Earth Abides TV Review: Alexander Ludwig leads the adaptation of the classic post-apocalyptic novel
Image
Plot: When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction. The series is based on George R. Stewart’s classic sci-fi novel of the same name.

Review: Most post-apocalyptic stories tend to skew towards horrific and dystopian narratives. From The Walking Dead to Mad Max, the future usually looks pretty grim after the fall of civilization. Zombies, plagues, aliens, or even nuclear war have served to pave the way for cautionary tales brimming with violence through a microcosm of society seen through the survivors. Post-covid, these stories have continued to thrive even as we have experienced a real pandemic. Still, it has also afforded refreshed opportunities to tell hopeful and aspirational tales of the world to come.

‘How to Rob a Bank’ Co-Director Stephen Robert Morse on Constraints of True Crime, What He Learned From Hollywood Bandit Scott Scurlock
Image
Despite its title, “How to Rob a Bank” is not an instructional video on how to commit crime. Instead, as its co-director Stephen Robert Morse tells Variety, it’s a documentary about “the consequences of crime.”

The doc, which dropped on Netflix last week, focuses on a prolific ‘90s Seattle bank robber called Scott Scurlock, whom the FBI soon nicknamed Hollywood due to his penchant for elaborate disguises.

Morse (a producer on “Amanda Knox”) and his co-director Seth Porges (“Class Action Park”) began working on the film back in 2020 and quickly tracked down many of those involved in the notorious case.

As the documentary works its way into the streamer’s global top 10, Morse sat down with Variety to discuss the genesis of the project and what he learned from getting up close and personal with a notorious bank robber.

How did you get involved with this project?

My collaborator,...

Trimax Developing ‘Father Kapaun’s Valley’, Tale Of Korean War Hero Based On New John Stansifer Book; Stephen Campanelli On Board To Direct
Image
Exclusive: Trimax Media, the production company led by Alan Glazer (The Bank Job), has acquired film rights to No Bullet Got Me Yet, John Stansifer’s forthcoming book about U.S. Army Chaplain, Father Emil Kapaun.

Stansifer has scripted the film adaptation, titled Father Kapaun’s Valley, which Stephen Campanelli (Drinkwater) is attached to direct. The intention with the project is to help fill the void when it comes to U.S.-produced films about the Korean War, while spotlighting a little-known war hero currently on the path to sainthood. Set to produce are Glazer and Stansifer, whose book is slated for publication on March 12, 2024.

The most decorated chaplain in U.S. military history, Kapaun regularly risked his life during the Korean War to help soldiers survive, also taking great pains to support them in their faith, no matter their religion. Among the most notable incidents from his military history was...

Netflix Backs Indigenous Filmmakers as Streamer Hits Milestone in Canadian Content Support (Exclusive)

Click here to read the full article.

Netflix has given Anishinaabe filmmaker Jaime Wescoup 25,000 in film development financing to mark the U.S. video streamer passing the milestone of 1000 creators completing Netflix-supported film training programs in Canada.

“There’s no one telling these stories. And these stories need to be told,” Wescoup tells The Hollywood Reporter about his documentary in the works about two female First Nations reserve chiefs — chief Kyra Wilson of Long Plain First Nation and chief Angela Levasseur of the Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation.

Wescoup adds both women are role models and trailblazers in moving the yardstick of inclusion of young girls and women in First Nation communities in Canada. “This is something really special because it’s a story of strength and resilience. And both of these chiefs, as women, embody those traits,” he insists.

“Jaime has an important story to tell through the film he is...

