Here Are All the Songs in Lena Dunham’s ‘Too Much’
Image
Lena Dunham is making her return to TV with Netflix’s “Too Much,” which comes with a soundtrack perfect for both crash outs and healing moments.

“Too Much” follows Jessica (Megan Stalter), an American who moves to London after a devastating breakup and meets Felix (Will Sharpe), a charming British musician — mirroring Dunham’s own experience of meeting her husband, British musician Luis Felber. So, it’s only fitting that Felber, who also serves as a writer and executive producer on the show, heads up music alongside Matt Allchin.

From party hits like “London Bridge” by Fergie, “Tap In” by Saweetie and “Girls” by the Dare to tender ballads like “Praying” by Kesha and “Slow Like Honey” by Fiona Apple, “Too Much” has something for everyone.

Trying to win favor in the eyes of his daughter, single father, John Cale (Tatum) scores tickets to a one-of-a-kind tour of the White House. An Afghanistan veteran, John now works as a Capitol policeman but...

‘The Bear’ Season 4 Soundtrack: From The Ronettes To Oasis

FX’s The Bear Season 4 has been out for a week streaming on Hulu.

The series, which was renewed for a fifth season yesterday, has become known for its needle drops as well as its rotation of guest stars each season. While she didn’t have a song featured in Season 1, the show has come to include at least one Taylor Swift song since Season 2, because it wouldn’t be a heartfelt moment for Ebon Moss Bachrach’s Richie and his daughter without help from the songstress.

Season 2 of the show contained “Love Story” in the seventh episode, “Forks,” and Swift’s “Long Live” was featured in Season 3.

‘Ron Delsener Presents’ Review: Nostalgia and Moxie Infuse an Affectionate Portrait of a Groundbreaking Music Promoter
Image
For music-loving New Yorkers who grew up in the pre-digital age, the title of Jake Sumner’s first feature-length film needs no explanation. Beginning in the 1960s, countless newspaper ads announcing the rock and pop concerts that were reshaping showbiz began with three words: “Ron Delsener Presents.”

What Sumner presents is an exuberant look at some of those shows and artists, and a chance to spend quality time with Delsener himself, who turns 89 this year. He officially retired in 2022, but, at least as of the 2023 completion date of the documentary, was still spry, in constant motion, and making deals. Like the impresario Sol Hurok, who was his inspiration — and whom he met, as it turned out, just in the nick of time — Delsener sees no reason to stop doing what he loves.

Delsener has done his share of networking and schmoozing, and his business acumen would ultimately have global reverberations.

John Mulaney Breaks Down the Music Powering ‘Everybody’s Live’

‘Everybody’s Live’ Reimagines Phish as ‘Seinfeld’ in Bizarre Sketch

Everybody’s Live With John Mulaney reimagined Phish as Seinfeld — or “Seinfeld, but it’s Phish,” as the host said — on the latest episode of Netflix’s late-night show.

With Phish in Los Angeles for their three-night stand at the Hollywood Bowl, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame-snubbed jam band put on wigs and stepped into a rundown version of Jerry Seinfeld’s “show about nothing” apartment for a bizarre three-minute sketch where Trey Anastasio portrayed Jerry, bassist Mike Gordon played George Costanza, keyboardist Page McConnell channeled Kramer, and...

Another SNL great joins Everybody's Live with John Mulaney tonight, April 30
Image
Netflix streams another brand-new episode of Everybody's Live with John Mulaney tonight, April 30. And once again, John Mulaney is calling in a Saturday Night Live great for some help.

So far, Everybody's Live has welcomed Saturday Night Live alumni Fred Armisen, Tracy Morgan, Ben Stiller, Vanessa Bayer, Pete Davidson, Aidy Bryant, Bill Hader, Tina Fey, and Conan O'Brien.

Tonight's all-new episode will feature Molly Shannon. The SNL alum appeared on the show from 1995 to 2001, becoming one of the best all-around performers of her era. Few Saturday Night Live cast members can match Shannon when it comes to physical comedy.

Shannon and Mulaney's paths never crossed during his tenure at Saturday Night Live. The writer arrived a year after Shannon hosted for the first time in 2007 and was long gone by the time Shannon hosted again in 2023.

However, Shannon did have a role to play in Saturday Night Live's 50th anniversary special.

Việt and Nam Review: A Swooning, Stirring Slow Cinema Romance
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2024 New York Film Festival coverage. Việt and Nam opens in theaters on March 28 from Strand Releasing.

“Leave the light on. It’s easier for me to dream.”

