One of its surprise hits is the French action thriller Ad Vitam. The series premiered on the platform on Jan. 10, 2025, and has been raking in major views since its release, dominating the non-English charts. The film's ongoing popularity led to Ad Vitam joining Netflix's Most Popular Non-English Movies list, per Tudum.

The French crime thriller Ad Vitam, which currently sits atop the Netflixmovie charts, takes us on an action-packed journey through Paris complete with exciting chase scenes, government conspiracies, and a satisfying twist. Both Franck and Léo were part of the Gign—an elite tactical unit within France's National Gendarmerie—but when Franck inadvertently intervenes in a covert government operation, the consequences are deadlier than he could have imagined. Ad Vitam Cast & Character Guide
Image
Netflix's latest movie, Ad Vitam, includes a small ensemble of talented French actors. Directed by Rodolphe Lauga, the Netflix international movie is currently the number one non-English film on the streaming platform. Ad Vitam follows Franck, a former member of the elite French tactical police, the Gign, as he is forced to delve into his past after his pregnant wife is kidnapped. While Ad Vitam uses a similar plotline that several films in the genre employ, it sets itself apart with its action and incredible performances from its cast.

Since most of the actors in Ad Vitam are French, they might not be familiar to an American audience, but they've featured in several French movies and TV Shows. The Netflix action movie is engaging from start to finish, with an intense storyline that makes audiences root for the primary protagonist. Although there's a lot to like about Ad Vitam,...

What Does the Title of Netflix's 'Ad Vitam' Mean?
Image
Ad Vitam has been climbing Netflix's charts, leaving some viewers confused by the film's title. The title of the movie is almost as mysterious as the film's plot, which follows a former police officer who has to save his wife from kidnappers. The chase sends him through France, and he has to use his officer skills to track down the officers while also avoiding being framed.

The French thriller's action-packed sequences and conspiracy-centered plot make the film's historically based name even more intriguing. The title comes from a mixture of ancient Rome and legal terms throughout history, which seems odd for a thriller. However, the meaning of Ad Vitam connects very closely to what happens in the movie and has a deeper meaning that some viewers might miss.

A French Action Thriller Just Became A Global Streaming Hit On Netflix

We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

When done with a modicum of proficiency, action movies are pure cinema. They are kinetic, ecstatic, and occasionally balletic. Whether we're watching hand-to-hand brawls, bullet-whizzing shootouts, or tire-squealing car chases, action cinema holds the potential to leave us gasping and cheering as stunt people (or combat-trained actors) strut their fearless stuff. And if the director is skilled enough to inventively storyboard, shot-by-chaotic-shot, the mayhem unfolding on the screen, your reward is nothing short of bliss.

While the action films of maestros like John Woo, Jackie Chan, and Walter Hill make life worth living, a true movie junkie can get their daily fix from a down-and-dirty formula flick laden with crudely executed punch-ups and twisted-metal set pieces. There is a nobility to this kind of filmmaking. In her vital essay "Trash, Art and the Movies," legendary film critic Pauline Kael wrote,...

‘Ad Vitam’ Review: Guillaume Canet Tries to Launch a Netflix Action Franchise in Overstuffed Thriller
Image
Guillaume Canet makes like Bruce Willis and other past regular-guy-as-action-hero models in “Ad Vitam,” which he co-wrote. The entertaining Netflix concoction stars Canet as a Parisian ex-cop forcibly pulled into new perils connected to the shootout that got him sacked. Putting its hero through paces that embrace everything from parkour to parasailing, Rodolphe Lauga’s feature is not dull. But it is increasingly hard to take seriously, as the script veers between gritty thriller terrain to the kind of overscaled set-pieces more apt for James Bond.

Those elements’ failure to gel gets exacerbated by an awkward story structure whose midsection is a long, two-part flashback. The splashy yet vague end result feels like a hoped-for launch to a franchise that lacks the distinct character to become one — in trying to be too many things at once, it emerges a slippery composite of familiar genre concepts.

