10 Worst Disney Movies of All Time, According to Roger Ebert
Image
The legendary film critic Roger Ebert was a firm believer in the power of family films being works of art that could connect children and adults through movies that featured deep themes. With glowing reviews of movies like E.T. the Extra-Terrestrialand My Neighbor Totoro, he championed family entertainment that did not talk down to its audience.

Some Disney movies exemplify Roger Ebert's ideas about what makes a great children's film, with works like Pinocchio and Snow White and the Seven Dwarves being featured on his Great Movies lists. But other Disney movies fell short of his standards, becoming kids' films that he saw as cheap and under-baked.

Ebert Thought The Princess Diaries Was a Tired Rehash of Tropes

Considered a classic by millennials around the country, and one of the best performances in Anne Hathaway's fantastic multi-decade career, The Princess Diaries is a lovely coming-of-age story wrapped up in a classic daydream.

Is Genovia a Real Place?
Image
While she has gone on to star in many other films throughout her illustrious career, Anne Hathaway got her big break in Disney's The Princess Diaries. These film adaptations of Meg Cabot's young adult novels featured a very different type of "Disney princess" in the form of an outcast American teenager who learns that she's part of the royal family of a small European nation. Given how much time is spent in Genovia during the second film as Mia Thermopolis prepares for her rise to power, many have wondered if the country is real or simply made up for the story.

Genovia as a nation is modeled after a few different European countries and the locations in which the movies were filmed help to lend an authentic quality to the setting. However, Genovia is not a country outside of The Princess Diaries. Even so, how this fictional country is...

20 Best Quotes From The Princess Diaries
Image
The Princess Diaries was one of those movies that made a bigger impact than any of its creators could have guessed and Princess Diaries quotes have made a lasting impression in the world of pop culture. The movie is responsible for bringing Anne Hathaway into the spotlight as Amelia "Mia" Mignonette Thermopolis Renaldi, Princess of Genovia. The film takes an honest approach to the frustrations and insecurities of being a teenager, and despite the outlandish plot, Mia never feels like an unrealistic character.

While Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews's performances were incredible, the writing made the movie what it was, with memorable quotes that still resonate over two decades later. Inspired by Meg Cabot's series of novels, The Princess Diaries sees Mia adjust to royal life after her family heritage is revealed to her and spawned a sequel with Chris Pine. Fans have been clamoring for a Princess Diaries 3 ever since,...

Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries (2001)
What The Stars Of ‘The Princess Diaries’ Have Said About Returning To The Sequel
Julie Andrews and Anne Hathaway in The Princess Diaries (2001)
It took them 23 years to finally decide to make a sequel to ‘The Princess Diaries,’ so who’s onboard with it and who has so far moved on that the thought of Genovia fills them with horror? We’re here with the good good gist.

All We Know About The ‘The Princess Diaries 3’

We are no longer so far off from making a grand return to Genovia where another round of royal mayhem is possibly waiting for us. And director Adele Lim – another “die-hard fan” like some of us – has promised that the new sequel will honor the legacy of the first two.

“Miracles happen Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures. The fairy tale continues,” Anne Hathaway shared on Instagram, breaking the happy news after years of fan speculation.

However, prior to the big announcement, Meg Cabot, the author of the book which the franchise is based on,...

12 Biggest Changes The Princess Diaries Movies Make To The Books
Image
The Princess Diaries movies are based on the novels by Meg Cabot, and they made some significant changes to the source material. Following Mia, a high school student who discovers she's the princess of Genovia, The Princess Diaries movies were some of the most iconic teen movies of the early 2000s. Of course, with Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews leading the cast, it's no surprise they became a pop culture phenomenon.

While the movies try to stay true to Cabot's books, they do take some creative liberties. It's not always possible for movie adaptations to be exact replicas of the novels they are based on. Filmmakers often have to cut things, whether it's to save time or because they won't translate well on-screen. With The Princess Diaries 3 confirmed, it will be interesting to see which parts of Cabot's books are included in the next installment. As for the first two films,...

