‘Hitmen’ (2023) Ending, Explained & Film Summary: Does Michael Hero Exact Revenge On Luke & Lauren Loveday?
Image
Savvas D. Michael’s 2023 action-comedy Hitmen is an attempt to force humor into a gangster plot and hope that the audience finds the marital discontent between a bumbling couple hilarious. Unfortunately, it’s the opposite, and the lead characters, Luke (Daniel Caltagirone) and Lauren (Lois Brabin-Platt) Loveday, end up becoming an insufferable duo quite quickly. While Eric Roberts tries his best as the dangerous Michael Hero, a lot of other talent is simply wasted because of poor direction and a lack of clarity about what to do with the script. After adding a bunch of characters and with a massive runtime to fill, the director lets the story run amok, and soon enough, Hitmen becomes a jumbled mess. Here’s what happens in the flea market version of British gangster comedy that we’re used to seeing.

Spoilers Ahead

How Does Trouble Start In The Lovedays’ Lives?

‘Hitmen’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Daniel Caltagirone, Adam Deacon, Lois Brabin-Platt, Max Lohan, Eric Roberts, Marco Leonardi, Georges St-Pierre, Lucas Aurelio, Elijah Rowen, Bentley Kalu | Written and Directed by Savvas D. Michael

Twenty-five years on from Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels the British gangster revival is still going strong. Case in point Hitmen, the new film from writer/director Savvas D. Michael who has already made several contributions to the genre including The Bezonians, Smoking Guns and Original Gangster.

Luke and Lauren are having marital issues. But that doesn’t mean she’s thrilled when Jackie starts hitting on her and when she mocks him, hitting her. This leads to a beating which in turn leads to Jackie’s death.

That would be bad enough, but Jackie’s grandfather Michael is a wealthy CEO with some rather shady connections. When they’re acquitted by reason of self-defense he puts a million-dollar contract on the couple.

Hitmen review – nihilistic mess of a gratuitously violent revenge tale
Jamie Crew and Savvas D. Michael
Couple who kill a man for harassing them in the pub are pursued by an army of his father’s goons. A few sparky performances can’t redeem this cartoonish thriller

One might start to wonder if the career of British writer-director Savvas D Michael (previously responsible for The Bezonians) may be propelled, like the scam in The Producers, by a deliberate intention to make crap movies for an investment write-off. Anything is possible in the wild and wonderful world of the film business. The only other explanation is that Michael thinks the laddish, nihilistically violent and yet not in the slightest bit amusing quasi-cartoon world he’s created in Hitman is entertaining. Could anyone be that deluded?

Hitmen’s inciting incident occurs when a bickering couple, office administrator Luke (Daniel Caltagirone) and estate agent Lauren are harassed in a pub by a drunken visiting American (Max Lohan) who is trying pick up Lauren.

Review: Dough (2015)
Elderly in crisis, youngster who can help, drug being salvation and all sorts of drama bubbling around after use of drug – it’s a struggle to rid a particular TV show from the mind while watching this film, even when the protagonists spend more time in the kitchen than an Rv. That said, director John Goldschmidt’s latest, which also marks his return to the craft since 1987, would fill the small-screen mold with utter perfection. In some ways, staying in that state would have been enough for Dough.

But then comes Jonathan Pryce who makes a semi-compelling reason to shell out for the film at the cinema. The powerhouse actor, sporting a beard and kippah, commands every frame with a heartfelt turn as Nat Dayan, the owner of a family pastry joint not so hot in sales and longevity. While he makes his way to the store at 4 a.m.

‘Eliminators’ DVD Review
Stars: Scott Adkins, Lily Ann Stubbs, Wade Barrett, James Cosmo, Daniel Caltagirone, Stephen Marcus, Nick Nevern, Ty Glaser, Sean Cronin, Mark Wingett, Mem Ferda | Written by Nathan Brookes, Bobby Lee Darby | Directed by James Nunn

If there’s ever a phrase that will have me instantly reaching for my wallet it’s “a Scott Adkins film…” Honestly, nine times out of ten I will buy an Adkins film without so much as seeing a trailer. Why? Well because for me, Adkins is keeping the Dtv dream alive, picking up the action hard-man mantle from 90s pioneers like Jeff Speakman, Olivier Gruner, Gary Daniels and in particular Jeff Wincott, one of the only other true action heroes to have the same perfect blend of fighting skills, charisma and acting chops as Adkins.

Eliminators sees Adkins re-team with his Green Street 3 director James Nunn (who also co-directed the fab British thriller Tower Block...