At the start, Franck Lazarev...

'Ad Vitam' Tops Netflix Streaming Chart, Peaks on Global List
Image
Netflix has continued to bring some incredibly popular action movies to streaming, and not just those from U.S. studios. Their new chart-topping release is the French movie Ad Vitam, which has already been compared to Liam Neeson’s Taken – even if its reviews have fallen a little short of that classic tale of skills and revenge. Having landed on the platform on January 10, the movie immediately overtook popular titles like Despicable Me and the Rush Hour trilogy to claim the number one spot easily.

Action movies have been the name of the game for many streamers in recent years, with movies from veterans like Van Damme and Statham charting high alongside new movies like Carry-On and Rebel Ridge. Now Ad Vitam has provided thrill-seekers with another blistering movie to usher them into a new year of movies. The action thriller is directed by Rodolphe Lauga, with Guillaume Canet starring as Franck,...

‘Ad Vitam’ Movie Cast And Characters Guide
Image
The central struggle of Netflix’s French action thriller, Ad Vitam, hinges upon the age-old question of whether the concept of nationalism equates loyalty to the state or to the ones who control the power dynamics of the state. While the execution of the theme left much to be desired due to a lackluster script, the performance by the ensemble cast was strong enough to keep the audience entertained.

Franck Lazarev Played By Guillaume Canet

French actor, director, and screenwriter Guillaume Canet has been active in the movie industry for over the last three decades and has starred in acclaimed movies like the crime noir Next Time, I’ll Aim for the Heart, the adventure drama titled The Beach, and the thrilling Tell No One, which was also directed by him.

In Ad Vitam, Guillaume Canet plays the lead role of former Gign Captain Franck Lazarev, whose quest to serve...

Ad Vitam Review: Action Meets Ambition
Image
The French action thriller Ad Vitam, directed by Rodolphe Lauga, attempts to mix adrenaline with existential themes. The film, which stars Guillaume Canet as Franck, a former elite Gign officer, examines duty and family ties. The Latin word for “for life” in the title suggests an intellectual depth that the book often avoids.

When masked attackers kidnap Franck’s pregnant wife, Léo (Stéphane Caillard), the narrative begins, sending him on a bloody mission. But instead of a well-thought-out story, we get a rough outline of well-known plot points.

Franck feels guilty about a terrible event that ruined his job. This history is interesting to learn about, but it’s told through forced flashbacks. When does an action movie become more serious? This is the question it begs.

Léo represents vulnerability and power, consistent with larger societal themes about gender roles in action films. Even though she has trained, she often plays the damsel in trouble,...

‘Ad Vitam’ Netflix Review: Guillaume Canet Almost Gives Tom Cruise A Run For His Money In French Action Film
Image
Tom Cruise is considered the biggest action star working right now, and for good reason. He is in his 60s, he is still running as fast as some of the most brilliant athletes out there and performing the wildest vehicular stunts imaginable. And it doesn’t seem like he is in the mood to vacate that throne yet. But that doesn’t mean actors from all over the globe aren’t trying to live up to the standards he has set, especially in terms of doing their own stunts. Raymond Lam Fung knocked it out of the park in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In. Dev Patel was excellent in Monkey Man. Emilio Sakraya took everyone’s breath away in Sixty Minutes. Jun Jong-seo surprised everyone in Ballerina. The work done by Alban Lenoir in the two Lost Bullet films are inspirational. Joe Taslim, Iko Uwais, Cecep Arif Rahman, Julie Estelle,...

“Ad Vitam” on Netflix: A French Thriller That Blends Action and Character Study
Image
“Ad Vitam” is a thriller movie directed by Rodolphe Lauga starring Guillaume Canet, with Stéphane Caillard and Nassim Lyes.

