Sky has debuted a new 30-second teaser trailer for the upcoming animation ‘Riverdance: The Animated Adventure.’

The animation follows an Irish boy named Keegan (Sam Hardy) and a Spanish girl named Moya (Hannah Herman Corte) as they journey into the mythical world of the legendary Megaloceros Giganteus, who teach them to appreciate Riverdance as a celebration of life.

Directed by Eamonn Butler and Dave Rosenbaum, the film also features the voices of Pierce Brosnan, John Kavanagh, Brendan Gleeson and Aisling Bea.

The film will be available in the UK & Ireland exclusively on Sky Cinema and streaming service Now on 28 May 2021.

Speaking in Annecy this week, Cinesite’s director of animation Eamonn Butler has revealed further details of the first batch of films being made at the VFX house’s new animation studio in Montreal and has revealed why the company has taken the step into producing its own material.

Founded in 1991 as part of Kodak, Cinesite - based in London, Montreal and Vancouver - became a fully independent company in 2012.

Top brass at the effects and feature animation studio said on Monday the 54,000 sq ft Canadian hub – backed by Québec’s investment arm, among others – will get nine features into production and create 500 permanent jobs by 2020.

Investissement Québec is advancing a loan of C$2.4m (Usd 1.8m) to support the creation of infrastructure and an additional loan guarantee of C$19.6m (Usd 14.7m) towards an anticipated overall budget of at least C$90m (Usd 67.3m) is being advanced to Cinesite to help finance the first three films.

Cinesite Group CEO Antony Hunt made the announcement with Quebec premier Philippe Couillard (pictured at Monday’s launch) and revealed two of the first three titles.

At the second VFX + Animation Summit Dublin, international experts and growing local companies gathered to talk about issues such as global competition, tight schedules and training needs. Wendy Mitchell reports.

As Ireland’s VFX and animation industries continue to grow steadily, international experts have reminded the sector that competing in a global marketplace is not just about skills and technical prowess.

“The role of the VFX industry is to help stories; it’s important we embed storytelling from the beginning,” said Darren O’Kelly, MD of London-based The Mill, in his keynote address that kicked off the VFX + Animation Summit Dublin (November 29-30). “We must not let VFX and animation become a substitute for great stories.”

He continued: “I feel for some of our comrades who worked on projects like John Carter; there were absolutely breathtaking effects but a film like that gets neglected after a poor opening weekend… Unless we’re connecting with audiences we’re irrelevant...

London-based visual effects company to open animation unit in Montreal and begin production on 3D feature Charming.

UK digital visual effects company Cinesite is to create a slate of family animation features with 3Qu Media, the new CG-animation production company headed by Shrek producer John Williams and Henry Skelsy, managing partner of Fulton Capital Management.

The first project will be Charming, an irreverent animated comedy that re-imagines the tales of Cinderella, Snow White and Sleeping Beauty who discover they are all engaged to the same prince.

The film will be produced by Williams and directed by Ross Vemokur (Animal Crackerz).

Williams said: “We believe Charming can be a big commercial success and we hope this will be the beginning of a long time feature animation association between 3Qu and Cinesite’s super talented artists, technicians, and production team.”

Adam Bailey has won VFX company Cinesite’s fourth annual Inspire internship program.

Bailey will be working with Cinesite this summer on a major film production.

Bailey is an animation specialist who graduated from Leeds Metropolitan University.

Eamonn Butler, Animation Director at Cinesite, says, “Adam won me over with his passion for animation. His hunger to learn coupled with a natural talent for performance made him stand out in this competition.”

In preparation for its release in March, cast and crew members of the forthcoming Disney sci-fi extravaganza John Carter were in the capital this week to promote the film. I, along with seemingly every other film blogger and journalist not at the London Critic’s Circle Awards was in attendance at the Apollo cinema to see a selection of preview clips and partake in a Q&A with the film’s star, Taylor Kitsch, animation whiz Eamonn Butler visual effects wizard Sue Rowe.
