The Lego Movie success prompts Universal deal. 5-year plan for new films after pause in original installment. Over-saturation led to decline in box office receipts. Positive viewer feedback but need for fresh ideas. Focus on animated content and reality TV projects. Shelving of planned Billion Brick Race, Lego Superfriends.

The Lego Movie franchise has come to a surprising halt despite its staggering $1.1 billion success. Five years after the conclusion of the original series, Jill Wilfert, a key executive at Lego, offers a candid explanation for the decision to end the franchise and hints at a new iteration in the works.

2018 Ace Eddies Awards offer preview of Oscars [Updating Live]
The American Cinema Editors handed out the Eddie Awards on Friday (Jan. 26). Oscar watchers were in attendance for the ceremony at the Beverly Hilton as they are keenly aware that Ace is aces as one of the best indicators of which film takes home the Best Picture Oscar

Since 1990, the film that came up with an Ace went on to win the top prize at the Academy Awards 17 times. And in seven of the 10 years when the Ace barometer was wrong, the Eddie champ was at least a contender for Best Picture, including last year when both the drama winner (“Arrival”) and the comedy/musical champ (“La La Land”) were among the eight Best Picture nominees that lost the top Oscar to “Moonlight.”

Ace Eddie nominations include “Dunkirk” and “I, Tonya”
This morning, the American Cinema Editors announced their nominees for 68th annual Ace Eddie Awards. This is one of the most important guilds to take notice of, due to how Best Film Editing at the Academy Awards can often link up to Best Picture. It’s not a perfect correlation, but when looking for hints as to what voters might do, anything helps. Here, they’ve nominated almost all of the likely Best Picture nominees, so that’s a help. In fact, outside of Baby Driver and Molly’s Game, I’d say the other eight contenders here are among the favorites to make the big lineup. Time will tell, of course, but Ace is working from a list of frontrunners this year, that’s for sure. Below you can see the nominees for the Ace Eddie. Last year, the big winners were Arrival and La La Land, though Hacksaw Ridge...

Ellar Coltrane in Boyhood (2014)
‘Boyhood’, ‘Grand Budapest’, ‘Lego Movie’ Score Big At 65th Ace Eddie Awards — Complete Winners List
Ellar Coltrane in Boyhood (2014)
Boyhood and The Grand Budapest Hotel took the respective top prizes for drama and comedy tonight at the 65th American Cinema Editors Awards. Oscar snubee The Lego Movie continued to rack up awards-season wins, scoring the trophy for Best Edited Animated Feature Film, while Citizenfour added the Ace Eddie to its winning streak for documentary feature.

The ceremony, hosted by 24 actress Mary Lynn Rajskub at the Beverly Hilton, saw Grand Budapest check in with the upset win over Birdman, which was edited to look like it was shot in a single take and came into the Ace Eddies with strong momentum, having won top honors at both the PGAs and the SAG Awards last weekend. The category had the usual five nominees, but this year’s dramatic feature field was notable for a tie that resulted in six nominees — only the second time the American Cinema Editors has had to...

Before the Oscar nominations were announced this morning, most believed that The Lego Movie was a lock for Best Animated Movie. But the category came and went, and The Lego Movie was not recognized. Well, co-director Phil Lord is not letting the disappointing news get the best of him. Instead, he's taken it upon himself to bestow his talented crew with their very own unique award. Which, revealed in the Tweet below, is just as cool as any Oscar.

Not too reveal too much about the movie if you haven't seen it, the final act of The Lego Movie is live action and takes place in the real world, featuring Will Ferrell as a father who doesn't allow his son to play with his Lego creations. Its unclear if this helped disqualify the movie. The awards category was introduced in 2001. In that time, no animated movie with live action elements...

2015 Ace Eddie Nominations Announced
The American Cinema Editors have taken the time when most of us are still enjoying a little bit of downtime before truly getting back into the swing of things this new year to announce the film and television nominees for the 65th Annual Ace Eddie Awards. Among the nominees are a couple of personal favorites in Whiplash (Tom Cross) and The Imitation Game (William Goldbenbrrg). I also think something must be said for Boyhood, though editing a film over the course of 12 years doesn't really leave much wiggle room. You're essentially editing 12 short films because once you're a year removed... you're a year removed. There are six nominees in the Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category as a result of a tie providing for one additional nominee for the second time ever. Among the comedy/musical nominees I would like to believe The Grand Budapest Hotel (Barney Pilling) would be the front-runner,...