Netflix’s latest release, “Ad Vitam”, is a French thriller that attempts to balance high-octane action with a deep dive into the psyche of its protagonist. Directed by Rodolphe Lauga and starring Guillaume Canet, the film presents a familiar yet engaging narrative that should satisfy fans of the genre.

As he races against time to save his spouse, he becomes entangled in an international arms dealing conspiracy.

“Ad Vitam” distinguishes itself from typical Hollywood fare by taking a more measured approach to storytelling. The film’s structure, while not groundbreaking, proves effective. It...

India’s Zee to Focus on Internal Growth After Formally Giving Up on Merger Aspirations – Global Bulletin
Image
Zee End Is Nigh

Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd., the disappointed bride in the failed engagement between Zee and Sony India, has formally ended its quest for a merger. On Tuesday, it withdrew its application before the industry regulator National Company Law Tribunal and said that it will focus instead on internal growth. Pulling the Nclt application also makes it somewhat easier for Zee to pursue its arbitration and other legal actions against Sony.

The plan to merge the two mid-size film and TV businesses was on the table for over two years, but finally (acrimoniously) collapsed in January 2024. Sony is also seeking restitution from Zee, which it says failed to live up to the agreed merger terms. Since the wedding bells stopped ringing, Zee has also announced that it will slice its workforce by 15%.

War of the Worlds Season 1 Recap: Aliens, Cyborg Dogs, Emily, Sacha and the Mystery Tattoo
Image
Warning: contains major spoilers for War of the Worlds season one.

The first thing to remember about Howard Overman’s moodily atmospheric War of the Worlds is that if novelist H.G. Wells were here today (and had the required TV streaming package), he probably wouldn’t recognise it as his story. Aside from an alien invasion that wipes out much of Earth’s population, the TV drama had little crossover with Wells’ novel. Instead of tripods with heat rays, it had cyborg dogs with machine gun heads. Instead of a solitary journalist wandering around Woking, it had a large cast of scientists, soldiers, teenagers and others, spread across the UK and France. Instead of dealing with themes of colonial imperialism, it was mostly about family and loss. And instead of red weed-spreading Martians it had… well, that’s the question. Ahead of season two’s arrival on Epix in the...

‘Supergirl’ Star Azie Tesfai Suits Up As Guardian In First Look Photo (TV News Roundup)
Image
The CW released the first look at Azie Tesfai’s Guardian, who will appear in the sixth and final season of “Supergirl.”

Kelly Olsen (Tesfai) will take on the mantle of Guardian in the second half of the final season. The series previously hinted that Kelly will take up the mantle left by her brother, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), which will come to fruition in the upcoming episode “Blind Spots.” Co-written by Tesfai and co-producer J. Holtham, the episode is said to address racial inequality. “Arrow” star David Ramsey will direct the episode and reprise his role of John Diggle.

“Supergirl” follows the DC character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), who balances her work as a reporter for CatCo Worldwide Media with keeping National City safe from sinister threats as the titular superhero. The series also stars Tesfai, David Harewood, Jesse Rath, Nicole Maines and Katie McGrath. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter,...

War of the Worlds Season 2 Filming Now
Image
Eerie, desolate sci-fi series War of the Worlds aired in France in late 2019 and earlier this year in the Us and UK. Less an adaptation of the titular H.G. Wells novel than a contemporary riff on the alien invasion thriller by creator Howard Overman, it resolutely ploughed its own furrow. Moody, atmospheric, bleak and emotional, it swapped red weed, tripods and heat rays for a grief-soaked meditation on family and survival… with terrifying alien robot sniper dogs.

The series’ second run commission has been an open secret for months, but the official stamp was announced this weekend, with filming due to begin on Monday the 13th of July after a dry run of the new Covid-19 filming protocol took place last Friday.

Deadline, speaking to Urban Myth producer Johnny Capps reported on the meticulous planning and procedures in place to film the second series in the midst of a global coronavirus pandemic.

