Canned Heat Bassist Larry Taylor Dead at 77
Larry Taylor in The Saint (1962)
Larry Taylor, longtime bassist of boogie rock act and original Woodstock performers Canned Heat, has died at the age of 77. The band’s manager and one-time producer, Skip Taylor, confirmed on Canned Heat’s Facebook that Taylor died Monday, August 19th at his home in Lake Balboa, California after a 12-year battle with cancer.

Taylor, known by his nickname “The Mole,” joined Canned Heat in 1967, two years after the band’s formation, and helped form what most fans and critics consider their “classic lineup” through 1970. That group played at the...

The Triumph and Tragedy of Woodstock’s Forgotten Album Producer
Fifty years after the original Woodstock festival took place, mementos of the event are scattered across the country. Jimi Hendrix’s guitar is on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; Wavy Gravy’s sleeping bag is housed at the Fur Peace Ranch in Ohio (owned by former Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen). Jack Casady’s bass, Johnny Winter’s chain necklace and the original plans for the location can be found at a museum on the site of the festival in Bethel, New York.

Then there’s the white cardboard box,...

1970 Woodstock Documentary Will Head to Theaters for One Night Only
David Crosby
The upcoming 50th anniversary of Woodstock has been somewhat complicated. There’s a high percentage that Michael Lang’s festival might not happen (if you’re David Crosby, you’re almost certain of it). Thankfully, the original festival’s 1970 documentary will hit theaters nationwide for one night only, where it’s possible to celebrate the anniversary in the comfort of a soda-soaked theater chair. Woodstock: The Director’s Cut will screen on August 15th at 7:00 pm local time.

Directed by Michael Wadleigh, this is the first nationwide screening since the film was originally released.

Iconic New Orleans Musician Dr. John Dies
Tony Sokol Jun 6, 2019

New Orleans musician Mac Rebennack conjured the best mojo in Dr. John the Night Tripper.

"They call me Dr. John, The Night Tripper," New Orleans voodoo pianist Mac Rebennack sang on the 1969 song "Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya." With his sizzling Gris-Gris his hand, he lived and breathed New Orleans. The last of the best, Dr. John the Night Tripper, died of a heart attack "toward the break of day" on Thursday, June 6, according to the New York Times. Like Leon Redbone, who died last week, there is some dispute over Dr. John's age, various reports have him listed as 77 or 78.

"The family thanks all whom have shared his unique musical journey, and requests privacy at this time," a statement from the musician's family said. They did not say where he died, though he reportedly was resting at his Lake Pontchartrain area home, not too far from New Orleans.

Five-year Plan: January albums
1963

Johnny Cash: Blood, Sweat and Tears (Columbia)

Some of Cash's '60s concept albums were burdened with much too talking between tracks; here the tribute to the American working man gets to mostly stand alone on its musical merits, and shines. Notably, it incluces the top version of the traditional "John Henry"” about the most legendarily heroic working man ever, and the version of "Casey Jones" here is classic as well. Politically and psychologically, Cash was the perfect man for this job.

1968

Byrds: Notorious Byrd Brothers (Columbia)

Sometimes transitional albums, confusing listeners expecting a group's earlier style, are underrated. Not so with this classic. It's true that it didn't sell as well as earlier Byrds LPs, nor did the single from the album chart very high, but for decades Notorious Byrd Brothers has been widely revered, and not just by fans; some critics have even anointed it as the band's best album.

Today In Music History: Woodstock Wraps Up
By Zachary Swickey

Forty-two years ago today, the iconic Woodstock Music Festival was wrapping up after three days of peace and music. The fest is easily one the most legendary events to take place in all of music history. It’s clear that the big music festivals of today – Coachella, Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza – attempt to recapture the same spirit, but even at their best, modern festivals pale in comparison to the lighting-in-a-bottle moment that was Woodstock.

Woodstock began when hippie concert promoter Michael Lang was approached by a group of investors looking to put on a three day music festival – inspired by success of the Monterey International Pop Festival of 1967. Lang found dairy farmer Max Yasgur, who was willing to lease 600 acres of his land for the event at the price of $75,000, and set out to plan a big weekend for an expected 50,000 people. Tickets were priced at $18 in advance (around $105 in today’s money,...

The Kings Of Leon's 'Talihina' Trailer Has Us Thinking ...
By Zachary Swickey

On Tuesday, the Kings of Leon unveiled the trailer for "Talihina Sky," their first (and, some might say, inevitable) foray into the wild world of rock docs. Still a work-in-progress, "Talihina" will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month, and gives fans a glimpse into Kings' rise from God-fearing preacher's sons (and nephews) to platinum-plus arena rock icons ... a voyage that, of course, includes plenty of whiskey swiggin’, weed tokin’, vomiting, nudity and an awkward intra-band confrontation or 16. Obviously, we're excited.

And so, in honor of the (really pretty excellent) "Talihina" trailer — and the Foo Fighters' just-released "Back and Forth" doc, too — we decided to take a look back at some of the all-time best rock documentaries. Will the Kings join this list? We'll just have to wait and see.

"Dig!" - There is a reason for the exclamation point at the end of this doc’s title,...

[DVD Review] Woodstock: Director's Cut - Ultimate Collector's Edition
Michael Wadleigh’s Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace and Music, a comprehensive, Oscar-winning documentary of the biggest musical event the world has ever seen, makes its way onto Blu-ray glory with the Director’s Cut (1994) in a truly impressive presentation Warner Brothers has chosen to call The Ultimate Collector’s Edition. Lasting just 15 minutes shy of 4 hours, Woodstock features performances by musicians who left a lasting impression on the world scattered in between clips of the festival, its audience and its organizers.

The significance of Woodstock is hard to overplay; in an age of public turmoil, when rifts existed between countless subsets of American culture, Woodstock set everything aside for three days political expression through music. Some artists delivered mini-sermons before playing their set while others let their instruments do all the talking. There are those who insist Jimi Hendrix’s rendition of the “Star-Spangled Banner” used guitar distortion to...

Collector's Choice: Woodstock, In Love We Trust, Eternal Sunshine on Blu-Ray
  •   Slim pickings this Tuesday (June 9th 2009) as there are only a trio of titles worth recommending. Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music Director's Cut is a fully equipped edition (see details below) of the Michael Wadleigh documentary film, a great father's day present that curiously comes out before Ang Lee's Taking Woodstock and not sometime in August when Woodstock took place. Film Movement offers Wang Xiaoshuai's 10th film as a director with In Love We Trust - a contemporary drama set in Beijing, involving two mid-aged couples. Adapted from a true story, the story of Zuo You is about the relationship crisis and emotional unrest of two couples, when the son of the divorced couple is found to have leukemia. In need of a bone marrow transplant, the only way to save the teenage boy is for the divorced couple to give birth to another baby, which will jeopardize current relationships.
