Why Jonathan Bailey Almost Didn't Play Fiyero In Wicked
Image
When "Wicked" dropped last winter, conversations about the movie's performances understandably focused on Cynthia Erivo's show-stopping screen presence as Elphaba and Ariana Grande's fine-tuned take on Glinda. The two deserved to be the center of attention, but now that "Wicked" fever has cooled ever so slightly (and Grande and Erivo have both been nominated for Oscars), it's only fair to obsess a bit over some of the movie's many other great casting decisions. Among the best? Olivier Award-winning actor Jonathan Bailey as the popular, initially shallow object of both witches' affections, Fiyero.

The Fiyero role has long-since been a key one in productions of "Wicked," with everyone from Taye Diggs to Aaron Tveit to Adam Lambert taking a crack at the part at one time or another (Tony winner Norbert Leo Butz originated the role in 2003). Bailey, who has tons of stage experience and several star-making TV roles under his belt,...

Timothée Chalamet Sees Similarity Between Bob Dylan’s Subtle Lyrical Activism & ‘Dune’s Message: “Be Wary Of Savior-Like Figures” – Berlin Film Festival
Image
James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown is getting its German premiere at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday night, and its Oscar-nominated star Timothée Chalamet is in town to present the film.

Speaking during the movie’s press conference earlier in the day, Chalamet was asked multiple times by the audience what he took from Bob Dylan’s subtle lyrical activism and his ability to separate his art and public persona from becoming overwhelmed by personal political stances.

Chalamet drew comparisons between Dylan’s subtle political messages and those of Dune writer Frank Herbert: “Be wary of cult-like figures,” would be his takeaway from both men, he said, adding that that is a sensible philosophy.

“I won’t speak for him [Bob Dylan] because he’s alive and well in Malibu, but my interpretation is just be wary of any savior-like figures,” Chalamet said.

He added: “Frank Herbert’s Dune,...

Timothée Chalamet rode an e-bike to the premiere of A Complete Unknown… then got a fine
Image
You may have seen pictures of Timothée Chalamet arriving at the London premiere of A Complete Unknown on a bright green e-bike. However, the actor was hit with a £60 fine because he didn’t park it properly. Chalamet told the French talk show Quotidien that he chose to hop on an e-bike instead of taking a car because he wanted to beat the traffic. “It’s ecological!” he said.

Chalamet has received rave reviews for his performance as Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown. He’s scored nominations for best actor from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Awards, SAG Awards, and BAFTAs. You can pretty much bet that he’ll also be adding an Oscar nomination to that list when they’re finally announced.

Wicked: Elphaba & Glinda's Relationship Timeline, Explained
Image
Warning: This article contains spoilers for Wicked, the 2024 movie and the Broadway musical.Wicked is a story about corrupt governments, discrimination, and propaganda, but it is also largely the story of the friendship between the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Witch, beginning long before Dorothy arrives in Oz. The narrative started out as Gregory Maguire's novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West, which positions Elphaba Thropp as the main character and Galinda Upland as her unlikely and ironic friend. The Wicked book was greatly changed when it was adapted for Broadway, including the friendship being brought to the forefront.

In 2024, Wicked was revitalized with a movie adaptation, based on the show rather than the book. The Wicked cast is stunningly led by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande-Butera as Elphaba and Galinda/Glinda, respectively. With amazing individual performances and larger-than-life chemistry,...

A Complete Unknown Box Office Passes Major Milestone, Breaking Record For Star Timothée Chalamet
Image
A Complete Unknown has passed a major milestone, breaking a box office record for star Timothée Chalamet. Chalamet plays folk icon Bob Dylan in the music biopic, which was directed by Walk the Line's James Mangold and also stars Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as the lightly fictionaized Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie. The theatrical release of A Complete Unknown kicked off on Christmas Day in 2024, becoming the second highest-grossing debut movie that weekend behind Nosferatu.

Per Deadline, as of Sunday morning, A Complete Unknown is projected to add a 3-day total of $5 million by the end of its third weekend in domestic theaters. Timothee Chalamet Joins a Very Exclusive Club With Return to SNL Following Bob Dylan Biopic
Image
A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic, has been a resounding success for Searchlight Pictures, and for its leading man, Timothée Chalamet. The actor is set to host Saturday Night Live, and, on top of that, he will be performing as the musical guest – the first time in 30 years a non-professional musician has taken on the dual responsibility.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, the actor has been asked to do double duty on SNL’s January 25 episode. This adds him to a list of distinguished performers such as Ray Charles, Britney Spears, The Rolling Stones, and Stevie Wonder. He also joins an even more exclusive list of musical guests/hosts who are not professional musicians, such as Deion Sanders, Gary Busey, and, most recently – 30 years ago – Lily Tomlin. Though it has not been officially confirmed yet, it’s fair to assume Chalamet will be strumming out some Bob Dylan hits during...

