Los Angeles Team Mentoring hosted its annual Soiree on Thursday, October 5th, 2023, at the Beverly Wilshire in Beverly Hills.

The foundation was celebrating their 31st year mentoring at-risk middle school youth while honoring the National Football League Players Association (Nflpa) and Entrepreneur, Mentor, Bestselling Author, Discovery’s Undercover Billionaire star Glenn Stearns. The annual Soiree is the organization’s signature fundraising event, which ensures hundreds of volunteer mentors are able to provide critical mentoring services to over 1,000 at-risk youth for an entire school year.

The black-tie gala was attended by Impact Award honoree Glenn Stearns & wife Mindy Stearns, Dr. Bassey Akpan manager of player wellness at Nflpa, former professional football player Marvel Smith, actor Kurt Caceres, and featuring an exclusive live performance and appearance by Jay Leno.

Premiering at drive-ins and theaters across the United States today is Murder in the Woods, a Latino-led horror movie that pays homage to slasher classics, while not leaning into character stereotypes. The Descent arguably made being stuck underground scary again, with intelligent use of the darkness and just a hint of claustrophobia half of the job of scaring the audience was done before the creatures even made an appearance on screen. Beneath may not want to be compared to Neil Marshall’s movie, but as a fan I can’t help but compare the two.

Beneath may claim it is inspired by true events, but we know that this is a statement that is used as a marketing tool to get attention but means nothing when it comes to historical fact. In the movie we see a crew of coal miners trapped 600 feet below the ground.

Ben Ketai's (30 Days of Night) second feature film as director is the horror title Beneath. This film was recently released on video-on-demand, through IFC Films. And, this is one horror film that viewers should take notice of. Dealing with trapped miners deep below ground, the writing team of Patrick Doody and Chris Valenziano introduce a supernatural element, born of hell. Lots of thrills can be found in Beneath, with the lighting standing out as the film's strongest element. There is a lot of mystery and a lot of tension in this exciting, horror outing. Inspired by actual events: at a coal mine in a blue-collar town it's the last day of work for veteran miner George Marsh (Jeff Fahey). His daughter Samantha (Kelly Noonan), a feisty environmental lawyer whose politics are bitterly opposed by her father, celebrates the occasion by accompanying him underground. She's escorted by old flame Randy Bennings (Joey Kern); no sooner do they descend to the coal face, however, than a drilling machine malfunctions and punches through a supporting wall.

IFC Films has debuted a trailer for Ben Ketai's Beneath, not to be confused with the other Beneath horror directed by Larry Fessenden. This one is about coal miners who end up trapped after a mine collapse, and one of them is a very pretty coal miner's daughter (go figure), played by Kelly Noonan.