Chris Pine Isn't Sure If He's Returning for Princess Diaries 3
Image
The Princess Diaries 3 is currently in development at Disney but Chris Pine, who starred in the 2004 sequel, is unsure of his involvement in the project. Pine played the love interest of Anne Hathaways Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement, which earned over $134 million at the global box office. The Oscar-winning actress recently confirmed her involvement in the next installment, leaving fans wondering if they'll see more of Mias romance with Pines character, Lord Nicholas Devereaux. The Star Trek actor doesn't know the status of his role in the third film, so hes calling on fans to reach out to Disney boss Bob Iger directly to get the tea.

Chris Pine Doesn’t ‘Know Anything’ About Returning for ‘Princess Diaries 3’
Image
Chris Pine is as curious about “Princess Diaries 3” as the rest of us.

The actor, who co-led the 2004 franchise sequel “The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement,” said during “Today With Hoda & Jenna” that he has not been contacted about returning for the upcoming third film.

“Princess Diaries 3” was confirmed by Disney in 2022. Flora Greeson is writing the script, with “Joy Ride” filmmaker and “Crazy Rich Asians” co-screenwriter Adele Lim directing.

“I don’t know anything,” Pine said. “Call Disney! Call [Disney CEO] Bob Iger!”

He added, “The answer is, I’ve got to see. I don’t know anything about it. I think it’s fantastic.”

Pine played Nicholas, who was part of an enemies to lovers storyline with Anne Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis. The sequel ended with their marriage. The third film will serve as a continuation of the original film series, which began in 2001 and was based on Meg Cabot’s novel series.

Is The Princess Diaries Genovia A Real Country?
Image
The Princess Diaries and its 2004 sequel, The Princess Diaries: Royal Engagement are tied to a European country called Genovia. Adapted from Meg Cabots best-selling novels about an American teenager who discovers she's actually the princess of a small European country, The Princess Diaries was one of the best teen movies of the early 2000s. Anne Hathaway has appeared in several other movies after The Princess Diaries, but her role as Mia in the teenage drama remains memorable.

Following the success of the first two Princess Diaries movies, there have been rumors about whether a sequel would happen. In 2022, Disney officially announced that there would indeed be a third installment in the franchise and that it was in development (via The Hollywood Reporter). Now that The Princess Diaries 3 has been confirmed with Hathaway reprising her role as Mia, Genovia is sure to make a return.

Princess Diaries 3 | Adele Lim to direct
Adele Lim at an event for Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
Long awaited sequel The Princess Diaries 3 is finally moving forward, with Adele Lim to direct.

2001’s The Princess Diaries and it’s 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries: A Royal Engagement have become beloved family favourites over the years. Chronicling Anne Hathaway’s Mia as Julie Andrews’ Queen helps her transform from an ordinary teenager into Princess of Genovia, the characters from Meg Cabot’s long running book series were brilliantly brought to the screen by director Garry Marshall and screenwriters Gina Wendkos and Shonda Rhimes, respectively.

It was reported back in 2022 that a third film was in the works at Disney, with the screenplay penned by Supergirl writer Aadrita Mukerji. But it’s taken quite a while since then to actually get to fruition.

Still, according to Deadline, Crazy Rich Asians writer Adele Lim will direct the film. Original producer Debra Martin Chase is also onboard, with Lim’s producing partner...

What Happened to Michael in Princess Diaries 2?
Image
The Princess Diaries is a classic Disney film that put Anne Hathaway on the map in 2001. A coming-of-age comedy about Mia Thermopolis, an average girl who learns she's long-lost European royalty, the film and its 2004 sequel were based on a series of novels by Meg Cabot. Unfortunately, however, one big change was made to Mia's love life.

In the original film, Mia crushes on Michael Moscovitz but his character is nowhere to be seen in the sequel, The Princess Bride 2: Royal Engagement, despite being fairly prominent in the source material. The reason for Michael's absence had an entirely real-world explanation, and it led to Mia instead romancing Nicholas Deveraux, played by Chris Pine.

Updated by Jordan Iacobucci on August 31, 2024: The Princess Diaries franchise reminds a beloved staple of early 2000s comedies, with many members of its main cast going on to become major stars in the decades that followed.

The 2000s Were the Pinnacle of Mean Girl Cinema
Image
This article is part of IndieWire’s 2000s Week celebration. Click here for a whole lot more.