More Nazi Zombie News: 'Outpost: Black Sun' and 'Frankenstein's Army'
Since everyone loves Nazi Zombies as much as I do, I am thrilled to talk about two upcoming Nazi Zombie movies that look more than promising. Exciting is an understatement, even.

Today, Dark Sky Films released the first two official stills from Dutch director Richard Raaphorst’s Nazi Zombie horror film Frankenstein's Army.

This is someone called “Propellerhead”, described officially as "a hulking Nazi automaton that uses its spinning rotors to slice a bloody swath through the film’s terrified, lost Russian battalion."

And this is Doctor Frankenstein, as played by Karel Roden, dissecting someone unwilling to be dissected.

Like any good Nazi Zombie movie, Frankenstein's Army is set at the tail-end of World War II, when Russian soldiers accidentally find a secret Nazi laboratory as they enter Germany's eastern end. Apparently, the journals of Dr. Viktor Frankenstein are serving as the basis for human experimentation to form a -...

Special make-up prosthetics and splatter genius Paul Hyett makes his directorial debut with a harrowing exploration into tense claustrophobia, hard-hitting action and rollercoaster suspense. But unbeknownst to her captors, she moves between the walls and crawlspaces of the seasoning house planning her escape. The Reeds and Seeing Your Death Looking Back at You: A Movie Review
*here be spoilers.

Director: Nick Cohen.

Writers: Mark Anthony Galluzzo and Chris Baker.

This review is going back a little to After Dark Horrorfest's 2010 lineup which included The Reeds. This is a film that sees several friends boating around the United Kingdom in tragic fashion. This weekender involves exploding propane tanks, vicious burns and gory impalements. Most would classify this title a horror film, but the film goes a little deeper than that into history and into tragedy.

Laura (Anna Brewster), Joe (Daniel Caltagirone), Mel (Emma Catherwood), Nick (O.T. Fagbenle) and Chris (Will Mellor) head out on a boat rented to them by Mr. Croker (George Bell). Quickly, they become lost in head height reeds, until there is a light in the distance. That light is firelight and burning is Mr. Croker's dog. This is some foreshadowing for events to come as several cast members will meet a similar fiery fate.

[Tiff Review] Lipstikka
Dealing with the tenuousness and unreliability of memory, Jonathan Sagall has crafted a sophomore feature that isn’t easy to shake. An Israeli-raised, Canadian-born filmmaker, many at the Toronto International Film Festival were interested to discover why he chose to tell a story about two Palestinian women. Attempting to remain as politically correct and honest as possible, his response was a resounding, “This is a story about people”. To Sagall, his work doesn’t deal with two sides of a never-ending war or two religions at odds with one another. Whereas audience members wanted an underlying salacious manifesto of political turmoil, they received the complicated love story built around the loss of innocence found on its surface. The message would be the same if the characters were Jewish, Muslim, Christian, male, or female. Those attributes are merely details in the grand scope of the unforgettable horror soon revealed, one that...

The First Movie Still from Zombie Thriller Outpost: Black Sun
Outpost: Black Sun is the sequel to the 2008 sleeper hit Outpost, starring Ray Stevenson (Rome). This latest version is also set during the closing of World War II, but Stevenson will not star. Other changes include setting the film in present day and the first photo for the film is seen left.

Currently, the film has completed 3/4 of production and the the still, left, shows one of the members of an undead Nazi horde. The photo shows rotting flesh and a shadowy figure in the foreground. As production completes, expect more darkly themed material from this horror thriller. Available details on Outpost: Black Sun are below.

The synopsis for Outpost: Black Sun is here:

"The year is 1945, the closing stages of WW2, and a German scientist by the name of Klausener is working on a frightening new technology the power to create an immortal Nazi army.

Flash forward to present day,...

'Lipstikka' adds cast
Clara Khoury
London -- Writer/director Jonathan Sagall has signed up Natali Atia, Clara Khoury, Daniel Caltagirone and Tali Knight to star in his project "Lipstikka."

The movie, due to shoot here in the British capital and on location in Haifa, Israel, details the story of two teenage girls -- one Christian, one Muslim -- who decide to celebrate a birthday by an illicit trip to the cinema and sneak over the divide into West Jerusalem where their paths cross two Israeli soldiers. Years later the two girls come together in London and the layers of remembered events are stripped away revealing vastly different stories that have scarred their lives.

Sagall also produces along with Guy Allon with John Reiss and David Willing taking exec producer roles.

The project is backed by Israel Film Fund, John Reiss & Associates and Monumental Productions. The film is scheduled to be ready for release Spring 2010, the filmmakers said.