How ‘The Lego Movie’ Is Like A ‘Brick Movie': Phil Lord and Christopher Miller
Phil Lord
Writer/directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the brains behind the huge animated hit The Lego Movie, talk with Deadline’s Pete Hammond about their “iterative” creative process, finding spontaneity in the grind of making animated films, and capturing the Diy spirit of amateurs making “brick movies.” They were speaking at Deadline’s recent Oscar showcase, The Contenders.

The voice cast includes Will Arnett, Elizabeth Banks, Craig Berry, Alison Brie and David Burrows. Producers were Roy Lee and Dan Lin. The film, made for an estimated $60 million, grossed $468 million worldwide. Warner Bros. distributed the film in the United States.

Miller and Lord are now one of Hollywood’s hottest screenwriting/directing/producing duos after their successes with Lego (a sequel is on the way), the 21 Jump Street franchise and the Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs franchise.

Did you see the movie? What did you think? Let us know.

Warner Bros. is putting a Lego Batman movie spinoff from this year's blockbuster The Lego Movie on the fast track for production, with the project taking precedence over The Lego Movie 2, which has been pushed back from its already announced May 26, 2017 release date.

Will Arnett is set to reprise his voice role as Batman from The Lego Movie, with director Chris McKay, who signed on to direct The Lego Movie 2 back in March, now set to direct this Batman spin-off. Author-screenwriter Seth Grahame-Smith is providing the screenplay.

The studio is eyeing a 2017 release for this Batman spin-off, which may take The Lego Movie 2's now-vacated May 26, 2017 release date. Warner Bros. already set a September 23, 2016 release date for another spin-off, Ninjago. It isn't known when exactly The Lego Movie 2 will hit theaters, but it will presumably happen some time after 2017.

Even though The Lego Movie was a monster hit at the box office, some Warner Bros. executives think that Emmet's everyman story needs to be spiced up. So, in a clip from the upcoming Blu-ray, they've added the popular Lego Ninjago characters into a couple of key action sequences. This not only improves the movie greatly, but it also helps set up audiences for the 2016 animated adventure Ninjago by introducing these popular Ninja brick warriors. Chris McKay has signed onto direct The Lego Movie 2. The new director served as animation co-director on original The Lego Movie this past winter.

Last month, we reported that the studio was mulling over whether or not to make The Lego Movie 2 or Lego Ninjago first. The studio is still considering plans for a Lego Ninjago movie, but nothing has been set in stone yet. Chris McKay has signed onto direct a straight sequel at this time. We reported last month that this sequel was moving forward with a script by Jared Stern (The Internship) and Michelle Morgan (Nancy Drew), with Warner Bros. setting a May 26, 2017 release date. The Lego Movie has made over $360 million worldwide since its release on February 7.

Original The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller are producing the sequel, although no voice cast members have been confirmed yet.

Chris McKay has previously...

With over $200 million in box office receipts worldwide, a sequel to The Lego Movie is already in the works. Warner Bros. hired Jared Stern to write the follow-up last month. The studio is also planning on expanding the Lego universe with the stand-alone Lego Ninjago movie. Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman starting writing the script in June, although Warner Bros. currently faces a dilemma, as to which of these two movies will hit theaters first.

Warner Bros.' greenlight committee is currently tasked with deciding whether or not they will move forward with both projects at the same time. The studio previously had a November 2013 deadline from Lego regarding the Lego Ninjago project, but sources say the toy company has granted an extension. Lego Ninjago is an important project for the studio, since they currently only have rights to one sequel for The Lego Movie, and it is believed that...

