Netflix Goes ’80s with ‘Footloose,’ Freddy Krueger, and Other 1984 ‘Milestone Movies’
Image
Netflix is continuing to roll out its celebration of iconic films, this time turning the page to 1984.

As part of the streaming platform’s “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection,” Netflix has unveiled the 1984 films celebrating their 40-year anniversary in 2024 with classics like “Footloose” and “Sixteen Candles” alongside Oscar contenders “Amadeus” and “Iceman.”

The Milestone Movies hail from Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures, and Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.

Starting today, April 1, 2024, Netflix subscribers can revisit Brian de Palma’s erotic noir “Body Double” and Kevin Bacon’s breakout performance in “Footloose.” How about a double feature? There’s also “Repo Man” and “Beverly Hills Cop,” streaming just in time for franchise reboot “Beverly Hills Cop: Axle F” out this summer.

In addition to the cinematic celebrations in your Netflix queue, in-person special screenings of select films will continue at the Paris Theater in New York and Los Angeles...

Brian Hibbard obituary
Actor and lead singer with the Flying Pickets during the early 1980s, he went on to take roles in several popular TV series, including Coronation Street, EastEnders and Emmerdale

Brian Hibbard, who has died of prostate cancer aged 65, first found fame as a member of the Flying Pickets, a group of actors who left the socialist playwright John McGrath's 7:84 theatre group to woo audiences through their a cappella singing. They topped the pop charts in 1983 with a cover version of Only You, trumping Yazoo, the duo of Alison Moyet and Vince Clarke, who had reached No 2 with their original recording. This Christmas No 1 single and the group's flamboyant look – gaudy suits, large hats and Hibbard's massive sideburns – led to brief stardom for the Flying Pickets, a name coined because some of them had supported the miners during their strikes of 1972 and 1974. They hit the Top 10 again with another cover,...

A Nightmare On Elm Street Blu-ray Review
Freddy Krueger is defined in pop culture. He’s got the sweater, the hat, the glove, the burn victim scars, and the snark. He’s crossed over so far that people who have never seen his movies know who he is, so much so that children might dressed up as him for Halloween, or - baring that - made tape-based faux-knives on their fingers. If you’re an adult it’s hard not to have heard of the guy, unless you’re Amish or something. And because of his personality, he resonates on a level that even Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees cannot: They are defined by their masks, not their behavior (perhaps because both are usually played by stuntmen). With a remake about to be released, it’s always good to go back to the first film, the film that started it all. When Fred Krueger (Robert Englund) first...
