Another production of crowd-funding, Zero Charisma is a black comedy that tells the story of Scott (Sam Eidson) an overgrown nerd who lives with his grandmother and spends his nights as Grand Master of a fantasy board game that he and his guild have been playing constantly for three years. When one of his players has marital trouble and leaves the game, Scott finds his role as leader of the misfits put into jeopardy when a new “hipster” initiate enters the group.

This is the official trailer for the funny looking fantasy role-playing comedy, Zero Charisma. The movie comes from Chris Hardwick's Nerdist, and this is their first feature film production. The story follows the Game Master of a role-playing game who becomes threatened when a hipster-style geek named Miles joins the group and becomes the life of the role-playing party.

Movies about geeks have never been particularly flattering. Even in films like Revenge of the Nerds where the nerds win the day, there is plenty of dramatic license taken to make them badass so they can win the girl. But stories that cut to the heart of geekdom and reveal what true nerdery is all about? Those are extremely rare. It's even rarer when you find yourself pulling for the geek at the heart of those stories, despite everything else.

Luckily this year at SXSW we stumbled across Zero Charisma, a film about a gamemaster struggling to keep his RPG campaign alive after losing one of the main players. But problems arise when he has to battle with the replacement for popularity, and his world begins to unravel. Zero Charisma presents the story of Scott (Sam Eidson), a role-playing gamer ("gamemaster," to give credit where credit is due) in his 30's whose life, by most standards, is a complete failure. He's homely, overweight, lives with his crusty grandmother (Anne Gee Byrd) (his mother abandoned him when he was eight) in her cluttered run down house, is employed as a donut delivery guy (and has shouting matches with his boss who clearly has no respect for him) and, if it's not already obvious, is very single. And there's no reason to believe that things will change for the better anytime soon. But there is one bright beacon of light in Scott's life, which in typical American fashion is expressed through a bumper sticker on his car: "Because I'm gamemaster, that's why." South by Southwest (SXSW) is just one of many film festivals, we here at Sound On Sight cover yearly. The fest, which takes place every spring in Austin, Texas, began in 1987, and has continued to grow in size every year. The fest announced the first wave of films back in early January, and the lineup included some highly anticipated films such as The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Evil Dead, Downloaded and Spring Breakers. Now the full lineup has been announced, and it just might be one of the best lineups the festival has ever programmed.

SXSW takes place March 8-16 in Austin Texas. Here are just some of the films we are excited about.

The promoters of Austin's legendary South By Southwest Festival , which kicks off on March 8, have announced the massive lineup of film for 2013 (69 world premieres, 14 North American and 5 U.S. Premieres so far), which includes the world premiere of Evil Dead, the much-talked-about reboot of the Sam Raimi classic from director Fede Alvarez. That's the big news, of course, but the lineup also includes a wealth of horror, thriller, dark fantasy and other genre-related titles. Magic Stone Productions and Shark Films announced today that indie comedy Zero Charisma begins production on Monday, April 2 in Austin, Texas. Sam Eidson (Natural Selection; My Sucky Teen Romance) has been cast as Scott, an obsessive fantasy gamer who struggles to defend his tabletop turf and fellow role-players from an interloping neo-nerd hipster. Dakin Matthews (True Grit; Desperate Housewives; Lincoln), Anne Gee Byrd (ER; Everybody Loves Raymond; Monk) and Cyndi Williams (Temple Grandin; Room) have also been cast in the film.

Shakespeare's "King Lear," featuring alternating star turns by Dakin Matthews and Harry Groener; Rogue Machine's searing family drama "Four Places"; and Fountain Theatre's powerful "The Ballad of Emmett Till" are among the most-honored productions in the Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle's 42nd annual awards nominations, announced today. The annual citations salute excellence in L.A.-area theater productions during 2010. Winners will be announced during a ceremony at Burbank's Colony Theatre on March 14. Joining the aforementioned shows in contention for the coveted production award are the Fountain's "Opus," the Actors' Co-op's "Wit," and two world premiere offerings: Del Shores' "Yellow" (Coast Playhouse) and Tom Jacobson's "The Twentieth-Century Way" (Theatre @ Boston Court).
