Billy Drago, ‘Untouchables’ Star, Dies at 73
Billy Drago in True Blood (1989)
Billy Drago, who often played harming but chilling gangster roles and appeared in Brian De Palma’s “The Untouchables” and Clint Eastwood’s “Pale Rider,” died Monday in Los Angeles of complications from a stroke. He was 73.

The character actor played Al Capone’s henchman Frank Nitti in 1987’s “The Untouchables.”

On TV series “Charmed,” he put his reptilian stare to good use as the demon Barbas in several episodes over five seasons.

Born William Eugene Burrows in Hugoton, Kan., his actor-director father was said to be of Native American origin. His mother’s family was of Romany extraction; he took their name Drago as his stage name. Starting out as a stuntman, he moved to New York and beginning his acting career.

Drago started acting in the late 1970s, appearing in films including “Cutter’s Way,” “No Other Love” and “Windwalker.” On television, he had guest roles in “Hill Street Blues,...

If you’ve been missing Sydney Bristow, better book a ticket to Austin, TX. The Atx Television Festival announced today it will be hosting an “Alias” writers’ room reunion featuring many of the show’s long-time scribes, including Ken Olin, Lawrence Trilling, Sarah Caplan, Monica Breen, Jeff Pinkner, Andre Nemec, and Josh Appelbaum.

Creator J.J. Abrams has yet to be confirmed, but additional panelists will be announced at a later date. Last year, the Atx Festival hosted a writers’ room reunion for “The O.C.” that included creator Josh Schwartz.

Also announced this afternoon was a “Parks and Recreation” community screening. For the first five seasons of the festival, the Austin-based event celebrated an Austin-based show: “Friday Night Lights.” But last year marked the final tailgate party / community screening for the beloved series, and festival programmers found a more than fitting replacement in “Parks and Recreation.”

‘Love Is Strange’ – Cast Interviews
In the New York Premiere of the narrative film Love Is Strange, Ira Sachs shines in his writing and directing of the challenges faced by two mature gay men, played by Alfred Molina and John Lithgow.

Ben (Lithgow) and George (Molina) are a same sex couple living in New York who get married after spending 39 years together. However, with George being a music teacher in a Catholic school, he is fired after the marriage and now he and Ben must decide what to do since they cannot afford their apartment. Just recently married, they are separated to go into different living quarters, with Ben moving to Brooklyn and George staying with neighbors. In Brooklyn, Ben stays with his nephew and his family, Elliot (played by Darren Burrows), Kate (Marissa Tomei) and their son Joey (Charlie Tahan), all the while George now lives with Roberto (Manny Perez) and Ted (Cheyanne Jackson...

Film Review: Sachs' Latest Comparable to Bergman, Godard, De Sica
‘Love Is Strange’ movie review: Gay romantic drama is ‘beautiful in every way’ (photo: John Lithgow and Alfred Molina in ‘Love Is Strange’) Love Is Strange is beautiful in every way that a film can be beautiful, and unabashedly so. Yet, despite its willingness to gild the lily for love of ethereal, aesthetic beauty in all its forms, it is a film that reaches for the truth — the deepest truths of what we often call “the human condition.” For all these reasons I love Ira Sachs’ movie as much as it wishes we would love each other. I love the artistry of it. I love what it has to say and that it’s something seldom said. I love that it is forgiving. Without hyperbole, I tell you that Love Is Strange is the stuff of Jean-Luc Godard (Notre Musique and In Praise of Love), Vittorio De Sica (Umberto D....

Love Is Strange Review
[This is a re-post of my review from the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Love Is Strange opens today in limited release.] “Write what you know,” is a common piece of writing advice. I don’t know how much of Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange is autobiographical, but it feels true to life. Boring, boring life. Because the film feels true to life, it also feels like one of the most self-indulgent films I’ve ever seen. Sachs is completely oblivious to what its audience would find remotely interesting or even emotionally relatable. The director takes his central relationship, one featuring great chemistry between Alfred Molina and John Lithgow, and completely undermines it with a hypocritical narrative. Not content to ruin his picture’s strongest asset, Sachs also drags his movie down with worthless side-plots and then tries to give his picture the illusion of depth and emotion with cheap tricks and unearned sentiment. Ben (Lithgow) and George (Molina) have been together for 39 years, and they’ve finally tied the knot now...

‘Love Is Strange’ tells the wrong story
There is a wonderful scene in Ira Sachs’ new film, Love Is Strange, in which Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) share a drink at a venerable gay bar in New York City. Ben relates a powerful story to the bartender, in which he and several gay friends marched into that very same bar nearly 4 decades earlier, newspaper reporters in tow, and demanded to be served. It began a revolution of sorts, instituting a level of acceptance never before seen in the gay community. Clearly in awe, the bartender thanks Ben for his bravery and gives them a free round of drinks. Ben and George, a romantic couple who have been together for 40 years, look at one another and share a mischievous laugh. George chides the obviously-lying Ben, “You’ll do anything for a free drink!”

