The Home Review — Pete Davidson Does His Best to Lift Up a Middling Horror Film
Image
The hype around Pete Davidson as a movie star has seemingly dissipated as he stepped back into stand-up comedy. While the actor and comedian continues to have a strong presence in popular culture, he has taken a step towards more cameos and voice acting performances over the past two years. However, The Home gives him a legitimate starring vehicle for the first time since Bupkis. It also allows him to team up with horror director James DeMonaco, best known for his work on The Purge franchise. While Davidson does his best to keep The Home interesting, there are a few too many tropes in the flick. The amazing finale almost makes the entire endeavor worthwhile.

The Home Plot

After years in the foster home system, Max (Davidson) struggles to find his place in the outside world. After another arrest, his foster parents get him a new job at an elderly care home.

Black Mirror's Best Netflix Episode Was Written In Response To A Major Fan Worry
Image
When the science fiction anthology series "Black Mirror" moved to Netflix ahead of its third season in late 2016, it was clear that things were slightly different from how they were when the show was airing on the U.K. network Channel 4. Whereas seasons 1 and 2 primarily featured British talent, season 3 had episodes headlined by American actors, such as Bryce Dallas Howard and eventual "Thunderbolts" star Wyatt Russell. Then there was "San Junipero," which is ostensibly set in the fictional California town of the same name. To this day, many fans -- myself included -- consider it among the best "Black Mirror" episodes of all time and the best of the Netflix era. And it turns out that episode was created as a response to fans who were concerned that the series might have too much of an American flavor upon its debut on the streaming giant's platform.

In an interview with Little White Lies,...

10 Excellent Horror Movies From 2023 You Missed & Where To Watch Them
Image
Many of the best horror films of 2023 went unnoticed due to the dominance of popular franchises and the overwhelming release of Hollywood films. Independent and foreign horror films pushed the artistic boundaries of the genre, blending social issues, stunning visuals, and exciting gore sequences. Films like Huesera: The Bone Woman, Attachment, and The Wrath of Becky showcase unique storytelling techniques, intelligent commentary, intense action, and memorable lead performances.

With so many excellent horror films having come out in 2023, from the continuation or reboot of popular franchises to unique independent horrors, it is easy to miss some of the year's best. While Scream VI and creepy AI doll movie M3GAN found success with audiences and critics alike, many of the year's best horror quietly entered and exited their limited theater runs without much fanfare. Meanwhile, some of these inventive new horror films found themselves dropped on streaming services, only to be...

‘The Wrath of Becky’ Review

Stars: Lulu Wilson, Swann William Scott, Denise Burse, Jill Larson, Michael Sirow | Written by Matt Angel, Suzanne Coote, Nick Morris | Directed by Matt Angel, Suzanne Coote

Co-directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, The Wrath of Becky is a sequel to Becky, a twisted home invasion horror that quickly gained cult appeal when it was released in 2020. With original co-directing duo Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion on board as executive producers, it’s a satisfying follow-up that ticks all the right sequel boxes.

The story picks up three years after the events of the first film, with a now 16-year-old Becky (Lulu Wilson) living with kindly elderly lady Elena (Denise Burse) and working as a diner waitress. However, when Becky pours coffee in the lap of an obnoxious customer, he and his friends follow her home, killing Elena and stealing Becky’s beloved dog, Diego. Vowing to retrieve Diego and avenge Elena’s death,...

“The Wrath of Becky” (2023): A Fun, Action-Packed Thriller Filled with Blood
Image
Directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote and starring Lulu Wilson as Becky, a killing machine, “The Wrath of Becky” is a sequel to Becky (2020) that is much more enjoyable and action-packed.

This film does not have a single philosophical idea to discuss during our existentialist meetings. Since we stopped attending those meetings, our lives have been much better.

Plot

Two years after surviving a violent attack on her family, 16-year-old Becky tries to rebuild her life while caring for an older woman, a kindred spirit named Elena. However, when a violent group known as the Noble Men breaks into her home, attacks them, and takes her beloved dog, Becky must take matters into her own hands to protect herself and her loved ones.

Warning: Spoilers lie ahead for The Wrath of Becky!Seann William Scott is leaving behind his comedy roots with The Wrath of Becky. ‘The Wrath of Becky’ Review: Teenage Rage Finds a Far-Right Target in a Serviceable Sequel
Image
Released to theaters in the theatrical dog days of mid-2020, Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s “Becky” became a home-formats hit, its gleefully tasteless home-invasion thrills a guilty-pleasure tonic for Covid captives going a bit stir-crazy. Now Lulu Wilson is back as that title character, more or less the sole survivor of her prior screen outing. You can be sure in “The Wrath of Becky” that age hasn’t dulled her pissed-off homicidal verve, and that fate will surely provide another crop of ne’er-do-wells to tempt its exercise.

However, a different writing-directing duo is in charge this time, Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote. Their efforts generate rewards that are somewhat diminished, if still diverting. Quiver is releases this SXSW-premiered sequel to U.S. theaters, with home-formats dates as yet unannounced.

Three years ago, Becky was a 13-year-old hopping mad over not just her mother’s recent cancer demise, but...