The opening shot of Việt and Nam, writer-director Trương Minh Quý’s sophomore film, is a feat of cinematic restraint. Nearly imperceivable white specs of dust begin to appear, few and far between, drifting from the top of a pitch-black screen to the bottom, where the faintest trace of something can be made out in the swallowing darkness. The sound design is cavernous and close, heaving with breath and trickling with the noise of running water. A boy incrementally appears, walking gradually from one corner of the screen to the other. He has another boy on his back. A dream is gently relayed in voiceover. Then, without the frame ever having truly revealed itself,...

Action Movie 'White House Down' With Channing Tatum Is Streaming Free From Next Month

Volcano and Dante's Peak. Deep Impact and Armageddon. As you can now ascertain from the title, White House Down’s cinematic partner is the Gerard Butler-led Olympus Has Fallen, both of which were released in 2013. All Tomorrow’s Parties by Koren Shadmi
Image
The Velvet Underground were famously the band who had only a very small fanbase while they were around – but, the joke went, every single one of those fans started bands of their own. So they were massively influential, which is nice, but not usually what people start rock bands to achieve.

Koren Shadmi’s 2023 graphic novel All Tomorrow’s Parties: The Velvet Underground Story tells the story of the band in comics format. It follows Shadmi’s previous nonfiction books Lugosi and The Twilight Man , more traditional pop-culture bios of a single person, as well as a number of Shadmi’s fictional works, like Bionic . He’s been making book-length comics for more than a decade now, through a bunch of variations, and clearly has the chops to do a more complicated book like this one, with multiple main characters and a lot of faces to get right on the page.

American Psycho Soundtrack: Every Song & When It Plays
Image
The American Psycho soundtrack boasts some classic rock and pop hits from the 1980s. Songs by New Order and Genesis have even become synonymous with the movie, given the crucial scenes in which they play. Based on the novel by Bret Easton Ellis and directed by Mary Harron, American Psycho revolves around a New York City banker who doubles as a serial killer at night. Rather than delving into familiar psychological thriller tropes, the highly quotable American Psycho takes a darkly comic approach as it decodes the consumerism and toxic masculinity that drives its twisted lead character, Patrick Bateman.

Music plays a chief role in American Psycho, given that Patrick has quite an interesting playlist. Despite the dark, homicidal things brewing in his mind, he listens to cheery songs while walking to the office. When he has visitors at his home, Patrick can also flaunt his record collection and break...

Paul Morrissey Dies: Experimental Filmmaker & Longtime Andy Warhol Collaborator Was 86
Image
Paul Morrissey, the avant-garde filmmaker who worked on Andy Warhol movies including Chelsea Girls, Flesh, Trash and others who also managed The Velvet Underground in the mid-1960s, died Monday. He was 86.

His archivist Michael Chaiken told The New York Times that Morrissey died of pneumonia in a Manhattan hospital.

Morrissey collaborated with Warhol on several ultralow-budget features focused on the NYC subculture, starting with 1965’s My Hustler through 1974’s Blood for Dracula aka Andy Warhol’s Dracula. Their experimental movies — on which Morrissey often served in roles also including cinematographer and editor — often featured non-pro actors including Joe Dallesandro and Candy Darling and generally were ad-libbed rather than scripted.

Their biggest commercial success — a relative term — was with Trash, the 1970 pic starring Dallesandro as and junkie gigolo and Holly Woodlawn as his wife. Other Morrissey-Warhol films include 1968’s Lonesome Cowboys and 1972’s Heat and Women in Revolt. The duo...

The Bear Season 3 Soundtrack Guide: Every Song & When They Play
Image
The Bear season 3 picks up where season 2 left off, telling the story of the titular restaurant set against a varied soundtrack consisting of many artists and songs both new and old. Since The Bear season 2's dramatic ending, audiences have been eagerly anticipating the continuation of creator Christopher Storer's intensely human story. The Bear tells tales of high-end dining and Michelin stars but is at its best when focusing on the people at the center of those stories, brought to life by The Bear season 3's excellent cast.

As of The Bear season 3's ending, each character receives their due share of screentime as they navigate work life, personal issues, and deep-rooted trauma against the backdrop of fine dining. Oftentimes, as a way to offset the emotionally heavy storylines of the show, Storer wisely integrates various songs from a vast collection of artists, as was the case with The Bear season 2's soundtrack.

Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down came out only three months apart in 2013, with both movies featuring similar premises. Six decades into his career, Cale is making music with a renewed sense of urgency—he hit a creative turning point in the pandemic, in a frenzy where he wrote 80 songs in a year. Yet he’s reached one of the most adventurous phases in his ever-eccentric career.