Olivier Abbou's French Film Furie Debuts a Hellstorm in these Early Stills
Brad Pitt, Shia LaBeouf, Logan Lerman, Michael Peña, and Jon Bernthal in Fury (2014)
Furie is a French and Belgium feature. This title looks at a family, returning from a holiday. Unfortunately, squatters have take over their home. Furie, also known as Get In or Die Trying (Uhm), has had a run on the film festival circuit, in 2019. Supposedly based on a true story, this feature has begun a home entertainment release in Europe. Directed by Olivier Abbou, this film centrally stars: Adama Niane (Baise-moi), Stéphane Caillard (The Take) and Paul Hamy. A trailer for the film was released in 2019 (found below) and new stills are available here, as well. The trailer is exclusively in French, with French subtitles. Some of the dialogue mentions: "no response on the phone," "squatters," "missing children" and a "plan." This Canadian's French could still use some improvement. However, the trailer does show one family struggling with a difficult situation, while terrorized by a group intent on class warfare.

Behind the Scenes With Gabriel Byrne, Elizabeth McGovern on ‘War of the Worlds’
Gabriel Byrne
“To carry a secret is a great thing,” says Gabriel Byrne, reflecting on his latest role. “You never have to show the secret, because the audience knows it… and they’ll do the work for you in that situation.”

The actor was doing press rounds for a new, and very loose adaptation of “War of the Worlds,” from Urban Myth, Canal Plus, Fox Networks Group Europe & Africa, Agc Television, and Studiocanal – a powerful combination – which updates H.G. Wells’ alien invasion novel by grounding the story in the here-and-now and by focusing more on character than on spectacle.

Functioning instead as a survival thriller set in both England and France, the eight-episode series follows a diverse group living in the aftermath of a cataclysmic attack that has wiped out most life on Earth.

Written and created by BAFTA winner Howard Overman (“Misfits”) and produced by Urban Myth Films, the sci-fi...

‘The War of the Worlds’ Trailer Drops From the BBC (Watch)
The BBC has dropped a trailer for its upcoming adaptation of H.G. Wells’ alien-invasion classic, “The War of the Worlds.”

Set in Edwardian England, in the southern English county of Surrey, the three-part series stars Rafe Spall (“Jurassic World: Fallen Kingfom”), Eleanor Tomlinson (“Poldark”), Rupert Graves (“Sherlock”) and Robert Carlyle (“The Full Monty”) as earthlings caught up in the panic after a meteor bearing extermination-minded aliens lands in the usually placid British countryside. Craig Viveiros directs.

The series will be broadcast on flagship channel BBC One this fall. ITV Studios has sold the show to major European countries and more than 50 African territories.

Spall plays George, a man who escapes his failing marriage to begin a new life with Amy (Tomlinson), despite societal disapproval. Graves plays George’s brother and Carlyle an astronomer.

The production is one of two warring “War of the Worlds” TV adaptations. The other, spanning eight episodes,...

War of the Worlds TV Series Set, Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern to Star
Joseph Baxter Jan 29, 2019

Yet another television adaptation of H.G. Wells’s War of the Worlds is in the works, this time from Fox Networks Group.

War of the Worlds, the template-setting 1898 alien invasion sci-fi novel by H.G. Wells, has certainly seen its share of adaptations over its century-plus existence; a multi-medium collection that will soon add a promising miniseries by the BBC. However, Urban Myth Films is prepping its own television take on the classic story of extraterrestrial conflagration. Moreover, the series has procured a pair of prestigious stars for its effort.

Gabriel Byrne and Elizabeth McGovern will headline a War of the Worlds television series. This adaptation – arriving as eight 60-minute episodes – puts Wells’s story through the lens of modernization, manifesting as a contemporary-set reimagining of the tale; a stark distinction from the BBC miniseries, which adapts a more traditional setting for the story in the brief 1901-1910 era of Edwardian England.