The Wrath of Becky Directors On Taking Over Franchise & Setting Up A Third Movie
Image
The Wrath of Becky is coming from new creatives, but keeping the same bloody bite. Set two years after its well-received predecessor, the sequel sees the eponymous teenager finally finding a semblance of peace and a new home, only for a fascist group known as the "Noble Men" to tear it apart and kidnap her dog, putting her on a violent new path.

Lulu Wilson returns to lead the cast of The Wrath of Becky alongside Seann William Scott, Denise Burse, Jill Larson, Courtney Gains, Michael Sirow, Aaron Dalla Villa, Matt Angel, and Kate Siegel. Co-written and directed by Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote, taking over from Nick Morris and Lane & Ruckus Skye, the film is an exciting expansion of its bloody predecessor, going bigger with its action and worldbuilding.

The Wrath of Becky Star Lulu Wilson Reveals That a Trilogy is Being Planned
Image
Becky lead Lulu Wilson has hinted a third outing in the action thriller franchise following the release of the upcoming sequel, The Wrath of Becky. Speaking with Comicbook.com, Wilson teased a trilogy for her wonderfully warped young hero, playing it coy when asked if there were any plans for further adventures.

"I don't know how much I can say about this but, like, keep your hopes up. There could be something on the way."

While Wilson carefully hints at a Becky threequel, a further conversation with her co-star Kate Siegel pretty much confirms that Becky 3 is now happening.

"I'm not great at keeping in touch with anyone, but we had dinner the other night and it was amazing. Like Kate is, we're very similar people and she's such a talented actress. It was really exciting to work with her. Hoping that she'll make an appearance in the third. But she's fantastic.

The Wrath of Becky Review
Image
Plot: Becky decimated a quartet of neo-Nazis when she was just 13 years old. Now a couple years have passed, and she finds herself up against a new group of enemies.

Review: The pandemic shut the world down in March of 2020. But a few months later, directors Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion gifted a nation of shut-ins with a special treat: the thriller Becky, which has been described as an “ultra violent Home Alone”. Playing in drive-ins across America before heading to VOD, Becky earned $1 million at the domestic box office during that troubled time. In the long run, it made enough money and caught enough attention to get a sequel greenlit… and now we have The Wrath of Becky. A sequel that comes from an entirely new creative team, who decided to make a tonal shift that might not sit well with some fans of the original.

Black Mirror's San Junipero Was Inspired By A Real-Life Type Of Therapy
Image
This post contains spoilers for "Black Mirror" season 3, episode 4 "San Junipero."

Leave it to "Black Mirror" to make an episode involving euthanasia somehow hopeful. The Emmy-winning "San Junipero" has been hailed as "the show's finest hour" -- it topped our ranking of episodes from the first three seasons of "Black Mirror" in 2016, and was again near the top in our updated ranking of all five seasons in 2022. Now, with "Black Mirror" season 6 on the way in June 2023, it's as good a time as any to go back, revisit old episodes, and perhaps wax nostalgic about the highs and lows of the series.

Consider it a form of "immersive nostalgia therapy," of the kind that Yorkie (Mackenzie Davis) and Kelly (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) undergo in "San Junipero." The episode is unique for "Black Mirror," not only because it's a love story with what could be interpreted as a happy ending, but because...

‘The Wrath of Becky’ Review: Righteously Angry Teen Returns to Take Out More Fascists
Image
Editor’s note: This review was originally published at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival. Quiver Distribution releases the film in theaters on Friday, May 26.

When we last left “Becky” (starring an extraordinary Lulu Wilson), she’d managed to off an entire cell of neo-Nazis, ingeniously and gruesomely plotting their deaths after she and her ill-fated dad ran afoul of the baddies during the world’s worst family vacation. Jonathan Milott and Cary Murnion’s icky “Becky” didn’t do much more than deliver on the promise of turning a teenage girl into a righteous murderer — and, again, what luck to have cast the plucky and spunky Wilson in the title role — but it did feel as if there was more ground to cover (and more blood to spill).

Thus: Sequel! “The Wrath of Becky,” which arrives just three years after Milott and Murnion’s indie hit, certainly offers more — it’s also more of the same.

‘The Wrath of Becky’ SXSW Review – Bigger, Bloodier Sequel Embraces the Silliness
Image
Lulu Wilson tapped into a primal ferocity for her turn as the enraged teen taking down violent home intruders in 2020’s Becky. Its follow-up, The Wrath of Becky, reveals that the time passed between films hasn’t diminished the teen’s volatile rage in the slightest. Armed with John Wick-like motivation, Becky plunges into a new vengeful quest that provokes more violence, bloodletting, and a higher body count. This time a more well-rounded sense of humor offsets her wrath.

Writer/Directors Matt Angel and Suzanne Coote recalibrate the tone straightaway with a humorous reintroduction to the title character. It’s been two years since the events of the first film, and Becky’s been humoring foster families before quickly dodging them. Eventually, Becky and her loyal dog Diego get taken in by a kind older woman (Denise Burse), who never asks questions and isn’t phased by Becky’s survivalist training.