Here’s How John Cale Stays on the Cutting Edge at 82
Image
For six decades and counting, John Cale has lived on the edge of the avant-garde. A classically trained violist, he spent the mid-Sixties playing hours of drones with minimalist composer La Monte Young before co-founding the Velvet Underground with Lou Reed. The band transformed rock & roll into an art experiment, with Cale’s noisy electric viola flourishes and rejection of the genre’s verse-chorus-verse formality.

As a solo artist, he continued his experiments, combining classical and rock on 1972’s The Academy in Peril and 1973’s Paris 1919, embracing New Wave on 1981’s Honi Soit,...

John Cale ‘Poptical Illusion’ Review: The Uncharted Territory of Curiosity
Image
“If you’ve done things you’d wished you’ve never done/Think of the things you’re going to do tonight,” John Cale sings over bubbly synths on “Davies and Wales,” a track from his 18th studio album, Poptical Illusion. The Welsh musician has never shied away from playing with textures and sounds, exploring chamber pop, post-punk, R&b, and just about every genre in between. And each of the album’s songs feels like a kaleidoscope of sound that ebbs and flows between serene resonance and hauntingly frantic beats.

No two tracks on Poptical Illusion sound alike, paralleling the sense of change and uncertainty that informs Cale’s lyrics. Opener “God Make Me Do It (Don’t Ask Me Again)” introduces this concept—more like a fixation, really—with layers of digitized percussion, steady synthetic echoes, and Cale’s slow, deep vocals, while the hopeful “Edge of Reason...

The element of surprise by Anne-Katrin Titze
Wes Anderson
Wes Anderson’s favorite on-set still photographer James Hamilton with 99 Records founder Ed Bahlman and Anne-Katrin Titze on his Village Works exhibition: “They have a display of eight of my photographs, good size prints, including Lou Reed and John Cale and Pattie Smith and Tom Verlaine and Prince and Debbie Harry.”

In the first instalment with photojournalist James Hamilton, Wes Anderson’s favourite on-set still photographer (James is also the voice of Mole in Fantastic Mr. Fox and makes an appearance in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou), we start out discussing Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, Grace Kelly’s Mark Cross bag, the Albert Hotel, Harper’s Bazaar, and everything else that James Stewart’s Lb Jeffries eerily has in common with the subject of Dw Young’s surprisingly candid Uncropped (a highlight and centerpiece selection of the 14th edition of Doc NYC).

St. Vincent Says “Hallelujah” Covers Are “The Worst Thing in the World”
Image
St. Vincent is tired of singers covering Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” while stripping away its original meaning. In a recent interview with BBC Radio, she called such covers “the worst thing in the world.”

Speaking to host Jo Whiley, the artist born Annie Clark praised “Hallelujah” as an “absolute masterpiece” and referenced how it took Cohen “many years to write” the song.

“[It’s] about the complication that it is to be alive — and the agony and the ecstasy and everything and all of the inherent conflict therein,” she continued, before blasting awful covers of “Hallelujah” on televised singing competitions.

“Then you know how for a period of time it became a song that people would, like, cover on American Idol? People would sing it on American Idol and just be like [imitates vocal fry tone], ‘Haaalelujah! Halleluuuujah!’ And it’s just the worst thing in the world. Like, it’s...

John Cale Announces New Album POPtical Illusion, Shares New Song “How We See the Light”: Stream
Image
John Cale has announced his 18th studio album, POPtical Illusion, arriving on June 14th via Double Six/Domino.

The announcement arrives just over a year after Cale’s last album, Mercy, which was his first solo album in seven years. For POPtical Illusion, the Welsh musician and composer has teamed up once again with regular collaborator Nita Scott, and centered his sound on a more hopeful attitude than Mercy. According to a press release, Cale is keeping his gaze toward the future on POPtical Illusion: “[Cale] foregoes the illustrious cast to burrow mostly alone into mazes of synthesizers and samples, organs and pianos, with words that, as far as Cale goes, constitute a sort of swirling hope, a sage insistence that change is yet possible.”

To preview POPtical Illusion, Cale has offered “How We See the Light,” and shared its stylized, Pepi Ginsberg-directed video. Over warm, syncopated piano stabs, Cale...