In 2002, author Rosalind Wiseman published a self-help book entitled “Queen Bees and Wannabes,” aimed at helping parents of high school-aged girls deal with the vicious effects of bullying on their daughters. Wiseman could not have possibly predicted what came next: that Tina Fey would a) read the book, b) see some of her own high school experience reflected back to her, and c) call up Lorne Michaels and suggest the non-fiction book would make a banger of a high school comedy. Some people have all the luck, don’t they?

What Fey saw in Wiseman’s relatively dry book was timeless — there have always been instances of “girl on girl crime,” and they sure as hell weren’t stopping — but when the comedic icon turned Wiseman’s work into the enduring early aughts offering “Mean Girls,...

Chris Pine Reminisces About 'Earth-Shattering' Princess Diaries Role
Image
Chris Pine has a storied Hollywood career with roles in franchises like Star Trek and Wonder Woman. However, the actor still fondly remembers his big break, which came when he was cast as Nicholas Devereaux in 2004's The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

During an appearance on Sunday Sitdown with Willie Geist, Pine explained how being cast as the love interest of Anne Hathaway's Mia Thermopolis changed his life. "It was the height of summer, and I was getting off at Magnolia. I was on my little Verizon tiny little flip phone, my silver one, and I got a call from my agent [saying] that I booked the job," he said. "I pulled over onto the side of the freeway, and they said, 'You're getting paid $65,000.' It was like they had just told me I'd made $50 million. It was absolutely earth-shattering."

Anne Hathaway Says ‘The Princess Diaries 3’ Development ‘Is in a Good Place,’ but ‘There’s Nothing to Announce Yet’
Image
It’s been well over a year since news first broke that Disney was moving forward with “The Princess Diaries 3.” Anne Hathaway can’t reveal any details, but she did assure fans in a recent V magazine interview that development continues on the long-anticipated sequel, and the intention remains to get it off the ground.

Anne Hathaway Offers Disappointing Princess Diaries 3 Update
Image
Anne Hathaway has offered a rather disappointing update on the development status of The Princess Diaries 3. Based on Meg Cabot's best-selling books, The Princess Diaries franchise gave Hathaway her breakout role as Mia when the first film came out in 2001. The story saw Hathaway's awkward American teenager learning through her grandmother, played by Dame Julie Andrews, that she is the heir to the throne of a European Kingdom. Hathaway and Andrews also reteamed for a sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement which came out in 2004. While both movies received mixed reviews from critics, they proved to be huge commercial successes, with the film series becoming a pop-culture staple. “We feel the exact same, and I know it’s probably very frustrating,” she told People. “It’s a process that requires patience, and so everybody should consider themselves a part of the movie business now, because this is how long it actually takes to make things.”

It was in November when it was confirmed that another chapter of The Princess Diaries saga was in the works at Disney and being penned by Aadrita Mukerji. Debra Martin Chase was also reported to be returning to produce the new film.

Hathaway, who has not officially signed for the new film, had expressed interest in being part of a new Princess Diaries movie. Back in October 2022, the...

Princess Diaries Fans Demand Original Cast Returns For Threequel

Princess Diaries fans express their desire to see original cast in Princess Diaries 3. Princess Diaries 2, a sequel starring Hathaway, Andrews, and Chris Pine, came out in 2004. Now, nearly two decades later, Disney is reportedly in development on a third Princess Diaries installment.

With the news broken, Princess Diaries fans are demanding the return of the original cast in the upcoming sequel. Princess Diaries sequel is in the works at Disney – but will Anne Hathaway return?
Image
Fans of hectic Mustang rides, etiquette lessons and Anne Hathaway, rejoice! Another Princess Diaries film is on the way from Disney.

Supergirl and Reacher writer Aadrita Mukerji is writing a script for a third film in the franchise, which is thought to be a sequel to the films starring Hathaway, as opposed to a reboot.

According to The Hollywood Reporter’s sources, Hathaway does not yet have a deal to reprise her role, but it is hoped she will sign up to the project once it moves beyond script stage.

The actor has, however, voiced her enthusiasm for the idea of a third film in the past. “There is a script for the third movie. There is a script,” she said during a January 2019 appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen. “I want to do it. Julie [Andrews] wants to do it. Debra Martin Chase, our producer, wants to do it.