A Complete Unknown: Timothée Chalamet to pull double duty on SNL as host and musical guest
Image
Very few people serve as both host and musical guest on Saturday Night Live. When it does happen, the host/musical guests are icons such as Elton John, Taylor Swift, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, or Britney Spears. In the history of SNL, only four of the double-duty hosts have been non-professional musicians, with the last being Deion Sanders in 1995 (although Bon Jovi also performed that night). We can soon add Timothée Chalamet to that list as the star of A Complete Unknown will host and serve as the musical guest on the January 25th episode of SNL.

Given the dozens of Bob Dylan tunes Chalamet sings in A Complete Unknown, it’s reasonable to assume that he’ll belt out a few of those, but the actor is also a big fan of rap music, so anything could happen. Might we witness the return of ‘Lil Timmy Tim?

James Mangold doesn’t want his Star Wars movie to be “handcuffed by so much lore”
Image
One of the many Star Wars projects in development is a story which will take place 25,000 years before the Skywalker Saga and explore the first Jedi and the discovery of the Force. That’s further in the past than the Star Wars franchise has ever gone, and that’s exactly why James Mangold was interested in it.

“The Star Wars movie would be taking place 25,000 years before any known Star Wars movies take place,” Mangold explained to MovieWeb. “It’s an area and a playground that I’ve always [wanted to explore] and that I was inspired by as a teenager. I’m not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it’s almost immovable, and you can’t please anybody.“

The era encompassing the Skywalker Saga is steadily growing with new movies and TV shows, but Mangold wanted more freedom to craft his story. “To me,...

Timothee Chalamet stars a young Bob Dylan at the beginning of his career, in director James Mangold’s A Complete Unknown. The biopic begins with the 19-year-old musician newly arrived in New York and visiting Woody Guthrie (Scoot McNairy), hospitalized and rendered mute by his Huntington’s chorea. Guthrie’s friend and fellow social activist folk musician great Pete Seeger (Edward Norton) is there too, visiting Guthrie as he regularly did.

Seeger is polite to the young visitor but, at first, he assumes Dylan is just another fan, paying his respects to the legendary Woody Guthrie. That all changes when Dylan plays a song he wrote for Guthrie, and both Guthrie and Seeger are thunder-struck as they realize they are hearing a brilliant new talent. Seeger sets out to introduce young...

It was directed by Logan's James Mangold and is based on Elijah Wald's book, Dylan Goes Electric. Alongside Chalamet, Edward Norton (Pete Seeger), Elle Fanning (Sylvie Russo), Scoot McNairy (Woody Guthrie), and more major figures serve as stars.

According to a report by Deadline, the biopic is expected to become an instant hit in its opening weekend. It is projected to earn a 3-day total of $11.8 million and a 5-day total of $23.3 million. That would mark Searchlight's greatest opener since Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in early 2019.

Where To Watch A Complete Unknown: Showtimes & Streaming Status

A Complete Unknown is following a typical release pattern from theaters to digital to streaming. The 2024 movie is a biopic of iconic folk musician Bob Dylan based on the 2015 Elijah Wald book Dylan Goes Electric! and focusing on his life during the early 1960s. The ensemble cast of the movie includes Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Elle Fanning as Dylan's lightly fictionalized girlfriend Sylvie Russo, Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash, and Scoot McNairy as Woody Guthrie.

James Mangold's A Complete Unknown is the director's first music biopic since 2005's Walk the Line, which starred Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash and was nominated for five Oscars, winning one. The new movie is already following in its footsteps, as it has earned three nominations at the 2025 Golden Globes, including one for Best Picture - Drama and one for Timothée Chalamet's performance.

All kidding aside, Tom Cruise is always down to support the big-screen experience, and he recently joined the cast of A Complete Unknown at a special screening in London. The Call Me by Your Name star stunned at the red carpet premiere in the Big Apple on Friday, December 13, at the Sva Theater, sporting his new hair only days after making an appearance at the Los Angeles premiere of the Bob Dylan biopic.

Chalamet plays a young Bob Dylan in the James Mangold-directed film based on the Elijah Wald 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric. The film follows Dylan as he moves from Minnesota to the Big Apple and the controversy around the use of electric instruments.

Timothée Chalamet Will ‘Never’ Release His Own Album Despite Spending Six Years Learning to Play the Guitar and Sing Like Bob Dylan for ‘A Complete Unknown’
Image
Timothée Chalamet may be earning rave reviews for his guitar-playing and singing as Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” but the Oscar nominee insists he’s not itching to release an album of his own. “Never,” he told me, laughing, at the film’s premiere Tuesday at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

Chalamet credited co-star Edward Norton for pushing him to sing live during filming. “He was always the devil in my ear telling me to do these songs live,” he said. “We had these pre-records, but Edward was always sort of the counterweight to the 99 other voices that were saying not to.”