She Played on the Beatles’ Final Song. She Would Never Find Out
Image
In April 2022, a select group of orchestral session musicians received an offer to work on a Paul McCartney recording. It was short notice, with the session booked for May 1 at Capitol Records Studio A. The musicians who could make it said yes promptly. One was Caroline Buckman, a violist with a big, warm personality and eclectic music tastes. In her 20-odd years as a session musician, she’d performed on more than 100 recordings for Christina Aguilera, John Cale, and Harry Styles, among others. Over the years, Joe Jonas had become a good friend.

TIFF Review: Hayao Miyazaki’s The Boy and the Heron is a Wistful Tale of Spectacular Animation
John Cale
I was thinking about my mother

I was thinking about what’s mine

I was living my life like a Hollywood

But I was dying, dying on the vine

–– John Cale

It was a couple years ago that I can remember seeing images from, or maybe just a poster for, Earwig and the Witch, a latter-period Studio Ghibli work directed by none other than Hayao Miyazaki’s own son, Goro (himself an accomplished director). I had a distinctly negative reaction to these images, their gaudy computer-generated aesthetic evoking the hideous look of other modern anime “auteur” Shinji Aramaki. While something of a latecomer to the weeb life who can’t speak with complete and utter authority on trends, movements, styles of the form, I could make a healthy guess that the master Hayao felt some discontent with this direction. Thus we have him rolling up his sleeves and coming out...

Korn’s James “Munky” Shaffer Unveils New Electronic Outfit Venera
Image
Korn guitarist James “Munky” Shaffer has joined forces with composer/filmmaker Chris Hunt to form a new electronic outfit named Venera. The duo has announced its self-titled debut album, along with releasing the single “Hologram” featuring Rizz from the band Vowws.

Venera’s debut LP will arrive on October 13th via Ipecac Recordings. “Hologram” actually follows lead single “Swarm,” which was quietly and mysteriously released last month.

As for the new tune, Shaffer and Hunt state, “’Hologram’ emerged quickly from our first session together. A nearly unchanging drum machine pattern nested in warbling guitars. We don’t interact much with holograms but they seem to offer an image of an alluring emptiness and light, which resonates well with the universe we are driven to explore.”

In addition to Vowws’ Rizz, the album features guest drumming from Deantoni Parks, and vocal contributions from Alain Johannes and Health’s Jacob Duzsik.

Pre-order Venera’s debut LP here,...

White House Down’s 25th Amendment Explained: Would Hammond Actually Replace Sawyer?
Image
In White House Down, U.S. President James Sawyer is presumed dead and officially replaced by Vice President Alvin Hammond, in accordance with the film's interpretation of the 25th Amendment. Set against the backdrop of a terrorist attack on the White House, the action-thriller depicts the prospective political consequences of the imagined event, including the workings of the transfer of presidential power under extraordinary circumstances. As the story unfolds, Sawyer is exposed to an increasing number of threats, and one specific instance eventually leads to his office being assigned to his deputy.

With White House Down's top-tier cast, the story centers around a fictional paramilitary team's attempt to violently overtake the White House, with Capitol Police Officer John Cale (Channing Tatum) attempting to protect President James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) from the assault. In the wake of an explosion caused by a shootout on the White House lawn, speculations about the...

White House Down Cast & Character Guide
Image
White House Down imagined a scenario where the titular American President’s residence is under attack, a concept brought to life with Roland Emmerich’s over-the-top direction and a high-profile cast. The 2013 political action thriller was released around the same time as the similarly-themed Olympus Has Fallen. And yet White House Down held its own ground as one of the best Die Hard rip-offs. Much like the 80s action classic, Channing Tatum’s John Cale serves as an unexpected savior when terrorists take over the White House. But Cale is not alone as the President himself becomes an unlikely ally in his quest to survive.

Emmerich, who has had significant experience in the disaster genre with movies like Independence Day and 2012, succeeded at creating chaos in Washington DC. But it is the dynamic chemistry of its two leads as well as the dramatic prowess of the supporting White House Down...

Why White House Down Bombed At The Box Office Despite Olympus Has Fallen's Massive Success That Same Year
Image
Olympus Has Fallen was a huge box office success, but White House Down, which had a similar premise and was released just three months later, was a major box office bomb. Released in June 2013, White House Down is an action movie directed by Roland Emmerich and follows John Cale (Channing Tatum), a Capitol Police Officer who has to protect the U.S. President, James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx) from a terrorist group. That's eerily similar to another 2013 action movie, Olympus Has Fallen, which follows former Secret Service agent Mike Banning (Gerard Butler), who also has to protect the U.S. President (Aaron Eckhart) from a terrorist group.