Funny First Trailer for Canadian Coming-of-Age Comedy 'Drinkwater'
Image
"Rejection is just a part of life. It's okay." Levelfilm in Canada has debuted an official trailer for an indie coming-of-age comedy titled Drinkwater, which premiered at a few Canadian festivals last year. It won the 2021 Telus Audience Choice Award for Canadian Narrative at the Calgary Film Festival. Drinkwater is described as a coming-of-age story in the John Hughes tradition. Mike Drinkwater is lost. His father, Hank, is hardly the role model Mike deserves. A young woman moves to town, and their friendship gives them the courage to overcome their challenges. Director Stephen S. Campanelli has made a "fun, quirky, small-town coming-of-age story. Set in 2020, the film still captures the nostalgia of the ’80s, filled with a great cast and Canadiana written all over it." Starring Daniel Doheny and Eric McCormack as the two Drinkwaters, with Louriza Tronco, Alex Zahara, Jordan Burtchett, and Naika Toussaint. This looks way better than it sounds!

Oldenburg: Father-Son Filmmakers Peter and John Hyams on the Family Business of Genre Filmmaking and a Shared Desire to “Blow S*** Up”
Image
Click here to read the full article.

“I have a mantra,” says director Peter Hyams. “It was something me and my camera operator, Steve Campanelli had: each morning before we went to shoot we’d put our arms around each other, like football players, and say four things: 1. Go bigger or go home. 2. If it can’t be fixed with a hammer, it can’t be fixed. 3. If it doesn’t fit, force it. 4. Let’s blow shit up.”

As mantras go, it’s hard to argue with the results. With a career that’s included prescient conspiracy thriller Capricorn One (1977), with Elliott Gould and James Brolin; sci-fi Western Outland (1981) with Sean Connery, the Gene Hackman/Anne Archer actioner Narrow Margin (1990) and Jean-Claude Van Damme’s time-traveling fight film Timecop (1994), Hyams, has secured his place in cult cinema history.

It’s also an approach to movie making that informed the career of Hyams’ son,...

Tennessee Williams
Film Review: ‘Grand Isle’
Tennessee Williams
A sub-Tennessee Williams potboiler triangle between restless sexpot, impotent husband, and hunky handyman ever-so-slowly congeals into a lumpy gumbo of thriller elements in “Grand Isle.” This third directorial big-screen feature for veteran Steadicam operator Stephen S. Campanelli has plenty of potential guilty-pleasure signifiers — not least being top-billed Nicolas Cage’s sixth vehicle this year — but the overripe (if underdeveloped) payoff arrives only after a full hour of patience-testing buildup. Opening on 15 screens Dec. 6, it looks to make a much larger commercial impact as a night’s disposable home entertainment in simultaneous on-demand release.

An opening sequence that turns out to be something of a red herring finds Cage’s tippling ex-Marine Walter Franklin roused from slumber in 1988 by a break-in at his rural southern Louisiana manse. The would-be thief manages to get back outside, but is shot by the master of the house as he’s clambering over the picket fence.

Nicolas Cage and Kelsey Grammer Team Up For a New Thriller Called Grand Isle
Nicolas Cage and Kelsey Grammer starring in the same movie!? I never thought I’d see that happen, but here we are!

The film is a thriller called Grand Isle and it’s being directed by Clint Eastwood’s long-standing camera operator Stephen S. Campanelli, who has worked on Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River and most recently Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born.

In the film, Cage plays “a trigger-happy ex-Marine living on a quiet island in Louisiana with his seductive wife (KaDee Strickland). Forced to hire a cash-strapped handyman (Luke Benward) to fix a fence destroyed while he was gunning down a home intruder, he finds his life taking a strange turn, and after a night filled with ‘greed, sex, violence and unspeakable discoveries’ a detective (Grammer) is brought in to lead a police investigation.”

Indian Horse (2017)
Like the Richard Wagamese novel on which it is based, the drama Indian Horse combines one of Canada’s greatest national glories — the game of ice hockey — with one of the darkest chapters in its national history: the terrible goings-on at Canadian-Indian residential schools where aboriginal children were taught to be good Christians, far removed from their own culture and heritage. This is the second feature as a director from Montreal-born camera operator Stephen Campanelli, the go-to Steadicam guy on the movies of Clint Eastwood, who gets an executive producer credit here. Film Review: 'Momentum'
★★☆☆☆ There's only so much gravitas a Morgan Freeman voiceover can bring to a project. As Stephen Campanelli's Momentum (2015) opens, he proclaims: "We are to engineer an event to shape the destiny of our country." Platitudes and a handful of telephone calls aside, the power-hungry senator has little impact from the wood-panelled corridors of power thereafter. Instead it's his envoy and hatchet man, the dully named Mr. Washington (James Purefoy), who is sent to Cape Town to recover a disc which contains evidence of the plot.