Disney Looking To Make The Princess Diaries 3 A Reality
Image
Though it pings on the news radar from time to time, there has been very little concrete development on a third The Princess Diaries film. And the death of Garry Marshall, who directed both the 2001 original and its 2004 sequel, subtitled Royal Engagement took the wind even more out of its sails. Yet Disney – which saw the first two films earn more than 300 million collectively at the box office and build a big fanbase — is not ready to let go of Genovia. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the pieces are slowly falling into place for a third movie.

For those who might somehow be unaware, the Princess Diaries films adapt Meg Cabot's novel series, and focus on Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), a gawky San Francisco teenager who discovers that her late father was Crown Prince of a small European country called Genovia.

Grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews) attempts to...

Princess Diaries 3 in development at Disney
Image
Long live Queen Mia Thermopolis! THR has reported that Disney has tapped Aadrita Mukerji (Supergirl) to pen the script for The Princess Diaries 3. It’s been nearly two decades since the last installment of the Anne Hathaway-led franchise, but sources tell THR that this will be a continuation rather than a reboot.

Based on the novel by Meg Cabot, The Princess Diaries starred Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, an American teenager who discovers that she’s the heir to the throne of the kingdom of Genovia. Also starring Julie Andrews as Mia’s grandmother and Queen regent of Genovia, the film was an unexpected success and was followed by Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement three years later. It’s not yet known if Anne Hathaway will return for The Princess Diaries 3, but we may not know anything either way until she takes a look at the script.

Princess Diaries 3 Is In Development
Image
Hold on to your nostalgia, because a new Princess Diaries film is officially in the works at Disney. Based on Meg Cabot’s novels of the same name, the iconic 2001 rom-com catapulted a young Anne Hathaway to fame and is still among the most-treasured cult classics in the genre. In true early 2000s fashion, the film was every bit the perfect coming-of-age drama, telling the story of textbook awkward teen Mia Thermopolis (Hathaway), who prefers to keep out of the spotlight. Her out-of-sight-out-of-mind norm is thrown out of the window when she learns she is heir to the crown of a small European kingdom called Genovia. Under the guidance of her stringent grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Julie Andrews), Mia takes part in an elaborate transformative princess boot camp to ensure she is worthy of her new title. The film was an immediate hit and saw Hathaway and Andrews return for...

Princess Diaries 3 In Development: Would Continue Anne Hathaway's Story
Image
After nearly two decades of talks, The Princess Diaries 3 is finally in development at Disney. The franchise revolves around Anne Hathaway's Mia Thermopolis, an unpopular teenager who discovered she was the heir to the European kingdom of Genovia. The Princess Diaries movies are hailed as one of Hathaway's launch points in her career, with the young star scoring widespread acclaim for her performance in the first film, while garnering positive reviews in the poorly received sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement.

The Hollywood Reporter has brought word that Disney is officially developing The Princess Diaries 3. The project, which is described as being a continuation of Hathaway's story, is set to be penned by Aadrita Mukerji. At the time of writing, Hathaway has not signed a deal to return for the sequel, though original producer Debra Martin is returning for The Princess Diaries 3 while The Other Woman's Melissa Stack is executive producing.

New ‘Princess Diaries’ Movie in Development at Disney
David Harewood, Chyler Leigh, Jesse Rath, Azie Tesfai, Melissa Benoist, Katie McGrath, and Nicole Maines in Supergirl (2015)
Miracles happen, once in awhile, when you believe! Today’s miracle is that a third “Princess Diaries” movie is in development.

According to an insider with knowledge of the project, “Supergirl” writer Aadrita Mukerji will pen the script for Disney, marking the third installment in the Anne Hathaway-led series. That said, Hathaway has not struck a deal to return yet, but has been openly supportive of the franchise continuing. Reps for Hathaway did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.

The first two “Princess Diaries” films starred Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis, who learns very suddenly that she is actually a princess, and the heir apparent in the country of Genovia. Her grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, was played by Julie Andrews in both films.

In recent months, Andrews cast doubt on another movie ever being made, telling Jimmy Fallon in June, “Honestly, I doubt it, because I’m that much older,...

‘The Princess Diaries’ Threequel Written By Aadrita Mukerji In Works At Disney
Image
A third Princess Diaries film penned by Aadrita Mukerji is in the works at Disney, Deadline can confirm.

Two-time Emmy nominee Debra Martin Chase will return to produce the new film after working on both past installments, with Melissa K. Stack — who scripted the comedy The Other Woman with Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton — to serve as executive producer.