When actors sign on to portray animated characters, most fans think they just record their dialogue and that's it. However, there is much more to the process, as Chris Pratt explains in a new featurette for The Lego Movie. The actor provides the voice of Lego builder Emmet, who is chosen to lead a team of heroes to stop an evil tyrant from destroying their universe. Although the character is just a tiny figure, the voice actor explains how his recording sessions were also captured on video, so that the animators could implement his facial expressions into Emmet. We also hear from Liam Neeson (Good Cop/Bad Cop) and Will Ferrell (President Business), alongside new footage from this animated comedy, in theaters February 7.

With The Lego Movie hitting theaters in just four short days, Warner Bros. is already moving forward with a sequel, hiring Jared Stern to work on the screenplay with another unidentified writer.

The Lego Movie is tracking very well, with some box office analysts predicting it may gross more than $40 million in its opening weekend, and that it will easily beat other new releases such as The Monuments Men and Vampire Academy. No voice cast members from The Lego Movie have been confirmed to return, and it isn't known if directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller will be back to direct.

Jared Stern, whose other writing credits include Wreck-It Ralph, The Internship, The Watch, Mr. Popper's Penguins and The Princess and the Frog, is part of a Warner Bros. consortium of writers and directors brought together to help develop animated movies. New Lego Movie Images Paint An Interesting Picture
The Lego Movie is fast approaching, and a new set of images have been released that show off… well, a lot of Batman mostly, but some interesting points along other lines as well. It’s an odd assortment of film stills actually, which makes it a bit more fun than normal, because some of them just look like someone playing with Legos and taking pictures.

It’s a bit surprising how much this one is taking off when it comes to the general chatter around the internet, and how much of a marketing push it’s getting. Is this one high on your list of upcoming movies? Or, cynic that you are, is this one rubbing you the wrong way?

Either way, take a look at what you have in store for you.

Official Synopsis and Info

The Lego Movie Trailer Arrives
The Lego Movie, the first-ever, full-length theatrical Lego® adventure, from Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures, opens in theaters February 7, 2014.

Directed by Phil Lord & Christopher Miller (“21 Jump Street,” “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”), this brand new trailer for The Lego Movie stars Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Elizabeth Banks, Will Arnett, Nick Offerman, Alison Brie and Charlie Day, with Liam Neeson and Morgan Freeman.

The original 3D computer animated story follows Emmet, an ordinary, rules-following, perfectly average Lego minifigure who is mistakenly identified as the most extraordinary person and the key to saving the world. He is drafted into a fellowship of strangers on an epic quest to stop an evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.

Chris Pratt (“Moneyball”) stars as the voice of Emmet. Will Ferrell (“The Campaign”) stars as the voice of his primary adversary, President Business, an uptight CEO who...

In The House | Trance | Good Vibrations | 12 In A Box | The Host | GI Joe: Retaliation | One Mile Away | King Of The Travellers | We Went To War | Point Blank | Finding Nemo 3D

In The House (15)

(François Ozon, 2012, Fra) Fabrice Luchini, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ernst Umhauer, Emmanuelle Seigner. 105 mins

A French teacher is instantly drawn in by a student's essay on infiltrating his friend's family, and so are we. Before we know it, we're swept off on a self-reflexive journey into storytelling, voyeurism and ethical boundaries. Both the boy's story and the movie struggle to find an ending, but it's another distinctly "Ozonian" comedy-thriller.

Trance (15)

(Danny Boyle, 2013, UK) James McAvoy, Rosario Dawson, Vincent Cassel. 101 mins

Boyle chucks everything he can (maybe too much) at this twisty, visceral art-heist thriller, which hinges on McAvoy's hypnosis to reveal the whereabouts of a stolen Goya painting. The result is more of a Jackson Pollock.

Good Vibrations (15)

(Lisa Barros D'Sa,...

Legend of the Guardians: Editor David Burrows

How do you combine the rhythm expected of an animated epic, and the pace that family films usually employ?

Today’s audiences are very smart, very film-literate – so you’ve got to try and stay ahead of them without ever leaving them behind! At the forefront of my mind when cutting any scene is getting to the heart of the story – and this very much dictated how I would approach any given scene – whether it was an intimate scene involving the family or a full-on battle scene.
