Why Megalopolis Is 2024's Most Important Movie

Quick Links Megalopolis is a Passion Project That Took 50 Years To Make Coppola and the Demise of the Hollywood Auteur Non-Franchise Movies are Nearly Impossible To Get Financed A Cultural Renaissance is Perhaps on the Horizon Why Megalopolis is 2024's Most Important Movie

Francis Ford Coppola's highly divisive upcoming science fiction epic Megalopolis is the most important movie set for release in 2024. Produced, written, and directed by Coppola, Megalopolis will have its world premiere on May 16th at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Hollywood cinema appears to be at a crossroads. Blockbuster franchises, sequels, prequels, and reboots have dominated the box office for the entire twenty-first century, but especially throughout the past 15 years.

Jimmy Hunt Interview: Invaders From Mars 4K Restoration
Image
Nearly 70 years after it first came to theaters, Invaders From Mars is finally getting a glorious 4K Ultra-hd restoration. The sci-fi cult classic revolved around a young boy named David who begins to suspect his town is under attack from beings from outer space after witnessing a flying saucer and his family begins exhibiting odd personalities.

Jimmy Hunt led the cast of Invaders From Mars as David alongside Arthur Franz, Helena Carter, Leif Erickson, Hillary Brooke, Morris Ankrum, Walter Sande, Max Wagner, and Milburn Stone. Even as the genre has changed over the years, William Cameron Menzies' sci-fi film remains one of the more influential of the genre, having inspired everything from Don Coscarelli's Phantasm to Brad Bird's The Iron Giant, and still holds up as a chilling effort seven decades later.

Aliens Arrive in Exclusive Trailer for New 4K Restoration of Invaders from Mars
William Cameron
A sci-fi classic that premiered nearly 70 years ago has undergone a much-deserved 4K restoration. William Cameron Menzies’ 1953 Invaders from Mars, which follows a young boy who witnesses an alien invasion, will play at the Fine Arts Film Festival and Il Cinema Ritrovato this summer before arriving on 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD on September 26. Ahead of this rollout, we’re pleased to exclusively premiere the new trailer.

Filmed from a child’s point of view, using exaggerated sets and upward angles, it reflected Cold War tensions, the Red Scare, and paranoid anxiety typical of many films in the ’50s, including Robert Wise’s The Day the Earth Stood Still. Longtime enthusiast and preservationist of classic cinema Scott MacQueen led the restoration effort, which had a unique challenge: the color negative confirmed for printing in SUPERcineCOLOR lacked many shots and needed to be sourced from 70-year-old prints.