Monica Barbaro, who plays Joan Baez, recalled singing for the first time with Chalamet during rehearsals. “It was also the first time we met,” she said. “I had sung along with his recordings in the studio, but being in real time, in real life...

A Complete Unknown Review: Timothée Chalamet Captivates As Bob Dylan In A Fascinating Yet Frustrating Biopic
Image
Where biopics are known to depict their subjects as larger-than-life figures to the detriment of their story and humanization, A Complete Unknown reckons with Bob Dylan’s enigmatic nature. James Mangold, who directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Jay Cocks, seems to want to keep the singer as far out of arm’s reach as possible. I walked away from the film feeling like I didn’t learn anything new or interesting about Bob Dylan beyond what we already know about him. That seems to be by design but it’s no less frustrating from a storytelling point of view.

A Complete Unknown is a biographical movie that follows a young Bob Dylan as he integrates with New York and catches the eye of the folk singers in the area, eventually propelling him into stardom.

A Complete Unknown Review: Timothée Chalamet Disappears Into Bob Dylan
Image
Even though it's been over 60 years since Bob Dylan arrived in the New York East Village Folk scene, his grip on American culture has never loosened (despite his best efforts). He started trying to zag when the culture expected him zig early, which is largely the subject of A Complete Unknown. This entry into the Movies About Bob Dylan sub-genre is helmed by writer/director/producer James Mangold, who has spent a career reinventing himself and avoiding labels as well.

Timothée Chalamet takes center stage as a young version of the wandering vagabond/troubadour who becomes a symbol overnight for a nation in turmoil discovering itself, and Chalamet ain't actually him (babe) but he sure is close. In some ways, the title "It' Ain't Me Babe" is a fitting alternate title for the film. Though often considered to be covering a romantic split, it seems applicable to the split between...

James Mangold was hurt by the reaction to Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny
Image
Last Updated on December 9, 2024

Many hoped that Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny would wipe away the bad taste of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, but the long-belated sequel didn’t quite hit the mark. The film received mixed reviews and was one of the biggest box office bombs of the year, grossing $384 million worldwide on a budget said to be well over $300 million. While speaking with Deadline, Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold said he was hurt by the reaction to the film. He also wondered if audiences weren’t ready to accept Indy in his twilight years

“You have a wonderful, brilliant actor who’s in his eighties. So I’m making a movie about this guy in his eighties, but his audience on one other level doesn’t want to confront their hero at that age. And I am like,...

‘American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez’ showrunner Stuart Zicherman on Josh Andres Rivera: ‘This actor is extraordinary’
Image
While writing “American Sports Story: Aaron Hernandez,” showrunner Stuart Zicherman had one thought about casting an actor to play Aaron Hernandez, the late NFL tight end who was convicted of murder in 2015 and later died by suicide in prison. “I remember thinking, ‘Oh, man, we’re never going to find someone to play this,’” Zicherman tells Gold Derby.

But any apprehension about building a show around Hernandez, a preternaturally talented athlete and budding star who made several grave mistakes in his life, fell away when Zicherman saw Josh Andres Rivera.

“In the audition process, we saw a lot of people performing the role and they could play the anger and they could play the darkness and they could play the murderous part of Aaron,” Zicherman says. “What we needed was somebody who could play the other side of it too. Someone who could play the funny, goofy Aaron — the sensitive and aspirational Aaron.

Experts slugfest mailbag: ‘Wicked’s’ color grading, Kate Winslet, and Demi Moore is Margot Robbie?
Image
Is “Wicked’s” color grading that bad? Will Kate Winslet‘s friendly endorsements amount to anything? Gold Derby editors and experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to answer your burning questions of the week.

“Wicked’s” desaturated look, especially compared to the Technicolor pop of “The Wizard of Oz,” has been a point of grievance since the first images dropped. And the discourse has not subsided since the movie’s been seen (and Jon M. Chu‘s viral explanation of it also hasn’t exactly helped). But maybe there’s a more technical reason why “Wicked” look the way it does that doesn’t have to do with color at all — because there are colors in the movie.

A Complete Unknown: First reactions for Bob Dylan biopic predicts Oscar nomination for Timothée Chalamet
Image
Hollywood loves a good musical biopic, and now it’s Bob Dylan’s turn in the spotlight. Based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald, A Complete Unknown will hit theaters next month, but the first reactions have emerged, and they’re quite positive, with plenty of praise for star Timothée Chalamet. Some believe he’s even a shoo-in for Oscar glory.

Scott Menzel said: “Timothée Chalamet delivers the performance of the year in A Complete Unknown. A true tour-de-force where Chalamet is never seen. Chalamet’s performance is not just about the voice and look but rather all of the little nuances and mannerisms that he perfectly brings to his life in his portrayal of Bob Dylan. Great supporting performances too from Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez and Edward Norton as Pete Seeger.“

Variety’s Clayton Davis said: “Timothée Chalamet slides into Bob Dylan with an effortless...