This scene masterfully draws upon the shared experiences—the pain, the joy, the...

Specialty B.O. Preview: ‘Love Is Strange’, ‘Are You Here’, ‘To Be Takei’, ‘Winter In The Blood’, ‘The Olivia Experiment’, ‘Expedition To The End Of The World’
Alfred Molina and John Lithgow in Love Is Strange (2014)
There was a time when two veteran straight actors such as John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, taking on the roles of a gay couple and their subsequent travails at married life would have been the tabloid equivalent of shock and awe. It still might raise some eyebrows, but Ira Sachs’ Love Is Strange is a testimony to societal progress in terms of storytelling. Now it will face the box office as the Specialty title platforms this weekend via Sony Classics. A real-life gay marriage takes the spotlight this weekend courtesy of Starz Digital doc To Be Takei about the multi-faceted actor/activist and social media talent who is best known for playing Hikaru Sulu in TV’s original Star Trek. It will be joined by Millennium Entertainment’s Are You Here with Owen Wilson, Zach Galifianakis and Amy Poehler which will open day and date by Mad Men writer Matthew Weiner.

Love Is Strange
Alfred Molina and John Lithgow in Love Is Strange (2014)
In a summer of movie romances, Love Is Strange is the one that cuts deepest. Without the usual bull and spackled-on sentiment, it hits you like a shot in the heart. Director Ira Sachs, who wrote the subtly nuanced script with Mauricio Zacharias, intuitively knows where attention must be paid.

George (Alfred Molina), a music teacher, and Ben (John Lithgow), an artist, have lived together in Manhattan for nearly 40 years. When state law finally allows them to marry, they do so happily among family and friends. But being legal gets...

Married Life: Sachs’ Latest a Subtle Portrayal of Love, Marriage, and Familial Bonds

Following on the heels of his 2012 film, Keep the Lights On, which documented a rather tumultuous and sometimes toxic relationship between two gay men over the course of a decade, director Ira Sachs delivers what is perhaps his most heartfelt and warmly observed film thus far. While many of the central relationships depicted in Sachs’ works are marked by melancholy and discord, whether that be the arresting loneliness of the superb Dina Korzun in Forty Shades of Blue (2005) or the dark comedy underpinning the extra-marital affair in Married Life (2007), here with Love is Strange, we are graced with a couple played by John Lithgow and Alfred Molina, partners of nearly forty years that have finally taken it upon themselves to exchange overdue marriage vows.

After thirty nine years of living together, Ben (John Lithgow) and George...

Love Is Strange Review
Love, for being such a harmonious emotion, has received numerous lashings from pop culture over time. It’s been likened to a battlefield, dubbed crazy and stupid – hell, it’s even been called a “motherf&cker” by Old School - but I believe writer/director Ira Sachs hit the nail on the head by simply stating “Love Is Strange.” How does one capture such a wild, untamed emotion in one movie, guiding us from a lustful spark’s initial lighting all the way to its bittersweet flickering out? Easy, he doesn’t. John Lithgow and Alfred Molina may fearlessly play two long-time lovers in what appears to be a typical genre setup, but Sachs merely uses the homosexual couple as a wonderful portrayal of love’s rawest state – avoiding preachy civil rights issues and obvious statements about equality. Instead, Sachs suggests we live, laugh, love, and touch as many hearts...

Love Is Strange Trailer Showcases John Lithgow And Alfred Molina Brilliantly
You don’t often get films that truly reinvent a general dynamic that we’ve seen countless times before, but Love is Strange is such a film. You’ve seen older people in love, and you’ve seen married couples go through various hardships. Hell, you’ve even seen people thrown into the deep end of the generational conflict pool. But, you’ve never seen two aging gay men forced to live apart, who have to make sense of things all over again.

The casting of John Lithgow and Alfred Molina couldn’t be better, if the trailer can be believed. Even just from what you get here it look as though both of them hit every note perfectly, and its a film that requires them to take on a lot more than your average story.

Take a look at this one, and watch for it on August 22nd. This...

This Is the 'Midnight Cowboy' Legacy, From A to Z
It's a shock to go back and watch "Midnight Cowboy" 45 years after its debut (on May 25, 1969) and see how raw and otherworldly it looks. After all, the X-rated Best Picture Oscar-winner has been so thoroughly assimilated into American pop culture that even kiddie entertainments like the Muppets have copied from it.

The tale of the unlikely friendship between naïve Texas gigolo Joe Buck (Jon Voight) and frail Bronx con man Enrico "Ratso" Rizzo (Dustin Hoffman), "Midnight Cowboy" was initially considered so risqué that it's the only X-rated movie ever to win the Academy's top prize (though after it won, the ratings board reconsidered and gave the film an R). Still, the film featured two lead performances and a few individual scenes that were so iconic that homages (and parodies) have popped up virtually everywhere. (Most often imitated is the scene where Ratso, limping across a busy Manhattan street, is nearly...

