Like other Roald Dahl books, this one has its share of dreadful characters – this time two of them are front and centre. “Kids (and adults) love that they can vicariously imagine their own worst impulses played out, harmlessly, in a punky fun story. “So when I was approached to write some songs for this movie I immediately said, ‘Let me give it a try and see if you like what I come up with’.”Alongside the original score, David has written...

Among the brilliant first four Talking Heads albums, More Songs About Buildings and Food has always been a dark horse candidate for the all-around greatest. Released 47 years ago this month, it sounds more electable now than ever. With its lean muscularity, panic-attack propulsion, weird ambiance, highwire anxiety, paranoid prescience and formal coherence, it comes across as the Sgt. Pepper of media-age alienation.

It can be hard to pinpoint why, or even how, Billy Shebar’s “Monk in Pieces” is so much better and more involving than the average documentary about the life of an artist. While this loving and attentive portrait of avant-garde icon Meredith Monk makes a decent effort to disguise its conventionality (in so far as its shape occasionally reflects the freeform recursiveness of its subject’s music), underneath it all the film is still a largely chronological tribute spliced together with the usual assortment of archival footage and talking heads — David Byrne chief among them. Shebar may not follow the transliterated Wikipedia page template by starting with Monk’s greatest triumph before doubling back to her modest childhood years, but the path that “Monk in Pieces” charts from the fringes of the Greenwich Village art scene in the 1960s to the National Medal of Arts ceremony in 2015 isn’t...

Hayley Williams has unveiled “Mirtazapine,” a new standalone single that she debuted on Nashville Public Radio on Wednesday, July 23rd.
Taking its name from the antidepressant drug, which is typically sold under the name Remeron, “Mirtazapine” is a more lively, ’90s-influenced alternative rock cut from Williams. She provides an ode to the drug and the relief it gives her, comparing it to “a genie in a screw cap bottle” and singing “I could never be without her/ I had to write a song about her/ Who am I without you now?” Listen to a fan-captured stream of “Mirtazapine” below.
Williams chose to debut the song during a session with Nashville’s Wnxp as a show of support for public radio in the face of recent federal funding cuts. The station has been running a fundraising drive in response. “Thanks for keeping me company,” Williams wrote on the CD containing “Mirtazapine,...

There are sounds that exist before words, utterances from a place so deep within the human animal that language feels like a recent and clumsy invention. This is the territory of Meredith Monk. To hear her work is to hear a voice splinter into a chorus of ghosts and children, a percussive chatter of bone against tooth, a soaring lament that seems to carry the weight of a species.
It is the sound of the body thinking. The documentary Monk in Pieces does not attempt to explain this phenomenon. It wisely chooses to circle it, to witness it, to get close enough to the fire to feel the heat.
The film invites us into the quiet rooms where this storm of sound is born, presenting not an icon but a person, vulnerable and fiercely intelligent. It documents a life spent in radical service to a singular idea: that the fragile,...

David Byrne has unveiled the second single from his upcoming studio album, Who Is the Sky? Titled “She Explains Things to Me,” the new track finds Byrne exploring themes of gender, communication, and self-awareness, drawing inspiration from Rebecca Solnit’s seminal essay collection Men Explain Things to Me.
Produced by Grammy Award-winner Kid Harpoon and arranged by the chamber-pop ensemble Ghost Train Orchestra, the track features lush orchestration beneath Byrne’s introspective vocal delivery. Lyrically, it captures a narrator quietly confronting his own complicity in the ways men often diminish or overlook women’s voices. It’s subtle, self-critical, and unmistakably Byrne, merging thought-provoking storytelling with warm, artful instrumentation.

The Bear is already a visual treat, a show packed with tight cinematography, razor-sharp editing, and performances that pull you right into the heat of the kitchen. But the creators didn’t stop at just looking good. They wanted more. They wanted the show to feel like something. To hit you in the chest, it stays with you long after the credits roll. And boy, did they cook.

We’re officially a month into summer, when the blazing sun is still bearable and the usual suspects—camping, swimming, traveling—start to pick up speed. Another activity, purposely left out to have its own spotlight of course, is moviegoing! While big budget films make their way to the front of the crowd, some indie films proudly extend and wave their arms as they very much should. Luckily, there are a few already out ready to be taken in this Fourth of July weekend. For some people, it understandably feels like a precarious time to be celebrating Independence Day, and for others national pride flows ever so naturally. This July, whether you’re feeling like you’re under the Tuscan sun or a raisin in the sun, there are enough fruitful films to feast your eyes to, and in this heat? There probably isn’t a better place to stay...

