NASCAR Xfinity Series Races Arriving a Year Early on The CW; First Races to Air on the Channel This Fall
Image
Originally, the NASCAR Xfinity Series was not due to begin airing races on The CW until the 2025 season.

NASCAR is putting the petal to the metal on its new deal with The CW. The racing league’s Xfinity Series was due to shift its races to The CW as its primary broadcast home starting with the 2025 season, but this week it announced that the final eight races of the 2024 Xfinity season will exclusively air on the channel instead of current broadcast partners like FS1 or USA Network.

NASCAR Xfinity races on The CW begin Friday, Sept. 20, and continue through the season’s end. Races will still be produced by NBC Sports, and will feature analysis from Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte. The NASCAR Cup Series will air on Fox, NBC, TNT, and Prime Video starting in 2025. 30-Day Free Trial $8.99+ / month amazon.com

The CW To Give Viewers An Early Taste Of NASCAR, Adding Eight NBC Sports-Produced Xfinity Series Races To Fall Schedule
Image
The CW is giving viewers an early taste of NASCAR coverage, adding eight Xfinity Series races to the fall schedule ahead of the 2025 start of a 6-year rights deal.

The run of season-ending races will start September 20 in the Xfinity Series Championship from Phoenix Raceway on Saturday, November 9. NBC Sports will handle production, with Rick Allen serving as lead race announcer alongside analysts Jeff Burton and Steve Letarte, and NBC Sports VP of Motorsports Jeff Behnke in charge of production.

The CW announced last summer that it will will take over exclusive rights in 2025 to the NASCAR Xfinity Series, which is on the next tier down from NASCAR’s main Cup Series but nonetheless has an avid fan base. Most of the Xfinity Series drivers are young up-and-comers in the sport, and the races take place in major cities and on many well-established tracks.

The rights deal will bring 33 live races,...

New Planet Of The Apes Trilogy Plans Make Sense Now
Image
The plans for a new trilogy starting with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes now make sense, thanks to information revealed by the upcoming film's writers. The Planet of the Apes franchise kicked off in 1968 with the release of the original film, during which a group of astronauts found themselves on a strange world inhabited by intelligent apes and primitive humans, a story spanning five films, a television series, and an animated series, before Tim Burton attempted a reboot in 2001. Though this was a critical failure, Rise of the Planet of the Apes successfully rebooted the franchise in 2011, penned by screenwriters Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa.

Each film in the more recent Planet of the Apes trilogy, including Rise, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and War for the Planet of the Apes, achieved critical acclaim, making the development of further films in the franchise inevitable. This is...

Mysterious Island | Blu-ray Review
Fans of special effects icon Ray Harryhausen should rejoice at the remastering of 1961’s Mysterious Island, a sequel of sorts to Jules Verne’s more celebrated 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, which had been memorably adapted by Richard Fleischer in 1954. Director Cy Endfield takes the reigns on this big budget spectacle which tends to suffer from a bout of sequel-itis as regards the bombastic fervor of gigantic, menacing creatures taking precedence over characterization or narrative energy. Still, the production quality does display the same sense of movie magic specific to a certain period of cinema where Harryhausen’s signature Dynamation would influence generations of future filmmakers.

During the 1865 siege of Richmond, Virginia, a handful of soldiers, both Union and Confederate, escape the stockade via a hot air balloon, ending up somewhere on a strange island in the Pacific Ocean. Captain Cyrus Harding (Michael Craig) more or less resumes control of the men,...

“You Blew It Up”: Looking Back at Planet Of The Apes
[With Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opening on Friday, July 11th, I'm taking a look back at the Planet of the Apes movie franchise. These reviews contain spoilers.] Planet of the Apes, in addition to being one of the best and most enduring sci-fi films ever made, is also one of the genre's most cynical, pessimistic, and depressing entries. We tend to gloss over that aspect because it's tempered with people dressed up as apes. Wearing an ape costume really relives a lot of the tension, and turns Franklin J. Schaffner's classic 1968 film into a subversive piece of entertainment filled with action and suspense. These elements are essential in a film that eviscerates not only the prejudices and conflicts of the 1960s, but the inequities and shortcomings we continue to experience almost 50 years later. Astronaut George Taylor (Charlton Heston) and his crewmates Landon (Robert Gunner), Dodge (Jeff Burton), and Stewart (Dianne Stanley) have left Earth in 1972, and because of Einstein's Law of Relativity, they don't expect to return until 2673. However, their ship inexplicably crashes on an alien...

Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
"Rise of the Planet of the Apes": Easter eggs from the film that you may have missed
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
The new "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" isn't connected in any concrete way to the original five film series that ran from 1968 to 1973 or Tim Burton's reboot from 2001.  But even though "Rise" establishes its own, new continuity (of the apes), it still contains a ton of references, shout-outs and easter eggs to its old school brethren (or simian, in this case).  Here are all the ones this long-time "Ape" fan caught. And be aware that this piece may contains extensive Spoilers for every film in the series.

1. Character Names (of the Apes)

Most of the main cast of "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" are named with a wink to the past.  The leader of the ape rebellion, Caesar (Andy Serkis) shares his moniker with the similar character, played by Roddy McDowell, from "Conquest of" and "Battle For the Planet of the Apes."  Scientists at the...

A Timeline and Exploration of the Original 'Planet of the Apes' Franchise in Advance of 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes'
A scene from Rise of the Planet of the Apes

Photo: 20th Century Fox Over the weekend I revisited the original Planet of the Apes films. I would have watched Tim Burton's 2001 remake had it been available on Netflix streaming, but since it wasn't I didn't particularly care to have them send the DVD to me. I've seen that film once in my life and that was enough. However, the original five films are awfully entertaining and as well as thought-provoking. Themes of slavery, power, nuclear war, ignorance, intolerance and so on are peppered throughout all five films, five films that are also incredibly dark in nature.

Tonight I will be seeing Rise of the Planet of the Apes, 20th Century Fox's return to the franchise for the first time since the 2001 debacle and the first film in the franchise to not use men in rubber ape suits, but...