The success of Olympus Has Fallen led to an action movie franchise, including two sequels. The Has Fallen film series has made more than half a billion dollars, and now there is a TV show spinoff titled Paris Has Fallen in production. Additionally, the...

Charlotte Gainsbourg, Quito Rayon Richter, Megan Northam, and Noée Abita in The Passengers of the Night (2022)
The Passengers of the Night Review: Charlotte Gainsbourg Navigates the Trials of Life in Emotionally Mature Drama
Charlotte Gainsbourg, Quito Rayon Richter, Megan Northam, and Noée Abita in The Passengers of the Night (2022)
Perhaps it’s presumptuous to say, but I sensed during The Passengers of the Night that I was watching another film in the line of The Fabelmans or (God forbid) Belfast: a nostalgic reverie inspired by lockdown-enforced personal reflection. Though in this case, with Full Moon in Paris taking for Mikhaël Hers the place of whatever child-friendly movie little Stevie Spielberg or Kenny Branagh were gazing up at in wonder, with that film’s star Pascale Ogier and the way her life was tragically cut short curiously haunting the proceedings of this ostensible family drama.

A film that can be accurately described as very French (archival footage of Jacques Rivette from the Claire Denis-directed documentary even appears), and furthermore evoking Renoir, Pialat, and (for a more recent comparison) Mia Hansen-Løve in its elliptical yet always character-driven narrative, Hers’ film is a case of one that never quite shatters...

Weyes Blood Performs “God Turn Me Into a Flower” on Colbert: Watch
Image
Weyes Blood stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Thursday night to deliver an emotional rendition of “God Turn Me Into a Flower.” Watch the performance below.

Natalie Mering took the studio stage in an elegant white gown as she sang the enchanting ballad, backed by a small accompanying band that included synths and orchestral strings. But her voice was certainly the focus, as spotlights and film footage gleamed behind her. Finally, as the track reached its emotional peak, Mering’s “heart” began to glow.

The performance comes as Mering is in the midst of supporting her new album, And In the Darkness, Hearts Aglow. Met with widespread acclaim, the record shows the 34-year-old exploring themes of denial and doom in society, but hones in on an inspiring message of light overcoming darkness. “I think when things get really dark, the best thing to do is focus in on the light,...

Every Song On The Shrek Soundtrack
Image
Shrek not only kicked off a beloved animated franchise, but it also featured a memorable soundtrack packed with amazing songs. Critically acclaimed upon release, the Oscar Award-winning film cleverly re-imagined fairy tales and gave them a distinctly millennial twist. Blending elements of modern popular culture with classic fantasy stories, Shrek has a timeless feel while also being firmly rooted in its own era. The soundtrack was a large part of the film's success, thanks to a selection of tunes ranging from oldies to modern rock hits. Shrek may be a product of its time, but its soundtrack remains popular even decades later.

Initially released as Shrek: Music from the Original Motion Picture, the first soundtrack album featured almost all the hits from the movie and also included a notable cut from the original score. By 2003, the RIAA had certified the album two times platinum, and it was nominated for the Best Compilation Grammy.

Tei Shi Announces Bad Premonition EP, Shares New Single and 2023 Tour Dates
Image
Tei Shi has revealed her upcoming fourth EP, Bad Premonition, along with the project’s latest single “¿QUIÉN Te Manda?” and a string of headlining 2023 tour dates.

The Colombian-Canadian singer-songwriter’s new offering follows her 2020 EP, Die 4 Ur Love, and features production from Tei Shi herself, Chairlift’s Patrick Wimberly, Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s Jacob Portrait, and more. The EP has already been previewed thus far by the Summer 2022 single “Grip” and what has now been confirmed to be the title track in October.

The latest reveal for Bad Premonition comes in the form of the bilingual banger, “¿QUIÉN Te Manda?,” which roughly translates to the expression, “Who told you to?” Over a prickly yet slick production, Tei Shi delights in taking a former flame to task while regaining her power and independence with lines like, “You put ur hands all over the wheel/ Now I’m taking it back...

Yo La Tengo Are Beautifully Bummed on ‘This Stupid World’
Image
For nearly 40 years, Yo La Tengo have been carrying on one of the great conversations in rock & roll history, welcoming us into their little idyll of pastoral noise, mumbled epiphanies, and sublime cover song choices. Even a diehard fan might struggle to pass a multiple-choice exam where you have to match a list of their song titles with the album they were on, but that sense of familiarity and constancy imbues every new release with the feeling of checking in with old friends. What’s more, their attention to detail...