Olivia Rodrigo closed out the final day of Glastonbury on Sunday with a headlining set that featured a surprise appearance by The Cure’s Robert Smith.
Introducing Smith as “the greatest songwriter to come out of England,” Rodrigo welcomed the frontman to join her for performances of The Cure’s classic songs “Friday I’m in Love” and “Just Like Heaven.”
Rodrigo’s duet with Smith is just her latest high-profile onstage collaboration with a legendary alt-rocker. Earlier this month, she brought out David Byrne for “Burning Down the House” during her headlining set at New York’s Governors Ball. Over the past year or so, she’s also shared the stage with No Doubt, Jewel, Sheryl Crow, and Stevie Nicks.

If there is a movie that perfectly fits the term “beloved,” then The Princess Bride is pretty much it. The 1987 comical fantasy adventure by Rob Reiner has been a favorite movie of multiple generations and also has the honor of being a movie that both audiences and critics completely agreed is one of the best movies of all time. However, attempts to expand the franchise to the stage have been in theatrical development hell for almost 20 years, but have taken their first big step forward with the appointment of two very familiar and successful songwriters.
The Princess Bride stars Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Mandy Patinkin, Chris Sarandon, and an array of comical talent in minor roles, and, of course, Peter Falk and Fred Savage in the wraparound story. For anyone who does not know what The Princess Bride is about, the synopsis (which does not do it justice) reads:

Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony-winning songwriting duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, two-time Tony winning director Alex Timbers and Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller have joined the in-development musical stage adaptation of the beloved cult classic 1987 film The Princess Bride, based on the novel by William Goldman.
In development since 2019 – at least this iteration – The Princess Bride‘s then-producer Disney Theatrical Productions was teamed with Tony-winning composer David Yazbek.
Other changes since 2019: director Alex Timbers has come aboard, and Jeffrey Seller is now producing. Still with the project: book writers Bob Martin and Rick Elice and music supervisor Tom Kitt.
It’s unclear exactly when or why Disney Theatrical and Yazbek left the project. Disney Theatrical declined comment; Deadline has reached out to Seller for further information.

Olivia Rodrigo’s ongoing world tour made a stop in Dublin, Ireland on Tuesday night, and to mark the occasion of playing in the hometown of Fontaines D.C., she covered the band’s 2022 song “I Love You.”
Playing the Skinty Fia cut in the latter half of her main set, Rodrigo began by celebrating Dublin for having “so many incredible bands.” She then told the crowd that she has been “obsessed” with Fontaines D.C. as of late, and has been playing “I Love You” alone in her room for fun.

Launching into the cover, Rodrigo carried the arrangement on guitar, with her band joining her midway through. Delivering the vocal line originally sung by Grian Chatten with her trademark croon, she fused her style with the brooding love song’s sound. Watch videos of the performance below.

Olivia Rodrigo threw it back to the ’80s this weekend to jam out with a new wave legend.
During her Saturday performance at Governors Ball in New York City, the 3x Grammy winner was joined onstage by Talking Heads frontman David Byrne for a surprise performance of the band’s 1983 single ‘Burning Down the House’ for the crowd at Flushing Meadows—Corona Park.
The rocker matched Rodrigo’s red performance look in a pair of matching overalls as they playfully re-enacted the choreography to the song.
Byrne’s surprise appearance comes after the Talking Heads were introduced to a new generation of fans with A24‘s 40th anniversary re-release of their 1984 concert film Stop Making Sense, which grossed more than $5 million domestically after a limited run in 2023.

Fifty years ago, the Talking Heads performed for the first time, opening for the Ramones at Cbgb. They’d go on to become one of the most influential art-house bands in music history, leaving fans with tons of iconic songs over the decades. Today, they’re celebrating their anniversary by reminding people of one specific classic: They’ve released a video for “Psycho Killer,” the first song they ever wrote as a band.
“Psycho Killer” ended up on the band’s 1977 album, Talking Heads: 77, but never got a video — until now.
