For nearly 40 years I have had an enjoyable and successful career as an actor. While I hope this will continue, I worry that Actors. Equity seems to be impeding the growth and development of the Australian film and television sector, where most of my work comes from. I have been an Equity member for all my career.
Until my recent resignation, I was an elected member of the National Performers. Committee (Npc) of the Equity division of the Media Entertainment and Arts Alliance trade union.
The Npc.s regular meetings, chaired by Equity President Simon Burke, are supposed to discuss .leading industrial and professional issues and the best course of action to take to ensure a strong and vibrant entertainment industry and a safe and fair workplace for performers.. As an ex-insider, I am not convinced that the Npc.s interpretation of .the best course of action. is necessarily in...

'Square' tops field in Aussie movie noms
SYDNEY -- Jonathan Teplitzky's crime comedy "Gettin' Square" swept this year's Australian Film Institute Awards nominations, announced Friday. The feature garnered 14 nominations across 12 of the 14 award categories, equaling the record set in 1978 by Phillip Noyce's "Newsfront". "Gettin' Square"'s nominations spanned all key categories, including best film, director, actor (Timothy Spall, David Wenham) and supporting actor (David Field, Mitchell Butel). Currently in release, the film could receive a much-needed boost at the boxoffice as a result of the shower of support from the AFI's members, who make the selections and vote on the final awards. Sue Brook's outback road movie "Japanese Story", for which Samuel Goldwyn Films has U.S. release rights, grabbed 10 nominations, including best actress for Toni Collette. Gregor Jordan's "Ned Kelly", meanwhile, scored nine nominations, including best actor for Heath Ledger. The other two films nominated for best film are Rolf de Heer's dark drama "Alexandra's Project" and offbeat comedy "The Rage in Placid Lake", which also scored a nomination for best actress (Rose Byrne).