Momentum Review
When a film is working on a somewhat modest budget – particularly when entering in to the realm of the ambitious, action thriller genre – the one essential, and the one thing money can’t buy, is a good story. So while there are certainly flaws to Stephen S. Campanelli’s directorial debut from a visual

Wronged Women Make Things Right in Momentum and Julia
There really aren’t enough female-headlined action films, so when one comes along it’s almost worth a look on its existence alone. Ideally it will lean more Haywire than Mercenaries quality-wise, but the paucity of options means we’ll take what we can get at this point. Happily, the newest lady-led action picture, Momentum, is an entertaining and frequently thrilling ride that very nearly lives up to its title. A high-tech team of slick-looking bank robbers are midway through their heist when mistakes and bad attitudes get the better of them. One of their number is killed, and another is unmasked in front of the hostages. With her face all over the news, Alex (Olga Kurylenko, Quantum of Solace) is forced to lay low and wait for the deal with those who hired her team to wrap up, but a double cross leaves her on the run and low on options. A...

Momentum Review
You can say this much for Momentum – it more than sustains its own. From an energetic opening heist sequence, complete with slick full-body suits and voice modifying masks left over from a Daft Punk concert, to an extended cat-and-mouse shootout in an abandoned factory, the movie doesn’t skimp on hard-hitting, high-octane action, and its streamlined (and very silly) plot moves from over-the-top setpiece to setpiece with refreshing self-awareness.

Olga Kurylenko, a long way from Quantum of Solace, stars as Alex, one of the ultra-professional thieves in that aforementioned heist, which director Stephen Campanelli handles with style and unexpected creativity. She’s a very believable badass, delivering high kicks and bullet sprays with a cold, methodical detachment that fits the character nicely.

Unfortunately, though Alex and her co-criminals were simply going after diamonds, they also end up in possession of an all-important flash drive, which contains top-secret information that could...

Watch: 'Momentum' Trailer Featuring Olga Kurylenko & James Purefoy
"She just declared war." Starz Digital debuted an official trailer for Stephen S. Campanelli's Momentum, an action thriller starring Olga Kurylenko as a "mysterious thief" who gets pulled into a bigger plot after one last heist, beginning an elaborate chase after a master assassin. The cast includes James Purefoy and Morgan Freeman. There is lots of mystery and intrigue in this, almost as if it was another one of those French action movies from Luc Besson and EuropaCorp. The action does look solid, and Olga Kurylenko can (and usually does) kick ass, so maybe it's fun to watch late with some beer and pizza. Give it a look. Enjoy. Here's the first trailer for Stephen S. Campanelli's Momentum, direct from StarzDigital's YouTube: When Alex (Olga Kurylenko), an infiltration expert with a secret past, accidentally reveals her identity during what should have been a routine heist, she quickly finds...

The Society of Camera Operators 2010 Nominations Include Salt, Hereafter, and 24
Around awards season, I'm always interested by the nominations of guilds or other groups with a specific technical focus. Of course, the Society of Camera Operators found a way to honor The Social Network like everyone else. But Hereafter and Salt, which won't contend for many awards as complete works, also earned nominations alongside The Town and The Fighter for feature film camera operator of the year. The nominees in television are similarly eclectic. The final season of 24 missed out on a swan song at the Emmys and the Golden Globes, but is recognized here with House, Bones, Sons of Anarchy, and Raising Hope. Hit the jump for the full list. Via THR: Camera Operator of the Year - Feature Film Steve Campanelli for Hereafter Scott Sakamoto for Salt Geoffrey Haley for The Fighter Peter Rosenfeld for The Social Network Colin Anderson for The Town Camera Operator of the Year...