The Princess Diaries is a coming-of-age comedy based on the popular novel series by Meg Cabot, which Disney released in 2001. Pic tells the story of Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway), a San Francisco teenager who comes to discover she is the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia. Julie Andrews co-starred in both that film and the 2004 sequel The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement as Mia’s grandmother and Genovia’s Queen regent, Clarisse Renaldi, with the two big-screen releases collectively grossing over 299 worldwide. New ‘Princess Diaries’ Movie in the Works at Disney

The Princess of Genovia is back!

An individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire that a third “Princess Diaries” film is currently in early development. The script is being penned by Aadrita Mukerji (“Supergirl”), as The Hollywood Reporter first noted. The third film will serve as a continuation of the original film series as a sequel to the 2001 and 2004 movies starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews.

No casting announcements have been made. Sources would not confirm whether Anne Hathaway will reprise her role, yet the “Princess Diaries” breakout star previously voiced her support for a proposed third film.

“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” Hathaway told Entertainment Tonight in October 2022. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.

‘Princess Diaries 3’ in the Works at Disney, Anne Hathaway Not Yet Confirmed
Image
Disney is returning to Genovia for a third “Princess Diaries” movie.

It’s not clear whether Anne Hathaway will reprise her role as the down-to-earth royal Mia Thermopolis in the new installment, which is being written by Aadrita Mukerji. However, Hathaway recently expressed her interest in returning — with her on-screen grandmother Julie Andrews, who played the posh Queen Clarisse Renaldi — to the franchise that turned her into a star.

“I would more than entertain it, I’m pulling for it,” Hathaway told Entertainment Tonight. “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work.”

Andrews’ involvement in “The Princess Diaries 3” is similarly ambiguous. Plot details haven’t been confirmed, but the threequel is expected to continue the story in “The Princess Diaries” and the sequel “Royal Engagement” rather than rebooting the series.

Directed by the late Garry Marshall and based on the novel by Meg Cabot,...

Disney is returning to the world of The Princess Diaries.

Aadrita Mukerji is penning a script for a new installment for Disney, which sources say is a continuation of the Anne Hathaway-led series of films rather than a reboot.

Hathaway does not have a deal to return, according to sources, but she has publicly stated her support for a third installment, and the hope is she would return should the potential new film move forward beyond the script stage.

Hathaway starred in 2001’s The Princess Diaries as an American teenager who learns she is heir to the throne of the European kingdom of Genovia. Anne Hathaway Is Still Pushing For Princess Diaries 3
Image
Anna Hathaway says she still wants to make The Princess Diaries 3 happen. Hathaway, now an acclaimed, Oscar-winning Hollywood star, had her feature debut with The Princess Diaries in 2001 at just 18 years old. Based on Meg Cabot's young adult novel series on the same name, the film centered on Amelia Mignonette Grimaldi Thermopolis Renaldi (Hathaway), a timid teen that learns she is the sole heir to a kingdom. Julie Andrews starred alongside Hathaway as Mia's paternal grandmother, the current queen of the kingdom and the bearer of the news.

Hathaway and Andrews, along with director Garry Marshall, all returned for a sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement, in 2004. Both films spawned plenty of Internet memes and continue to be referenced in pop culture, proving the lasting impact of the nostalgic franchise. Though the sequel film saw the reluctant princess settle into her royal role, the many novels of...

The Next Princess Diaries Book Explores a "Suspected Royal Affair"

Not all is well in Genovia. On Aug. 25, Princess Diaries author Meg Cabot announced that Princess Mia and the citizens of her fictional European country will be returning in the 12th installment of the book series, "The Quarantine Princess Diaries." The 300-page novel will be Cabot's first Princess Diaries release in seven years, preceded by "Royal Wedding: A Princess Diaries Novel" (2015). Set during the Covid-19 pandemic, the book will detail Princess Mia's personal and professional struggles as the people of Genovia - including the "dysfunctional" royal family - attempt to navigate their rapidly changing environment.

Beyond managing political strife and complex family dynamics, Mia might become intertwined in a "suspected royal affair." For fans of the two-part Disney film series, Mia's love triangle between Nicholas Devereaux (Chris Pine) and Andrew Jacoby (Callum Blue) was entrancing enough. But now that Mia has a pandemic to handle and an entire country to run,...