‘Love Is Strange’ is marred by plot imperfections but buoyed by first-rate performances
Alfred Molina and John Lithgow in “Love Is Strange”

Love Is Strange

Directed by Ira Sachs

Written by Ira Sachs and Mauricio Zacharias

USA/France, 2014

So intertwined are Ben (John Lithgow) and George’s (Alfred Molina) lives in Ira Sachs’ new movie Love Is Strange that everything is completely changed by the absence of one another. Uncannily reminiscent of Leo McCarey’s depression era film Make Way for Tomorrow about an elderly couple forced to live apart by bankruptcy, Love Is Strange echoes that story in many ways but adds modern relevance by making the couple gay and the cause of their separation rooted in homophobic discrimination. At the cost of plausibility it lamentably shoots itself in the foot so that it can stay located in Manhattan but through virtue of the talent on hand it is still able to create piteous moments of longing for a hard won happily...

Berlinale 2014: Love is Strange Review
Ira Sach’s previous feature Keep the Lights was an intimate study of a young man desperately seeking true love, as we proceed to document the devastation that inevitably ensues, in what was a poignant and somewhat unsympathetic drama. However he now returns with something a little warmer and tender, in the quite brilliant Love is Strange.

Having been together for 39 years, Ben (John Lithgow) and George (Alfred Molina) finally decide to tie the knot, though their celebrates are halted, when a mere matter of weeks into their marriage, and George is fired from his job at the local church because of making his homosexual relationship ‘official’. Struggling to make ends meet, the pair sell their house, and while searching for a new apartment, Ben moves in with his nephew (Darren E. Burrows), his wife (Marisa Tomei) and their teenage son, Joey (Charlie Tahan), while George sleeps on the sofa at their former neighbours.

Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan in The Trip (2010)
Sundance 2014: Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon cut each other up once more in 'The Trip to Italy'
Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan in The Trip (2010)
Fifty years ago (on Feb. 7, 1964, to be precise), the Beatles came to America with a sound so blissful and spangly and new that it would have seemed — still seems — counterintuitive to think how much that sound was influenced by America. The four magical mop tops seemed to relish our rock & roll even more than we did (though, of course, they gave it their own incandescent spin). Mind you, I’m not comparing Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, the two brilliantly funny quipster cynics who portray themselves going on a culinary road adventure in The Trip to Italy, to the Beatles...

Sundance 2014: Love Is Strange Review
“Write what you know,” is a common piece of writing advice.

Sundance 2014: Michael Fassbender, Nick Offerman, and Roger Ebert headline Premieres
Roger Ebert
The Sundance Film Festival announced the titles selected to screen in its out-of-competition Premieres and Documentary Premieres sections. Last year, the movies that were launched in these categories — which typically highlight filmmakers who’ve appeared at Sundance before — included Before Midnight, Don Jon, and The Way Way Back; this year appears to be just as promising. In Lynn Shelton’s Laggies, a young woman stuck in arrested-development (Keira Knightley) has her life upended by an unexpected marriage proposal. In David Wain’s They Came Together — surely, a naughty pun, yes? — Wet Hot American Summer alums Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd...

The poetry of ‘Northern Exposure’
There are certain images that stick with me from my childhood TV consumption: turtles eating pizza in a sewer; Kevin Sorbo in leather pants; and a moose serenely walking down the street. The latter image is the opening to one of my favorite TV shows of all time – Northern Exposure. I didn’t remember much other than that moose until I watched the entire series on DVD several years ago. The re-discovered show was instantly a favorite for its consistently philosophical, yet comedic, treatment of the human condition. I still don’t run into many people who remember the dramedy. It seems to be largely forgotten, which is strange considering that it won two Peabody Awards and the series creators, Joshua Brand and John Falsey, and many of the show’s writers would go on to create and write episodes of The Sopranos. While my list of favorite shows continues to grow,...

[TV] Groundhog Day and the Time Loop Legacy
A lasting impact of the 1993 comedy Groundhog Day is that it changed the entire vocabulary of the day. Instead of being the sort of minor holiday that you forget about until your co-worker mentions it, a “Groundhog Day” has become a symbol for the day that must be lived over and over and over again—supposedly until you get it right. In science fiction, it’s known as a time loop. The time loop plot existed on television long before the film (some date it back to the 1961 Twilight Zone episode “Shadow Play,” although technically that is a repeated dream, not a repeated reality), however, the success of the film certainly influenced the popularity of the “time loop” plot, to the point where it has become a standard in the science-fiction/fantasy genre. Some are more successful than others.

Let’s review a few examples to see which shows nailed the Groundhog Day tribute,...
