image
Alan Moore's graphic novel gets another shot at life with Watchmen: Chapter 1, a faithful, yet flawed, adaptation. The 3D cel-shaded animation offers a unique approach to the material, yet feels cheap in parts. The cast are well-chosen for their roles, particularly Titus Welliver as Rorschach, and the adherence to the source material's story is welcome, but ultimately feels too familiar and lacking surprise.

The world of Alan Moore's iconic graphic novel is coming back to the screen with Watchmen: Chapter 1, the third major adaptation of the source material. Zack Snyder first adapted the superhero satire with the 2009 movie of the same name, which saw a generally polarized response from critics but, much like other Snyder movies, has amassed a cult following since. Lost alum Damon Lindelof came back a decade later with the HBO Watchmen miniseries, which served as a sequel to the graphic novel and explored the same universe 34 years later,...
